Doreen Hammerthighs was bored. Very, very bored. It was easy to become bored in the priory. It's not like she'd taken any vow or even chose to be there. That decision was made for her long ago. It was a dull life of services, menial chores, all of that.
She had things she enjoyed, though. Among the books, in a neglected corner of the library, were some books about crime in the seedy underbelly of various big cities. The description of criminal minds and incredible exploits, as well as the big, alive, diverse cities where they happened. fired up her imagination. She wanted to see the cities where all these things were happening -- where indeed things *were* happening. She devoured these books, and many more, when she wasn't reaching things others couldn't or having to practically prostrate herself for the priest to reach her mouth for sacraments.
One day, a soldier returning from the front, a stag that barely came up to her chest, visited the priory, looking for a night's rest before moving along. A salty guy, not afraid of openly flirting with women who'd taken an oath forbidding them from answering. Though not what would conventionally be called handsome, he certainly had animal magnetism about him. He let little of himself out, only giving Aland as his name, and after a meal, was allowed to sleep in the loft of the barn, where there was plenty of fresh straw.
That night, as he settled down, Doreen found her way into the barn as well. She'd seen enough of livestock breeding and accidentally seeing other guests of the priory to know what to do here. And so, to much suprise, Aland found someone willing to reciprocate.
After a full, almost sleepless night, Aland and Doreen left together. She had her wish, and a fun, willing guide to show her just what the world had to offer.
