"description": "Originally submitted to DeviantArt on November 28, 2017. DeviantArt description below:\n\n[q]WARNING: This story contains mild language and mild violence. I personally don't think it's bad enough to warrant a \"moderate\" Mature Content rating, but I'm erring on the side of caution and marked it as such.\n\n>>NOTE: This story contains very mild spoilers for both the Dreamkeepers Graphic Novel Saga and Prelude. In order to properly understand the story, it is highly recommended that you read all the publicly released pages of the GNS and at least the \"Flight Plan\" Arc of Prelude.\n\n>The rest of this description counts as a spoiler for the story itself, specifically its main \"plot twist.\" I recommend that you read the story first before reading the rest of the description below. Just know that the story is about Vanth and read on from there.\n\nPremise: Long after Vanth had given up her dream of flying, she is suddenly given the opportunity to make her dream come true. This story takes place sometime after Volume 4, the setting being near the Troika base depicted in Volumes 3 and 4.\n\nNote that the following assumptions were made for this story: Vanth will join the kids, Vanth and Whip will both be present at the Troika base, Whip will have awakened his Power, Whip's Power is telekinesis, Whip's Power is strong enough to fly both himself and Vanth around for an extended amount of time while undergoing various maneuvers.\n\nThis was a leftover idea from when I was writing for the Halloween Contest, but its lack of anything remotely Halloween related put it at the bottom of the list for potential entries.\n\nIn truth, I had this idea in my head for a while before I even considered entering the contest. This idea was sparked by a combination of Vanth's Prelude Arc and some old Dreamkeepers art that depicted Whip's Power as a form of telekinesis. Based on what I saw, it seems that Whip's ability to float around was a low-level use of his Power and that once he fully awakened it he would be able to move around other objects beyond himself (in the art that depicted this, Whip was using his telekinesis to throw rocks at an early Tendril/Big Red concept). Right now, the website lists Whip's Power as \"autokinesis\" or merely the ability to make himself and only himself fly around. Considering how he is able to do that without a halo, it seems odd that autokinesis is all he can do. What happens when he fully awakens his Power? He can fly himself around a bit faster? I'm going to bet that the \"autokinesis\" label is just a trick and that he will gain telekinesis once his Power is awakened. Regardless of what I think, the concept of Whip being able to fly stuff around got me thinking--what if he could make other Dreamkeepers fly around? I know there is a certain Dreamkeeper who would be interested in that idea...\n\nAnd now I ship them.\n\nI mean, they are both physically handicapped individuals--neither have actual hands with opposable thumbs, Vanth can't fly despite having wings while Whip uses his Power to fly and make up for his diminutive size, Whip can't speak normally while it is implied that Vanth has a wonderful signing voice... It isn't that there are a lot of \"similarities\" per say, but rather that they just seem to fit together.\n\nCome on, it'd be cute! =3\n\nAnyways...\n\nSo I wrote this one up very quickly, with little revision. I wanted the idea out of my head, but I also didn't want to spend too much time on it. I have both Dreamkeepers and original ideas that I wanted to focus on instead, but I couldn't move on to them without putting this Vanth/Whip concept into words.\n\nIn a side note, if Dave has already addressed the whole autokinesis vs telekinesis thing somewhere outside of the comics and information available on the official website, forgive my ignorance and please post a link to the source. I always have this feeling that I'm going to say or theorize something related to Dreamkeepers that has already been dealt with and put to bed.\n\nFinal note: Hopefully no one else has already come up with this idea... That'd be embarrassing...\n\nDISCLAIMER: The characters and setting are copyright Dave & Liz Lillie. I only own the story concept depicted in this submission. If someone else has already come up with the concept depicted in this submission, or something similar, the similarities are a complete coincidence; I did not intend to steal anyone else's work or ideas.[/q]\n\nDreamkeepers is owned by @Dreamkeepers.",

"writing": "\"Flight''\n\nIt was a novel feeling - this fear of heights.\n\nHow many times had she stood at a precipice just like this one, body vibrating out of excitement, out of breathless anticipation?\n\nWhy does her body now quake in trepidation, how could she hesitate when her dream is now within her grasp, especially after having abandoned it so long ago?\n\nOh, right - the ground.\n\nShe had never paid it much mind, except to scoff at the onlookers - concerned and otherwise - who simply refused to believe.\n\nHer mind was always on what stretched before and above her, rather than what lay below - the vast, ever-changing sea of air that filled her childhood daydreams, unceasingly beckoning her with its promise of ultimate freedom.\n\nThose dreams died a long time ago, along with many other things that used to fill her days with hope.\n\nReality was a cold-hearted bitch and it had a malicious tendency to dangle those hopes just out of reach, eventually allowing you to hold them for just a brief moment before cruelly tearing them away and leaving behind a wound that would fester for years until it scabbed over and scarred you for the rest of your days.\n\nUgh, that was cringey as all hell.\n\nWorse, it was a delaying tactic.\n\nShe was... just afraid that reality was pulling another nasty prank on her.\n\nIt did come in a ridiculous little package after all.\n\nAfter all that had happened the past few days, it just seemed so preposterous.\n\nIn the middle of what looks to be the war to end all wars, the very struggle for existence itself, fate decides that her dream gets to come true?\n\nBull.\n\nA sudden gust of wind buffeted her lonely form, cutting through her jacket and adding another layer of shivering upon her anxiety-induced tremors.\n\nWrapping her arms around herself, she once again peered over the rocky edge, a sheer drop of well over a hundred feet greeting her.\n\nShe pulled back and forced her eyes to glare at the horizon, bright blue splotched with puffy white stretching over a sea of sandy rock.\n\nIf you truly believed that it wouldn't work, you wouldn't be here right now.\n\nYes, that much was true.\n\nWhy else would she be up here, freezing her ears off while beneath the vast canopy while everyone else was warm and most definitely not in any danger of falling to their death \n\nFocus.\n\nBelieve that it will work.\n\nBelieve that you will fly.\n\nHer eyes narrowed, blocking out everything else but the sky.\n\nThe tremors ceased.\n\nSlowly, she unfolded her arms and extended them out to either side, unfurling the fleshy membranes as she stretched out her fingers.\n\nOne...\n\nHer clawed feet dug into the dust, muscles tensing.\n\nTwo...\n\nShe fixed the view of the horizon in her mind, just in case - if it all went south, she wanted it to be the last thing she ever saw.\n\nTHREE!\n\nShe leapt.\n\nFor a single second, time stopped.\n\nHer body floated, weightless, suspended in the air just past the edge, nothing but space below and blue sky above.\n\nThen reality kicked in.\n\nTime resumed its pace with a sudden jerk as gravity wrenched her from the air.\n\nThe horizon she had tried to burn into her eyes was snatched away and replaced by the ground, flying upwards to meet her.\n\nShe opened her mouth to scream, but the wind stole it away.\n\nThis was it.\n\nI'm going to die.\n\nFunny how she sounded so much calmer in her head - she must look quite the sight right now, mouth comically agape in a wordless scream, falling like the doofus she was.\n\nHa.\n\nAt least her last thought would be a laugh, even if her last sight would be the ground rushing up to smash her face in.\n\nBut that wasn't what reality had in mind for today.\n\nThe membranes of her wings suddenly bulged as something caught in them.\n\nPanicking, she quickly adjusted their angle and began to flap frantically.\n\nHer vision began to rise, slowly, bit by bit - \n\nWhat was initially a gradual change in perspective abruptly morphed into a jerking cut upwards, blue and white filling her sight.\n\nHer mind blanked, failing to comprehend.\n\nShe felt her body shift, its steep upward climb leveling out until she beheld the horizon once again.\n\nShe drifted for a moment, her face still stuck in the silent scream.\n\nPassively, her facial muscles relaxed into a look just as blank as her mind.\n\nThe air whistled as she glided in silence.\n\n``Pfft.''\n\nHer cheeks bulged.\n\n``Ppbbt - ha.''\n\nShe didn't know why she was holding it back.\n\n``Pppbbbtt - pfft - ha - snrk - ``\n\nBecause it worked.\n\n``Pfft - hahahahahahaHAHAHA!''\n\nSpiritsshewasfeckingflying!!!\n\n``I'M FLYING!!!''\n\nShe screamed at the horizon in pure, unfettered, childlike joy.\n\nHarmony, are you seeing this? Can you believe it? I did it. I'm really flying!\n\nShe hoped with all her heart that, somewhere, Harmony was smiling.\n\nSeized by a reckless spirit, she folded back her wings and dived down into a shallow canyon, the walls launching upwards and throwing her into shadow.\n\nShe pulled up at the last second, clawed toes skimming the sandy bottom.\n\nAs the craggy rock raced by on either side, she imagined that she was being pursued by hostile flyers - Dark DKs with glowing halos and ugly, monstrous Nightmares with snarling maws and grasping claws.\n\nRight!\n\nShe glided to the right, imaginary orbs of purple energy whizzing through the empty space she left behind, blowing apart the canyon floor and sending smoking splinters of stone spiraling through the air.\n\nA Dark DK bearing an automatic springer anticipated her dodge and launched a volley of bullets - but she was too fast for him!\n\nShe did a barrel roll and returned to the left, the projectiles just barely missing her.\n\nHer mouth stretched into a grin - the tards didn't know what they were dealing with!\n\nDarting back and worth, she dodged every bullet and every burst of energy by the skin of her teeth.\n\nSuddenly, the end of the canyon loomed before her, ending in a sheer rock face.\n\nThere!\n\nNestled in its shadow lay the entrance to the enemy base, a dark hole leading to a vast tunnel network the Nightmares were using to stage their attacks.\n\nIt was disturbingly close to HQ - it's only a matter of time before they would be discovered.\n\nThe only surface entrance - the one ahead - was too well-defended for a ground assault and they had no means to breach their tunnel network from underground.\n\nIronically, the only viable means of attack was by air - but they had too few flyers to mount a strike capable of destroying the entire complex.\n\nThey had only one chance - an experimental explosive compound developed by Scinter himself, a bomb that had to be delivered straight into the tunnel entrance, where it would destabilize the network's central hub. The primary tunnels would collapse, killing or trapping most of the enemy forces underground, delaying them long enough for a more permanent solution to be found.\n\nThe plan - a single flyer would infiltrate their defenses and deliver the payload.\n\nThey would need the very best.\n\nAnd it was me!\n\nGreen bolts of lightning whizzed out from the cave entrance, not caring if they hit their allies behind her.\n\nThey were clearly desperate to stop her.\n\nGood - it meant that they were scared.\n\nShe twisted and turned, ducked and rolled, flying nimbly between the green streaks from ahead and the mixture of purple blobs and bullets from behind.\n\nAlmost there...\n\nShe rose up a tad, and then snapped her wings closed, dropping like a stone.\n\nDuring the brief moment of freefall, she hooked her right claw beneath her and loosened the bomb, the device beginning to snap free from the specially-designed harness.\n\nShe re-extended her wings before she splattered herself across the canyon floor... and summoned her Power.\n\nA sterling silver - no, wait - an awesomely dark purple halo materialized above her head as she focused a maelstrom of pitch-black energy swirled around the bomb, cradling it, preparing for launch.\n\nThe rock face rose before her, the black entrance much smaller than it looked before; she had to be perfectly precise, or the weapon would just impact on the surface.\n\nAlmost... there...\n\nShe could make out the freakish shadows of the Nightmares responsible for the green bursts of energy, trying to shoot her down...\n\nClose enough!\n\nWith all her might, she projected the dark mass of energy forward, launching the bomb with it, streaking forward as a black orb that sucked all the nearby light with it.\n\nShe jerked herself upward to a near-vertical climb, smirking as her less-agile pursuers slammed into the wall with dual cracks.\n\nShe kept climbing and climbing, eager to escape the blast zone.\n\nHopefully she'll make - \n\nBOOM!!!\n\nShe didn't just hear it - she felt it, a vast shockwave roaring upwards as the cavern entrance disintegrated and collapsed in upon itself.\n\nI did it!\n\nShe broke her vertical momentum with a few celebratory loop-de-loops before leveling out.\n\nMeanwhile, imaginary voices in her imaginary ear piece hooted and hollered, a single voice finally breaking through to congratulate her on a job well-done.\n\nThank you, sir, but it was nothing, really. Just doin' my job.\n\nShe beamed at the horizon, contentedly coasting on an air current.\n\nShe glided like that for a few minutes, before her smile began to fade.\n\nIt was fun while it lasted.\n\nBut reality was a bitch.\n\nBecause this wasn't true flight, not really.\n\nShe would never fly like a true flyer.\n\nNot like Harmony.\n\nBut this was close enough.\n\nA single tear gathered at the edge of her eye, the wind eventually grabbing hold and streaking it across the side of her face.\n\nShe reached up a claw to wipe away the moisture, no longer holding up the pretense of catching the air with her wings.\n\nBut...\n\nShe smirked.\n\n...there were a few things she could do with this kind of flight that no true flyer ever could.\n\nAdopting a visage of feigned boredom, she twisted around, folding her wings behind her head while crossing her legs.\n\nLooking like she was flying backwards through the air on an invisible magic lawn chair, she regarded her companion with a look that said is that the best you got?\n\nWhip, who had been trailing her the whole time, light blue halo blending into the sky behind him, raised an eyebrow.\n\nShe maintained her posture, patiently awaiting a response.\n\nSuddenly she felt herself jerk side to side, back and forth, invisible hands gently bouncing her around in the air.\n\nShe tried desperately to maintain her composure, but she only lasted a few seconds before she broke into a fit of giggles.\n\nWhip zoomed in closer, hovering about her head, giving her a cool look.\n\n``Yengh flashki feh?''\n\nShe still couldn't understand a thing he said, but she got the gist of it.\n\n``Okay, okay, you win, just, please, stoppit!''\n\nHe halted the jiggling and twirled her around to face forward, before settling into a lazy glide next to her.\n\nShe couldn't help but extend her wings again, feeling the air flow around them, savoring the sensation.\n\nBut it had to end sooner or later.\n\nShe glanced toward Whip and noticed a slight trembling in his extremities.\n\nFrankly, it was astounding that he lasted this long - she better stop him now before he gave out and they both plummeted to an early grave.\n\n``Hey, Whip, it's time to go back. You can take us down now.''\n\nHe tried not to show his relief as he twisted them around, descending at a gentle incline.\n\nOnce they were only a few feet above ground, he slowed them to a halt, hovering for a second before dropping her off.\n\nA puff of dust jumped from the ground as she landed, her knees a bit wobbly from the experience.\n\nShe heard a quiet vzzt as Whip's halo went out. Dropping all pretense, the poor little guy flopped onto the ground, panting like he had run a marathon.\n\nShe reached down, offering a claw.\n\nGratefully, he hooked his little stubby arms around it and she shuffled her wings beneath his feet, cupping him with the membranes.\n\nShe scooped him up and raised him to her shoulder. He pulled himself off her wings and took a seat. She could hear his panting in her ear.\n\nThey started to make their way back to base, the sun now at an angle as it began descending toward the horizon.\n\nThe reality of the situation dawned on her as she imagined how angry the rest will be once they get back. Technically, they had risked exposing one of the Troika's most important installations for a bit of childish fun. It would best to come up with some kind of explanation before they got there.\n\nAs she brainstormed a number of possible of excuses, another aspect of reality caught her attention.\n\nShe jerked to a halt, nearly throwing Whip off her shoulder.\n\n``Weh shrecki!?''\n\nShe answered by silently offering her right claw to him.\n\nInstead of climbing on, he instead used it to pull himself up to a standing position. Once up, he gently hopped off her shoulder and floated in front of her, looking expectantly at her.\n\nShe stared back, hesitant.\n\nA simple ``Thank you'' wouldn't suffice. Not at all.\n\nPerhaps she could...\n\nIt would be a simple thing, really - people did it all the time, nothing to read further into.\n\nIt would just be one step above a ``Thank you''; it wouldn't mean much more than that.\n\nOh, don't fool yourself, it would definitely mean much more to him.\n\nAnd for her...\n\nFunny - she had never expected that it would happen this way.\n\nBefore fear could stop her, she leaned forward and gave him a little peck on the lips.\n\nWhip jerked back, ears, tail, and limbs splaying outward in a hilarious imitation of what it would look like if he flew headlong into a brick wall.\n\nRed eyes wide, he started to float down and to her right, oblivious to his descent.\n\nShe gently extended her wing, the little guy floating into it.\n\nThe soft impact jolted him to his senses.\n\nHe righted himself and returned to his former position, staring at her, mouth working, but nothing coming out.\n\nIt took a full minute of mental gymnastics before he made a sound.\n\n``Ih - Feh - Zesh - ``\n\nWow. It was just a little kiss, dingus. No need to have a meltdown.\n\nMaybe she should have just said ``Thank you...''\n\nHe suddenly stopped his gibberish as he adopted a look of determination.\n\n``Foof.''\n\nShe understood that one a little bit better.\n\nBefore she could open her mouth and question him as to whether that ``foof'' was directed at her, he dove forward... and planted a teeny little kiss on her lips.\n\nIt was her turn to jerk backward, wings flapping out, her cheeks burning.\n\nThat little shit.\n\nShe glared at him.\n\n``You're a brave little shit, you know that?''\n\nHe regarded her coolly, his expression clearly saying well, you started it.\n\nHe had a point.\n\nOh, hell, what had she gotten herself into?\n\nJust look at him!\n\nHe's miniscule!\n\nHe had no thumbs!\n\nHe talks like a complete tard!\n\nAnd he was probably the only Dreamkeeper in the Dreamworld truly capable of understanding her.\n\nPlus, just a few minutes ago, he had made her fly.\n\nOh, damn, that sounded a bit too sexual in her head.\n\nYou get what I mean!\n\nGreat, now she was mentally shouting at herself.\n\nShe sighed, lowering her wings.\n\nWhip remained where he was, his cool countenance melting into one of apprehension.\n\nFrowning at the ground, she began to walk toward the Troika base.\n\nAs she neared him, he tensed up, as if expecting her to swat him out of the air.\n\nInstead, she passed him by without a glance.\n\nHe stared after her wearing a befuddled expression.\n\n``Yo, Whip, hurry up; sun's setting.''\n\nHe started at the sound of her voice, dropping a few inches.\n\nGathering himself, he tentatively flew forward and settled into a hover alongside her, just out of swatting range.\n\nA minute of silence passed before she spoke again.\n\n``Um, y'know, if you're tired, you can ride on my shoulder like before, if you want.''\n\nAfter a moment, she felt a light weight settle on her shoulder.\n\nShe breathed a sigh of relief.\n\nLet's see where this goes.\n\nVanth didn't turn to look, but she couldn't stop a small smile from alighting on her face.\n\n",
