"writing": "The Thursday evening sunlight filtered in through the windows of the dojo, bathing the polished wooden floor in a rich golden light. All along the densely decorated walls of the entry room the traditional was juxtaposed with the modern. Wall scrolls with foreign symbols and calligraphy framed displays of trophies, accolades and photographs. Some of the photos were faded and discolored, some much more recent. A large cork board displayed pictures of new students and an announcement for an upcoming tournament. Weapons, sparring gear and other items filled a display case topped with an assortment of brochures and a flyer for a currently running promotion. Taking in his surroundings, Tuxley was struck by the overwhelming sense of purpose of the place. The collective years of dedicated study and practice were palpable. Standing there in his brand new gi and stiffly creased belt he couldn't have felt more out of place.\n\nFor the last few weeks, after having watched The Karate Kit for the first time, Tuxley had been completely absorbed in martial arts. He had taken to running around the house, jump-kicking off of furniture and pummeling couch cushions into submission. In an effort to divert his boundless energy away from household destruction, and looking for new activities for him after moving to their new town, his mother asked if he would be interested in lessons. The little wolf was thrilled by the proposal and his excitement had only been building ever since.\n\nNow however, standing as close as he could to his mother at the reception desk, his excitement had turned to nervousness. Despite seeing other students coming and going, many dressed in the same uniform that now hung loosely on his frame, he couldn't help but feel like an imposter wearing a costume rather than one of them.\n\nLooking around nervously, the small wolf peered down the main hallway to spot a stocky brown bear padding toward them sporting all black. Despite his imposing size, the bear had a kind face and wore a welcoming smile.\n\n\"Here for our first lesson?\" He asked upon reaching them, looking first at his mother, then down to Tuxley.\n\n\"Yes,\" his mother answered.\n\n\"Awesome, so you must be Tuxley then?\" dropping to one knee and extending his large hand to Tuxley.\n\n\"Y-yes,\" Tuxley managed meekly, reaching a tentative hand out to meet the bear's.\n\nThe bear shook Tuxley's hand firmly. \"Alright, nice to meet you Tuxley, I'm Mr. Bruce. I'm going to be giving you your first lesson today, OK?\" He let go and stood back up. \"You excited?\"\n\n\"Yeah.\"\n\n\"Nervous?\"\n\n\"A...little.\" Tuxley's gaze drifted down to the floor. \n\n\"That's OK. No need to be nervous. You're going to do great. You'll have fun. I promise.\" He continued smiling warmly down at Tuxley who managed a nervous smile back. \"Here we like to meet our nerves head on with enthusiasm and intensity. So when I ask if you're ready, I want you to answer back nice and strong and loud with a 'Yes, sir!' Can you do that? Are you ready?\"\n\n\"Yes, sir!\"\n\n\"Let's try again, louder!\"\n\n\"YES, SIR!\" the little wolf bellowed up at the great bear, face turning red.\n\n\"Alright, that's what I'm looking for!\" Mr. Bruce clenched a fist enthusiastically. \"Come on back with me and we'll get started. Mom, you can come along too.\"\n\nGlancing nervously up at his mother who met his gaze with a smile and gentle nod, Tuxley followed Mr. Bruce as he led them down the hallway. They passed a seating area where a large glass window showed a class already in progress in the main training room. The bear led them further down the hallway and into a smaller practice room.\n\n\"It'll just be us today while I teach you some of the basics. Let's take your shoes and socks off and have a seat right there on the floor for just a minute and we'll get started.\"\n\nThe lesson began with the great bear sitting on the floor opposite Tuxley and explaining some of the basic principles of this style of karate. As the little wolf listened intently, his mother watched from her seat at the side of the room, proud of her son's focus and amused at the differing sizes of the giant bear teacher and tiny wolf student that sat across from one another.\n\nThey then went through the traditional bow that started every class before launched right into learning basics.\n\nOnce the main lesson started, it was a matter of seconds before the nerves vanished, replaced by intent focus as Tuxley diligently followed the instructor. Tuxley filled with pride and energy, and a hope that one day he could add to the legacy on display on the dojo's walls. All along the densely decorated walls of the entry room the traditional was juxtaposed with the modern. Wall scrolls with foreign symbols and calligraphy framed displays of trophies, accolades and photographs. Some of the photos were faded and discolored, some much more recent. A large cork board displayed pictures of new students and an announcement for an upcoming tournament. Weapons, sparring gear and other items filled a display case topped with an assortment of brochures and a flyer for a currently running promotion. Taking in his surroundings, Tuxley was struck by the overwhelming sense of purpose of the place. The collective years of dedicated study and practice were palpable. Standing there in his brand new gi and stiffly creased belt he couldn't have felt more out of place.
For the last few weeks, after having watched The Karate Kit for the first time, Tuxley had been completely absorbed in martial arts. He had taken to running around the house, jump-kicking off of furniture and pummeling couch cushions into submission. In an effort to divert his boundless energy away from household destruction, and looking for new activities for him after moving to their new town, his mother asked if he would be interested in lessons. The little wolf was thrilled by the proposal and his excitement had only been building ever since.
Now however, standing as close as he could to his mother at the reception desk, his excitement had turned to nervousness. Despite seeing other students coming and going, many dressed in the same uniform that now hung loosely on his frame, he couldn't help but feel like an imposter wearing a costume rather than one of them.
Looking around nervously, the small wolf peered down the main hallway to spot a stocky brown bear padding toward them sporting all black. Despite his imposing size, the bear had a kind face and wore a welcoming smile.
"Here for our first lesson?" He asked upon reaching them, looking first at his mother, then down to Tuxley.
"Yes," his mother answered.
"Awesome, so you must be Tuxley then?" dropping to one knee and extending his large hand to Tuxley.
"Y-yes," Tuxley managed meekly, reaching a tentative hand out to meet the bear's.
The bear shook Tuxley's hand firmly. "Alright, nice to meet you Tuxley, I'm Mr. Bruce. I'm going to be giving you your first lesson today, OK?" He let go and stood back up. "You excited?"
"Yeah."
"Nervous?"
"A...little." Tuxley's gaze drifted down to the floor.
"That's OK. No need to be nervous. You're going to do great. You'll have fun. I promise." He continued smiling warmly down at Tuxley who managed a nervous smile back. "Here we like to meet our nerves head on with enthusiasm and intensity. So when I ask if you're ready, I want you to answer back nice and strong and loud with a 'Yes, sir!' Can you do that? Are you ready?"
"Yes, sir!"
"Let's try again, louder!"
"YES, SIR!" the little wolf bellowed up at the great bear, face turning red.
"Alright, that's what I'm looking for!" Mr. Bruce clenched a fist enthusiastically. "Come on back with me and we'll get started. Mom, you can come along too."
Glancing nervously up at his mother who met his gaze with a smile and gentle nod, Tuxley followed Mr. Bruce as he led them down the hallway. They passed a seating area where a large glass window showed a class already in progress in the main training room. The bear led them further down the hallway and into a smaller practice room.
"It'll just be us today while I teach you some of the basics. Let's take your shoes and socks off and have a seat right there on the floor for just a minute and we'll get started."
