"description": "Art by Arrteen on FurAffinity\n\nThere is an important division in the Contract Hunters, formally known as the Medic Hunters. While they are only Hunters in name and not a true Hunter, they are treated as equals by every Hunter out there. They are highly protected and valued by every member out there, with one of the most honorable Contracts to take on is protection of one of the many field hospitals that have been set up around the world that take care of and treat the injured Hunters that are on active quests. The world of a Hunter is extremely dangerous and injuries, no matter the severity are a constant reality to every one of them. It is enforced in every Hunter to treat any Medic Hunter with full respect as no matter who you are, no matter how skilled you are, one day you will find yourself under one of their knives as they will work tirelessly to save your life\n\n~ \nBeing more of a target Hunters, it was rare for Ion and Zephyr to take on a security Contract but with Meeka wanting to do a small tour of duty as a surgeon at one of the many Hunter's field hospitals that were set up around the world to take care of and treat Hunters that were injured in the field far away from the Hunter's special hospital in Eios. These were make shift tent style hospitals with many recovery beds in a single tent and anywhere from 4 to 8 operating tables inside a single surgery tent with usually pairs of operating tables placed fairly close together as some equipment had to be shared between patients being operated on. These were not the best conditions but ever since the Contract Hunters started putting up these spaces, survival rates for seriously injured Hunters went up drastically. Meeka had requested them to take on the Contract to be part of the security team for the one she was going to be stationed at, as working at the field hospital was fairly dangerous work and having them there would make her feel safer. Ion couldn't refuse, Meeka was family being his older cousin and she is responsible for saving his life in his early days as a Hunter when he got seriously injured, Ion always says he owes his life to her for it. The other reason why Ion and Zephyr wanted to take on this contract was because without the Hunter field hospital system, both of them wouldn't be here today either. \n\nNot long after Ion's very long recovery from his first serious injury and both he and Zephyr were getting back into the swing of things as Hunters again, while out on a group Hunt, they faced fierce resistance resulting in the majority of the group getting seriously injured, including both Ion and Zephyr. Luckily there was a Hunter's field hospital nearby where the group was extracted to and with the skilled hands of the surgeons stationed there, performing the life saving surgeries on the injured members of the group, most of them were able to survive the ordeal. In all there were 12 members of the Hunter group, with 7 receiving serious injuries with 5 being able to pull through with the help of the surgeons but they lost 2 Hunter comrades as they succumbed to their injuries. Ion and Zephyr were one of the lucky ones who were able to pull through and while Zephyr's surgery went fairly smoothly, Ion's was more complex, with complications from his first serious injury making it harder to save his life. In fact according to the surgeons, Ion should have been the 3rd death casualty of the group but by some miracle that even the surgeons couldn't explain, he was able to survive though his heart did suffer some more damage and weakened a bit more then it did from his first serious injury.\n\nIon placed his hand over his chest, remembering what the surgeons told him back then, about how his heart should have been too damaged for him to survive that day. He did pull through though not without consequences, over the next several years he did require several surgeries on his heart to keep it functioning properly, with only in the last year having to have a synthetic heart transplanted in his natural one's place as it did eventually gave out but his natural heart did defy the odds for so many years. Looking around the grounds of the field hospital, Ion thought to himself it had been 10 years since he was a patient here, as Meeka was stationed at the very same one that saved both his and Zephyr's life a decade ago. That was the last time Ion himself also had a serious injury while out as a Hunter, sure he still had some minor ones here and there and undergone several surgeries since that time but those where just to fix the complications from his serious injuries. His heart problems have all but been fixed whit his synthetic transplant but his bowel issues still needed attention, usually requiring surgery every few years to fix. A small price to pay for being alive Ion always thought to himself, thinking about how much he has grown over these 10 years, back then they were just too young to fully understand the real dangers of being a Hunter and they were lucky enough to survive to learn from their mistakes. These injuries caused Ion to have a different mindset while out on a Hunt, with it paying off as he had not had a life threatening injury since then even with such a dangerous profession. Zephyr too changed his philosophy, going for a more a defense first into offence approach, while Ion continued to have the offence first mindset, he learned how to be more dexterous and using his lightning speed to his advantage, learning how to never get hit even in the most extreme circumstances. This new approach worked wonders for the duo, though 3 years ago Zephyr did suffer another very serious injury which just brought back the point, no matter how skilled you are and just how prepared you are, being a Hunter is a dangerous profession, serious injuries are still inevitable.\n\nIon sat down on a bench near the front of the facility to take a quick break, now placing his hand over his gut remembering the pain the bullets that ripped through his body caused on that day. It had not been even a year since Ion was reinstated after taking 2 years to recover from his first major injury, he and Zephyr took on smaller Contract to get back into the swing of things. Then a big contract came in and called for several Hunters to help take down a militia group that was causing problems in the western lands. Feeling that they needed to get back to higher level stuff, Ion and Zephyr joined on the Contract with 10 others and set out to take the militia group out. While Ion and Zephyr were the most inexperienced of the group, the other Hunters were quite impressed with just how skillful and stealthy they were, even out matching some of the more veteran Hunters in the group. But it wasn't before long that their presence was noticed and while at first the Hunter group was able to take down the resistance they faced, multiple reinforcements quickly arrived. The Hunter group decided to retreat as a couple of members were caught off guard and received serious wounds. Ion and Zephyr were sent back ahead to help clear a path for the escape as getting the injured out of there was top priority. Things were going ok for them, clearing the path was not too hard as they were making grounds on their getaway. But then suddenly gunshots could be heard close by, followed from a cry out from Zephyr as Ion turned to him to see him falling to the ground with blood starting to rapidly stain his tunic. Ion was able to take down Zephyr's attacker and quickly went to his side and examined him to see Zephyr was shot 3 times, with the bullets looking like they pierced his abdomen and luckily nothing in his chest. Zephyr let out some whimpers in pain as Ion placed his hand on his cheek, telling him that he would be ok before Zephyr passed out unconscious. Ion lifted Zephyr on his back and quickly headed towards the extraction point, he had to get Zephyr to safety as he didn't know what he would do if he lost him. \n\nIon was almost there when suddenly another gunshot rand out and thats when he felt it, an immense pain pulsing in his gut as a bullet had pierced him. Ion could only start to feel his blood drip down his body before a second gunshot was heard followed by a second painful pulse in his gut as he collapsed backwards, landing on top of Zephyr. Ion couldn't move as the pain was too intense and he was loosing blood fast. Ion could hear footsteps coming his way as he decided to close his eyes and stay as still as possible despite all the pain to hopefully fool their enemy that he and Zephyr were dead. Ion could feel the hand of the enemy feeling him around, all while Ion tried to hold his breath and stay perfectly still. He heard him say to another militia that he think they were both dead before the other one said it doesn't hurt to make sure before another gunshot rang out with a third pulsing pain Ion felt in his gut, then another one came, closer to his chest before the gunshots stopped and Ion could hear the slashing sword of a sword. Deciding to open his eyes, Ion could see 2 of the more veteran Hunters in the group quickly coming to his side. One of them placed a hand on his chest and told him to take deep breaths as Ion frantically told them to help Zephyr. He told Ion just to remain calm as they carefully moved Ion's body off of Zephyr's as the other hunter attended to him. The one attending to Ion took off his cloak, bunched it up and pressed it hard into Ion's gut making him yelp out in pain. The Hunter told Ion he knows it hurts but he needed to keep pressure on his wounds before asking the other Hunter how Zephyr was doing. He yelled back that he was still breathing but needed medical attention right away as the one attending to Ion called back the same thing about Ion.\n\nThe events that happened next were somewhat a blur to Ion, as he tried to concentrate on just taking deep breaths and calming himself down though the pain was really intense. It seamed like hours though in minutes a Hunter extraction team came to their location and placed Ion and Zephyr on portable stretchers, taking them to awaiting medical vehicles. Each injured Hunter was placed in a separate one and once securely inside they sped off to the Hunter's field hospital nearby. During the trip, Ion could feel the medics removing all of his clothing as electrodes were placed on his chest to monitor his heart rate and a blood bag drip was started to help with his blood loss along with the feeling of a catheter being inserted. The Hunter that was attending to Ion in the field was kneeling beside him in the vehicle as he was handed a hand pump oxygen mask and placed it over Ion's snout. The Hunter again told Ion just to take deep breaths as he gently pumped fresh air into to Ion's mask to help with his breathing while the other medics just continue to hold pressure on Ion's wounds as that was all they could do for now until they arrived at the field hospital and Ion could be taken into surgery.\n\nAs the vehicles arrived at the field hospital, they were unloaded one by one with each injured Hunter being taken into the surgery tent. When Ion's turn came, he was rushed out of the vehicle where he could feel the air on his exposed fur and all the blood dripping down it. Once inside the surgery tent, Ion was taken to an open operating table next to another one where anther surgeon was already hard at work operating on someone. Ion turned his head slightly over to see Zephyr unconsciously laying there with the surgeon already having his gut fully cut open with a lot of insides pulled out as the surgeon was deep inside of him doing what he needed to do. Ion was just shocked at the amount of blood pouring out of Zephyr but felt some relief looking at the ECG monitor near him, seeing Zephyr's heart beating at what looked like a normal rate. Ion knew he was in for the same thing when the surgeon removed his mechanical arm, tilted his head back straight, placing an oxygen mask over his snout before injecting a needle into his gut and finally the feeling of the surgeon dragging his scalpel over his belly. The pain in his gut began to dull as a local anesthetic was injected there and within mere seconds Ion felt his gut fully pulled open, the cold metal of the retractors resting on the side of his body. It was a weird sensation as Ion felt the hands of the surgeon inside him, moving around and pulling out parts of his insides. It was at this point Ion started to find it hard for he to stay awake, as he was starting to phase in and out of consciousness before feeling heavy pressure inside his chest. Ion tried to fight through it but before long his eyes shut closed and all he could see was darkness as the line of his heart monitor fully flattened with the machine giving off an continuous beep. \n\nThe surgeon quickly turned his attention to giving Ion CPR as a nearby medic brought over the defibrillator, powered it up and placed the paddles on Ion's chest giving him a shock. Ion's torso lifted off the table before landing back down but there was no change shown on the heart monitor. The shocked him again and again, increasing the power each time but Ion's heart didn't respond to any of it. The surgeon then noticed a scar on the side of Ion's chest, recognizing it as a thoracotomy scar and decided to go that route to give Ion one more change at getting his heart to work as the scar indicated to the surgeon that Ion could have some sort of heart condition that was causing the external defibrillator to fail. The surgeon cut along the line of the scar, quickly opening a hole into the side of Ion's chest and retracted it open, hearing Ion's ribs near the opening popping but that was the least of the surgeon's concerns. When the opening was spread open enough to put his hand in, the surgeon took small snips and cut the remaining tissues, exposing part of Ion's lung. The surgeon was relieved to see the lung still working, as it meant Ion was still breathing but was just in cardiac arrest. Pushing the lung to the side a bit, the surgeon reached in to get a feel of the area around Ion's heart, noting that he was missing his pericardium, meaning that he had more then just a thoracotomy done to him in the past. That didn't matter right now though as the surgeon started to manually pump Ion's heart to restore some blood flow as he motioned for a medic to set up an internal defibrillator. Once that was done, the surgeon let go of Ion's heart, took the long stick like paddles into his hand, inserting them into Ion's chest, placing one on each side of his heart and squeezing tightly. \n\nShocks were continuously flowing into Ion's stilled heart as the surgeon held them there for about 20 seconds before Ion's heart began to pulsate again. Ion's heart wasn't beating properly but a few more shocks got it on the right track, it was beating slower then it normally should but enough for the surgeon to continue back on Ion's injuries. The surgeon carefully started to remove the bullet slugs out of Ion, though this proved difficult as the deeper he went, the slower Ion's heart rate became. The bullet inside Ion's liver was especially a problem as the surgeon tried to gently cut it out, Ion's liver was just pulling itself apart. This caused Ion to go into cardiac arrest a second time, with it taking a even more forceful squeeze on the internal defibrillator to get it beating again. At this point it was decided that it was safer to just remove part of Ion's liver with the bullet in it as trying to remove the bullet without damaging the liver was putting too much stress on Ion's body. Next to him though, Zephyr's surgery was going fairly well, the surgeon was able to remove the bullet from his liver without damaging it as well as the ones tangled in his intestines. Zephyr's bleeding was stopped and wounds repaired as the surgeon gave him one final internal examination before closing Zephyr up and sending him off to the recovery tent, expecting him to make a full recovery. With no other patients in the queue, the surgeon attending to Zephyr quickly changed into fresh scrubs and came back to help out the surgeon attending to Ion. The existing condition of Ion's insides made his injuries more severe but the two surgeons where able to remove the bullets from Ion, having to remove a few parts of his intestines and part of his stomach as well in the process but closed his wounds and stopped his bleeding. \n\nAfter giving Ion's abdominal cavity a final inspection, the surgeons closed his belly up and removed the retractor from Ion's chest incision but decided to leave it open, placing some surgical tape just to keep the fur closed just in case as Ion's heart was beating very slowly. They decided to medically induce a coma for Ion before sending him to a special recovery tent where he would have constant monitoring as the surgeons only gave him a 30% chance at survival as they thought Ion's heart was just too damaged. Zephyr woke up a few hours latter in the recovery tent and looked around to see 2 other Hunters that were part of his group in recovery beds and 5 others around that seamed uninjured. One of them came over after seeing Zephyr awake, glad that he was able to pull through from his injuries. Zephyr asked about Ion but the Hunter said he didn't know about his status as he was still in the surgery tent being operated on. Zephyr curled up into a ball as fear became to overwhelm him. Not again he though to himself, the last thing he remembered before getting shot was calling out to Ion and he was uninjured. \"Did he get injured again trying to protect me?\" Zephyr thought and he thought back to the incident when Ion lost his left arm, that slash was meant for him but Ion put himself in the way and almost died because of it, it was his fault again that Ion was seriously hurt. \n\nAnother hour went by before some news came back from the surgery tent, one of the 4 where still being operated on had succumbed to their injuries and the other 3 were transported to an ICU tent for continuous monitoring. Zephyr was relieved to hear Ion was one of the ones heading to the ICU tent but still felt bad for the loss of one of their Hunter comrades. A week went by and while most of the other injured Hunters were transported back to the hospital in Eios, Zephyr refused to leave while Ion was recovering here as his condition had not improved and was too dangerous for him to be transported back to Eios. Meanwhile Zephyr was recovering well, he was able to take short walks around the grounds of the field hospital and a few times a day was aloud to visit Ion in the ICU tent as doctors thought it would good for both of their recoveries if they could see each other, even with Ion comatose, maybe Zephyr's presence could help but Ion's chances were dwindling day by day. Ion was the only one of that Hunter group left in the ICU tent, after a few days one of the injured Hunters was able to recover enough to be placed in the regular recovery tent and was eventually transported back to Eios while the other one unfortunately also succumbed to their injuries. Zephyr just hoped day after day Ion would show some sort of improvement as he didn't know what he would do without him. After about 10 days there was some good news as Ion's heart started to beat better and after 2 week since the incident, Ion heart was beating back at it's normal rate, well what was normal for Ion with his existing condition. Zephyr was brought into the ICU tent as the medics decided it was time to start letting Ion out of his medically induced coma and wanted him to be there when he awoke. \n\nIt took a few hours but Ion did eventually open his eyes for the first time in 2 weeks, with Zephyr being the one to greet him back to the world of the living. Ion was amazed that he was out for so long as the last thing he remembered was passing out on the operating table. Just like the last time, Zephyr grabbed one of Ion's hands, with tears in his eyes and just kept saying he was sorry over and over again for getting him seriously hurt again. Unlike last time, since Ion didn't feel as weak this time, yelled back calling Zephyr an idiot that he still felt like these incidents were his fault. Ion argued back that he would always protect him with his life as Zephyr meant more to him then anyone in this world. Zephyr countered back that if he was more careful and didn't get shot, Ion wouldn't had gotten shot himself trying to carry him to safety. Ion argued back that injuries happen ,it is part of being a Hunter and besides, it was his fault the he didn't notice enemies were close to them, had he sensed his surroundings better, he could have avoided being shot while still getting Zephyr to safety. The medics just laughed at the two mates arguing and decided to put an end to it, Ion needed to calm down to prevent anymore stress on his body. Know they still wanted to be together, the medic made them promise just to have smaller casual conversations or Zephyr would be kicked out of the ICU tent. They agreed and spent the rest of the evening just enjoying each others company. During dinner time, food was brought to them, with Zephyr having normal hospital food while Ion was given some small soft stuff to start out, he was able to eat by himself though a little difficult with one hand as he was not aloud to reattach his mechanical one yet. After dinner it would be lights out for Ion as he was still assigned to the ICU tent, so Zephyr was kicked out at that time where he spent the rest of the evening doing simple recreation activities before it was lights out for him as well. \n\nThe next day Ion was moved to the regular recovery tent and while he was not aloud to get up and move around like Zephyr was, they did place him in a bed beside him. After a few more days, Ion was cleared to go on small walks, but was a bit weak in the legs to where Zephyr had to help support him. They would walk around the grounds as much as Ion could before they would come near the front of the facility and rest on a nearby bench. Here they would just talk while watching the supplies and injured Hunters come in and recovered one leave, some with minor injuries and some with more major ones but noting like what they both went through. This became a daily routine for a few days, just sitting here just watching how well of an oiled machine this field hospital was before they were informed the next morning, both of them would be transferred to the hospital in Eios as Ion was well enough to be transported now. Call it nostalgia but after his small patrol, Zephyr made his way to the front of the facility, having a feeling Ion would be there. He sat down beside him, noticing that Ion was clutching his gut a bit before asking him \"brings back memories?\" Ion quickly removed his hand before just responding with \"ya\", continuing to look at the flurry of activity of patients and supplies coming and going, still being a well oiled machine even after a decade. Placing an arm around each other, both Ion and Zephyr were thankful that the Hunters set up these places and kept them going, as they know the both of them wouldn't be here today if they were not.\n~",
"description_bbcode_parsed": "<span style='word-wrap: break-word;'>Art by Arrteen on FurAffinity<br /><br />There is an important division in the Contract Hunters, formally known as the Medic Hunters. It is enforced in every Hunter to treat any Medic Hunter with full respect as no matter who you are, no matter how skilled you are, one day you will find yourself under one of their knives as they will work tirelessly to save your life<br /><br />~ <br />Being more of a target Hunters, it was rare for Ion and Zephyr to take on a security Contract but with Meeka wanting to do a small tour of duty as a surgeon at one of the many Hunter&#039;s field hospitals that were set up around the world to take care of and treat Hunters that were injured in the field far away from the Hunter&#039;s special hospital in Eios. Ion couldn&#039;t refuse, Meeka was family being his older cousin and she is responsible for saving his life in his early days as a Hunter when he got seriously injured, Ion always says he owes his life to her for it. The other reason why Ion and Zephyr wanted to take on this contract was because without the Hunter field hospital system, both of them wouldn&#039;t be here today either. <br /><br />Not long after Ion&#039;s very long recovery from his first serious injury and both he and Zephyr were getting back into the swing of things as Hunters again, while out on a group Hunt, they faced fierce resistance resulting in the majority of the group getting seriously injured, including both Ion and Zephyr. Luckily there was a Hunter&#039;s field hospital nearby where the group was extracted to and with the skilled hands of the surgeons stationed there, performing the life saving surgeries on the injured members of the group, most of them were able to survive the ordeal. In all there were 12 members of the Hunter group, with 7 receiving serious injuries with 5 being able to pull through with the help of the surgeons but they lost 2 Hunter comrades as they succumbed to their injuries. Ion and Zephyr were one of the lucky ones who were able to pull through and while Zephyr&#039;s surgery went fairly smoothly, Ion&#039;s was more complex, with complications from his first serious injury making it harder to save his life. In fact according to the surgeons, Ion should have been the 3rd death casualty of the group but by some miracle that even the surgeons couldn&#039;t explain, he was able to survive though his heart did suffer some more damage and weakened a bit more then it did from his first serious injury.<br /><br />Ion placed his hand over his chest, remembering what the surgeons told him back then, about how his heart should have been too damaged for him to survive that day. He did pull through though not without consequences, over the next several years he did require several surgeries on his heart to keep it functioning properly, with only in the last year having to have a synthetic heart transplanted in his natural one&#039;s place as it did eventually gave out but his natural heart did defy the odds for so many years. Looking around the grounds of the field hospital, Ion thought to himself it had been 10 years since he was a patient here, as Meeka was stationed at the very same one that saved both his and Zephyr&#039;s life a decade ago. This new approach worked wonders for the duo, though 3 years ago Zephyr did suffer another very serious injury which just brought back the point, no matter how skilled you are and just how prepared you are, being a Hunter is a dangerous profession, serious injuries are still inevitable.<br /><br />Ion sat down on a bench near the front of the facility to take a quick break, now placing his hand over his gut remembering the pain the bullets that ripped through his body caused on that day. But it wasn&#039;t before long that their presence was noticed and while at first the Hunter group was able to take down the resistance they faced, multiple reinforcements quickly arrived. The Hunter group decided to retreat as a couple of members were caught off guard and received serious wounds. Ion and&nbsp;&nbsp;Zephyr were sent back ahead to help clear a path for the escape as getting the injured out of there was top priority. Things were going ok for them, clearing the path was not too hard as they were making grounds on their getaway. Just like the last time, Zephyr grabbed one of Ion&#039;s hands, with tears in his eyes and just kept saying he was sorry over and over again for getting him seriously hurt again. Unlike last time, since Ion didn&#039;t feel as weak this time, yelled back calling Zephyr an idiot that he still felt like these incidents were his fault. Ion argued back that he would always protect him with his life as Zephyr meant more to him then anyone in this world. Zephyr countered back that if he was more careful and didn&#039;t get shot, Ion wouldn&#039;t had gotten shot himself trying to carry him to safety. Ion argued back that injuries happen ,it is part of being a Hunter and besides, it was his fault the he didn&#039;t notice enemies were close to them, had he sensed his surroundings better, he could have avoided being shot while still getting Zephyr to safety. After dinner it would be lights out for Ion as he was still assigned to the ICU tent, so Zephyr was kicked out at that time where he spent the rest of the evening doing simple recreation activities before it was lights out for him as well.&nbsp;&nbsp; <br /><br />The next day Ion was moved to the regular recovery tent and while he was not aloud to get up and move around like Zephyr was, they did place him in a bed beside him. He sat down beside him, noticing that Ion was clutching his gut a bit before asking him &quot;brings back memories?&quot; Ion quickly removed his hand before just responding with &quot;ya&quot;, continuing to look at the flurry of activity of patients and supplies coming and going, still being a well oiled machine even after a decade. Placing an arm around each other, both Ion and Zephyr were thankful that the Hunters set up these places and kept them going, as they know the both of them wouldn&#039;t be here today if they were not.<br />~</span>",
