If I know a requester really well I might combine some of those steps to save time, but generally having separate steps means that there's less risk for everypony involved and that clients are more confident about what they're getting. <3\n\nDiscord's Dinner Date was two pieces commissioned at the same time, but we did the consultation for both of them together. This pawcess can happen over messages, but I've also found it helpful to jump onto stream while a client is available and draw live while chatting with them. This can speed up the communication a lot :3\n\nI did a couple of idea thumbnails until we settled on ideas for each image. The second thing to decide was whether we'd do a mixed pile or separate piles for the disposal shot. Ultimately we went with separate piles so there'd be more opportunity to give each pile its own personality :3\n\nBecause my commission price for final pieces is hourly rather than a pre-calculated total, the ideas here can be changed during the rest of the piece (and you'll see that some additional ideas and poses do work their way in). But I think thumbnails are something that can benefit a lot of different commissions, they help make sure that expectations are aligned and that everypony has a rough idea of what a piece will be.\n\nAfter thumbnails are done I move over to rough drafts :3\n\n❤❤❤\n\n\nDraft phase is a chance to iron out details and decide on final poses, and to expand on details that might have gotten left out of the thumbnails. Once again, a big aspect that I emphasize with my polished pieces is that details do not need to be set in stone: because I charge hourly there isn't a point where my clients can no longer ask about changes, as they're aware that that doing so might increase the time and cost of the piece.\n\nI think of these stages as zeroing in on a final picture. We start out with rough concepts, and then in thumbnails revise them down into visual ideas. A lot more nuance and detail gets added during the rough draft. As just one example, you can see the addition of Pinkie Pie peeking out of Discord's ass in the first picture :3c\n\nOne of the things that was a lot of fun with these two pics is the sheer amount of stuff happening at the same time. Dimalad and I talked through each pony's reactions and tried to add little details for each one. This is another reason why I felt like it was ultimately a good decision to have the poop as separate piles per-pony: each pony could have their own individual experience and texture that reflected them <3\n\n❤❤❤\n\nDuring commissions I try to check in weekly to update clients with the current pawgress on the piece and to give them hour estimates, that way the overall cost of the piece and direction isn't a surprise. This also gives the client more opportunity to notice things they'd like to change, to revise down scope if they're worried about cost, or to ask for additions if they have other ideas.\n\nThe outline-only view near the end of the animation is the line art: for this piece I used Blender Grease Pencil to make vector line art, then imported it into Krita to do finishing touches and refinements. I go back and forth on Grease Pencil as a line tool, sometimes it's faster and sometimes it's not. But it can allow for some complicated line art that would be much more difficult to do otherwise even with the cost of needing to use two programs. I'm very much looking forward to when Grease Pencil 3 coming out later this year, which should fix a number of my annoyances with the software X3\n\nIt was near the end of page #1 in this commission that we got the idea for animating some of the thought bubbles, so once I had about finished the piece I did some research into gif compression and found gifsk ([url=https://gif.ski/]https://gif.ski/[/url]), which is a fantastic open source program that helps compress and overlay gif frames in order to cheat more colors into each individual frame and avoid the banding pawblem that's common with most gifs. It's a really helpful program, I used it to make this timelapse as well, and I might experiment more with it in the future to see how far I can push its limits :3\n\nThe final deliverable for this commission ended up being the two images, the animated text-bubbles, two short stories, and a separate text-bubble version for RedNastyFox's excellent accompanying story ([url=https://aryion.com/g4/view/1040511]https://aryion.com/g4/view/1040511[/url]) <3 I work at pretty high resolutions, so the deliverables include both the full-res exports and the scaled down exports, which are the same ones I usually end up posting here :3 I self-host everything and just send over an obfuscated link that can be downloaded or shared with anypony else that the client wants to send it to.\n\n❤❤❤\n\n[b]Want a commission?[/b] I'm accepting both sketch commissions and polished commissions right now. But I think thumbnails are something that can benefit a lot of different commissions, they help make sure that expectations are aligned and that everypony has a rough idea of what a piece will be.

Draft phase is a chance to iron out details and decide on final poses, and to expand on details that might have gotten left out of the thumbnails. Once again, a big aspect that I emphasize with my polished pieces is that details do not need to be set in stone: because I charge hourly there isn't a point where my clients can no longer ask about changes, as they're aware that that doing so might increase the time and cost of the piece.
I think of these stages as zeroing in on a final picture. We start out with rough concepts, and then in thumbnails revise them down into visual ideas. A lot more nuance and detail gets added during the rough draft. As just one example, you can see the addition of Pinkie Pie peeking out of Discord's ass in the first picture :3c
One of the things that was a lot of fun with these two pics is the sheer amount of stuff happening at the same time. Dimalad and I talked through each pony's reactions and tried to add little details for each one. This is another reason why I felt like it was ultimately a good decision to have the poop as separate piles per-pony: each pony could have their own individual experience and texture that reflected them <3

During commissions I try to check in weekly to update clients with the current pawgress on the piece and to give them hour estimates, that way the overall cost of the piece and direction isn't a surprise. This also gives the client more opportunity to notice things they'd like to change, to revise down scope if they're worried about cost, or to ask for additions if they have other ideas.
The outline-only view near the end of the animation is the line art: for this piece I used Blender Grease Pencil to make vector line art, then imported it into Krita to do finishing touches and refinements. I go back and forth on Grease Pencil as a line tool, sometimes it's faster and sometimes it's not. But it can allow for some complicated line art that would be much more difficult to do otherwise even with the cost of needing to use two programs. I'm very much looking forward to when Grease Pencil 3 coming out later this year, which should fix a number of my annoyances with the software X3
It was near the end of page #1 in this commission that we got the idea for animating some of the thought bubbles, so once I had about finished the piece I did some research into gif compression and found gifsk (https://gif.ski/), which is a fantastic open source program that helps compress and overlay gif frames in order to cheat more colors into each individual frame and avoid the banding pawblem that's common with most gifs. It's a really helpful program, I used it to make this timelapse as well, and I might experiment more with it in the future to see how far I can push its limits :3
The final deliverable for this commission ended up being the two images, the animated text-bubbles, two short stories, and a separate text-bubble version for RedNastyFox's excellent accompanying story (https://aryion.com/g4/view/1040511) <3 I work at pretty high resolutions, so the deliverables include both the full-res exports and the scaled down exports, which are the same ones I usually end up posting here :3 I self-host everything and just send over an obfuscated link that can be downloaded or shared with anypony else that the client wants to send it to.
