He carried Shadow into the room the attending doctor guided them to, and Rouge was taken to the room next door to receive the same treatment.\nThe moment the doctor arrived to attend to him, Shadow asked, “How is Rouge?”\nSonic shook his head in exasperated fondness. Shadow should have asked about his own bleeding wounds.\n“Your friend is being treated as we speak. Please, we need to disinfect and bandage those cuts.”\nThe doctor stitched Shadow back together and checked on the baby’s vital signs. Again, the baby was unharmed due to the Chaos Energy shielding it. Shadow stroked his belly once the doctor departed, leaving the lovers alone.\n“Omega is moping outside. He says he’s sorry he couldn’t keep you from getting hurt.”\nShadow shook his head, “It’s not his fault. It’s the fault of whatever is doing this. I appreciate you being with me.”\nShadow liked that Omega was so easy to talk to. He knew that with his words Omega would know there were no hard feelings between them, and that the issue was resolved with only that.\n“Is Rouge being repaired?”\n“Yes, she’ll be alright.”\n“Scanning. The small thing seems unharmed.”\nShadow smiled and stroked his belly again. “Yes, he’s very resilient.”\nSonic perked his ears up. “He? You want a boy?”\n“I…” Shadow blinked, seeming strangely confused. “For some reason I feel sure that he’s a boy. No, not a feeling. I know he’s a boy. What does that mean?”\n“I have an important interruption to make.” Omega said. “I know what the entity is that has been attacking Shadow.”\n“Well, tell us!” Sonic demanded, but was shushed by Shadow before he could continue shouting.\n“It is Mephiles.”\n“Mephiles?” Shadow repeated.\n“But he…he doesn’t even exist anymore! I erased that whole timeline, he was never created!”\n“The entity is not alive. It has no biological markers and no physical form. I do not know if it is even sentient.”\nThe trio went quiet in contemplation. None of them had any knowledge that would provide answers to these strange events.\n“So, some shred of Mephiles is trying to kill me.” Shadow affirmed.\n“Or trying to kill our baby.” Sonic continued, giving voice to Shadow and Sonic’s greatest fear.\n“That won’t happen.” Shadow fiercely returned. “Mephiles could kill me and our baby would be fine. It’s been protected all this time, and I’m late enough in my pregnancy that he could survive an emergency C-Section. No matter what, he’ll be okay.”\n“Please, don’t say things like that.” Sonic begged his lover, “Don’t talk like that. Nobody is going to die. We’ll figure this out, and you’ll have our baby, and we’ll be happy together, all three of us.”\nSonic gripped Shadow’s hands tight, tears pouring from his eyes. Shadow lifted his hands and kissed them.\n“I’m sorry, you’re right.”\nIf only either of them believed that.\n***\nThe final blow came the next night while Shadow was sleeping with Sonic wide awake and at his bedside. He kept his hands on Shadow, always touching him to reassure himself of his safety, as he opened up his senses to alert him to anything strange present.\nThere was a shimmer in the air, a fluctuation in the natural flow of Chaos Energy. The presence was so weak it was clear it was on its last legs. He cried out in pain and Sonic leapt for him, almost having him in his grasp before he was tossed to the side again, this time his belly was on a crash course for the wall.\nShadow reacted quickly and tucked his head down so that his skull would impact ahead of his stomach. Blood streamed into his eyes from the blow, and darkness claimed him.\n“No!” Sonic screamed, and in the back of his mind he felt the presence of whatever remained of Mephiles shrivel and fade away, having lost the last remains of its life force in this final attack. Yet, as it faded, Sonic sensed smug satisfaction from it.\nIt couldn’t have succeeded. Shadow couldn’t be dead, he just couldn’t be. Sonic would tear the universe apart before he let it take Shadow and his child from him.\nSonic slammed the nurse call button, which was useless as security guards burst into the room due to the noise soon after he pressed it. “Initial scans show it has no physical form. Biological scans are of no use. Accessing database of non-biological data.”
“Non-biological?” Shadow questioned. “You mean such as Chaos Energy?”
“Affirmative.”
Omega went quiet except for a slight buzzing as he searched his memory. Shadow stayed on alert, waiting for the unknown presence to make a move. He felt safe though in Omega’s presence. The robot was a match even for him at his best, he would be safe with Omega near.

They pushed the call nurse button and requested their robotic friend be brought to their room. A lot of exceptions were being made for them, and a massive walking death machine strutting around their place of healing was asking a lot.
Still, they complied, and Omega entered the room.
“Shadow, it is good to see you have been repaired.”
“Thank you, Omega. I appreciate you being with me.”
Shadow liked that Omega was so easy to talk to. He knew that with his words Omega would know there were no hard feelings between them, and that the issue was resolved with only that.
“Is Rouge being repaired?”
“Yes, she’ll be alright.”
“Scanning. The small thing seems unharmed.”
Shadow smiled and stroked his belly again. “Yes, he’s very resilient.”
Sonic perked his ears up. “He? You want a boy?”
“I…” Shadow blinked, seeming strangely confused. “For some reason I feel sure that he’s a boy. No, not a feeling. I know he’s a boy. I know it!” Shadow insisted, seeming disturbed by his own words.

“It is Mephiles.”

“But he…he doesn’t even exist anymore! I erased that whole timeline, he was never created!”
“The entity is not alive. It has no biological markers and no physical form. I do not know if it is even sentient.”
The trio went quiet in contemplation. None of them had any knowledge that would provide answers to these strange events.
“So, some shred of Mephiles is trying to kill me.” Shadow affirmed.
“Or trying to kill our baby.” Sonic continued, giving voice to Shadow and Sonic’s greatest fear.
“That won’t happen.” Shadow fiercely returned. “Mephiles could kill me and our baby would be fine. It’s been protected all this time, and I’m late enough in my pregnancy that he could survive an emergency C-Section. No matter what, he’ll be okay.”
“Please, don’t say things like that.” Sonic begged his lover, “Don’t talk like that. Nobody is going to die. We’ll figure this out, and you’ll have our baby, and we’ll be happy together, all three of us.”

The final blow came the next night while Shadow was sleeping with Sonic wide awake and at his bedside. He kept his hands on Shadow, always touching him to reassure himself of his safety, as he opened up his senses to alert him to anything strange present.
There was a shimmer in the air, a fluctuation in the natural flow of Chaos Energy. The presence was so weak it was clear it was on its last legs. Sonic prodded at it tentatively, and he was plunged into a memory of a timeline that had never happened.
