Ada picked up the remote from one of the glass end tables and pointed it towards the window. The blinds on the floor to ceiling glass window of her Johannesburg’s luxury high-raise condo rolled up. Dawn’s first sliver of light was just starting to crest the eastern horizon. \n\nAda tapped into the opulence kitchen with its stainless steel appliances, commercial grade stove and its heavy thick granite countertops and hit the button on the coffee maker. The coffee maker beeped and buzzed followed by the sounds of coffee beans being ground and water boiling. After a few moments the mug filled with the dark elixir. Mpho slowly finished the last email, he enjoyed making Ada wait before he hit send. He dug through some papers on his desk, finally finding a thick yellow envelope. Mpho finally turned in his chair to face Ada, he slid his glasses forward on his muzzle and looked over them at her. “My dear you about ready to burst.”
Ada unconsciously put a hand on her belly before she replied. “Is that my payment from the last few, like you promised?”
Mpho nodded “yes yes, have you ever not been paid?” he said holding out the thick yellow envelope, which Ada quickly grabbed from his paw. Ada immediately opened the envelope and started pulling out credit notes paper-clipped to hand written receipt slips. As she went through each one, she motioned over her shoulder. “ What up with the ram ?”
Mpho leaned over and looked out the office door window. “ Ah a nice specimen, you brought us, he will be the main course for a lovely couple… jackals, I believe. They are celebrating their 30th wedding anniversary tonight with their two sons two daughters and 16 grand pups. Don’t you just love to see families that close?”
Ada looked up from counting and shot Mpho an angry glare. “ What the FUCK is this you mismatched painted mutt ?”
Mpho was taken a back and set up straight in his office chair. “ Excuse me ma’am?!”
Ada held out one of the slips and the paper clipped credits “What … is … this?” 25% deduction for quality?”
Mpho took the slip then handed it back to Ada “ Yes my dear, as you know here the Safari club we only serve the highest quality . That Zebra you brought us, his liver was mostly fat his kidneys were shot… completely uneditable. Where did you pick him up a dialysis clinic?”
Ada pointed a hoofed finger right at Mpho’s nose. “ You gave me three days notice that you needed a zebra stallion… THREE DAYS!? YOU should have given me a bonus!”
Mpho nodded and smiled “ you have been an excellent provider and a reliable source. Otherwise, you would’ve only been paid half instead we only deducted 25% be happy that you received that much. If anything you did that old fellow a favor. He probably wouldn’t have live another six months.”
Ada crossed her arms, shook her head and bit her tongue.
Mpho stood up and put on his most sincere customer service diplomatic smile. “ If it makes you feel any better. You can fuck that ram out there, he has about 30 minutes before he’s due in the dining room?”
Ada snorted and shook her head, “Fuck you!”
Mpho shook his head in return “ Sorry my dear, you’re not my type, thanks for the offer, rain check ?”
Ada just rolled her eyes and held her belly before she replied “ You have my shots ?”
Mpho clapped his paws together then slapped Ada on the shoulder. “ See that’s the spirit, like the Americans might say, let’s get this show on the road… umm yeeha ?” Ada just stared back not sure what the hell the tri-colored mutt was talking about. Mpho unlocked a cabinets above his desk, opened a safe removed several prefilled syringes and a number of pill bottles. Ada dropped her pants and leaned over the desk as Mpho carefully, gave her both injections. The injections would hopefully induce labor right in time for the reservation along with a few pills to help with stress and pain.
Ada pulled back up her pants and turned to go sit in the break room and wait for the drugs to take effect. Just as she was about to open the office door Mpho stopped her. “ Oh Ada one last thing… do be nice to our new kitchen assistant. He is inexperienced, but his family I believe his uncle, controls one of the largest hyena organized crimes syndicates in the east.” Ada grimaced and just nodded without turning around.
Three hours later, Ada stood mostly naked only wearing a thin silk robe beside her staff collar and jewelry. She bent over the couch in the break room and tried to control her breathing. The contractions had started to come in waves, it felt like a hot burning sensation deep in her groin. She wished the damn predators would finish their other courses, how long could a bunch of predators drink soup and eat a couple roasted rabbits?

The two servers opened the two sliding doors to the private dining room and Ada stepped into the small room with a flourish. She faced three elegantly dressed lions, two relatively young adults one male one female maybe in their mid 30s and a cub, maybe in his early teens. The two adults looked up politely and put down their wine glasses and gave Ada their full attention. Their cub seemed bored with an elbow on the table and barely looked up.
Ada smiled broadly, that showcased her straight very white lower teeth and turned slowly before she faced the three dinners again. “ I hope you three fine felines have enjoyed.” Ada paused and gritted her teeth for several long moments through the largest contractions so far before she took a deep breath and continued. “Many apologies, I hope you have enjoyed your dining experience here at the Safari club so far, are you all ready for the main course?”
The two adults smiled and nodded their fangs seemed very yellow and sharp. Ada contained her fear, she had done this many times before.
