But it also meant being at the mercy of the elements, and after more than a few of her friends had lost bits and pieces the year before, Arlene had spent the long spring and summer months thinking about it, planning and plotting. So after leaving her now Ex-boyfriend embedded in a trash can, she started scoping out targets. It hadn’t been easy, certain actions by her Ex had made cats at large rather unwelcome to anyone who worked in food service, retail, government work, plumbing…
Overall, general goodwill towards cats had dropped in the city, which made finding someone to take her in. And with the nights growing longer, colder, and the papers forecasting some record lows, Arlene was getting desperate.
And desperate times, of course, called for desperate measures.
So after a few nights watching the back alley of a night club for some floozie to leave her some supplies for her plan, dressed up and pretty, she stood in a back alley, waiting for an answer at the door she’d just knocked on.
He was the owner of a computer repair shop, not too bad looking for a human, but obviously lonely from her peeks into his apartment above the shop.
He may not understand what she was saying, but she was pretty sure he got the gist of her suggestion as he looked up and down the alleyway before stepping back and holding the door open for her to enter.
It would mean giving up some of the fun of being an alley cat, but by the time the snow was falling the following morning as she watched from under the warm bed covers, she was pretty sure it would be worth it.
