Asuka is a canine kobold from the Far East, and Seppel is an old house kobold.\nAsuka bowed before me with the courteous flair of one used to service. Seppel answered, “How do you do?” and offered to take my things.\nQuiquan, however, folded her arms over her chest and blurted out immediately her inquiries about the state of our shared tribe.\nI assured her everything was fine over there. After such an arduous journey, I retired to the baths for a long and relaxing soak. Since I lost my instantaneous teleportation, travels have been quite time-consuming. Such is the cost of not wishing to remain still in one place.\nLuckily for me, the destination is only a tiny step of the journey, and the roads traveled are often much more exciting and filled with insight and chance encounters far more intriguing than the initial goal could ever be.\nBut I write about all of those in other pieces. Here, we are talking about my return home and my trip to my baths.\nSoaking in the warm water and surrounded by the steam in the room, I could have no other care. But, I found that I was not alone when I submerged and re-emerged, letting the water cling to my scales and knocking away all the dirt and grime.\nThe blue scales of Quiquan graced my presence as she stepped into the opposite end of the pool. Her emerald eyes fixed on me with a judgmental gaze.\n“The Queen didn’t call me back?”\nI giggled and swam close to her, our noses nearly pressing. She didn’t pull away, instead standing her ground as she kept her gaze fixed on me.\n“You haven’t learned enough yet. You still have a dislike for the sexy.”\n“I have a disdain,” she retorted, sloshing aside, “for your shenanigans!”\n“And yet, you’re the one who cuts corners. You’re the one who gets sloppy and makes mistakes, and you’re the one who pretends they are the one with the firm grip on things.” Tik Tik sloshes toward her, placing a hand behind her and another on her hip. “You lack understanding of your limitations because you are so focused on being better than me that you can’t look at your failures.”\nQuiquan blushed under my penetrating gaze and probing questions, the apprentice wizard stammering to try to respond. However, I interrupted her by gripping her chin and tilting her face to look at me. “Remember, you can become great if you admit your faults.”\n“Wha… wuh…?”\nI let go of her cheeks, slipping back and motioning her to speak.\n“What about your faults?” She snapped, crossing her hands over her chest and glowering at me.\nI sighed. “I’ve had a hectic time and a very trying time. I don’t have time for any more fighting.”\n“You avoid conflict all the time, Tik Tik,” she snapped, sloshing toward me and circling me.\n“Is that so?” I asked, standing to my full height, about waist-level in the water.\nShe followed me, stepping around me. “You may have designed some of the best traps in the tribe, but who was the one to clean and maintain them? Even now, I clean up after you. You’d think by looking at you that great genius comes from great carelessness, but that isn’t true.”\nQuiquan placed a hand square on her chest, puffing herself up and squeaking with an authority I had seen many kobolds exercise repeatedly. “I will do what I can to be a great wizard for my people and lead them to prosperity. If that means learning from a selfish lizard like you, then so be it! Even if that means you will never learn, at least I will!”\nHearing her bold proclamation, I sank back into the water, sighing and draping my arms over the edge. “You know what? You’re right. Why don’t you go and improve yourself and our people? Let me be who I am, and I’ll let you be who you are.”\nShe slipped down, following my lead. “It doesn’t mean I will agree with your decisions or the chaos you bring to your abode.”\n“You don’t have to agree with me,” I responded, splashing the water between my fingers. “You just have to learn from me and try, but fail, to surpass me.”\nShe huffed. “Such arrogance. No wonder you butted heads with the Queen so much. There’s no room for a mighty dragon to have someone who thinks she’s a dragon in her house?”\n“Someone who thinks she’s a dragon, you say?” I couldn’t help myself then. After all, it was a bit of a guilty pleasure and continues to flesh my magic in ways that would give them the most impact. So, with the magical transmutation that I had mastered over many studies, I stood up, taller than before, water dripping down my lengthening form until I loomed high over the little kobold, my body magnificent, curved, and more to the liking of many outsiders who prefer a girl their own size.\nQuiquan stared up at me with a quivering gaze, so small despite being so proud just a moment ago.\nI lifted my mighty dragon-arm, and she floated up from the air, picked up by my might and cradled in my now-pronounced chest. With a sneer and a growl, I nuzzled against her and whispered to my little apprentice, “Know that one day you shall be able to accomplish this and many other things.
