Reggie soon showed up, juggling a couple of bags—homemade sushi and a little cake that, in her words, “could save Christmas if all else failed.” Her cheeks were flushed from the cold, and a mischievous smile played on her lips when she saw Evelyn waiting, decked out in a Santa hat and a ridiculous reindeer sweater.
“Well, what’s all this?” Reggie asked as she shrugged off her coat. “Did Santa hire some new elves this year?”
Evelyn laughed, though she couldn’t deny that Reggie’s smile had a way of completely disarming her. It was equal parts maddening and enchanting.
The evening unfolded with laughter, delicious food, and the rhythmic clink of sake glasses. Before long, any trace of formality between them had melted away. By the third toast, Reggie was spinning embarrassing tales from her highschool days, leaving Evelyn struggling not to spit out her drink from laughing too hard.
“Do you remember that time I dared you to sing karaoke in Japanese?” Reggie asked, her eyes narrowing playfully.
“That was a cultural challenge!” Evelyn protested, though her grin gave her away. “And you joined in, so don’t play innocent now.”
They both burst into laughter, the sake loosening their inhibitions. Reggie, in a seemingly casual move, let her hand brush against Evelyn’s as she reached for her glass. It was a small gesture, but it was enough to leave Evelyn momentarily speechless.
“You okay?” Reggie asked softly.
“Yeah… yeah, it’s just…” Evelyn toyed with a strand of her hair. “I’m really glad you’re here.”
Reggie tilted her head slightly, her confident smirk softening into something more tender. “Me too,” she said, leaning a little closer. “I don’t know if it’s the sake or the holiday vibes, but tonight I feel… bold.”
Evelyn raised an eyebrow, her heart racing. “Bold how?”
Reggie leaned in further, their faces now only inches apart. “Bold enough to tell you I’ve been dying to kiss you for months.”
The room went still, except for the soft glow of the holiday lights. Gathering the courage only sake (and maybe fate) could give her, Evelyn closed the gap between them, pressing her lips to Reggie’s.
The kiss was warm, tentative at first, but quickly grew surer, charged with all the emotions they’d been holding back. When they finally pulled away, both of them were flushed—and this time, neither could blame the alcohol.
Evelyn knew Reggie is still underage to deal with something strong like Sake nevertheless, the point of no return came and they drink more and more, two lesbians and lots of sake...
“Merry Christmas, Reggie,” Evelyn murmured, her voice playful but her smile genuine.
“Merry Christmas, Evelyn,” Reggie replied, pulling her into a hug with a laugh. “Though I think Santa’s job is done here this year.”
They spent the rest of the night in each other’s company, wrapped in laughter, tender touches, and the certainty that this would only be the first of many Christmases they’d share together.
