The only thing that had slowed the advance of the Freedom Fighters and their allies had been the usual traps and automated defenses, but otherwise things were going swimmingly…
Then things got weird.
As they took bases closer and closer to Egg Central, there was signs of resistance and struggle, possible infighting in the Egg Army, the computer files were less scrubbed and more corrupted, a lot of recoverable files talking about something horrible, about apologies and warnings.
When the Freedom Fighters reached central, though, that’s when things went from weird to bad. Very Bad.
Egg Central maintained a barrier field, one that proved a truly rough nut to crack, but they put their best minds on it. And oh they wished they hadn’t.
It wasn’t all clear what had happened to the Egg Army, but it seemed some sort of techno-virus born from one of his newest badniks had gone rogue. It limited itself in the main base at first, infecting and controlling those it could, sending orders for more to come to it. A lot figured that near the Egg Army’s end, some poor soul managed to get the barrier up and bar the bot access, containing the problem.
Until it wasn’t contained anymore. Hordes of altered, infected and hostile Egg Army Soldiers flooded out, and the infection spread unabated.
D.O.L.L., as the rogue badnik called itself, sent out a warning, accept Assimilation or die. That was a month ago, and since then the world had gone from near victory against Eggman to scurrying and hiding from his final creation and it’s pawns.
And in that month you had gone from a resistance fighter storming an Egg Base, to facing down one of the greater heroes of the resistance, long since twisted by D.O.L.L.
“You have your choice between two hammers,” She warned, her modulated voice seeming excited at either prospective outcome, “So will you take death, or Assimilation?”
