"description": "Art by AltairXXX on FurAffinity\n\nX-Ray version, Showing all of Ion's Internal Injuries: https://inkbunny.net/s/2097625\n\nThe origin of Ion's scars and his mechanical arm. After taking a serious sword blow from Virgil to save Zephyr's life, Ion is seriously injured and a quick thinking Zephyr is able to get Ion and himself away from the danger, where he quickly brought Ion to the Hunter's Special Hospital for lifesaving treatment. This image take place between https://inkbunny.net/s/1975583 and https://inkbunny.net/s/2006335 showing the moment where Ion goes into cardiac arrest from his serious injury and Meeka having to manually pump his heart, literally having Ion's life in her hands. Story takes place during all 3 images combined and them some after (with a bit of updates and a few retcons from the older stories). Warning, the story is long and is a bit graphic.\n\n~\nMeeka was getting ready to go home for the day after a not too crazy day as one of the surgeons at the Hunter's Hospital. Despite her young age, she was considered a world class surgeon, being able to save a lot of patients and Hunters that would have mortal injuries if any other surgeon was operating on them. She was ready to walk out the door when an ER nurse cam rushing in to her office asking Meeka to come with her quickly. When she got to the ER. Meeka was surprised to find a very distraught Zephyr and before she could inquire what was ailing him, she looked down at the gurney to find a horrifying sight. \n\nHer younger cousin Ion, who had only celebrated his 18th birthday about a month ago, was laying there covered in lots of blood with his left arm missing, some smaller gashes and a very large gash down his abdomen with some of his intestines starting to protrude out. Meeka quickly snapped into action, taking control of the situation, ordering the nurses around her to start Ion a blood drip as he was bleeding out fairly fast, another one to put an oxygen mask on him to start pumping oxygen into Ion's lungs and another one to set up the ECG to collect Ion's vitals while Meeka herself went to find an open operating room. When she came back moments latter, she saw that Ion's condition was starting to deteriorate more, as his heart rate and blood pressure was dangerously low. With no time to waste, Meeka sent some of the nurses to attend to Zephyr who was now having a full out panic attack, while she and a few others rushed Ion into the operating room. Ion's breathing was getting very raspy as he was going in and out of consciousness, as Meeka tried to assure him and herself that he was going to be alright. \n\nAfter getting Ion on to the operating table, his breathing rapidly deteriorated to the point where he could no longer breathe on his own and the oxygen mask had to be taken off and a breathing tube was inserted in it's place. Ion's vitals continued to deteriorate as his heart rate and blood pressure were still falling as more and more blood started to cover the operating table. Knowing time was of the essence, Meeka quickly grabbed the scalpel and made a large incision along the length of the gash (and them some) to open up Ion's abdomen as her assistants started to clamp the bleeding blood vessels on his severed arm and shoulder gash. Blood started pouring out of Ion's incision rapidly, as Meeka spread his fur apart to get a better look inside; multiple parts of Ion's intestines where either severely damaged or severed, as well as a large deep cut to his stomach and a gash on his left lung with bits of broken ribs scattered through out. Blood was pooling in the abdominal cavity, making a thorough inspection almost impossible. \n\nMeeka had to pull out a significant portion of Ion's bowel, to start any repair work, as trying to suction the blood out wasn't working as Ion's abdominal cavity wouldn't stay drained due to the excessive bleeding being faster than the suction could handle. Sifting through the loops of intestines that were now protruding from Ion's incision, getting a better look now Meeka could see Ion's small intestines here heavily damaged, they were either sliced or severed in multiple locations and his large intestine was completely severed at the top of the descending colon going into the traverse colon. Meeka clamped any damages and bleeding blood vessels while either stitching up or removing any damaged bowel sections. Ion was still severely bleeding from his internal organ wounds but she was making progress on the bowels, despite Ion's very low heart rate and blood pressure. Now with less and less blood was leaking in to Ion's abdomen, to a point now where it would stay mostly drained and more repair work on the internal abdominal/lower chest organs, like his injured stomach, spleen and the gash on the lower part of his left lung. As Meeka continued to work, her spirits were starting to get lifted as it seamed Ion would pull through, but where quickly dashed when her worst fear happened. \n\nThe ECG suddenly starting to make the dreaded long continuous beep sound, as Ion's heart rate and blood pressure flat lined, putting him into cardiac arrest. Meeka quickly started to perform chest compressions on Ion while one of her assistants grabbed and started up the defibrillator. Meeka then took the paddles into her hands, placing them on Ion's chest, releasing a large voltage as Ion's body violently spraying up with the shock, spraying blood everywhere. The shock did nothing as the voltage was increased and Meeka tried again. Still noting happened and the voltage was turned up to the maximum, as Meeka shocked Ion again, but his heart would not restart. Running out of options and time, Meeka did the only thing she could do at this point, she grabbed the scalpel and made an incision quickly between Ion's ribs near his heart. Meeka quickly pulled back the fur, making a separation between two of Ion's ribs as cracking sounds could be heard. She then slid her hand into Ion's chest, feeling another one of Ion's ribs breaking apart, but now was not the time to deal with that, as she pushed aside Ion's left lung and grabbed onto his non-beating heart. \n\nShe started to squeeze and pump Ion's heart herself, to give his body and most importantly his brain some much needed blood flow. After a few minutes her hand started to clamp up as she slid her other hand into Ion's chest, using both to continue to manually pump his heart. Meeka pleaded with Ion to stay with her, as Meeka feared the end was nearing for someone she cared so much for. Trying to keep a rhythm with Ion's still inflating and deflating lungs, that were still getting oxygen from the ventilator, knew she could not keep pumping Ion's heart herself forever. Ion's last chance, the internal defibrillator, was already set up by one of Meeka's assistants, waiting for her to give Ion's heart a direct shock as the last attempt to resuscitate him. Meeka was sacred though, to stop pumping Ion's heart herself, as she knew if the internal defibrillator didn't work, Ion would pass on, and as long as she held his heart in her hands, she held his very life in her hands and didn't want to let go but she knew she was running out of time, as the longer Ions stayed in cardiac arrest, the less likely the defibrillator would work. \n\nPleading with Ion one last time to stay with her, she let go of Ion's heart, quickly grabbed the internal paddles and placed them against Ion's heart, squeezing it tightly as volts of electricity were transferred into Ion's non-beating heart. Ion's heart started to vibrate a bit as Meeka continued to hold the defibrillator tightly against it, continuing to plead with Ion, before miraculously, Ion's heart started to beat on it own again although very slowly. Meeka led up on the tightness she was holding the defibrillator against his heart, giving it more room to beat on it's own, as Ion's heart rate and blood pressure started normalizing. Meeka breathing a huge sigh of relief that Ion's vitals were back up and running, though she was worried about Ion's brain function, as it was de-oxygenated for a short time as she hoped her manual pumping of Ion's heart was enough to prevent any damage. Looking at Ion's fairly sized heart, now beating again with a somewhat slower rhythm, showing that he still had life flowing through him. She watched and waited for a bit, continuing to view Ion's heart making it's soft and pulsating beats, as a way to make sure Ion's heart was running fine before continuing his life saving surgery. \n\nMeeka finished closing up all the wounds to his small intestines, unfortunately having to remove about a third of them due to them being too damaged and un-salvageable. Meeka was able to fully reconnect Ion's large intestine without having to remove any part of it, as for the time bing, Ion's bowels were repaired as much as they could be. Next Meeka fully propped open Ion's abdomen, exposing all his internal abdominal organs and got to work on stitching back together Ion's spleen which she was able to mostly salvage. After that, Meeka fully stitched closed the deep cut on Ion's stomach in a way that his stomach acids would not eat away at the stitching, reopening the wound and causing more internal damage than what has already been done. Finally meeka was able to get to the small gash on his left lung, stitching it closed and getting it to function more normally. \n\nOnce she was sure all of Ion's internal bleeding was dealt with, Meeka pushed back in all of Ion's remaining bowels and anything else that slid out during the surgery. Ion was now no longer in danger of bleeding to death from internal injuries but there would still be work that would need to be done in the future as making full repairs to his internals would come in future surgeries if Ion would continue to survive. At this point, Meeka only wanted to stop his bleeding and stabilize him, causing the least amount of extra trauma to his body as possible as if Ion's body would suffer too much trauma, by doing too much too quickly, it would not recover properly, only the necessities of saving his life were important at this moment, full function would have to come latter. With Ion's abdomen taken care of, Meeka stitched up and stapled closed the large incision down the side of his chest/belly, still leaving his chest incision between his ribs open as they finished up the surgery, just in case Ion's heart needed immediate attention again as it was still beating at a low rate and on the line of stopping again. \n\nMeeka next set her attention on Ion's severed arm, removing the clamps and stitching closed all the broken blood vessels untill the bleeding stopped. After grinding down his splintered bone to smooth it out, as the break was not clean, she stitched closed the flesh around it, to give Ion a clean stump. Meeka then wrapped Ion' stump in bandages and then focused on his shoulder gash. Stitching closed the broken blood vessels and muscle tissues there, she thoroughly cleaned the wound to prevent any future infection before stitching and stapling the fur closed, finally fixing another one of Ion's injuries. \n\nThe final thing to take care of was the large gash over Ion's nose, Meeka tried stitching it together many times but they kept coming undone as the wound would not bond together and close. Thinking quickly Meeka grabbed a small medical plate and bent it in the shape of Ion's snout. After applying stitched again, Meeka got one of her assistants to hold the wound closed so the stitches would not come undone, as she quickly applied the plate over them and using screws and pins, was able to graft the plate over Ion's nose, which finally kept the gash closed. \n\nNow knowing Ion was not in anymore immediate danger, Meeka finally stitched closed Ion's chest incision between his ribs, continuing to watch Ion's heart beat away until it could not be scene anymore with the final stitch fully closing the incision. After applying some surgical staples to keep the incision closed, Meeka placed her hand on his chest, to physically feel his beating heart underneath his chest structures, giving her the physical assurance she needed, that he was still alive, even though the ECG was beeping to it rhythm in the background. Ion was taken off the operating table and placed on a gurney to be brought to the ICU where he would be monitored 24/7 to make sure he was still fine and any medical attention he needed could be administered immediately. Tired, Meeka when to the changing room to remove her bloodied scrubs as she almost broke down at the though of almost loosing a member of her family. Wiping away some tears, she knew she had one more duty to do before she could finally head home for the night. \n\nShe when to see Ion's best friend and partner Zephyr as he was admitted to the hospital himself with hyperventilation from the stress of seeing his friend get seriously injured. Zephyr had an IV inserted in him, giving him some stress relieving medication as he had passed out from all furry of the events that he had to witness. Sitting down beside him, Meeka gently woke him up and as his eyes open and reality was brought back to him, the first thing Zephyr wanted to know was Ion's condition. Meeka gently place a hand on him and reassured him that Ion, while still in critical condition, he was still alive and need his support to help him through his recovery process. Zephyr wanted to see Ion, but Meeka said it was too late at night and the Zephyr himself still needed some more rest to keep his strength up, so he would be able to help Ion out latter. Meeka then got Zephyr's release form the hospital and took him back to his and Ion's home where she stayed by his side and looked after him for the night, as she could still see he was stressed out and his mind was not all there at the moment. \n\nMeeka made sure Zephyr got at least some sleep that night, before bringing him back to the hospital the next morning, to visit Ion. Zephyr and Meeka were glad to learn that Ion had shown some improvement over night, especially with his heart rate and blood pressure back in normal range and that he was coherent, but he was still very weak. Zephyr visibly nervous about walking into Ion's hospital room, not knowing what to expect, calmed down a bit when he finally got to see Ion, though he was still sleeping. Zephyr felt a small sorrow when he got closer and saw that Ions had an oxygen mask on to help him breathe, all the scars running down his body and looking at the bandaged stump where his left arm used to be. Pulling up a chair and sitting down beside Ion, Zephyr grabbed Ion's right hand and held it close as Ion began to wake up. \n\nOpening his eyes and seeing Zephyr there beside him, Ion cracked a small smile as his breathing was hard and raspy. Zephyr could only muster \"i'm sorry\" over and over again as he tried to hold back tears but couldn't. Ion breathing continued to be heavy as he was in a bit of pain, slowly told him it wan's his fault. Zephyr countered back saying that if he didn't insist on taking a high level contract, Ion wouldn't be in this situation. But slowly, Ion countered back, saying that he accepted it as well with all the risks that came with it. Zephyr then countered that the blow was meant for him and that Ion should not have gotten in the way. Ion slowly countered back, saying that if he didn't jump in and deflect the attack, that Zephyr would be dead, as for him the attack would have been a death blow. Ion then looked at the stump on his left arm told him that him jumping in only cost him is arm and was worth it to save Zephyr's life. Zephyr couldn't hold back anymore as he clutched Ion's hand harder and started full on crying. Ion could only crack a small smile again as the pain was starting to get to him, even with painkillers running down his IV.\n\nMeeka smiled at their little conversation as in her heart now knew Ion was going to be fine, but her smile quickly turned to a stern look on her face. She walked closer to them, scolded them both for being reckless and foolish at their decisions. Zephyr froze in shock but Ion quietly told her that they would make better decisions in the future. Ion and Zephyr got to spend some more time together before Zephyr and Meeka left Ion alone to get some more rest. Zephyr broke down again after seeing Ion in the state he was in with Meeka providing the shoulder to cry on. She kept telling him to be strong to help Ion get through this, before taking Zephyr back home, where he could continue to recover himself. Through out the next couple of months, Ion went through several surgeries, to fully repair all his insides, from his ribs and lung to his stomach and bowels, with Meeka making sure not to put Ion through too much trauma at once as she was worried about the condition of his heart after he went into cardiac arrest during the emergency surgery, but has been fine ever since. Ion also passed all of his brain scan and mental tests, providing Meeka with the assurance that his brain received no injuries from when his heart stopped.\n\nWith Zephyr by his side all the way through, it took Ion just over a year to fully recover from all his surgeries and injuries. Wanting to get back as normal of a life as possable, Ion went to see his younger cousin, Meeka's little brother, who was a bionics and mechanical limb technologist and after talking to him for a while, wanted to undergo the procedure to have a mechanical arm grafted to him, to replace his missing left arm. Meeka at first said no to Ion's request, as it would put too much stress on Ion's heart, as to power the mechanical limb, a device would have to be grafted to his aorta, where blood would be pumped through a waterwheel like internal part of the device to generate the power needed to make the arm function. This would require Ion to undergo open heart surgery to have the device implanted and Meeka though this would be too risky to the health of Ion's heart. \n\nHowever though, while Ion was training to get his strength back, he was getting tired too easily and quickly. As he pushed himself more and more, he felt like his heart was skipping beast and was uncomfortable while resting afterwards. Subsequent tests revealed the Ion's heart was damaged a bit from the cardiac arrest episode during his emergency surgery and he was diagnosed with irregular heart beat. Ion was then told that for the moment he could no longer push his body like he wanted to, to get back his abilities and was required to have a pacemaker be installed on his heart in order for him to get clearance to go back to Hunting. Knowing now the Ion needed open heart surgery anyways, Meeka gave Ion a compromise, where she would let him have the device implanted on his aorta, as long as the device could also at as a pacemaker for him. Knowing that this still might put more unwanted stress on his heart, Meeka knew Ion was determined to go back to Hunting, even though she didn't want him to and getting his limb back would be beneficial to make sure Ion had all he needed to not get seriously injured again. She deemed the risk to his heart was a lot lower than the risk to his life if he only had the use of one arm instead of two out on his Contracts. Ion happily agreed to Meeka's conditions and Matias (Meeka's little brother) was able to reconfigure the device into a working pacemaker the could help Ion's heart keep it's beats normalized while also providing the power needed to his new mechanical arm. Ion nervously and anxiously prepared for the day where his surgery would take place, where he could live a somewhat normal life again and regain what he had lost..... \n~\n\nReally love this commission, as it was able to fully show the extent and seriousness of Ion's injury and just how lucky he was to survive and just how skilled Meeka is to make sure Ion survived it\n\nStory continues here: https://inkbunny.net/s/2112364\n\n",

With Ion&#039;s abdomen taken care of, Meeka stitched up and stapled closed the large incision down the side of his chest/belly, still leaving his chest incision between his ribs open as they finished up the surgery, just in case Ion&#039;s heart needed immediate attention again as it was still beating at a low rate and on the line of stopping again. <br /><br />Meeka next set her attention on Ion&#039;s severed arm, removing the clamps and stitching closed all the broken blood vessels untill the bleeding stopped. After grinding down his splintered bone to smooth it out, as the break was not clean, she stitched closed the flesh around it, to give Ion a clean stump. Meeka then wrapped Ion&#039; stump in bandages and then focused on his shoulder gash. Stitching closed the broken blood vessels and muscle tissues there, she thoroughly cleaned the wound to prevent any future infection before stitching and stapling the fur closed, finally fixing another one of Ion&#039;s injuries.&nbsp;&nbsp;<br /><br />The final thing to take care of was the large gash over Ion&#039;s nose, Meeka tried stitching it together many times but they kept coming undone as the wound would not bond together and close. Thinking quickly Meeka grabbed a small medical plate and bent it in the shape of Ion&#039;s snout. After applying stitched again, Meeka got one of her assistants to hold the wound closed so the stitches would not come undone, as she quickly applied the plate over them and using screws and pins, was able to graft the plate over Ion&#039;s nose, which finally kept the gash closed. <br /><br />Now knowing Ion was not in anymore immediate danger, Meeka finally stitched closed Ion&#039;s chest incision between his ribs, continuing to watch Ion&#039;s heart beat away until it could not be scene anymore with the final stitch fully closing the incision. After applying some surgical staples to keep the incision closed, Meeka placed her hand on his chest, to physically feel his beating heart underneath his chest structures, giving her the physical assurance she needed, that he was still alive, even though the ECG was beeping to it rhythm in the background. Ion was taken off the operating table and placed on a gurney to be brought to the ICU where he would be monitored 24/7 to make sure he was still fine&nbsp;&nbsp;and any medical attention he needed could be administered immediately. Tired, Meeka when to the changing room to remove her bloodied scrubs as she almost broke down at the though of almost loosing a member of her family. Wiping away some tears, she knew she had one more duty to do before she could finally head home for the night. <br /><br />She when to see Ion&#039;s best friend and partner Zephyr as he was admitted to the hospital himself with hyperventilation from the stress of seeing his friend get seriously injured. Zephyr had an IV inserted in him, giving him some stress relieving medication as he had passed out from all furry of the events that he had to witness. Sitting down beside him, Meeka gently woke him up and as his eyes open and reality was brought back to him, the first thing Zephyr wanted to know was Ion&#039;s condition. Meeka then got Zephyr&#039;s release form the hospital and took him back to his and Ion&#039;s home where she stayed by his side and looked after him for the night, as she could still see he was stressed out and his mind was not all there at the moment. <br /><br />Meeka made sure Zephyr got at least some sleep that night, before bringing him back to the hospital the next morning, to visit Ion. Zephyr and Meeka were glad to learn that Ion had shown some improvement over night, especially with his heart rate and blood pressure back in normal range and that he was coherent, but he was still very weak. Zephyr visibly nervous about walking into Ion&#039;s hospital room, not knowing what to expect, calmed down a bit when he finally got to see Ion, though he was still sleeping. Zephyr felt a small sorrow when he got closer and saw that Ions had an oxygen mask on to help him breathe, all the scars running down his body and looking at the bandaged stump where his left arm used to be. Pulling up a chair and sitting down beside Ion, Zephyr grabbed Ion&#039;s right hand and held it close as Ion began to wake up. <br /><br />Opening his eyes and seeing Zephyr there beside him, Ion cracked a small smile as his breathing was hard and raspy. Zephyr could only muster &quot;i&#039;m sorry&quot; over and over again as he tried to hold back tears but couldn&#039;t. Ion breathing continued to be heavy as he was in a bit of pain, slowly told him it wan&#039;s his fault. Zephyr countered back saying that if he didn&#039;t insist on taking a high level contract, Ion wouldn&#039;t be in this situation. But slowly, Ion countered back, saying that he accepted it as well with all the risks that came with it. Zephyr then countered that the blow was meant for him and that Ion should not have gotten in the way. Ion slowly countered back, saying that if he didn&#039;t jump in and deflect the attack, that Zephyr would be dead, as for him the attack would have been a death blow. Ion then looked at the stump on his left arm told him that him jumping in only cost him is arm and was worth it to save Zephyr&#039;s life. Zephyr couldn&#039;t hold back anymore as he clutched Ion&#039;s hand harder and started full on crying. Ion could only crack a small smile again as the pain was starting to get to him, even with painkillers running down his IV.<br /><br />Meeka smiled at their little conversation as in her heart now knew Ion was going to be fine, but her smile quickly turned to a stern look on her face. Ion also passed all of his brain scan and mental tests, providing Meeka with the assurance that his brain received no injuries from when his heart stopped.<br /><br />With Zephyr by his side all the way through, it took Ion just over a year to fully recover from all his surgeries and injuries. Wanting to get back as normal of a life as possable, Ion went to see his younger cousin, Meeka&#039;s little brother, who was a bionics and mechanical limb technologist and after talking to him for a while, wanted to undergo the procedure to have a mechanical arm grafted to him, to replace his missing left arm. Meeka at first said no to Ion&#039;s request, as it would put too much stress on Ion&#039;s heart, as to power the mechanical limb, a device would have to be grafted to his aorta, where blood would be pumped through a waterwheel like internal part of the device to generate the power needed to make the arm function. This would require Ion to undergo open heart surgery to have the device implanted and Meeka though this would be too risky to the health of Ion&#039;s heart. <br /><br />However though, while Ion was training to get his strength back, he was getting tired too easily and quickly. As he pushed himself more and more, he felt like his heart was skipping beast and was uncomfortable while resting afterwards. Subsequent tests revealed the Ion&#039;s heart was damaged a bit from the cardiac arrest episode during his emergency surgery and he was diagnosed with irregular heart beat. Knowing that this still might put more unwanted stress on his heart, Meeka knew Ion was determined to go back to Hunting, even though she didn&#039;t want him to and getting his limb back would be beneficial to make sure Ion had all he needed to not get seriously injured again. She deemed the risk to his heart was a lot lower than the risk to his life if he only had the use of one arm instead of two out on his Contracts. Ion happily agreed to Meeka&#039;s conditions and Matias (Meeka&#039;s little brother) was able to reconfigure the device into a working pacemaker the could help Ion&#039;s heart keep it&#039;s beats normalized while also providing the power needed to his new mechanical arm. Ion nervously and anxiously prepared for the day where his surgery would take place, where he could live a somewhat normal life again and regain what he had lost..... <br />~<br /><br />Really love this commission, as it was able to fully show the extent and seriousness of Ion&#039;s injury and just how lucky he was to survive and just how skilled Meeka is to make sure Ion survived it<br /><br />Story continues here: <a href=\"https://inkbunny.net/s/2112364\" rel=\"nofollow\">https://inkbunny.net/s/2112364</a><br /><br /></span>",
