He was debating with leaving the loot behind and come back later when the coast is clear but risking the bandits or scavengers picking it up or keep going and increase the chances getting caught by the bandits. Half-way on the path, he was starting to have second thoughts on his decision to carry all that loot, but it was too late as he slipped on a rock.
