"description": "*Update 01/03/2020: I added 2 more panel showing the closure of the musculature and the sternum (with closure plates as I thought it would be cooler than wires so flavor text has been updated as well to depict that). This also gives me the main part of the surgery as the central image again which is what I wanted\n\nAn improved version of my Routine Maintenance submission, I wanted to add more panels showing more of Ion's surgery, including exposing the sternum and just after the sternum is cut but before the retractors pull open the chest. As with the Emergency Maintenance submission I improved the line work and details, it only made sense to redo this one instead of adding the 2 extra panels to the original submission\n\nThe story is the same where Ion is nervously awaiting going under the knife. Ion has a mechanical arm that is powered by a device that stores energy from his heart beating and the device is malfunctioning, so the only way to repair it is to undergo open heart surgery to either repair or replace the device. His extra chest fur is shaved a bit so it doesn't get in the way, he does have an older heart surgery scar under there from when the device was implanted. Ion does get very nervous at the beginning of any surgery he undergoes, with his heart rate and blood pressure spiking, but Meeka can usually calm him down. He is put under and a large incision is made into his chest eventually revealing his sternum. His sternum is then sawed open to gain access to his heart. Ion has his pericardial sac (the membrane around the heart) removed when the device was first implanted because it wouldn't reseal with the device under the heart, so when you get this far, his heart is easily accessed. Ion's heart is pulled up a bit to reveal the device and it is either repaired or replaced, which is not too hard, just have to unhook the wires from the old one and attach them to the new one. Then the device is slid carefully back behind the heart and the heart is slowly lowered back into the chest. Luckily for Ion this can be done while the heart is still beating, so he doesn't have to be put on the bypass machine, helping to speed up his recovery. His sternum is then closed shut with special plates and the wound is stitched up as Ion comes out of his deep slumber. He will then be placed in intensive care for a few day to make sure there are no complications.\n\nI tried to find a way to show the device and it's wires but it got too messy and they are all under the heart anyways so from this angle they are mostly unseen. I was more focused on the chest structure, the heart and other chest organs as they were fun to draw\n\nI am going to keep the original Routine Maintenance on my profile since it is the first digital art I ever did but it will now be in my scraps",
