He sighed as he walked into the building. “I finally made it to Mars.” The young man said as he walked towards the nearest desk in the customs office. “Name, and passport please.” the attendant asked as she looked at him. “Josh Thendas.” he said pulling his passport out of the messenger bag he had on him. “Hmm, born December 1st, 2345, Age 25, Occupation biologist, Species Human.” Josh nodded. “Yes.” He said as he took back his passport. “Take boat 5-c to residential section.” the attendant said pointing at a door. Josh nodded. “Alright.” he said as he walked out the door, and was hit by the scent of sea water and exhaust from multiple boat engines. “It’s even wetter than I heard…” Josh said as he saw the designated boat and got on it. In the year 2188, Terra-formation technology had been created allowing for the colonization of planets, and the red planet was the first on Earth’s agenda. Mars had been terraformed pretty quickly thanks to the technology created by man-kind. Most of the planet was water, and had a few large land masses, but the main area of human colonization was on the largest continent of the planet which was a heavily forested landmass which had a bunch of small islands which had a tropical climate, meaning most travel on mars was done by plane or boat. “Wake up.” the man said shaking Josh’s body. “It’s your shift.” Josh grumbled as he awoke from his dream of when he came to the planet two months ago. “Ninth week here and it went to hell…” he said shivering in the poncho he wore as he held up his rifle. “This boat sucks.” Josh thought looking around as they passed another mangrove tree. Within weeks after Josh Thendas’s arrival on Mars, the formerly red planet went to hell. An unknown strain of bacteria appeared on one of the smaller colonized islands, and people panicked over it possibly being a terrorist act from a pro-earth faction thinking that earth should own the fourth planet, but in truth the bacteria was far worse than believed. “I have the worst luck.” Josh said as he sat on a crate as he put the rifle he was carrying on his lap. “I came here to study the native animals.” he said sighing as he heard a high pitched scream. “You hear that?” He asked looking at the other two people on the boat. “It’s a shriek. They, luckily, are harmless.” a tall man said looking at Josh. The man was a Vulpin, a race of fox like humanoids whose bodies were covered in orange fur that turned white during winter time. “Shhh.” said the other person on the boat, a human like Josh. “Something is following the shriek…” he said looking towards starboard. Soon a giant bat-like creature flew out of a forested island, and was followed by a large swarm of black insects. “Shit, Swarmers, shoot them before they eat the shriek!” Josh and the Vulpin nodded and began to shoot at the swarm. Swarmers are a mindless species of insects whose only dedication in life is to eat and infect. The unknown bacteria strain was the source of the swarmers and other horrid beasts that plagued the planet. As it was shot at the swarm stopped and changed its course towards the boat. “What the? This isn’t normal, seer the boat away!” the other human said looking at Josh. He nodded and went for the boat’s controls, and put the boat in top speed towards the nearest island. After a couple minutes land was visible. “We’re almost there.” Josh said not looking back. “That might not help!” the Vulin said as the swarmers attacked the boat. Swamers attack to infect by ramming the entire swarm into their target and then exploding like a bunch of grenades and releasing spores which spread the bacteria. As the insects hit, the resulting explosions propelled and crashed the boat on the beach. Josh groaned as he rubbed his forehead and felt something warm and slightly sticky. “Fuck!” he said as he realized his head was bleeding, and that his right leg and arm were badly gashed. Josh then began crawl away from the wrecked boat. Soon after he got out Josh saw the corpses of his patrol unit. “You’re gonna die.” said a strange voice in the back of Josh’s mind. “I know, and what of it to you?” Josh responded thinking he was hallucinating from blood loss. “I can help you, but You might not like it.” said the strange voice. “Sure, what ever.” Josh said as his vision began to fade. Right after he said that a strange wolf like animal walked over to him. “Rest, you’re gonna need it.” It said licking his wounds. “Alright…” Josh said as he passed out as most of the wounds that were licked healed in an instant.
