Where Drakes and Dragons both had naturally long life spans (1000 to 1200 years) Dragon Nobles were rendered effectively immortal due to their strong connection to their magical abilities. as long as a source of energy is within reach of their effective area, they could sustain their life force indefinitely. This does present a population problem. as a high population of dragon nobles would cause a drought of energy, making them unable to sustain their life energy beyond their normal years.
Finally, Dragon Royalty, like Saryala, are as adept in magic as the Nobles, But their own magical energy takes on properties enabling them abilities beyond what normal dragon nobles can achieve. as Royal dragons posses magic akin to a demi-god. But still require ambient energy to utilize their magic. but when there is such energy available, their royal blood enhances the magical energy with their royal status.
But long ago in the past, an extinction event happened, killing off a vast majority of dragon kind. the more common Drakes were spared near extinction, But the dragons became few in numbers. only one kingdom survived the extinction event, and was able to thrive after the dust settled and sunlight bathed the lands again, giving the magical dragons energy to sustain themselves and revive their kingdom. laying in a secret valley, Saryala is the current ruler along side Colin after he had discovered the kingdom after several millennia of remaining in secret.

Raymond himself is a close friend of Colin, having trained together in the USMC, having been close friends, Colin, recognizing Raymond's potential, was open to teaching Raymond how to use magic.
