"writing": "Sonic rolled the piece of paper between his fingers, his gaze on it but he was unfocused and he barely registered the numbers printed on it. His fiddling tore it slightly where it was weak from a lone tear drop dampening it.\n\nThat little strip of paper now bore such painful memories for Sonic. He’d hoped to not even have it in his possession anymore, but it had been returned to him with an apologetic rejection. The numbers were his cell phone number, and the receiver was meant to be his unrequited crush. \n\nHere he was, though, still holding the little paper and still single. He’d smiled and waved off his crush’s excuses, then run for shelter in the nearest building, which happened to be a library. He pulled a random book from a random shelf so he wouldn’t look too out of place and sat at an empty table, the book open in front of him.\n\nSonic had no idea what book he had retrieved, and didn’t read a word of it. He was too occupied with getting a hold of himself and pushing away the brooding mood that was encroaching on his mind.\n\nHe took a few deep, steadying breaths. So what if he had been rejected? It happened to everyone, it was nothing to get depressed over. Sonic wasn’t the type of person to hold onto things.\n\nThe slip of paper fell from his fingers carelessly, and Sonic didn’t notice it land on the pages of the book. He closed the tome and returned it to the shelf, unknowingly returning it with a new addition pressed between the pages.\n\nSonic marched out of the library, his sorrows as abandoned as the piece of paper he tossed away.\n\n***\n\nThe next morning brought a new perspective and fresh outlook on life. Sonic would remain free and independent of obligations to other people, and would live the way he wanted as a bachelor. His new outlook confirmed, he grabbed his phone to do a search for the latest movies or events he could attend as a free man.\n\nTo his surprise, he was greeted with a notification for a text. He unlocked his phone and opened the message, which was from a number he didn’t recognize.\n\nHe opened it out of curiosity, figuring it would be spam, but it wouldn’t hurt to see if it wasn’t. It wasn’t an advertisement, but an actual message from, apparently, an actual person.\n\nIs anyone at this number?\n\nSonic stared at the message, baffled as to what to think of it. Why would someone text a number they didn’t know would even work? He should have deleted it. He had no idea who this person could be.\n\nInstead he found himself typing out a reply. It was an insane thing to do, but the echoes of pain inside him due to his recent rejection made him a little desperate for affection, even in the form of an anonymous text.\n\nYes. Who is this?\n\nSonic waited for a reply for only a brief moment before shutting his phone. He would be patient for the message he didn’t fully believe would come. Whoever it was would lose interest in their random number dialing.\n\nHe went about his morning routine, showering and brushing his teeth and so on, until he was interrupted by his phone vibrating. It was a little embarrassing how quickly and hopefully he snatched it up and examined the new text.\n\nWould you like to talk?\n\nNot only had the stranger ignored his question, but he instead was asking for conversation without introducing himself. Again, Sonic should ignore this strange person, but for some reason he typed another reply.\n\nAbout what?\n\nAnything\n\nThat sounded more than a little desperate. This mystery texter was sounder more and more like a total creep, or possibly a stalker.\n\nBut Sonic tended to believe in the best of people, and he didn’t want to pass judgement based on such slim evidence. The texter could just as easily be lonely.\n\nHe didn’t bother with asking who the person was again. If they wanted to divulge that information they would have the first time he asked.\n\nOkay. Seen any good movies lately?\n\n***\n\nSonic spent the rest of the day at his phone, texting with the stranger about any inane or profound topic that came to mind. They veered from discussing the merits of comic books to Nietzsche’s philosophy to their favorite pass times.\n\nHe’d wasted the day away in bed, never pausing in their conversation even as he stuffed his face with chili dogs for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. He nearly even forgot to call his little brother, Tails, currently away at an engineering camp, as he did every day.\n\nIt was the most engaging conversation Sonic had ever had, and it had been done entirely through texting. He found himself wanting to meet this person face to face, but he didn’t want to come off as dangerous to the texter. He kept himself from asking for a meeting after one day of chatting.\n\nWhat should I call you?\n\nSonic asked tentatively, though his tension wouldn’t be communicated through the text. He didn’t want to put off the stranger by asking something they weren’t comfortable answering.\n\nThere was a long pause in which Sonic’s nerves grew ever more jittery, and Justas he was starting to believe he’d repelled the stranger for good, his phone dinged.\n\nShadow\n\nThe name stuck with Sonic as he settled into bed after a texted goodbye and goodnight. He knew he had heard that name somewhere before, but he couldn’t recall where or when. It wasn’t a common name, so Sonic doubted he’d heard it from some other acquaintance.\n\nHe now knew Shadow was a local, because he’d explained that he’d found Sonic’s number in a library book. Shadow didn’t elaborate on why he decided to text that number in hopes of conversation with a complete stranger, but Sonic didn’t press the issue. He hoped to develop their friendship past words on a phone so he planned to ask more personal questions at a later date.\n\nIt still haunted him, though, and he could place his finger on why. The name made him nervous, some subconscious reaction to a memory long since dormant. But someone so sophisticated and intelligent, and so desperate for conversation, as Shadow seemed wouldn’t be a threat, would he?\n\nThe next week was spent in much the same way as the first day of texting. Sonic went about his life, his rejection long since banished from his mind, with phone always on hand to talk with Shadow.\n\nSonic had attempted to get a few more personal details from his texting buddy, but he seemed very hesitant to reveal even the slightest revelations concerning his identity. He wouldn’t even tell Sonic what species of Mobian he was.\n\nShadow had slipped up once by stating he hated how his quills sagged when they were waterlogged after a shower, and they’d laughed together via smiling emoticons about their long flowing quills falling down their backs.\n\nAt least Sonic knew he was something with quills, and Sonic chose to imagine him as a hedgehog like himself.\n\nHe’d once dared to ask exactly why he refused to share any details, even though Sonic had gone so far as to send him a selfie, something Shadow didn’t return. Shadow hadn’t answered for a full day, and when he had, Sonic’s repressed nerves made themselves known again.\n\nI don’t want you to hate me. If you knew who I am, you wouldn’t talk to me anymore.\n\nWhat the hell did that mean? Sonic knew he had heard Shadow’s name before, but he still couldn’t remember the context in which he heard it. Was he famous? Or rather, was he infamous?\n\nSonic still chose to believe that Shadow was a good person, and he had definitely given off the impression of severe loneliness. Sonic would continue to believe in his distant friend until he had a more concrete reason to doubt him.\n\nI don’t hate anybody. I definitely don’t hate you. But it’s your choice, I won’t pressure you.\n\nI appreciate that\n\n***\n\nMore time passed and more texted conversations came and went. Their long distance friendship lasted a month, then two and then three months when the texts stopped coming.\n\nIt was also at that time that Sonic finally learned where he had heard Shadow’s name before.\n\nThe biggest story on the news was the trial of someone accused of murder, a hedgehog named Shadow Robotnik. The accused had been under house arrest for the past three months, and he had supposedly committed his crime the morning he texted Sonic for the first time.\n\nSonic had heard his name when some famed scientist that was raising him left him with a relative to go off on an expedition of great import. The news had mentioned him in conjunction with the scientists name, and Sonic had mostly forgotten it.\n\nShadow claimed he had been alone at the library on the morning in question, but he had no one to corroborate that fact and therefor had no alibi.\n\nNo one but Sonic.\n\nThe only way Shadow could have gotten his phone number was if he had found the number in the library book Sonic had left it in, and Sonic had their texted conversations saved in his phone, meaning he had Shadow’s text that said he’d been in the library that morning.\n\nSonic rushed to the courthouse and bullied his way into a private meeting with Shadow’s lawyer just before the trial got started, and presented the proof of Shadow’s alibi. The lawyer stated that while the texts weren’t concrete proof they might just be enough to cast doubt on the prosecution’s argument.\n\nSonic waited nervously outside the doors of the court room while the trial went on. He paced across the tiles until an annoyed security guard told him to sit down or he’d have to leave.\n\nWhen the doors opened, Sonic saw Shadow for the first time.\n\nHis looks suited his name, as he was darkly furred with only slight highlights of red and a single tuft of white among all the black. His eyes were the color of freshly spilt blood, and looked dull and sad. Sonic examined his wrists for handcuffs but found none, and his lawyer was grinning ear to ear.\n\nIt seemed he’d won their case, but why did he seem so depressed about it?\n\nSonic approached Shadow nervously, unsure if he’d actually want to meet his texting buddy like this, even though Sonic had been the one to keep him out of jail. His lawyer spotted him and pulled him forward.\n\n“How could you not tell me you sent a text like that to corroborate your alibi? You’re lucky this young man came in, that text saved our case!” The lawyer joyfully bragged.\n\nShadow’s sharp eyes landed on Sonic, and the blue hedgehog flinched a little at the anger he saw in them, but it quickly faded away to a dull carelessness.\n\n“I see. Thank you, Sonic.” Shadow didn’t seem at all sincere in his thanks, but Sonic dismissed the thought. Perhaps he was simply in shock. He’d just narrowly avoided a life sentence, after all.\n\n“Nice to finally see you in person.” Sonic cheerfully greeted. That seemed to draw a slight smile out a Shadow and give a little life to his eyes.\n\n“Yes. I’m glad to meet you properly.”\n\nShadow must have believed Sonic would think him a murderer because of the charges against him, but now that he was cleared and Sonic was declaring his joy at meeting him, it seemed Shadow no longer had those old hesitations.\n\nSonic looked forward to spending time in person with his no longer long distance friend.\n\n***\n\nThere wasn’t a week that went by without a meeting between Sonic and Shadow, and not a day passed without a few texts back and forth.\n\nTheir lunch meet ups turned into dinner dates, and their parting hugs turned into parting kisses. Sonic fell deeply and madly in love with Shadow, and Shadow returned his feelings wholly and passionately.\n\nSlowly, the story of the murder he had been accused of was revealed to Sonic.\n\nShadow’s adoptive father, Gerald, had left on a trip to the Arctic for research purposes, and the foster system left Shadow in the care of a friend of Gerald’s, an imposing man named Black Doom. The day Gerald was meant to return came and passed by without a sign from him, and it was discovered his research team had gone missing.\n\nGerald was presumed dead, and Black Doom gained full custody of him. His adoptive father proved, once he had no obligation to return Shadow in one piece, to be brutally abusive.\n\nWhen Black Doom was found dead in his home, a knife in his back, Shadow was promptly arrested for the crime.\n\nShortly before the murder, Gerald had miraculously reappeared, having been rescued from the Arctic after surviving the brutal conditions for months, an amazing tale tainted by murder most foul. Gerald had tried to regain custody of Shadow, but had failed.\n\nSonic had had some serious concerns over Shadow being a minor, as Sonic had just turned eighteen himself, but apparently he’d turned eighteen during his three months of house arrest, making their relationship entirely legal. They ended up living together, along with Sonic’s little brother.\n\nSonic introduced his boyfriend to Tails, who welcomed Shadow into their little family with joy. Sonic explained they were both foster kids as well, and when Sonic had gotten himself emancipated he took custody of Tails to keep him safe and happy.\n\nThey’d both been screwed more than once by the system, and it was something that ultimately made them stronger and allowed them to understand one another and be that much closer.\n\nThey quarreled often, but made up soon after, and their relationship was still strong after a full year.\n\nThey touched each other liberally, but they’d never gone all the way with each other. Sonic was a romantic, and he wanted their first time to come in exactly the right way.\n\nShadow was working as an assistant to Gerald and frequently came home late after a long day of running tests and researching intensely. He was often exhausted and sore, and Sonic wanted to give him a night to treasure after working so hard. So, the night Tails was away at a sleep over with a friend, he went to work.\n\nHis boyfriend came home, his body sagging and his face drooping, but with a smile on his lips. He enjoyed his work, even though it tired him out so much.\n\nHe blinked in surprise at the sight of his home, all the lights shut off and the only light coming from candles spread out everywhere, filling the house with his favorite scent, strawberry.\n\nHe inhaled deeply and felt rejuvenated by the sweet scent, and his eyes were drawn to a path of candles leading him from the foyer and up the stairs. He followed the path laid out for him and he was led, unsurprisingly, to the bedroom, in which his lover awaited.\n\nSonic spread his arms out and did a twirl to gesture to the romantically decorated bedroom, with every surface scattered with rose petals and candles flickering in the dark.\n\n“Sonic…?” He began to ask, but Sonic pressed a finger to his lips to hush him. Shadow licked the finger playfully and Sonic laughed before pulling him over to the bed and laying him down on his stomach, pulling Shadow’s shirt off as he did so, quickly following with removing his own.\n\n“I think I’d prefer to be sitting on top of you.” Shadow teased, and Sonic rolled his eyes.\n\n“I told you to shush. Let me spoil you, okay?”\n\n“Okay. Spoil me to your heart’s content.”\n\nSonic’s hands dug into the muscles of his back, finding the stress knots and pressing into them until they were eased away. Shadow groaned and relaxed under Sonic’s touch, the stresses of the day disappearing from his mind and body.\n\n“I’m grateful.” He murmured, half hoping Sonic wouldn’t hear him.\n\n“For what?”\n\nNo such luck, it seemed. Shadow sighed in resignation and answered as honestly as he could.\n\n“For you. For finding your number that day.”\n\nSonic laughed, “Yeah, who’d have thought you’d get out of jail time ‘cause of a phone number you found in a book and decided to text randomly.”\n\nShadow forced out a laugh, which sounded casual enough and didn’t seem to raise Sonic’s suspicions as he just kept massaging his back, focusing on finding his points of tension, of which there were many, and banishing them.\n\nIn truth, the decision to text Sonic hadn’t been random at all, but born of desperation. But Sonic didn’t need to know that. It was far in the past, and had no place in the happy life they shared together.\n\nShadow’s body was massaged until he was boneless and relaxed. He sighed happily as Sonic rolled him over and straddled him.\n\nSonic shamelessly ground their clothed pelvises together, surprising Shadow.\n\n“I thought you wanted to wait…” Shadow began hesitantly.\n\n“I did. I waited until I was ready, and now I’m ready.” Sonic declared, starting to unbutton his own pants.\n\n“Are you sure? I want you, but I don’t want to make you do anything you don’t want to.” Shadow asked as Sonic got to work on Shadow’s pants once his own were removed.\n\n“I want you too, Shadow. Just relax and let me make you feel amazing.” Sonic’s voice was a sultry rumble deep in his throat, hoarse with desire. By the time Sonic had gotten Shadow’s pants off, the dark hedgehog was hard and throbbing.\n\n“Excited, I see.” Sonic said before licking his lips and leaning over to suck on Shadow’s tip.\n\nShadow groaned and barely managed to keep his hips pinned to the bed as Sonic took more of his length into his mouth, swirling his tongue around the shaft as he went.\n\nHe kissed and licked the slit when he pulled up, then sucked hard as he swallowed Shadow’s girth to the best of his ability. Any skin flesh that Sonic couldn’t take was stroked and rubbed by his generous hands.\n\n“Sonic, stop, I’m going to…” Sonic obeyed Shadow gasped request and shimmied up Shadow’s body until their groins were in line with one another.\n\nSonic reached behind himself and inserted a finger into his passage, starting to stretch himself for Shadow.\n\n“I love you, Sonic. You know, don’t you?”\n\nShadow seemed strangely reticent in doing this. Sonic used his unoccupied hand to touch Shadow’s face.\n\n“I know that, and I love you. I’m ready for this, aren’t you?”\n\nShadow nodded, his eyes going half lidded with fondness. Sonic hoped that was enough to rid Shadow of doubts, because he added a second finger and was scissoring himself, nearly ready to take Shadow fully into himself.\n\n“Thank you for trusting me.” Shadow whispered, his voice sounding rough from suppressed tears. “Even though…even though I don’t deserve it.”\n\nSonic kissed his lover, and chose to discuss whatever was bothering him another day. They had a lifetime together to work through any insecurities they had.\n\nHe withdrew his fingers and sat up, placing his ass over Shadow’s length. He looked to Shadow for permission, which was given with a shaky nod.\n\nShadow’s cock was moistened with nothing more than saliva, and Sonic regretted that as he descended, taking Shadow inside.\n\nHe went slow, his legs shaking with the effort to hold himself up, and Shadow helped by placing his hands on Sonic’s hips to give him some support.\n\nHis burden eased, Sonic had an easier time sliding down and filling himself. Shadow focused on Sonic; his eyes shut tight, his lips parted and releasing little moans of pleasure and slight pain, his face twisted in confused sensations, to gauge how he was doing and slowed whenever he was in obvious pain.\n\nWith care, Sonic sunk fully down and sat on Shadow’s lap, stuffed with Shadow’s cock.\n\n“Ahh, you’re really big. I just need…a second.” Sonic gasped, and Shadow comfortingly stroked his sides and ran his thumbs over his hipbones until his eyes fluttered shut with comfortable pleasure.\n\nHe strained his legs to lift himself up and lower himself back down again, praising himself for being a prolific runner and strengthening his muscles. From the wonderful pressure against his insides, running had proved a worthwhile exercise if it allowed him to be penetrated so deeply as he rode on top of his lover.\n\nHe slowly allowed himself to speed up until he was rising and falling as rapidly as he could manage. Shadow met his downward falls with upward thrusts to hit his prostate and make his insides burn pleasurably with delicious friction and stretching.\n\n“Shit, Shadow. You feel so good…”\n\n“You too. I’m going to…I’m going to cum. Can I…inside you?”\n\n“Yes, please, yes!”\n\nShadow acquiesced and released with a final deep thrust, gripping Sonic’s hips tight and keeping him down so not a drop of his seed would be lost. Sonic reveled in the feeling of being full of Shadow’s cum and felt warm inside and out.\n\nPanting and gasping, they collapsed side by side in bed. Sonic snuggled close and buried his face into Shadow chest fur, giggling a little at the feeling of hot cum escaping his body and staining the sheets and his own thighs.\n\nShadow held him tight with arms around his torso and whispered endearments into his ear, and they fell asleep in each other’s arms to the sounds of murmured declarations of love.\n\n***\n\nOne year and three months prior\n\nShadow watched his father and Black Doom scream obscenities at one another. Threats were made, things that Shadow knew Gerald would never follow up on, and he resisted the childish temptation to block out the noise with hands over his ears.\n\nGerald was furious at the state he’d returned to find Shadow in. Bruises and improperly set broken bones littered his body, and he suspected he’d find yet more bruises and even scars under his fur.\n\nAnd yet he’d been refused custody. Black Doom must have bribed someone to keep his punching bag in his care.\n\nSick of the pointless screaming, Shadow emerged from his room and demanded they stop the pointless argument. Black Doom gave him a condescending look, while Gerald approached him and tried to soothe him with meaningless placation.\n\nHe wasn’t aware of the next few moments, only what resulted from it. He saw Black Doom approaching from behind, knife in hand intent on stabbing his father in the back, and he reacted.\n\nHe must have wrestled the knife from Black Doom and cut himself while doing so, a thin slice making his palm ache. \n\nAnd now Black Doom’s body was on the kitchen floor, that same knife buried in his back.\n\nGerald was looking down at the body with shock, as if he couldn’t believe what was in front of his eyes.\n\nHe blinked and broke out of his catatonia, and turned to Shadow sharply.\n\nShadow looked up at him with fear. What would become of him now?\n\n“Shadow, listen to me. A time of death can only be estimated within about an hour. I’ll wrap your hand, and then you need to get to somewhere public. Talk to people. Call or text or email them if you can so there’s a record of where you are. We need to get you an alibi. Go!”\n\nShadow left, seeing Gerald carefully begin to wipe away Shadow’s prints from the knife.\n\nHe fled to the nearest public building he could find, the library. He took a few steadying breaths before entering the quiet halls.\n\nHe hurried to a shelf and picked out a book at random, and flipped through its pages without reading a word of them.\n\nChaos, what had he done? What was going to happen to him? Even if Gerald wanted him to get away with what had happened, Shadow had no idea if he could bear the guilt of murdering someone in cold blood. He deserved to go to jail, not walk away a free man.\n\nBut he would do as his father had said. He didn’t want to give Gerald any more reasons to be disappointed in him.\n\nHe took out his phone and scanned his contact list, barely seeing the letters. Rouge? "writing_bbcode_parsed": "Sonic rolled the piece of paper between his fingers, his gaze on it but he was unfocused and he barely registered the numbers printed on it. His fiddling tore it slightly where it was weak from a lone tear drop dampening it.

That little strip of paper now bore such painful memories for Sonic. He’d hoped to not even have it in his possession anymore, but it had been returned to him with an apologetic rejection. The numbers were his cell phone number, and the receiver was meant to be his unrequited crush.

Here he was, though, still holding the little paper and still single. He’d smiled and waved off his crush’s excuses, then run for shelter in the nearest building, which happened to be a library. He pulled a random book from a random shelf so he wouldn’t look too out of place and sat at an empty table, the book open in front of him.

Sonic had no idea what book he had retrieved, and didn’t read a word of it. He was too occupied with getting a hold of himself and pushing away the brooding mood that was encroaching on his mind.

He took a few deep, steadying breaths. So what if he had been rejected? It happened to everyone, it was nothing to get depressed over. Sonic wasn’t the type of person to hold onto things.

The slip of paper fell from his fingers carelessly, and Sonic didn’t notice it land on the pages of the book. He closed the tome and returned it to the shelf, unknowingly returning it with a new addition pressed between the pages.

Sonic marched out of the library, his sorrows as abandoned as the piece of paper he tossed away.

***

The next morning brought a new perspective and fresh outlook on life. Sonic would remain free and independent of obligations to other people, and would live the way he wanted as a bachelor. His new outlook confirmed, he grabbed his phone to do a search for the latest movies or events he could attend as a free man.

To his surprise, he was greeted with a notification for a text. He unlocked his phone and opened the message, which was from a number he didn’t recognize.

He opened it out of curiosity, figuring it would be spam, but it wouldn’t hurt to see if it wasn’t. It wasn’t an advertisement, but an actual message from, apparently, an actual person.

Is anyone at this number?

Sonic stared at the message, baffled as to what to think of it. Why would someone text a number they didn’t know would even work? He should have deleted it. He had no idea who this person could be.

Instead he found himself typing out a reply. It was an insane thing to do, but the echoes of pain inside him due to his recent rejection made him a little desperate for affection, even in the form of an anonymous text.

Yes. Who is this?

Sonic waited for a reply for only a brief moment before shutting his phone. He would be patient for the message he didn’t fully believe would come. Whoever it was would lose interest in their random number dialing.

He went about his morning routine, showering and brushing his teeth and so on, until he was interrupted by his phone vibrating. It was a little embarrassing how quickly and hopefully he snatched it up and examined the new text.

Would you like to talk?

Not only had the stranger ignored his question, but he instead was asking for conversation without introducing himself. Again, Sonic should ignore this strange person, but for some reason he typed another reply.

About what?

Anything

That sounded more than a little desperate. This mystery texter was sounder more and more like a total creep, or possibly a stalker.

But Sonic tended to believe in the best of people, and he didn’t want to pass judgement based on such slim evidence. The texter could just as easily be lonely.

He didn’t bother with asking who the person was again. If they wanted to divulge that information they would have the first time he asked.

Okay. Seen any good movies lately?

***

Sonic spent the rest of the day at his phone, texting with the stranger about any inane or profound topic that came to mind. They veered from discussing the merits of comic books to Nietzsche’s philosophy to their favorite pass times.

He’d wasted the day away in bed, never pausing in their conversation even as he stuffed his face with chili dogs for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. He nearly even forgot to call his little brother, Tails, currently away at an engineering camp, as he did every day.

It was the most engaging conversation Sonic had ever had, and it had been done entirely through texting. He found himself wanting to meet this person face to face, but he didn’t want to come off as dangerous to the texter. He kept himself from asking for a meeting after one day of chatting.

What should I call you?

Sonic asked tentatively, though his tension wouldn’t be communicated through the text. He didn’t want to put off the stranger by asking something they weren’t comfortable answering.

There was a long pause in which Sonic’s nerves grew ever more jittery, and Justas he was starting to believe he’d repelled the stranger for good, his phone dinged.

Shadow

The name stuck with Sonic as he settled into bed after a texted goodbye and goodnight. He knew he had heard that name somewhere before, but he couldn’t recall where or when. It wasn’t a common name, so Sonic doubted he’d heard it from some other acquaintance.

He now knew Shadow was a local, because he’d explained that he’d found Sonic’s number in a library book. Shadow didn’t elaborate on why he decided to text that number in hopes of conversation with a complete stranger, but Sonic didn’t press the issue. He hoped to develop their friendship past words on a phone so he planned to ask more personal questions at a later date.

It still haunted him, though, and he could place his finger on why. The name made him nervous, some subconscious reaction to a memory long since dormant. But someone so sophisticated and intelligent, and so desperate for conversation, as Shadow seemed wouldn’t be a threat, would he?

The next week was spent in much the same way as the first day of texting. Sonic went about his life, his rejection long since banished from his mind, with phone always on hand to talk with Shadow.

Sonic had attempted to get a few more personal details from his texting buddy, but he seemed very hesitant to reveal even the slightest revelations concerning his identity. He wouldn’t even tell Sonic what species of Mobian he was.

Shadow had slipped up once by stating he hated how his quills sagged when they were waterlogged after a shower, and they’d laughed together via smiling emoticons about their long flowing quills falling down their backs.

At least Sonic knew he was something with quills, and Sonic chose to imagine him as a hedgehog like himself.

He’d once dared to ask exactly why he refused to share any details, even though Sonic had gone so far as to send him a selfie, something Shadow didn’t return. Shadow hadn’t answered for a full day, and when he had, Sonic’s repressed nerves made themselves known again.

I don’t want you to hate me. If you knew who I am, you wouldn’t talk to me anymore.

What the hell did that mean? Sonic knew he had heard Shadow’s name before, but he still couldn’t remember the context in which he heard it. Was he famous? Or rather, was he infamous?

Sonic still chose to believe that Shadow was a good person, and he had definitely given off the impression of severe loneliness. Sonic would continue to believe in his distant friend until he had a more concrete reason to doubt him.

I don’t hate anybody. I definitely don’t hate you. But it’s your choice, I won’t pressure you.

I appreciate that

***

More time passed and more texted conversations came and went. Their long distance friendship lasted a month, then two and then three months when the texts stopped coming.

It was also at that time that Sonic finally learned where he had heard Shadow’s name before.

The biggest story on the news was the trial of someone accused of murder, a hedgehog named Shadow Robotnik. The accused had been under house arrest for the past three months, and he had supposedly committed his crime the morning he texted Sonic for the first time.

Sonic had heard his name when some famed scientist that was raising him left him with a relative to go off on an expedition of great import. The news had mentioned him in conjunction with the scientists name, and Sonic had mostly forgotten it.

Shadow claimed he had been alone at the library on the morning in question, but he had no one to corroborate that fact and therefor had no alibi.

No one but Sonic.

The only way Shadow could have gotten his phone number was if he had found the number in the library book Sonic had left it in, and Sonic had their texted conversations saved in his phone, meaning he had Shadow’s text that said he’d been in the library that morning.

Sonic rushed to the courthouse and bullied his way into a private meeting with Shadow’s lawyer just before the trial got started, and presented the proof of Shadow’s alibi. The lawyer stated that while the texts weren’t concrete proof they might just be enough to cast doubt on the prosecution’s argument.

Sonic waited nervously outside the doors of the court room while the trial went on. He paced across the tiles until an annoyed security guard told him to sit down or he’d have to leave.

When the doors opened, Sonic saw Shadow for the first time.

His looks suited his name, as he was darkly furred with only slight highlights of red and a single tuft of white among all the black. His eyes were the color of freshly spilt blood, and looked dull and sad. Sonic examined his wrists for handcuffs but found none, and his lawyer was grinning ear to ear.

It seemed he’d won their case, but why did he seem so depressed about it?

Sonic approached Shadow nervously, unsure if he’d actually want to meet his texting buddy like this, even though Sonic had been the one to keep him out of jail. His lawyer spotted him and pulled him forward.

“How could you not tell me you sent a text like that to corroborate your alibi? You’re lucky this young man came in, that text saved our case!” The lawyer joyfully bragged.

Shadow’s sharp eyes landed on Sonic, and the blue hedgehog flinched a little at the anger he saw in them, but it quickly faded away to a dull carelessness.

“I see. Thank you, Sonic.” Shadow didn’t seem at all sincere in his thanks, but Sonic dismissed the thought. Perhaps he was simply in shock. He’d just narrowly avoided a life sentence, after all.

“Nice to finally see you in person.” Sonic cheerfully greeted. That seemed to draw a slight smile out a Shadow and give a little life to his eyes.

“Yes. I’m glad to meet you properly.”

Shadow must have believed Sonic would think him a murderer because of the charges against him, but now that he was cleared and Sonic was declaring his joy at meeting him, it seemed Shadow no longer had those old hesitations.

Sonic looked forward to spending time in person with his no longer long distance friend.

***

There wasn’t a week that went by without a meeting between Sonic and Shadow, and not a day passed without a few texts back and forth.

Their lunch meet ups turned into dinner dates, and their parting hugs turned into parting kisses. Sonic fell deeply and madly in love with Shadow, and Shadow returned his feelings wholly and passionately.

Slowly, the story of the murder he had been accused of was revealed to Sonic.

Shadow’s adoptive father, Gerald, had left on a trip to the Arctic for research purposes, and the foster system left Shadow in the care of a friend of Gerald’s, an imposing man named Black Doom. The day Gerald was meant to return came and passed by without a sign from him, and it was discovered his research team had gone missing.

Gerald was presumed dead, and Black Doom gained full custody of him. His adoptive father proved, once he had no obligation to return Shadow in one piece, to be brutally abusive.

When Black Doom was found dead in his home, a knife in his back, Shadow was promptly arrested for the crime.

Shortly before the murder, Gerald had miraculously reappeared, having been rescued from the Arctic after surviving the brutal conditions for months, an amazing tale tainted by murder most foul. Gerald had tried to regain custody of Shadow, but had failed.

Sonic had had some serious concerns over Shadow being a minor, as Sonic had just turned eighteen himself, but apparently he’d turned eighteen during his three months of house arrest, making their relationship entirely legal. They ended up living together, along with Sonic’s little brother.

Sonic introduced his boyfriend to Tails, who welcomed Shadow into their little family with joy. Sonic explained they were both foster kids as well, and when Sonic had gotten himself emancipated he took custody of Tails to keep him safe and happy.

They’d both been screwed more than once by the system, and it was something that ultimately made them stronger and allowed them to understand one another and be that much closer.

They quarreled often, but made up soon after, and their relationship was still strong after a full year.

They touched each other liberally, but they’d never gone all the way with each other. Sonic was a romantic, and he wanted their first time to come in exactly the right way.

Shadow was working as an assistant to Gerald and frequently came home late after a long day of running tests and researching intensely. He was often exhausted and sore, and Sonic wanted to give him a night to treasure after working so hard. So, the night Tails was away at a sleep over with a friend, he went to work.

His boyfriend came home, his body sagging and his face drooping, but with a smile on his lips. He enjoyed his work, even though it tired him out so much.

He blinked in surprise at the sight of his home, all the lights shut off and the only light coming from candles spread out everywhere, filling the house with his favorite scent, strawberry.

He inhaled deeply and felt rejuvenated by the sweet scent, and his eyes were drawn to a path of candles leading him from the foyer and up the stairs. He followed the path laid out for him and he was led, unsurprisingly, to the bedroom, in which his lover awaited.

Sonic spread his arms out and did a twirl to gesture to the romantically decorated bedroom, with every surface scattered with rose petals and candles flickering in the dark.

“Sonic…?” He began to ask, but Sonic pressed a finger to his lips to hush him. Shadow licked the finger playfully and Sonic laughed before pulling him over to the bed and laying him down on his stomach, pulling Shadow’s shirt off as he did so, quickly following with removing his own.

“I think I’d prefer to be sitting on top of you.” Shadow teased, and Sonic rolled his eyes.

“I told you to shush. Let me spoil you, okay?”

“Okay. Spoil me to your heart’s content.”

Sonic’s hands dug into the muscles of his back, finding the stress knots and pressing into them until they were eased away. Shadow groaned and relaxed under Sonic’s touch, the stresses of the day disappearing from his mind and body.

“I’m grateful.” He murmured, half hoping Sonic wouldn’t hear him.

“For what?”

No such luck, it seemed. Shadow sighed in resignation and answered as honestly as he could.

“For you. For finding your number that day.”

Sonic laughed, “Yeah, who’d have thought you’d get out of jail time ‘cause of a phone number you found in a book and decided to text randomly.”

Shadow forced out a laugh, which sounded casual enough and didn’t seem to raise Sonic’s suspicions as he just kept massaging his back, focusing on finding his points of tension, of which there were many, and banishing them.

In truth, the decision to text Sonic hadn’t been random at all, but born of desperation. But Sonic didn’t need to know that. It was far in the past, and had no place in the happy life they shared together.

Shadow’s body was massaged until he was boneless and relaxed. He sighed happily as Sonic rolled him over and straddled him.

Sonic shamelessly ground their clothed pelvises together, surprising Shadow.

“I thought you wanted to wait…” Shadow began hesitantly.

“I did. I waited until I was ready, and now I’m ready.” Sonic declared, starting to unbutton his own pants.

“Are you sure? I want you, but I don’t want to make you do anything you don’t want to.” Shadow asked as Sonic got to work on Shadow’s pants once his own were removed.

“I want you too, Shadow. Just relax and let me make you feel amazing.” Sonic’s voice was a sultry rumble deep in his throat, hoarse with desire. By the time Sonic had gotten Shadow’s pants off, the dark hedgehog was hard and throbbing.

“Excited, I see.” Sonic said before licking his lips and leaning over to suck on Shadow’s tip.

Shadow groaned and barely managed to keep his hips pinned to the bed as Sonic took more of his length into his mouth, swirling his tongue around the shaft as he went.

He kissed and licked the slit when he pulled up, then sucked hard as he swallowed Shadow’s girth to the best of his ability. Any skin flesh that Sonic couldn’t take was stroked and rubbed by his generous hands.

“Sonic, stop, I’m going to…” Sonic obeyed Shadow gasped request and shimmied up Shadow’s body until their groins were in line with one another.

Sonic reached behind himself and inserted a finger into his passage, starting to stretch himself for Shadow.

“I love you, Sonic. You know, don’t you?”

Shadow seemed strangely reticent in doing this. Sonic used his unoccupied hand to touch Shadow’s face.

“I know that, and I love you. I’m ready for this, aren’t you?”

Shadow nodded, his eyes going half lidded with fondness. Sonic hoped that was enough to rid Shadow of doubts, because he added a second finger and was scissoring himself, nearly ready to take Shadow fully into himself.

“Thank you for trusting me.” Shadow whispered, his voice sounding rough from suppressed tears. “Even though…even though I don’t deserve it.”

Sonic kissed his lover, and chose to discuss whatever was bothering him another day. They had a lifetime together to work through any insecurities they had.

He withdrew his fingers and sat up, placing his ass over Shadow’s length. He looked to Shadow for permission, which was given with a shaky nod.

Shadow’s cock was moistened with nothing more than saliva, and Sonic regretted that as he descended, taking Shadow inside.

He went slow, his legs shaking with the effort to hold himself up, and Shadow helped by placing his hands on Sonic’s hips to give him some support.

His burden eased, Sonic had an easier time sliding down and filling himself. Shadow focused on Sonic; his eyes shut tight, his lips parted and releasing little moans of pleasure and slight pain, his face twisted in confused sensations, to gauge how he was doing and slowed whenever he was in obvious pain.

With care, Sonic sunk fully down and sat on Shadow’s lap, stuffed with Shadow’s cock.

“Ahh, you’re really big. I just need…a second.” Sonic gasped, and Shadow comfortingly stroked his sides and ran his thumbs over his hipbones until his eyes fluttered shut with comfortable pleasure.

He strained his legs to lift himself up and lower himself back down again, praising himself for being a prolific runner and strengthening his muscles. From the wonderful pressure against his insides, running had proved a worthwhile exercise if it allowed him to be penetrated so deeply as he rode on top of his lover.

He slowly allowed himself to speed up until he was rising and falling as rapidly as he could manage. Shadow met his downward falls with upward thrusts to hit his prostate and make his insides burn pleasurably with delicious friction and stretching.

“Shit, Shadow. You feel so good…”

“You too. I’m going to…I’m going to cum. Can I…inside you?”

“Yes, please, yes!”

Shadow acquiesced and released with a final deep thrust, gripping Sonic’s hips tight and keeping him down so not a drop of his seed would be lost. Sonic reveled in the feeling of being full of Shadow’s cum and felt warm inside and out.

Panting and gasping, they collapsed side by side in bed. Sonic snuggled close and buried his face into Shadow chest fur, giggling a little at the feeling of hot cum escaping his body and staining the sheets and his own thighs.

Shadow held him tight with arms around his torso and whispered endearments into his ear, and they fell asleep in each other’s arms to the sounds of murmured declarations of love.

***

One year and three months prior

Shadow watched his father and Black Doom scream obscenities at one another. Threats were made, things that Shadow knew Gerald would never follow up on, and he resisted the childish temptation to block out the noise with hands over his ears.

Gerald was furious at the state he’d returned to find Shadow in. Bruises and improperly set broken bones littered his body, and he suspected he’d find yet more bruises and even scars under his fur.

And yet he’d been refused custody. Black Doom must have bribed someone to keep his punching bag in his care.

Sick of the pointless screaming, Shadow emerged from his room and demanded they stop the pointless argument. Black Doom gave him a condescending look, while Gerald approached him and tried to soothe him with meaningless placation.

He wasn’t aware of the next few moments, only what resulted from it. He saw Black Doom approaching from behind, knife in hand intent on stabbing his father in the back, and he reacted.

He must have wrestled the knife from Black Doom and cut himself while doing so, a thin slice making his palm ache.

And now Black Doom’s body was on the kitchen floor, that same knife buried in his back.

Gerald was looking down at the body with shock, as if he couldn’t believe what was in front of his eyes.

He blinked and broke out of his catatonia, and turned to Shadow sharply.

Shadow looked up at him with fear. What would become of him now?

“Shadow, listen to me. A time of death can only be estimated within about an hour. I’ll wrap your hand, and then you need to get to somewhere public. Talk to people. Call or text or email them if you can so there’s a record of where you are. We need to get you an alibi. Go!”

Shadow left, seeing Gerald carefully begin to wipe away Shadow’s prints from the knife.

He fled to the nearest public building he could find, the library. He took a few steadying breaths before entering the quiet halls.

He hurried to a shelf and picked out a book at random, and flipped through its pages without reading a word of them.

Chaos, what had he done? What was going to happen to him? Even if Gerald wanted him to get away with what had happened, Shadow had no idea if he could bear the guilt of murdering someone in cold blood. He deserved to go to jail, not walk away a free man.

But he would do as his father had said. He didn’t want to give Gerald any more reasons to be disappointed in him.

He took out his phone and scanned his contact list, barely seeing the letters. Rouge? No, he wouldn’t involve his closest companion in this.
