"writing": "\nMountain Getaway Massacre\nChapter 3: Dropped Signal\nBy XP Author\n\nDrake held up a small plastic box. \"Is this it?\"\n\nVal looked over at the wolf. \"No, sweetie, that's a modem.\"\n\n\"Oh...\" He put it back into the box and continued looking. The two were going through plastic bins full of random things that Val had pulled out of storage. \"Never seen one like that.\"\n\nThe older leopard smirked a little. \"I'm not surprised. It's a dial up modem.\"\n\nDrake blinked. \"Dial up? I didn't think these things still existed. Does it even work?\"\n\nShe shrugged. \"I don't know. It's probably a good 15 years old now. I think Will bought it, but we found out how expensive trying to get phone lines run up the mountain was, and just tossed it into a box and never used it, so it's been sitting in there since about 2000.\" Her husband had acquired the resort back in 1998 as a business investment, and so he and Val, newly weds at the time, had a place to stay when hiking that wasn't an RV. The business had paid off, but lacking a phone line had never been much of an issue. At least until today...\n\nThough a landline would have been nice, what the two were looking for was something to boost the cellphone signal out of the place. They were far enough up the mountain that there was zero coverage. \"What we're looking for has kind of a big antenna. I don't know why Will never installed it already.\"\n\nThe two looked up from their work as they heard a gentle knock on the open door. Lily stood in the doorway, her boyfriend Jayden beside her. The two foxes did nothing to hide their apprehensiveness. Lily asked. \"Did... you find anything yet?\"\n\nVal shook her head. \"No, I'm sorry, honey, we haven't found it yet.\" She went back to looking through the bins, wondering why they even had Christmas decorations. \"Did you find any clues?\"\n\nJayden spoke up. \"Not a thing. No footprints, no ditched weapon, nothing.\" Everyone had done a sweep of the resort after they found Drake's girlfriend. They were all almost thankful no one found the killer. Everyone except Drake. After coming out of his shock, he had been pissed, and ready to attack whatever psycho was responsible for killing his girlfriend. Jayden and Lily had continued looking around, to see if they could find any clues while Drake and Val looked for the signal booster.\n\nDrake grumbled. \"Motherfucker is too scared to show his face. If I find whoever did this, I swear, I'm going to be the shit out of them and break their godsdamned fucking face.\"\n\nVal called out. \"Hey! That's it!\"\n\nThe wolf blinked, looking at the object he had picked up and was about to swing like a baseball bat. \"Oh... this is it?\" To him, it looked like a metal rod with a bunch of smaller rods sticking out seemingly at random. \"Found this like an hour ago. I thought this was something to hang decorations off of...\"\n\nEveryone stared at the meat head wolf for a moment. It was Lily that voiced what everyone else was thinking. \"You're a fucking idiot.\"\n\n\"Hey, fuck you, bitch! I didn't know what it looked like!\"\n\nShe frowned at him. \"And you didn't think to ask either, did you?\"\n\nVal spoke up before this escalated any further. \"Alright, now. That's enough! We found the signal booster, that's all that matters.\" She looked back at Drake. \"Still know what box it was in? Should have the parts to install it.\"\n\n\"Oh, yeah.\" He set the thing back down in the bin he had picked it up out of, then hefted the whole thing. \"Here.\"\n\nVal took it and looked inside. Sure enough, there were all kinds of parts to attach it to the roof and hook it up to the power. It even had instructions. \"Good. Alright. I'll head up to the roof and get this hooked up. Hopefully Will should be back soon with your two friends and we can get a call out to the rangers and get a helicopter or something. Either way, we are leaving by sunrise tomorrow.\" The older leopard put the lid back on the plastic bin and tucked the whole thing under her arm. \"Now you all stay close together. Don't go wandering off all on your own. We don't know if this person is still around.\"\n\nIt was Jayden's turn to speak up. \"What about you? Do you want someone to help you on the roof?\"\n\nShe shook her head. \"No, but thank you. I don't want to put you kids in any more danger than you're already in. Besides.\" She flexed her free arm a little. \"I'm not wall flower.\" Despite being in her early 40's, the woman was still fairly well built. Not exactly a bodybuilder, but being a regular mountain hiker, she was stocky and hearty. \"There's a wrench in my tool kit, so if someone tries to do something, I'll just clock'em with it!\"\n\nDrake started to step over the various bins and boxes that had gotten strewn about the large storage room. \"Uh... should I start putting some of this stuff away?\"\n\nVal shook her head again. \"No. I want all of you to stay together in the main lobby. It's very open, so it'll make it pretty hard for someone to sneak up on anyone. Especially if you all stay together. And if Will comes back with your friends while I'm still on the roof, you can fill him in.\"\n\n\"Yeah... probably a good idea...\" The wolf continued to make his way over and around the boxes. \"Go ahead, I'll be out in a second.\"\n\nThe leopard nodded. \"Alright. You all stay together. I'll be back as soon as I get this thing hooked up.\" With that, she made her way out of the room. She would head first to the shack to get the tall ladder so she could get to the roof. If she was lucky, installing this thing wouldn't be too difficult.\n\n* * *\n\nVal didn't feel very lucky. The instructions to hook the signal booster device up was far more complicated than she had expected. Not helped by the fact it was getting pretty dark, the sun having crested behind the mountains in the distance. Pretty as she normally found the red sky of dusk, it felt more ominous right now. It wasn't long before the sky had darkened. Val kept looking out at the trail to see if she could spot Will coming back, she hoped with Willow and Alex in tow. She just hoped that whoever had done such a horrible thing to the rabbit hadn't found them all first. She did her best to push her worries and fears aside and focus on the task at hand.\n\nShe had gotten the device fixed into place, and was now trying to figure out how to hook it up to the power. Of course it wasn't as simple as just plugging it into an extension cord. The thing had to be hooked up directly. \"I can see why he didn't hook this thing up now.\" She sighed and set the instructions back down, pulling out a heavy flashlight from the toolbox she had lugged up here. She clicked it on and shone the light on the electrical box she had opened. \"Alright. Just gotta hook this part into-\"\n\nShe froze as she suddenly got the feeling she wasn't alone. She turned to point the flashlight at the top of the ladder, still leaning against the building. No one was there, and there was no way someone could have climbed it without her hearing them. She stood and started to look around the roof. \"Hello? Is that one of you kids? This isn't the time for pranks...\" Being a cat, she had pretty good vision in the dark, but she didn't see anything. The roof was just as empty as when she first got up here. \"Must just be my nerves...\" She still took a moment to look around again.\n\nSomething moved at the corner of her vision and she quickly turned, pointing the flashlight like a gun in the direction. Nothing. She was really starting to freak out a little. The feeling of someone else being here hadn't gone away. Something moved again, and she turned, only to find herself looking at an empty patch of roof. \"Who is up here!? I promise I won't go as easy as that poor girl in the cupboard!\"\n\nShe heard something she never expected to hear. A response, in the form of a chuckle. Dark, sinister, and very wrong. It was like someone was playing a recording of a chuckle, muffled through water. The voice that spoke was just as unnatural, deep but thick and oily. \"Are you so sure?\" She spun around, pointing the flashlight all over, but she could see nothing. The voice sounded like it wasn't coming from anywhere. \n\nSteeling herself, she let out a low growl. With a quick step to the side, she shot her foot out and kicked the top of the ladder, sending it clattering to the ground. \"Alright, you sonovabitch, I've got you trapped up here now! So show yourself already!\"\n\n\"Brave. But your fear... it is so... delectable.\" Something moved again, and she swung the flashlight towards it again. This time, she could swear she saw something for a brief moment. It was almost a figure, but it was gone just as soon as she had seen it.\n\n\"Stop hiding you-\" She grunted as something suddenly struck her hand. Something hard and cold, but not metal. It hit her hard enough that it felt like it nearly broke her wrist, and it forced her to drop the flashlight. The thing clattered to the ground and spun slightly, rolling away.\n\nShe responded by swinging her other hand where she thought the person was, but hit only air. \"Stop playing games, you sick bastard!\" She looked around frantically, then looked down for the flashlight. It was rolling to the edge of the roof. \"Shit!\" She made a move to try and grab it, but the thing suddenly launched upwards and over the edge, as if someone kicked it.\n\nThe dark chuckle echoed around her again. \"No more light.\"\n\nShe swore under her breath, backing away from the edge of the roof. Jumping off to get away wasn't an option. It was a three story drop onto hard rock. Even if she could survive the fall, she'd definitely shatter her legs and probably other bones in the process. She started turning around and looking everywhere around her. She kept her hands up, ready to fight off whoever this person was. \"Alright then! C'mon!\"\n\n\"As you wish. But not like that.\" Before Val could speak, something seemed to strike at her very mind. Not physically, but something gripped her consciousness like a hand of ice and squeezed. She felt cold and numb and dizzy all at once. She couldn't speak, or even think. It felt like she was half-dreaming. Some part of her tried to push against the numbness, but was like her thoughts were swimming in honey, slow and sticky and sluggish. It was almost comforting.\n\nJust as quickly as the numbness had gripped her, it was gone, and she was fully aware once more. She was suddenly much colder than before. She was still on the roof, exactly where she had been. With a sudden shock, she realized she was completely naked, her clothes having vanished off of her. She fought the instinct to cover herself, instead keeping her hands up defensively. Whoever this person was could look at her tits as much as they liked. She would make sure they paid for it with a broken nose.\n\nThe killer watched her, drinking deep of her panic. In truth, they had no care for her physical form. It was not that they thought her stocky, buff, and busty form was somehow disgusting. They simply had no sexual attraction to anyone. They were there not for something so simple. It was the emotions. The fear. And finding one's self suddenly stark naked with a killer inches away made people very, very afraid.\n\nShe called out as she continued to slowly turn in place, looking all around as she fought her growing panic. \"Stop with the fucking mind games and show yourself, you asshole!\"\n\n\"Are you sure?\" She gasped as the voice was directly behind her. She spun around, stumbling back several steps. No one was there, but she swung at the air anyway. \"You won't like what you see.\"\n\nShe scoffed. \"I already don't like you!\"\n\n\"Good. Hate tastes as good as fear.\"\n\nShe grimaced. \"Tastes? What kind of sick fucker are y-\" Her words caught in her throat as she turned, and found herself staring directly at some...thing! Vaguely shaped like a person, but the edges were blurry and fuzzy, almost like it was a corrupted VHS. But there were no features at all. Yet she could tell there was an intelligence there, a malevolent presence that was staring directly into her soul without eyes.\n\nThe thing let out the dark chuckle again. \"Boo.\" Before she could try and attack, it moved. Impossibly fast. Something moved so quickly in front of her, she might have missed it if she had blinked. And suddenly the numbness was back... but different. Her body felt suddenly hot and ice cold, light and heavy at the same time. She tasted something metallic in the back of her throat. Her eyes went wide as she realized it was blood. She tried to reach up, but her arms refused to obey her. She tried to move, but her legs were similarly disobedient. The world suddenly started to tilt strangely as she got lightheaded.\n\nThe killer watched as her head tilted back and fell away from the rest of her body, her neck cut clean through. They could taste that panic as the realization struck, drinking deep again. The fear of someone knowing they were already dead, but alive long enough to realize it... there was nothing like it. As her head fell away, it struck the edge of the roof, bounced once, then rolled off the edge and tumbled away to the ground below. Her body was a little more animated, shivers running all through the stocky corpse. Her heavy tits wobbled and shook as her legs trembled, the muscles unsure what to do with no signal from her brain. Blood was spurting from the stump, drooling down those wobbling tits, her shaking arms, and plump belly.\n\nGravity finally claimed the trembling body, and it slumped forward, landing with a splat on the roof as her neck continued to spurt and spray her blood, her heart beating wildly in a futile attempt to keep everything going. The trembles and shakes continued, even growing more wild for a few seconds before slowly dying down. It was not long for her heart to finally give up trying, not enough blood left to keep it going. Though the muscles continued to twitch at random, her tail flicking slightly, her ass clenching for a moment, her legs giving a random kick or two.\n\nThe killer did like seeing the show, but this was a display not for them. With a hard push, they shoved the body over the edge of the roof. They just hoped the right audience was watching now.\n\n* * *\n\nLily moved to the front door in a hurry. \"I swear I heard Val yelling!\"\n\nHer wrist was grabbed by Jayden. \"Hey, c'mon! She said to stay inside! We shouldn't-\"\n\nHis girlfriend yanked her hand away. \"She could be in trouble!\" She started for the door again. Before she could reach for it, Drake was in front of her.\n\nShe was about to yell at the wolf to get out of her way, but he didn't block the door. Instead, he opened it. \"I'm going, too.\" He looked at Jayden. \"C'mon, man. You going to just let me watch your girl, are are you coming with us!?\"\n\nJayden let out a heavy sigh. \"Fine! But we stick togeth- LILY!\" The moment he had said fine, she was out the door, rushing around the side of the resort. The fox shook his head, following Drake outside to follow Lily.\n\nLily looked around, hearing the boys following behind her. She rounded the corner and saw the ladder Val had used to get to the roof. It was on the ground. \"What? Did Val already finish wi-\" She jumped as something hit the ground with a wet thud just a bit away, sounding like a wet coconut falling off the roof.\n\nJayden caught up. \"What the hell was that?\"\n\nLily shook her head. \"I don't know. It-\"\n\n\"LOOK OUT!\" Drake shouted, grabbing the wrist of both foxes and yanking them back, just in time to avoid getting hit by something big falling off of the roof. It hit the ground with another wet thud.\n\nJayden grunted. \"What the fuck was th- tha...\" Drake's grip tightened on both of their wrists as they all saw what it was. The headless, naked body of Val lay on the ground in front of them, blood still drooling out of the severed neck.\n\nAfter a moment of silence, Lily let out a shriek of horror. And the killer got their answer.\n\n* * *",

The two were going through plastic bins full of random things that Val had pulled out of storage. &quot;Never seen one like that.&quot;<br /><br />The older leopard smirked a little. &quot;I&#039;m not surprised. It&#039;s a dial up modem.&quot;<br /><br />Drake blinked. &quot;Dial up? I didn&#039;t think these things still existed. Does it even work?&quot;<br /><br />She shrugged. &quot;I don&#039;t know. It&#039;s probably a good 15 years old now. I think Will bought it, but we found out how expensive trying to get phone lines run up the mountain was, and just tossed it into a box and never used it, so it&#039;s been sitting in there since about 2000.&quot; Her husband had acquired the resort back in 1998 as a business investment, and so he and Val, newly weds at the time, had a place to stay when hiking that wasn&#039;t an RV. The business had paid off, but lacking a phone line had never been much of an issue. At least until today...<br /><br />Though a landline would have been nice, what the two were looking for was something to boost the cellphone signal out of the place. They were far enough up the mountain that there was zero coverage. &quot; What we&#039;re looking for has kind of a big antenna. I don&#039;t know why Will never installed it already.&quot;<br /><br />The two looked up from their work as they heard a gentle knock on the open door. Lily stood in the doorway, her boyfriend Jayden beside her. The two foxes did nothing to hide their apprehensiveness. Lily asked. &quot;Did... you find anything yet?&quot;<br /><br />Val shook her head. &quot; No, I&#039;m sorry, honey, we haven&#039;t found it yet.&quot; She went back to looking through the bins, wondering why they even had Christmas decorations. &quot;Did you find any clues?&quot;<br /><br />Jayden spoke up. &quot; Not a thing. No footprints, no ditched weapon, nothing.&quot; Everyone had done a sweep of the resort after they found Drake&#039;s girlfriend. They were all almost thankful no one found the killer. Everyone except Drake. After coming out of his shock, he had been pissed, and ready to attack whatever psycho was responsible for killing his girlfriend. Jayden and Lily had continued looking around, to see if they could find any clues while Drake and Val looked for the signal booster.<br /><br />Drake grumbled. &quot;Motherfucker is too scared to show his face. If I find whoever did this, I swear, I&#039;m going to be the shit out of them and break their godsdamned fucking face.&quot;<br /><br />Val called out. &quot;Hey! That&#039;s it!&quot;<br /><br />The wolf blinked, looking at the object he had picked up and was about to swing like a baseball bat. &quot;Oh... this is it?&quot; To him, it looked like a metal rod with a bunch of smaller rods sticking out seemingly at random. &quot;Found this like an hour ago. I thought this was something to hang decorations off of...&quot;<br /><br />Everyone stared at the meat head wolf for a moment. It was Lily that voiced what everyone else was thinking. &quot;You&#039;re a fucking idiot.&quot;<br /><br />&quot;Hey, fuck you, bitch! I didn&#039;t know what it looked like!&quot;<br /><br />She frowned at him. &quot; And you didn&#039;t think to ask either, did you?&quot;<br /><br />Val spoke up before this escalated any further. &quot;Alright, now. That&#039;s enough! We found the signal booster, that&#039;s all that matters.&quot; She looked back at Drake. &quot;Still know what box it was in? Should have the parts to install it.&quot;<br /><br />&quot;Oh, yeah.&quot; He set the thing back down in the bin he had picked it up out of, then hefted the whole thing. &quot; Here.&quot;<br /><br />Val took it and looked inside. Sure enough, there were all kinds of parts to attach it to the roof and hook it up to the power. It even had instructions. &quot;Good. Alright. I&#039;ll head up to the roof and get this hooked up. Hopefully Will should be back soon with your two friends and we can get a call out to the rangers and get a helicopter or something. Either way, we are leaving by sunrise tomorrow.&quot; The older leopard put the lid back on the plastic bin and tucked the whole thing under her arm. &quot; Now you all stay close together. Don&#039;t go wandering off all on your own. We don&#039;t know if this person is still around.&quot;<br /><br />It was Jayden&#039;s turn to speak up. &quot; What about you? Do you want someone to help you on the roof?&quot;<br /><br />She shook her head. &quot; No, but thank you. I don&#039;t want to put you kids in any more danger than you&#039;re already in. Besides.&quot; She flexed her free arm a little. &quot;I&#039;m not wall flower.&quot; Despite being in her early 40&#039;s, the woman was still fairly well built. Not exactly a bodybuilder, but being a regular mountain hiker, she was stocky and hearty. &quot;There&#039;s a wrench in my tool kit, so if someone tries to do something, I&#039;ll just clock&#039;em with it!&quot;<br /><br />Drake started to step over the various bins and boxes that had gotten strewn about the large storage room. &quot;Uh... should I start putting some of this stuff away?&quot;<br /><br />Val shook her head again. &quot; No. I want all of you to stay together in the main lobby. It&#039;s very open, so it&#039;ll make it pretty hard for someone to sneak up on anyone. Especially if you all stay together. And if Will comes back with your friends while I&#039;m still on the roof, you can fill him in.&quot;<br /><br />&quot;Yeah... probably a good idea...&quot; The wolf continued to make his way over and around the boxes. &quot;Go ahead, I&#039;ll be out in a second.&quot;<br /><br />The leopard nodded. &quot;Alright. You all stay together. I&#039;ll be back as soon as I get this thing hooked up.&quot; With that, she made her way out of the room. She would head first to the shack to get the tall ladder so she could get to the roof. If she was lucky, installing this thing wouldn&#039;t be too difficult.<br /><br /><div class='align_center'>*&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; *&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; *</div><br /><br />Val didn&#039;t feel very lucky. The instructions to hook the signal booster device up was far more complicated than she had expected. Not helped by the fact it was getting pretty dark, the sun having crested behind the mountains in the distance. Pretty as she normally found the red sky of dusk, it felt more ominous right now. It wasn&#039;t long before the sky had darkened. Val kept looking out at the trail to see if she could spot Will coming back, she hoped with Willow and Alex in tow. She just hoped that whoever had done such a horrible thing to the rabbit hadn&#039;t found them all first. She did her best to push her worries and fears aside and focus on the task at hand.<br /><br />She had gotten the device fixed into place, and was now trying to figure out how to hook it up to the power. Of course it wasn&#039;t as simple as just plugging it into an extension cord. The thing had to be hooked up directly. &quot;I can see why he didn&#039;t hook this thing up now.&quot; She sighed and set the instructions back down, pulling out a heavy flashlight from the toolbox she had lugged up here. She clicked it on and shone the light on the electrical box she had opened. &quot;Alright. Just gotta hook this part into-&quot;<br /><br />She froze as she suddenly got the feeling she wasn&#039;t alone. She turned to point the flashlight at the top of the ladder, still leaning against the building. No one was there, and there was no way someone could have climbed it without her hearing them. She stood and started to look around the roof. &quot;Hello? Is that one of you kids? This isn&#039;t the time for pranks...&quot; Being a cat, she had pretty good vision in the dark, but she didn&#039;t see anything. The roof was just as empty as when she first got up here. &quot;Must just be my nerves...&quot; She still took a moment to look around again.<br /><br />Something moved at the corner of her vision and she quickly turned, pointing the flashlight like a gun in the direction. Nothing. She was really starting to freak out a little. The feeling of someone else being here hadn&#039;t gone away. Something moved again, and she turned, only to find herself looking at an empty patch of roof. &quot;Who is up here!? I promise I won&#039;t go as easy as that poor girl in the cupboard!&quot;<br /><br />She heard something she never expected to hear. A response, in the form of a chuckle. Dark, sinister, and very wrong. It was like someone was playing a recording of a chuckle, muffled through water. The voice that spoke was just as unnatural, deep but thick and oily. &quot; Are you so sure?&quot; She spun around, pointing the flashlight all over, but she could see nothing. The voice sounded like it wasn&#039;t coming from anywhere. <br /><br />Steeling herself, she let out a low growl. With a quick step to the side, she shot her foot out and kicked the top of the ladder, sending it clattering to the ground. &quot;Alright, you sonovabitch, I&#039;ve got you trapped up here now! So show yourself already!&quot;<br /><br />&quot;Brave. But your fear... it is so... delectable.&quot; Something moved again, and she swung the flashlight towards it again. This time, she could swear she saw something for a brief moment. It was almost a figure, but it was gone just as soon as she had seen it.<br /><br />&quot;Stop hiding you-&quot; She grunted as something suddenly struck her hand. Something hard and cold, but not metal. It hit her hard enough that it felt like it nearly broke her wrist, and it forced her to drop the flashlight. The thing clattered to the ground and spun slightly, rolling away.<br /><br />She responded by swinging her other hand where she thought the person was, but hit only air. &quot;Stop playing games, you sick bastard!&quot; She looked around frantically, then looked down for the flashlight. It was rolling to the edge of the roof. &quot;Shit!&quot; She made a move to try and grab it, but the thing suddenly launched upwards and over the edge, as if someone kicked it.<br /><br />The dark chuckle echoed around her again. &quot; No more light.&quot;<br /><br />She swore under her breath, backing away from the edge of the roof. Jumping off to get away wasn&#039;t an option. It was a three story drop onto hard rock. Even if she could survive the fall, she&#039;d definitely shatter her legs and probably other bones in the process. She started turning around and looking everywhere around her. She kept her hands up, ready to fight off whoever this person was. &quot;Alright then! C&#039;mon!&quot;<br /><br />&quot;As you wish.
