Therefore this ambitious couple is preparing exactly for such a case.
With a deep breath in their lungs and a stopwatch started on the edge, they submerge into their tub, planning to stay under as long as they can.
Of course it is a little tight despite their fairly large tub, but they surely are not minding each others touch.
Not to loose an opportunity, they quickly begin the kiss which they had previously tried outside in the dry.
Underwater it is a little trickier to find the right position and also to seal Ren's mouth against Pali's beak. Eventually it's tight enough that they realize one important aspect: When both partners have full lungs - which wouldn't be the case deep underwater due to pressure - there isn't really a way to pass anything around.
Incidentally, they need to exhale a fair bit of air to get rid of the water in their mouth or beak anyways and that helps making room.
If they are down in the sea one day, they would not be able to afford giving up that air but. Possibly they will need to learn how to swallow the water instead.
However for now they just try to make the best out of their first attempt.

Their stopwatch just beeped for the first minute when Pali decides to begin. Her chest is feeling a little tight at this point. Just the first reminders that one is supposed to breathe - and so that's what she does.
She puffs up her cheeks, building up some pressure which is the cue for Ren that he can let the air flow into his own chest.
Carefully keeping an eye on his partner, he allows the air through his windpipe. His chest, pressed against hers, expands lightly while Pali's deflates.*
"Coo..coo..."
*The cockatiel makes some soft sounds that vibrate through both their bodies before she eventually stops. Her instincts urge her to inhale again but she has to wait a brief moment for Ren's turn.

The raichu does not make her wait for long however. His lungs are full with their combined air and so are his cheeks. Building some pressure through their connection in return, Pali is the one to let it flow into her chest now. It has an almost euphoric effect on her to feel her own lungs expand once more with this very warm, yet soothing air from her partner.
A few tiny bubbles escape their connect but they make sure it stays watertight. Any entering water is promptly swallowed whilst their cheeks puff up for the brief moment the airflow is interrupted by that.
The second minute passes in no time and then the third.
By then, the two lovers reached a steady rhythm. Pali's legs are coiled tightly around his torso and her beak is almost fully surrounded by his snout, securing their connection even further.
That is certainly necessary though because as the air grows increasingly stale, their exchange of breathe involuntarily speeds up...

If they were deep underwater, this would be the latest reasonable time to truly focus on ascending or returning to an air source. Here in the apparent safety of the tub, the two partners don't feel this urgency however.
Time keeps passing and the shade on their face turns further and further away from the red of strain towards purple and blue of cyanosis, caused by lack of oxygen.
By the time the stopwatch signals the fifth minute, they have trouble to think of anything but each other and of air.
"M..mgmbgbl.. nhmgblbnl..."
Some strained, not to say desperate sounds escape both of them. Yet they keep focusing just on the next breath at a time. They know as long as their lungs move, they are conscious and can keep going.
Their eyes are glossy and pupils dilated at this point as they look faintingly yet full of passion at each other. Just a little longer.. we won't give up yet.. is what they tell themselves whilst pushing the survival instinct aside that would otherwise make them gasp water. The diminishing, stale air is all they have and they use it the best way possible.
Even when their consciousness starts to slip, their passion for this act that turned into so much more than training, is unbroken...
