"description": "I've had a number of inquiries about how I do my curls, so this is a simplified tutorial of how I work with curls.\n\nStep 1) sketch out your character on the first layer.\nStep 2) On a NEW layer, I randomly swizzle my hand around to make the effect of messy curls. Let your hand do the Harlem Shake. Something. Trust me, this makes the hair look awful, like wtf did I just do and this isn't going to come out right. Trust me--yes it will. The messier it looks, the better it'll come out. I usually work with a brush about the opacity of 30%, that way if I draw many squizzles, you can see them overlapping. This actually makes the next step easier.\nStep 3) on a new layer, with a brush at the opacity of 100%, I start to outline the messy curls I made in step two. If you look closely, I tried to follow and trace my lines I made from step 2. Sometimes, however, I get a better idea and go with my better idea instead. I work with thick and thin brushes, to get the effect I want. I use the thick brush for the outline of the curls. The smaller brush size is used for the detailed lines and inner swirls of the curls. Don't freak out about making every strand of hair look correct. If you look closely at many of my pieces, my swirls lead to nowhere... but that's okay. The point of hair is to NOT make sense, because the more crazy it is, the cooler it is.\n\nSometimes I have gaps between one curl and another, so I literally just add random curly lines. The point here is not to have too many straight lines (you may have some, but not many). I even add random hearts in my hair...to my knowledge, people don't notice (and if they do, they never seem to point it out).\n\nI don't usually do all the strands in one layer at one time when I do curls. In one layer, I may have two lines of hair. In a separate layer, I add some details, that way it's easier for me to erase the runaway lines. I then merge the two layers, and keep going.\n\n\nWhen I was a kid, I had this ridiculous Barbie coloring book. My favorite part to color was her hair, because each large chunk, strand, or curl was a different color. Now, I hated Barbies as a kid, but the coloring books were inspiring. Working with curls triggered my memory of these coloring books, and voila! My hair commissions were born.\n\nAn example of one of these Barbie coloring pages can be seen here: http://cdn2.freecoloringprintable.com/freecoloringprintable-cdn/img-new/coloring-barbie-pages%20(8).gif \n\napparently the above link isnt working, so here's another coloring page: http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_AHs4I6HseB4/SZo714UaKuI/AAAAAAAAAJc/XSbzdHviFJY/s1600/barbie-coloring-pages-23.jpg\n\n\nI really don't know how many people care about this tutorial, or will use this, but if you do, please link me a picture of curly hair you create. I'd love to see it--curly hair is my favorite!",
