I hope this letter finds you well. I know it hasn’t been long since we last communicated, but I felt this too important to let sit.
It concerns your brothers.
You see, last week when they visited and we all went out on the boat together, I noticed you weren’t having much fun. I had thought that getting the cete together like we used to do when y’all were kids would be a good thing, family and all. But I couldn’t help seeing your long muzzle and droopy ears. (yes, badger ears can droop, and yours were drooping) Come to find out, through a little sleuthing and just plain paying attention, they were giving you a hard time about still living with me.
First off, let me just say: so what if you get teased once in a while? I say, let ‘em bitch and moan. They don’t know you like I do. They don’t love you like I do. And that’s the way it is.
When y’all were born, your mother and I knew right away you were special. All you cubs came right on time, but you seemed short on clay, as she put it. Lord used the leftovers on you. In any case, you were the runt and you still are.
And I wouldn’t have you any other way.
You know that when they tease you or give you a hard time, son, they’re letting out their frustration and jealousy, right? Y’all’re goin’ to college in different places, and you’re the one who wanted to stay in town and go local. I kind of know why you didn’t head out with your brothers...you like spending time with me as much as I like spending time with you. And I’m glad for that. Plus, you get to work at the car wash with me so you got some walkin’ around money.
I bet they think you’re a freeloader, nursing on Daddy’s teat because you can’t handle the real world.
Okay, so maybe that was a bad choice of words. You get my point.
Thing is, they don’t know we hardly see each other at the wash. I’m in the office and you’re hard at work all day, every day. You pay me rent and pay for your own food and you even cook for me sometimes. You’re good at that. So you may be small for your age, even small for a badger, but I see those hours at the gym starting to pay off. You’ll make a fine boyfriend for someone, someday. And when that day comes, sure I’ll be sad.
Hell, I’m tearin’ up a little now. Sappy dad. See that stain at the end of the last line? Couldn’t catch it.
Well, I’ve gone on long enough. You get my drift. Don’t let those boys bring you down just because you and I got something special. I mean, y’all got my love, but you, son, needed a little bit more to make up for that thing the doctors call a “birth defect.”
You’re the runt of the litter, boy, but you’re MY runt, you hear? Hold your head up high around those brothers of yours. I got your back.
I love you and I always will. Now come down to my room and give me some sugar, huh? Got a three-day load and nowhere to put it.

I was blessed at FC this year when I saw that K-9 had put this up in the art show, after planning to in 2013 but withdrawing. I had to have it; I'd always wanted it, and now it's proudly displayed in my bedroom. Tasteful!
