Study Partners is not my first attempt at a webcomic.\n\nFive or so years ago I was a pretty experienced and successful writer, and was developing an interest in comics. I had collaborated with a few really great artists, but I was unsatisfied since their work, good as it was, never really matched the pictures I had in my mind. So I resolved I'd just learn to draw myself.\n\nWell eventually I could draw two circles, but I struggled and struggled to draw the rest of the fucking owl. Naturally my dreams of making comics kept getting deferred. Didn't stop the ideas from hemorrhaging out of me. Story after story kept my up at night but they all faded away. One of them stuck around and after awhile I just couldn't wait. I had to tell it. I knew my reach was exceeding my grasp, but the muse wouldn't be denied. I figured I'd just start the damn thing, and learn to draw better as the pages wore on. I mean, there's precedent for that.\n\nIt was a big high minded idea. An epic space opera action adventure sci fi tragedy romance. A human and an alien are the last of their species and desperately fleeing across the galaxy from the bad guys. I called it \"Res Nullius\" and published it under a different name. Unfortunately, and predictably, it never successfully attracted an audience.\n\nI didn't make it easy for them. The art, particularly early on, is pretty atrociously bad. Only the most open-minded readers, god bless them, got past the first few pages. It does get better but it hasn't gotten good. The writing also didn't make it easy. I open up the story in media res, right in the middle of a pretty thoroughly complicated sci fi hand-built universe. Though that's not something I'd change if I went and did it over again.\n\nLike I said, it never attracted more than a few dozen readers. That wasn't a huge deal. I kept at it anyway for a couple years. Telling the story was more important to me than popularity, and besides, I was learning a lot. When the inspiration for Study Partners hit me, the production on Res Nullius went down. SP surprised me by being a surprise instant hit. Lots of people were reading and excited and wanted to see what's next. When I finished chapter one of SP, I decided to put Res Nullius on hiatus.\n\nBut there's still a story to tell. My characters are still lost and lonely and scared, and need to get away. My hopes are that when I finish the three core chapters of Study Partners, I'll relaunch Res Nullius where we left off, and with new and improved art. Maybe even finish their story. I'll still do those smaller leaner chapters of Study Partners I mentioned, though I don't know about timing or priority.\n\nWhy am I telling you guys this? Why would you be interested? Fair questions. I guess technically it's not furry, since the female lead is an alien. Though if you want to think of it as a scaly dinogirl x human interspecies romance, I wouldn't really say you were wrong either. It's also not porn, except for a few nude promo pics I did. I did have plans for porn eventually, though in my naive head, the comic would be so large by that point, there would be a big scandalous brouhaha once that finally happened. Like I said, my reach exceeded my grasp.\n\nWell, the few readers I did attract really seemed to like it, despite the faults in the art. I think if you like my characters and story telling in Study Partners, you might like it too.
