She had been lying stretched out on the shore of Great Bear Lake, dozing in the sunshine. The Longest Day gathering would begin any hour now, and it was her favorite time in the entire season; it meant that she and her mate, Yakone, could see their friends again. \n\nKallik lifted her head and turned to face the broad-shouldered male, standing a few paw-lengths away. She acknowledged him with a nod.\n\n“It really does. Can you believe it’s been one season already? Suka and Chulyin are growing so fast.” Kallik rumbled affectionately, and turned to look at their cubs, who were splashing around in the shallows of the bay. Near them was her best friend Lusa, the black bear; she was shaking herself with an amused snort as she was splashed by the cub’s surf. Kallik’s brother, Taqqiq, was several bear-lengths away, in deep conversation with Toklo the brown bear while sharing a fat salmon. \n\nEverything was so peaceful. Everything was right with the world.\n\n“This season’s Longest Day is going to be the best one yet,” Kallik turned back to Yakone. “Or, at least I hope it will be, if I rehearsed the speech correctly.”\n\nYakone padded closer and bumped her affectionately on the side with his nose. “Of course it will.” he rumbled. “You’re Kallik. I don’t think you’ve ever not been amazing at anything.”\n\n“Har har,” Kallik rolled her eyes slightly. Tilting her head up, the sun was hanging midway in the sky, as if refusing to move any further. “It looks like it’ll be a while though until we can actually have the ceremony,” she observed. \n\nYakone looked up at the sun as well, then back to Kallik. A mischievous glint entered his eyes. Kallik blinked at him, knowing that look all too well.\n\n“Well then... what do you say we have a little fun before the sun sets?” he murmured. \n\nKallik’s fur prickled at the thought. “Now?” She growled, mildly embarrassed. “Y-Yakone, not in front of…”\n\n“Of course not.” Yakone looked right into her eyes. Kallik could see a growing mischief behind them. “I know a part of the beach we can go. Besides... I really need this right now.” he purred. \n\nKallik huffed and rose to her paws, feeling their fur brush. Although she wouldn’t say it out loud... after traveling for miles from the ice with their cubs to the lake, she too was itching for a moment where she could be alone with her mate.\n\nKallik turned towards the lake. “Lusa?” she called. The charcoal she-bear was cleaning her paws, and pricked her ears up at Kallik’s voice. \n\nKallik jerked her head toward the forest that surrounded Great Bear Lake. “Yakone and I are going to go do a little hunting. If Taqqiq asks, just tell him we’ll be back soon.”\n\nLusa nodded in acknowledgment, and resumed her attention back to the lake and cubs.\n\nThe white bear pair set off into the forest, with Yakone leading the way. He padded along the leaf litter eagerly, and Kallik had to walk quickly to keep up. \n\nSoon the two reached a clearing. There were nothing but soft ferns growing in this part of the forest, and dense, brown tree trunks surrounded them on all sides. \n\nKallik gazed around the foliage. “Wow, I’ve never been to this part of the forest,” she whispered, as if a louder sound would stir the quiet. “It’s massive.”\n\n“That’s why it’s perfect,” Yakon murmured. \n\nKallik had no time to respond as he suddenly bowled her over. She landed with a grunt on her backside, and Yakone placed a massive paw on her chest. \n\n“I’ve been waiting to get my claws on you...” Yakone whispered. Kallik felt her fur burn and her breathing quicken as Yakone nuzzled her face. \n\nStepping directly over her, Yakone had his nose buried in Kallik’s fur, inhaling her scent deeply.
