"writing": "The night shift had been quiet in the aftermath of the failed patrol. Jakub and Durin were feared lost as the stygian night overtook the village, leaving them to dwell in the light of oil lanterns and their own personal torches. Koen chewed on his lip as he looked out of one of the second-story windows, seeing a wolf in grey uniform staring back at him in disapproval. The darkness was all encompassing, it seemed, as he turned away from the window.\nThe contingent of sentries downstairs had taken to entertaining their selves as the night dragged on, their weapons close at hand should the need arise. Unteroffizier Rald was busy talking to Espen, his tone at a level low while Espen wiped at his face with a rag that looked like it had been half dipped in red.\n“Koen,” Rald said when he saw his unofficial second in command. “Anything from Jakob and Edel?”\nKoen shook his head. “I haven’t heard anything yet. Sentries are still on duty, however, so I have high hopes that they’ll return soon.”\nRald shook his head, not in disapproval but in weariness for their situation. It was, by far, no-where near as poor as the eastern front, but it was still a far cry from what he would have preferred. Having the two soldiers back was all he could have asked for, at least for now.\n“Have you organized another patrol,” Rald asked after a moment of thought, Espen having excused himself to check on Edel. “And for what time?”\n“Not yet. I thought we were better off to wait and give them a chance to return.”\n“I hope that they will, but we need to remain vigilant. I want the patrol to be ready at first light,” Rald rubbed at his cheek. “At the very least, they can look for the missing men.”\nMidnight gradually rolled over their makeshift encampment and Koen stepped out of the house, his rifle slung over a shoulder as he lit a cigarette, looking out into the seemingly solid darkness. The cherry ember burned brightly against his face as the sound of crunching snow greeted him, He turned quickly, reaching for his rifle when he saw Dietz’s own face illuminated by his own cigarette.\n“Sorry, I didn’t think I’d scare you,” Dietz said softly as he leaned against the wall next to Koen, who shifted his machinegun back over his shoulder.\n“It’s fine. Just my nerves,” Koen sighed as he took a sharp drag off of his own cig, exhaling through his nose.\nDietz nodded, looking up towards the dark, moonless sky before looking down at his cig. “Don’t suppose I can get one off of you?”\nKoen glanced at Dietz. “Don’t you have your own,” he asked as he reached for his pack anyway. “Or did you already smoke them all?”\n“I had some, but when I got up for my shift they were gone,” Dietz sighed. He reached out and took a fresh cig and lit it off of his old one. “It was probably Heller.”\nKoen nodded quietly as he looked off into the quiet night before looking up towards the sky. The moon had shifted behind thick clouds, suffocating the pale light and leaving the snow to dully reflect the lamps from the window of their fortified post. The two bristled at the sound of something… something not natural howling in the darkness. The sound seemed to come from all directions, low and bellowing as Koen shrugged his MP40 from his shoulder and held it at the ready while Dietz looked for a moment more.\n“What in the hell was that,” Koen breathed as he brought the rifle up, the wired stock pressing into the crook of his arm. “You heard that too, right?”\nDietz nodded, pulling his own MP40 around to bear. “Yeah,” he glanced upwards before looking out into the stagnant night once more, trying to quiet his breaths if only to listen for the crunching of dry snow. They waited like that for some time, the soft breath of the wind over snow contrasting the frost-labored breaths of the men. The howl spouted again, louder this time. Dietz glanced to the side just as Koen started shooting, his machinegun cackling as plumes of snow spurted into the air. Just as soon as the gunfire started, Koen pulled his finger away from the trigger, his body rigid.\n“Did you see that,” he hissed harshly, his teeth gritted. “Did you see it move?”\n“See what,” Dietz asked before the snow exploded at them, a dark figure lunging through the air. Two rattles of gunfire echoed into the night as Dietz fired with Koen, emptying their magazines into the intruder’s face, forcing it down into the snow as it bled darkly into the white powder. Koen fumbled for a fresh magazine as Dietz emptied the rest of his before repeating the same action.\nThey watched the figure as the door to the house opened, two troopers darting out with weapons drawn, Rald among them with his luger in one hand, a bright flashlight in the other.\n“What are you two shooting at,” he called, not too pleased with the fusillade of gunfire. That was when the cone of light fell across the figure in the snow, the smears and splatters of crimson. “What… what is that?”\nKoen stooped and hooked his fingers against the shoulder of the figure, pulling up and flipping it over. Heller’s bloody, frozen face greeted them, his eyes wide and clouded, almost iced over entirely. Someone swore quietly as Koen’s mouth opened and shut wordlessly.\n“We-we didn’t know,” Dietz said instead, his machinegun nearly falling from his fingers. “He… he attacked us. We didn’t know.”\nRald sighed and traced the light up towards the street, following the trail of disturbed snow that Heller left as he had moved. He glanced back at Koen and Dietz before sighing. “Someone get Espen out here,” he glanced at Koen. “Please surrender your arms, Koen. You too, Dietz.”\nKoen shook his head. “Underoffizier, you can’t possibly-”\n“That’s an order,” Rald glared at Koen. “Surrender your weapons, now.”\nDietz nodded and presented his MP40, the barrel aimed towards the sky as one of the other soldiers took it from him, Rald holstering his luger and taking Koen’s weapon before the two were led back inside and two soldiers were chosen as their replacements. Rald had no idea what he was supposed to think, really. According to the after-action report from the patrol, Heller was killed in action and his body was left behind due to enemy interdiction. How Heller’s body ended up in front of the house, let alone moving was something he couldn’t fathom.\nThe night dragged on and he stared at Heller’s body with Espen, more questions started to form. Heller had been killed in action with Edel and Cyana confirming it earlier in the day. It was plenty of time for him to freeze in this kind of weather, but what he couldn’t understand was why the ice was still clinging to his frostbitten cheeks and uniform.\nEspen looked at a loss as well, considering Heller’s state of being. Before they could consider the possibilities more gunfire erupted from the sentries that replaced Koen and Dietz. Someone screamed as he rushed for the door, Cyana and Espen hot on his heels as the other soldiers scrambled for combat. Just as Rald started to force the door open a burst of bullets snapped into the walls of the house, two punching through the door and nearly shearing into warm flesh by sheer luck.\nOne of the troopers lay on his back, blood gushing from his throat as the other soldier lay sprawled in the snow in the middle of the road, flailing and screaming wildly. Espen was immediately at the wounded soldier’s side, trying to staunch the bleeding as Rald made his way to the other soldier, the knee-high snow pulling against him as he moved. The soldier stopped thrashing for a moment only for a sharp, strangled cry to erupt from his throat just as blood spurted into the air before his eyes.\nRald stopped short, his fingers aching from the grip he kept on his sidearm as he tried to register just what it was he had seen when the icicle that had been speared into the man’s throat, red ink bubbling into his uniform and the snow under him. Something shifted in the air and his eyes jerked to follow the movement just as a glassy figure pushed its way into corporeality. Rald cried in surprise and raised his weapon, firing wildly as chips of ice were torn off of the ethereal figure, a loud, inhuman roar coming from the otherworldly creature as a result.\nIt tackled him to the ground and clawed at the man, claws of permafrost and ice cutting through his uniform with ease as he tried to fend it off with an empty pistol and his light just as the automatic rattle of Cyana’s STG44 filled the air, high-powered rounds sinking into and shattering the fell beast. Rald shivered in shock and coldness as he wormed his way out from under the icy remains, the second sentry cold and still in the corner of his eye just as Espen got to his feet and shook his head at him, signaling the obvious.\nKoen and Dietz were given their weapons back and Rald made the decision to keep all soldiers inside until first light. Whatever that thing was it was nearly impossible to see in the darkness. He wasn’t about to lose anyone else if he could help it. Of course, they had to make it to morning, although they would have the advantage if one of the things tried to get inside. Still, he hoped that the one they had killed was the only one.",
