*Tobias: First Day at School*

The warm morning sun streamed through the shuttle windows as Tobias fidgeted in his seat. Today was his first day at Evergrand Primary, the school for Penitatas and other rejuvenated children. His tail flicked nervously, his thoughts racing about meeting new classmates and enduring the constant discipline that came with being a Hard Cycle Penitatas. Beside him, Martha sat confidently, her bag clutched tight, while Bruno leaned back, as relaxed as ever.

“It’s just school,” Martha said, rolling her eyes at Tobias’s nervous expression. “Stop acting like you’re being sent to the brig.”

“That’s easy for you to say,” Tobias muttered. “You’ve already been here. I’m going to be the new guy everyone stares at.”

“You’ll be fine,” Bruno said with a reassuring smile. “Everyone here’s got their own story. Trust me, you’re not the only one with baggage.”

Tobias huffed, his tail flicking anxiously as the shuttle came to a smooth stop in front of Evergrand Primary.

*Arriving at Evergrand Primary*

The school building was an impressive blend of old-world charm and futuristic design, its sleek, ivy-covered walls giving way to bright, open windows. Tobias followed the other students inside, clutching his bag tightly as chatter filled the air.

The classroom was already bustling when Tobias arrived. Students of all species filled the seats, exchanging greetings and nervous whispers. Tobias’s eyes landed on a sleek grey fox sitting near the front. Her fur shimmered slightly under the light, her posture poised, and her sharp eyes scanned the room with a quiet confidence.

“That’s Luna,” Martha whispered as they found their seats. “She’s a Volontaria. She actually volunteered for this process.”

Tobias blinked in disbelief. “Why would anyone *choose* to go through this?”

“Because she’s Luna,” Martha replied. “She’s smart, calm, and honestly a little intimidating.”

*The Teacher’s Introduction*

A tall human woman in a sharp suit entered the classroom, her commanding presence instantly silencing the chatter. She placed her bag on the desk and looked around the room with a practiced gaze.

“Good morning, class,” she began, her tone firm but not unkind. “I’m Mrs. Langford, your teacher this year. For those of you who are new, welcome to Evergrand Primary. Here, you will learn academics, discipline, and the values necessary to complete your cycles.”

Tobias shifted uncomfortably in his seat at the mention of discipline. He had been bracing for it, but hearing it said so plainly made his ears flatten.

“Today, we’ll begin with introductions,” Mrs. Langford continued. “Each of you will share your name, your rank, and a little about what brought you here. Let’s start at the front.”

---

*Class Introductions Begin*

The first student to stand was a bright-yellow bird with a chirpy voice. “Hi, I’m Kiki Goldfeather. I’m a Medico Penitatas. I used to be a pilot, but an accident meant I had to rejuvenate.”

Next, a green-scaled dragon rose nervously. “I’m Jarek. Hard Cycle Penitatas. I, uh, stole treasure. A lot of treasure.”

Then the grey fox stood. Her voice was calm and steady, carrying an air of quiet authority. “I’m Luna. I’m a Volontaria Penitatas. I chose this process because I believe in second chances and the value of growth.”

Martha leaned over to Tobias. “Told you she’s intense.”

Several more students shared their stories, including:

- Nina Swiftpaw, a red fox with a quick wit: “Soft Cycle Penitatas. I hacked into a corporate network for fun. Not my best idea.”
- Bruno Hearthstone, proud and straightforward: “I’m a Medico Penitatas. I used to be a firefighter, but an accident meant rejuvenation was my only option.”
- Martha Whispertuft, who stood confidently: “Gravitos Penitatas. I hacked into Starfleet systems while trying to access advanced tech. Didn’t know it was Starfleet, and now I’m paying for it.”

Finally, it was Tobias’s turn.

*Tobias’s Story*

Tobias stood slowly, his tail flicking nervously behind him. His ears drooped as he faced the class, unsure how much to reveal but knowing honesty was expected.

“My name is Tobias Rowe,” he began, his voice hesitant at first. “I’m a Hard Cycle Penitatas.”

He paused, glancing around the room. Martha gave him a small nod of encouragement, and he took a deep breath before continuing.

“At first, it was just small stuff—things no one would notice. A little insider trading here, a little money laundering there. But then... the stakes got higher. I started forging documents, moving huge sums of money through shell corporations, and making deals I had no right to make. It all spiraled out of control.”

His voice softened. “I didn’t think about the people I was hurting until it was too late. And by then, I’d ruined lives. That’s why I’m here.”

The room was silent for a moment, the weight of his words settling over the class. Tobias quickly sat down, his ears flattening as he avoided the gazes of his classmates. Martha leaned over and whispered, “Not bad, Rowe. You survived.”

Tobias managed a small, shaky smile.

*The First Lesson*

After introductions, Mrs. Langford addressed the class. “Discipline is a key part of the Penitatas process,” she said. “For those of you ranked as Soft or Hard Cycle Penitatas, your first lesson is a reminder of accountability.”

Tobias tensed as Mrs. Langford picked up a wooden paddle from her desk. “All Soft and Hard Cycle Penitatas, please stand and line up at the front. Pants down.”

Tobias’s face burned with humiliation as he hesitated. Martha stood confidently, as if it were just another day, while Tobias reluctantly joined them, his tail twitching nervously.

One by one, the students bent over the desk as Mrs. Langford administered three firm swats with the paddle. Tobias winced as he watched Martha barely flinch. When it was his turn, his heart pounded as he leaned over the desk, his pants lowered.

The first swat landed with a sharp *crack*, and Tobias yelped. The second stung worse, and by the third, tears pricked his eyes.

“Return to your seat,” Mrs. Langford said firmly.

Tobias pulled up his pants and shuffled back to his desk, his backside burning. Luna gave him a faint nod as he sat down, her calm presence oddly reassuring.

*Meeting New Friends*

Later in the day, Tobias found himself paired with Luna, Martha, and Nina for a group activity. As they worked together, the conversation turned to their experiences.

“So, you volunteered for this?” Tobias asked Luna, still baffled.

Luna smiled faintly. “Yes. I wanted to understand what it means to face challenges and grow. Even though I didn’t commit a crime, I believe this process has value.”

“You’re brave,” Tobias admitted. “I don’t think I could do this if I didn’t have to.”

“You’re doing fine,” Luna said simply. “We all have our paths to walk.”

Martha smirked. “Tobias has a knack for getting into trouble. That’s got to count as a talent, right?”

“Hey!” Tobias protested, though he couldn’t help but laugh.

*Looking Ahead*

By the end of the day, Tobias’s nerves had settled. Despite the stinging reminder of discipline, he felt a small sense of belonging. These kids understood what it meant to struggle and grow.

As they left the classroom together, Luna walked beside Tobias. “First days are always the hardest,” she said. “But you’ll find your place here.”

Tobias nodded, her words giving him hope. Maybe this school wouldn’t be so bad after all.
