"writing": "Jonestown Tea, Director’s Cut\nCup Two\n\n\n“How are you today?” The male horse asked Lilly as she walked into the room and took her place on the sofa, the opossum avoiding all eye contact at this point.\n\n“Do you really want me to answer that?” The preteen opossum said with a little shrug. “About like yesterday, tired and ready to go back to the orphanage.” \n\n“So, as you know I was there when all of that happened yesterday.” Darwin started out, looking up from his clipboard that he had. “And, well I think that we need to talk about that.”\n\n“Oh… That? I kinda freaked out.” Lilly said shaking her head a little, “it’s like I told Ms. Camilla, it was the smell of her perfume and that, well brought up a lot of memories and I didn’t want them and well I kinda ran like hell.”\n\n“Camilla was telling me about that, you can be full of vinegar when you’re cornered.” Darwin said glancing down to his clipboard and then back at the opossum who was now laying on her back and looking up at the ceiling again. “And not to mention what happened with the male nurse that tried to help.”\n\n“Well, when you’re worked up into a frenzy, and someone grabs you like that, oh and don’t forget the whole opossum thing, that kind of thing happens.” She said doing her best to shrug it off.\n\n“Well I’m a little more worried about the fact that you did bite that nurse, and fairly hard at that. It could have been the shock of him grabbing you combined with the panic, but I think that there is a little more to it.”\n\n“What else could it be? I had a flashback, ran around in a panic, got grabbed by someone, bit them and did what opossums do.” Lilly said glancing over to the horse.\n\n“When it comes to ‘doing what opossums do’, I would have thought that the panicking itself would have been what would have made you pass out. Like I said, I think that there is something more to it, something a little deeper that scared you.” He said leaning in a little. “Tell me, when all of this was happening, were you afraid of your father? I know that might sound like a dumb thing to ask.”\n\n“Well… At first, when they would ‘talk’, I think that I was more worried than afraid of him or anything. I was worried that all of the ‘talking’ was something that I caused. Though… That did start changing.” She said shivering a little.\n\n“You know that you can tell me anything.” Darwin said warmly.\n\n“No daddy, don’t… No daddy, don’t.”\n\n“I remember… How I started to hate coming home from school. I would do most anything that I could do to try and stay there as long as I could, I would look for groups, after school things, anything.” Lilly said studying the ceiling. “It seems a little weird, me wanting to stay at school when all the other kids would rush to go home and be with their families, you would have thought that, that would have raised a flag or something… But no, the cries for help never got answered or noticed.” She said with a little shrug, “but I remember… It was…” Lilly paused a moment or two, rubbing the bridge of her muzzle in thought. “It was a few months after school started… November I think, cause it was right around Thanksgiving, cause of all the little paw print turkeys that the younger cubs would make. I got into the car, and like clockwork, mom asked me how my day was. For some reason, that was the day that I had finally worked up the courage to ask her again.”\n\n“About her and David ‘talking’.” Darwin interrupted, getting a look out of the opossum before she started talking again. \n\n“Oh, it was past the point of ‘talking’, this was full out arguing and fighting by anyone’s definition.” She said shaking her head a little, before taking a deep breath. “I remember seeing a new bruise on her arm, a lack of fur on your arm makes hiding things like that hard.” She said looking at the bandages on her arms. “The sight of it was enough to push me over the edge and asked her, and like always, she told me that it was something that she had done, something about her being a klutz or something like that, but… Deep down, I knew better than that. One night, I could hear them ‘talking’... No, this was screaming… I wanted to see what was happening, if that one time that I saw him raising his hand to her was a fluke, I think that was how I managed to talk myself into doing it. Even then, I knew that it was more than talking, and then I seen it, the painful proof, I saw him lifting his hand and slapping my mom, and there wasn’t anything gentle about it… Or the ones that came after that.” Lilly said her, her voice shaking as she saw Darwin offering her a tissue out of the corner of her teary eyes, taking it and drying her eyes.\n\n“I’m sorry.” He said softly, “that’s something that no one should have to see or go through for that matter. If you need a moment, or want to talk about something else, you can.”\n\n“There’s no reason to say sorry, it’s not going to do anything. And I’m this far in, I might as well keep it rolling.” She said taking another deep breath. “But like I said, I asked her on the way home that day and she came up with some excuse that I don’t even remember. That’s when I told her what I saw that night, and she told me that it was just a bad dream, and god do I wish that was the case, and I tried telling myself that, but… it was the night that I really started fearing him.”\n\n“Lilly, I know that this is a lot to talk about, and I know that it hurts, you don’t have to push yourself.” Darwin said, offering her a little respite from the story that she was telling.\n\n“You said it yourself, that this kinda thing is better out than in.” She said going silent for a few moments, trying to get the words right and keep composed. “We got home, and things seemed calm, I went off to get started on the little bit of homework that I had, and mom went off to get dinner going… Jesus, I remember laying there on the floor working on my homework, math I think and not hearing mom and him fighting, it was… It was like the best thing in the world after all the stuff that had been happening, but something in my mind told me that it wouldn’t last. Mom called me into the dining room for dinner, and I remember, she cooked a roast and it was just me and her at the table… He wasn’t there, he was off at the bar, or as mom would tell me, he was working late. We sat there eating, hardly talking past a little about school and some of the clubs that I joined.” Lilly said sitting up and looking down at the tissue in her hand, rubbing it between her fingers, doing most anything that she could to try and not think about the horror that she was relating. \n\n“After dinner, I went back to my room to kill time before bedtime, laying on the floor, drawing or something, I think that I might have been reading a book or something before mom came in and told me that it was time for bed. Got ready and then tucked in, again, without him there things were so peaceful and nice, I didn’t have to lay there with my head under a pillow trying to block out the voices and fall asleep.” She said starting to draw up into a ball, knees to her chest. “I was woke up to the sound of someone hammering on the door, to the point that I thought that someone was going to break in… It turns out it was him, and well things went from zero to one hundred.” She said starting to bite her lower lip, “he came home, drunk, to the point that I could smell him when I came into the living room when I heard them fighting. I don’t know where I pulled the courage from, but I said something when I saw him hitting her… He stopped, turning to glaring at me with pure, burning hate… Glaring at me with his hand raised, saying something about how I wasn’t any better than my mom, that I would get my ass whooped if I didn’t get back to bed… And that’s where I went, hiding under the covers, shivering and shaking… That was also the first time that I can remember pulling an opossum and passing out from the fear and panic.”\n\n“Lilly… It’s ok sweetie… You can stop here if you want to, there is no need to push yourself. We can talk about something else, or just take a break.” Darwin chimed in, wanting to reach out and comfort the opossum somehow, remembering the reaction from the other day. “Or we can just sit here and listen to music.” He said making a few notes.\n\n“I… I think that would be good.” Lilly said, nearly curling into a ball at this point.\n\n“We could talk about some nicer things, maybe some things that you liked to do in school, or maybe something that you would like to do, other than just sleeping forever.” The horse said leaning in a little.\n\nLilly sat there for a few moments, silent save for a little whimper or sob, before she seemed to get a little better control of herself. “Well in school, I did anything that I could to stay there longer, but you knew that. I tried like every club that I could find, chess was pretty fun, some of them, like AV club stuff was nice… But none of it seemed to stick.” She said, going silent for a moment, thinking.\n\n“Was there something that you and your mom liked to do before she passed? I’m sure that you had some kind of dream before all of this happened.” Darwin said, scribbling something down.\n\n“Just the ones that every little girl ever had, you know, just getting to grow up, go through school, have a family later… That sounds cliche, but then again, I’m not going to get it, and I have no idea what I even want to be or do if I live to that age.” Lilly said with a shrug, “maybe I will just go with the wind, just me that way I don’t have to worry about losing them.”\n\n“Didn’t you say something about liking to draw or color? Maybe you would like something creative. I mean just think of all the jobs that you could have. You could draw cartoons and things, illustrate books, or you could help companies make their logos.” The horse said, offering her a few things to think about.\n\n“That was just a hobby, something that I did to kill time. I don’t think that I would like doing it for a living.” She paused again, shivering a little. “I know what I want… Well two things that I want cause I don’t think that I will get the one of them. I think that I would really like to be to be a photographer.”\n\n“Well you have something more to live for than you think, and I’m sure that you know that it would make your mother proud.” He said offering a warm smile to the opossum, “but I would like to ask what the other thing is.”\n\n“Well… I want… Wanted to be a mother like momma.” She said softly, in a near whisper, blushing just a little as she saw Darwin writing some more notes. “But I don’t think… I know that I couldn’t do it without her around to help me.” Her voice faltering more, threatening to break into sobs at any moment. “I mean… I don’t even think that I could do… That.” She said, shivering at some memory or thought that ran through her head.\n\n“That’s the thing about being a mother or father. It’s not something that you know from the start. Trust me, my wife and I have been going through it.” He said with a snicker, “but yes, having someone around to help is a great resource, but I’m sure that you would live up to your mother and make her proud… Deep down I know that you will make an amazing mother when the time comes.”\n\n“I… I feel like you have to say that kind of thing.” Lilly said shaking her head a little before letting out a sigh, seeming to have changed emotion in a flash. “I don’t think that I’m any kind of skill or ability to be a mother… I told you that I’m just a big mistake… All of this has even happened… She’s dead, and if I said something or done something more, things wouldn’t turn out like this.”\n\n“Lilly, I’m telling you that you’re not a mistake… And nothing of this is your fault, even then, there is only so much that can be done, and sad to say, getting anything done takes time, and sometimes it takes too much time.”\n\n\"Momma.\"\n\"Are the aliens coming to take us away? (Momma?)\"\n\"Is Armageddon going to happen again today?\"\n\n“I am… I don’t know why you don’t believe it, I mean look what happened.” She said turning and planting her feet on the tiled floor. “He told me time and time again, that story of his, the story of what ‘really’ happened that day. I knew that he was lying.”\n\n“Lilly is this about you talking to him about what David said to you that night that you saw him hitting your mother?” Darwin asked, starting to scribble some more note. “If you’re not ready to talk more about it, you don’t have to, I know how hard something like that can be.”\n\n“No. I could never bring myself to say something to him about that night, I was to scared that he would do something to me, I mean I didn’t know what he was capable of doing to me. In my mind, something told me that if I said something to him or stood up to him again, that something worse than getting my ass whooped would have happened to me.” The opossum said shivering, “then again, those things happened too.”\n\n“You know that you can talk about anything that you feel that you’re ready to, it’s all between you and I.” Darwin said, offering her another tissue, seeing that another tear had started rolling down the opossum’s cheek.\n\n“You tell me that, then again… There’s no one to tell that would help, or care at this point. Mom’s dead, he’s dead, I still think that I should be.”\n\n“You know better than that Lilly, I care for you, Amanda cares and worries about you… Ask her about the nurse that she knocked over when she can rushing into the ER with you… And then there’s your friends at the orphanage. So no matter what, don’t think that there isn’t anyone that cares for you.”\n\n“So you say.” She said taking a deep breath. “I remember that day… And the night before… They fought, harder than normal from the sounds of it… I hated having to listen to them, him calling her every name under the sun, telling her that she wasn’t nothing more than a fuck up, trash and how he wished that he had never got tangled up with her, even something about how all of this was her fault. She said something to him, a moment of quiet… And then I could hear her yelling, begging for him to stop hitting her, that she was sorry.” The opossum said snatching the tissue from the male. “I should have known that shit was about to hit the fan… Well a lot sooner than I thought that it was.” She said taking a moment to try center herself. \n\n“Lilly if you’re not ready for this, you don’t have to push yourself. I mean you have talked about a lot today, you’ve been doing so well the past few days.” Darwin said, making a few more notes before looking back to the opossum.\n\n“I know. I might as well keep it going and see if you’re right about this getting it off my chest.” She said shaking her head a little, before curling up. “Like I said, they fought… They fought hard… I remember that morning, it was oddly peaceful after the way things happened the night before… David had passed out at some point… So getting ready for school that morning was normal for the lack of a better word… Mom woke me, I got ready, we ate, and then we were off to school. I thought that things might be getting a little better, the school day was going nice, I got to see my friends… But then…” Tears had formed in the corners of her ears, starting to pour down her cheeks. “I got the call… The classroom phone rang, and as the teacher was getting up to go answer it, we were all taking bets and making guess as to what it was, who might be in trouble and then the teacher told me it was for me.”\n\n“Lilly, I think I know where this is going, and you don’t have to talk about this. I know how fresh this is.” The horse said, catching her glance form the opossum.\n\n“I remember getting to the office, and he was there… I couldn’t tell if he was scared, worried, or what. He was there talking to one of the people in the office, and there was just something about the sight of him being there made me shiver, and something else made me feel sick and I didn’t know why. I wanted to turn around and leave, but he saw me and rushed over to me, wrapping his arms around me. I should have felt safe there, but I didn’t, I only felt more sick, more scared.” She said, putting the tissue to work, trying to stop and dry the flood of tears. “He told me something happened, that something had happened to mom. That… That she died… That someone broke in and killed her in a robbery gone wrong… I knew that he was lying.”\n\n“Lilly, why do you think that?” Darwin asked, hoping that he had worded that right, “I know that the police were looking into a few things before what happened most recently.”\n\n“Ju… Just the story that he told… The way that he told it… The lack of emotion when he told me.” She said, reaching out and taking another tissue. “I remember us walking out to the car and getting in, that’s when he started telling me what happened… In such a dead pan tone… He had went to work, and later decided to come home for lunch, and that’s when he found her… Killed, a shattered window… But… It was a lie… There was nothing missing… Nothing at all, and I know that if someone did something like that, they would have stolen something.”\n\n“Lilly, I’m sorry.” Darwin said, starting to open his muzzle to say something else, only to be cut off by Lilly again.\n\n“I know that he did it… Now do you see why it’s my fault. I could do anything to show people that he needed to be stopped, that something needed to be done a lot sooner… Do you see why it’s my fault?” She said hissing out a little. “I wish that I could have at least proven that he had done it before all the other stuff happened… But now… He’s dead, and he nearly killed me too.”\n\n“Lilly, it’s like I said, it’s not your fault that this happened. I've said it before, but it’s sad that dealing with things like this take time and sometimes to much time… But… There is a upside, you’re alive, and yes, you might not think that he got justice, but I assure you, that he will… I’m sure that you learned in church, that he will have to stand before God and be judged, and if he did it, then he will have to deal with it.” The horse said, doing his best to make her feel better in some way.\n\n“Darwin… I don’t know if I believe in that kinda thing anymore… But… Thank you.” She said in a near whisper, letting out a little squeak as she heard a little alarm tone going off.\n\n“You’re more than welcome, it’s my job to do all that I can to help you to feel better.” He said, reaching over to turn off the alarm. “Looks like times up for the day… I’m sure that you’re ready to get back to your room, and get a little rest, you made a lot of progress.” He said, a knocking at the door, Camilla poking her head into the room.\n\n“Thank you.” Lilly whispered again before getting up and heading out with her nurse and off to her room.\n\n-- OCT. 19th. Sat. --\n\nIt was a saturday, the one day that Lilly didn’t have to go see Darwin at some point, but this meant that she was stuck in her room or in the common room with the others, and the way things seemed to go in there, she’d rather stick to laying around her room. At least she thought that she would get to lay around, until there was a knocking on her door, her nurse getting up to answer it.\n\n“Is there something wrong? I didn’t think that Lilly had an appointment today.” Camilla said, tilting her head a little.\n\n“Oh no, there’s nothing wrong.” The horse said stepping into the room, a folder in his hand and a rat woman standing behind him. “I have good news actually. Lilly, you’re going to be going back to the orphanage.”\n\n“What?” The opossum asked, sitting up a little, tilting her head too. “Finally…”\n\n“From all the progress that you have made in the past few days, I think that you’re good to go back, but the workers will be keeping an eye on you, and you will be coming back here to talk to me at least once a week.” Darwin said opening the folder and scribbling something in it before handing it to the rat woman.\n\n“You say that like it’s something that they don’t do.” The opossum said rolling her eyes a little as she got out of the little cot that was in her room and starting to gather up the few bits of clothes that Amanda had brought her during her stay.\n\n“Well we’re going to be looking a little closer now.” Amanda said walking over to the opossum, arms open for a hug. “I don’t want you to do that again, you scared the daylights out of us.”\n\n“Yeah… What’s this about you taking down a nurse?” Lilly asked with a little snicker as she leaned into the hug, purring ever so softly.\n\n“Well it looks like you’re all set to go.” Darwin said, offering Amanda the folder. “There are a few things in there that you might want to give a read… There is also a prescription for some antibiotic ointment and care info for Lilly’s stitches.” He said turning and looking to the opossum. “Make sure you take care of that. I want to see you back here, but under better circumstances.” He said holding out his hand.\n\n“Sounds fair.” Lilly said taking and giving Darwin’s paw a shake. “See you later.” She said as she turned to Camilla. “And… I’m sorry.” She said offering a hug to the bear, letting out a little squeak as she felt her giving her a warm hug.\n\n“It’s ok sweetie. I know that you weren’t yourself, it happens to the best of us, but I want you to do something for me.” She said getting down on one knee and looking Lilly in the eyes. “I want you to take care of yourself… Something tells me that with all of the adoptions that I’ve heard about from Amanda, that things will be getting better for you in just a little while.” She said giving the opossum a knowing wink.\n\n“Well, let’s get you back to the orphanage, your roommate has been worried about you.” Amanda said giving a nod to the other two before her and Lilly started out of the room, making their way through the hospital and out the front. “But yeah… I kinda knocked over a nurse… I came rushing through the door as the poor guy was coming out and knocked him on his butt.”\n\n“It’s weird to think that you can do that… I mean, no offense, but you’re kinda scrawny.” Lilly said with a little giggle as they got to the van and started getting in. The drive from the hospital to the orphanage was a tame one, the two talking a little, talking about the things that Lilly missed while she was gone, things that changed, the record number of adoptions that had been happening and the fact that there were a good number more to come.\n\nOnce the pair got back to the orphanage, Lilly and Amanda got out and made their way into the house, the wind having picked up a little, bringing in the cool air of the fall. Amanda more or less ushering Lilly off to see her roommate and the friends that she had there, letting her know that they had been worried about her. The rat had a lot to look over in the paperwork that Darwin had given her, having stolen a glance at it on the way home.\n\nLilly had made it to her shared room without running into anyone, and in most cases this was a good thing, it meant less that she had to deal with. She tapped on the door before opening it and starting to step in. She was half hoping that her roommate was off doing something so that she could have a little of time alone to think about what she was going to tell her and all that, but she wasn’t that lucky.\n\n“Lilly!” A voice called out from one of the beds. “I swear to God. You scared the hell out of me.” The bull terrier said shaking her head a little as she got up and walked over to the smaller opossum. “It’s a good thing that I had to pee when I did…” She said wrapping her arms around the opossum.\n\n“I know… I guess this is the one time that I’m happy to have someone walk into the bathroom on me like that.” Lilly said bringing her arms up to hug the canine. “Thank you, Lola.” She said in a near whisper as they broke the hug and walked over to their beds, flopping onto them. \n\n“Don’t worry about it, I’m just happy that you’re ok and that you’re back with us.” Lola said as she laid back on her bed, her legs hanging off the edge. “And I’m sure that if had been you know who and things were a little different, you wouldn’t be complaining about someone walking in on you in the bathroom.”\n\n“You shut up.” Lilly said sitting up, blush clinging to her cheeks as she tossed a pillow at her roommate. “I told you, that was all a dream that you had.” She said picking up her other pillow and holding onto it. “And even if I did like them… I’m sure that once he hears what I did, he will be like everyone else and just avoid me like the plague…. Or worse.”\n\n“Well about that…” Lola said sitting up and tossing the pillow back onto Lilly’s bed. “He actually asked about you… I think that he might have been worried about out.” She said shrugging a little. “I still think that you really need to talk to him about how you feel, I think that he might feel the same way that you do, and even if he doesn’t what could it hurt?”\n\n“It could hurt a lot of things, I can promise you that.” Lilly said holding onto her pillow a little tighter. “I mean what if he only likes me as a friend or something like that… Or what if something doesn’t work out.” She paused for a moment, “and even then, why would someone like him, someone that high up on the food chain want someone like me. That kinda thing doesn’t happen outside of them using someone like me to get revenge on someone that they were dating, or something even worse.” Lilly said, letting her mind wonder to all of the bad places that something like this could go.”\n\n“All of those things are something that could happen, but they could happen to anyone at anytime, not just you.” Lola said getting up and moving over to the opossum’s bed and sitting with her. “I don’t think that any of that is going to happen, I mean when he came up to me and asked me about where you were, he seemed worried about you not being at school. So I think that it’s safe to say that he has some kind of positive feelings for you.”\n\n“So I have to ask, what kind of rumors are going around the school about why I’m not there?” Lilly asked, changing the subject or fishing for more info before deciding on what she was going to do in terms of talking to him.\n\n“The only thing that I have heard that was going around is that you were really sick, that’s about all, I haven’t heard anyone talking about what happened or anything like that, so I think that everyone is in the dark on the whole you trying to kill yourself… So I think that you can get away with just telling people that you were really sick and just going with it.” She paused for a few moments to think, before starting to smile. “You know, I can help you out with your shyness.”\n\n“You’re planning something and I don’t know if I should be worried or happy.” Lilly said shaking her head a little at the thoughts of all the things that the bull terrier could be planning to use to help her. “So what are you planning?”\n\n\n“Well it might sound a little childish, but you know that you could write him a little note and slip it into his locker, you know, just something a little simple, telling him how you feel and asking him if he feels the same, or how he feels.” Lola said smiling and getting up to walk over to the desk that was against the wall and picking up a notebook and pen. “I will help you write it.” \n\n“I really don’t like the idea of doing something like that, I mean there is a lot of things that can go wrong with something like that.” She said shaking her head a little. “I mean what if you or I put it in the wrong locker? Someone would have that and they could use that to tease me or start all kinds of rumors… Or we could get the right locker, and well he could hate the idea of the note and me and he could use it as blackmail or show it around the school and get all kinds of rumors going too.” \n\n“Well I can tell you that it’s not going to end up in the wrong locker… I know what locker is his, and before you ask, I know what locker is his cause his is right next to mine.” She said shaking her head a little. “That’s where he stopped me and got to asking me about you. And as for the rumors and all that. I don’t think that anything like that is going to happen, I have a good feeling about this.” She said turning to a black page in the notebook and handing it to Lilly. \n\nThe pair spent the better part of the rest of the day talking and planning out just what she wanted the note to say, not to mention finally getting around to writing it folded just right. Even after the two finished and folded the note, there was several times that Lilly had to open the note to re-read something, check something, even redo something completely, she this to the point that the not had gotten written over at least once or twice more by Sunday. \n\nSunday morning was a little slow, a lot like it was any other Sunday morning, most of the younger kids or the ones that wanted to would go off to Church and Sunday school with the workers, a little something to help brighten their week. Lilly and Lola on the other hand, didn’t go, the pair like getting their two days a week to sleep in and not having to worry about doing any real thinking or anything like that.\n\nIt was mid-day or so, the workers and kids that went were still at church, so it couldn’t have been too late in the day when Lilly started waking up. Following her normal routine of rolling around in her bed, trying to find a spot that was just right so that she could try to fall back asleep, but this was one of the times that her thrust and other bodily functions won the war against bed gravity, to the point that she got up, stretched and scooped up her PJs. For the most part, the kids got to wear most anything that they wanted to as long as it was something decent, meaning that a lot of them opted into wearing loose, comfortable clothes when they could over walking around in street clothes.\n\nLilly went to open her muzzle to ask Lola something, but stopped at the sight of the bull terrier sleeping, clinging to the stuffed animal that she had gotten earlier in the year as a birthday gift, the sight caused Lilly to smile a little before turning and heading off to the cramped bathroom that the two shared and then she was off on her main mission.\n\n“Well would you look at that.” A voice spoke up, causing the opossum to snap out of her own little world and look around, cringing at the sight and sound of the voice once it hit her, who it belonged to. “It looks like I was wrong about you not making it back.”\n\n“Well fuck you too for the vote of confidence.” Lilly said shaking her head at the cow girl that was standing there. “I mean, with people like you around here, I’m sure you could see why I would do something like that.” She said glaring at her, for the most part, Bessie was Lilly’s rival, even a bully to a point. The cow was only a year or so older, but thanks to Lilly being a runt, she was easily bigger and wider than she was, maybe even meaner than the opossum.\n\n“Really? Is that the best that you can come up with?” Bessie asked, shaking her head a little. “I’m guessing all that blood loss made you even stupider.”\n\n“No, it’s more that I wanted to go for something a little different, something other than all of the same fat jokes with a slightly different spin on them… You something that’s topical and a bit on the smart side… Then again with it being a smart insult I think that it might go over your head.”\n\nThe cow female didn’t say anything for a moment before shaking her head a little. “I’m not stupid.” She said taking a step closer to the opossum. “I might be a lot of things, but at least I’m not some broken, suicidal, runt bitch that thinks she’s a lot bigger than she is, oh and lets not forget the fact that people like me unlike you.”\n\n“Whatever helps your fat ass sleep at night.” Lilly said shaking her head a little, letting out a squeak as she seen and felt Bessie pressing herself against her. “Oh… DId I hit a nerve or something? Or did you just use all of your brains and now you have to solve things by hitting them?” She asked, pushing the cow away, with the strength that she could muster.\n\nBessie went to open her muzzle to say something, only to get cut off. “I don’t know what's happening here, but you two break it up and stay away from one another.” One of the female ward workers said, looking at the two, “now get to wherever you were going.” She said watching the two shoot one another a nasty look before they took off walking down the hall in different directions.\n\n",

remember. That’s when I told her what I saw that night, and she told me that it was just a bad dream, and god do I wish that was the case, and I tried telling myself that, but… little bit of homework that I had, and mom went off to get dinner going… Jesus, I remember laying there on the floor working on my homework, math I think and not hearing mom and him fighting, it was… It was like the best thing in the world after all the stuff that had been happening, but something in my mind told me that it wouldn’t last.

“After dinner, I went back to my room to kill time before bedtime, laying on the floor, drawing or something, I think that I might have been reading a book or something before mom came in and told me that it was time for bed. I don’t know where I pulled the courage from, but I said something when I saw him hitting her… He stopped, turning to glaring at me with pure, burning hate… Glaring at me with his hand raised, saying something about how I wasn’t any better than my mom, that I would get my ass whooped if I didn’t get back to bed… And that’s where I went, hiding under the covers, shivering and shaking… That was also the first time that I can remember pulling an opossum and passing out from the fear and panic.”

“Lilly… It’s ok sweetie… You can stop here if you want to, there is no need to push yourself. We can talk about something else, or just take a break.” Darwin chimed in, wanting to reach out and comfort the opossum somehow, remembering the reaction from the other day. “Or we can just sit here and listen to music.” He said making a few notes.

“I… I think that would be good.” Lilly said, nearly curling into a ball at this point.

“We could talk about some nicer things, maybe some things that you liked to do in school, or maybe something that you would like to do, other than just sleeping forever.” The horse said leaning in a little.

Lilly sat there for a few moments, silent save for a little whimper or sob, before she seemed to get a little better control of herself. “Well in school, I did anything that I could to stay there longer, but you knew that. I tried like every club that I could find, chess was pretty fun, some of them, like AV club stuff was nice… But none of it seemed to stick.” She said, going silent for a moment, thinking.

“Was there something that you and your mom liked to do before she passed? I’m sure that you had some kind of dream before all of this happened.” Darwin said, scribbling something down.

“Just the ones that every little girl ever had, you know, just getting to grow up, go through school, have a family later… That sounds cliche, but then again, I’m not going to get it, and I have no idea what I even want to be or do if I live to that age.” Lilly said with a shrug, “maybe I will just go with the wind, just me that way I don’t have to worry about losing them.”

“Didn’t you say something about liking to draw or color? Maybe you would like something creative. I mean just think of all the jobs that you could have. You could draw cartoons and things, illustrate books, or you could help companies make their logos.” The horse said, offering her a few things to think about.

“That was just a hobby, something that I did to kill time. I don’t think that I would like doing it for a living.” She paused again, shivering a little. “I know what I want… Well two things that I want cause I don’t think that I will get the one of them. I think that I would really like to be to be a photographer.”

“Well you have something more to live for than you think, and I’m sure that you know that it would make your mother proud.” He said offering a warm smile to the opossum, “but I would like to ask what the other thing is.”

“Well… I want… Wanted to be a mother like momma.” She said softly, in a near whisper, blushing just a little as she saw Darwin writing some more notes. “But I don’t think… I know that I couldn’t do it without her around to help me.” Her voice faltering more, threatening to break into sobs at any moment. “I mean… I don’t even think that I could do… That.” She said, shivering at some memory or thought that ran through her head.

“That’s the thing about being a mother or father. It’s not something that you know from the start. Trust me, my wife and I have been going through it.” He said with a snicker, “but yes, having someone around to help is a great resource, but I’m sure that you would live up to your mother and make her proud… Deep down I know that you will make an amazing mother when the time comes.”

“I… I feel like you have to say that kind of thing.” Lilly said shaking her head a little before letting out a sigh, seeming to have changed emotion in a flash. “I don’t think that I’m any kind of skill or ability to be a mother… I told you that I’m just a big mistake… All of this has even happened… She’s dead, and if I said something or done something more, things wouldn’t turn out like this.”

“Lilly, I’m telling you that you’re not a mistake… And nothing of this is your fault, even then, there is only so much that can be done, and sad to say, getting anything done takes time, and sometimes it takes too much time.”

"Momma."
"Are the aliens coming to take us away? (Momma?)"
"Is Armageddon going to happen again today?"

“I am… I don’t know why you don’t believe it, I mean look what happened.” She said turning and planting her feet on the tiled floor. “He told me time and time again, that story of his, the story of what ‘really’ happened that day. I knew that he was lying.”

“Lilly is this about you talking to him about what David said to you that night that you saw him hitting your mother?” Darwin asked, starting to scribble some more note. “If you’re not ready to talk more about it, you don’t have to, I know how hard something like that can be.”

“No. I could never bring myself to say something to him about that night, I was to scared that he would do something to me, I mean I didn’t know what he was capable of doing to me. In my mind, something told me that if I said something to him or stood up to him again, that something worse than getting my ass whooped would have happened to me.” The opossum said shivering, “then again, those things happened too.”

“You know that you can talk about anything that you feel that you’re ready to, it’s all between you and I.” Darwin said, offering her another tissue, seeing that another tear had started rolling down the opossum’s cheek.

“You tell me that, then again… There’s no one to tell that would help, or care at this point. Mom’s dead, he’s dead, I still think that I should be.”

“You know better than that Lilly, I care for you, Amanda cares and worries about you… Ask her about the nurse that she knocked over when she can rushing into the ER with you… And then there’s your friends at the orphanage. So no matter what, don’t think that there isn’t anyone that cares for you.”

“So you say.” She said taking a deep breath.

“Lilly if you’re not ready for this, you don’t have to push yourself. I mean you have talked about a lot today, you’ve been doing so well the past few days.” Darwin said, making a few more notes before looking back to the opossum.

“I know. “I got the call… The classroom phone rang, and as the teacher was getting up to go answer it, we were all taking bets and making guess as to what it was, who might be in trouble and then the teacher told me it was for me.”

“Lilly, I think I know where this is going, and you don’t have to talk about this. I know how fresh this is.” The horse said, catching her glance form the opossum.

“I remember getting to the office, and he was there… I couldn’t tell if he was scared, worried, or what. That… That she died… That someone broke in and killed her in a robbery gone wrong… I knew that he was lying.”

“Lilly, why do you think that?” Darwin asked, hoping that he had worded that right, “I know that the police were looking into a few things before what happened most recently.”

“Ju… Just the story that he told… The way that he told it… The lack of emotion when he told me.” She said, reaching out and taking another tissue. “I remember us walking out to the car and getting in, that’s when he started telling me what happened… In such a dead pan tone… He had went to work, and later decided to come home for lunch, and that’s when he found her… Killed, a shattered window… But… It was a lie… There was nothing missing… Nothing at all, and I know that if someone did something like that, they would have stolen something.”

“Lilly, I’m sorry.” Darwin said, starting to open his muzzle to say something else, only to be cut off by Lilly again.

“I know that he did it… Now do you see why it’s my fault. I could do anything to show people that he needed to be stopped, that something needed to be done a lot sooner… Do you see why it’s my fault?” She said hissing out a little. “I wish that I could have at least proven that he had done it before all the other stuff happened… But now… He’s dead, and he nearly killed me too.”

“Lilly, it’s like I said, it’s not your fault that this happened. I've said it before, but it’s sad that dealing with things like this take time and sometimes to much time… But… There is a upside, you’re alive, and yes, you might not think that he got justice, but I assure you, that he will… I’m sure that you learned in church, that he will have to stand before God and be judged, and if he did it, then he will have to deal with it.” The horse said, doing his best to make her feel better in some way.

“Darwin… I don’t know if I believe in that kinda thing anymore… But… Thank you.” She said in a near whisper, letting out a little squeak as she heard a little alarm tone going off.

“You’re more than welcome, it’s my job to do all that I can to help you to feel better.” He said, reaching over to turn off the alarm. “Looks like times up for the day… I’m sure that you’re ready to get back to your room, and get a little rest, you made a lot of progress.” He said, a knocking at the door, Camilla poking her head into the room.

“Thank you.” Lilly whispered again before getting up and heading out with her nurse and off to her room.

-- OCT. 19th. Sat. --

It was a saturday, the one day that Lilly didn’t have to go see Darwin at some point, but this meant that she was stuck in her room or in the common room with the others, and the way things seemed to go in there, she’d rather stick to laying around her room. At least she thought that she would get to lay around, until there was a knocking on her door, her nurse getting up to answer it.

“Is there something wrong? I didn’t think that Lilly had an appointment today.” Camilla said, tilting her head a little.

“Oh no, there’s nothing wrong.” The horse said stepping into the room, a folder in his hand and a rat woman standing behind him. “I have good news actually. Lilly, you’re going to be going back to the orphanage.”

“What?” The opossum asked, sitting up a little, tilting her head too. “Finally…”

“From all the progress that you have made in the past few days, I think that you’re good to go back, but the workers will be keeping an eye on you, and you will be coming back here to talk to me at least once a week.” Darwin said opening the folder and scribbling something in it before handing it to the rat woman.

“You say that like it’s something that they don’t do.” The opossum said rolling her eyes a little as she got out of the little cot that was in her room and starting to gather up the few bits of clothes that Amanda had brought her during her stay.

“Well we’re going to be looking a little closer now.” Amanda said walking over to the opossum, arms open for a hug. “I don’t want you to do that again, you scared the daylights out of us.”

“Yeah… What’s this about you taking down a nurse?” Lilly asked with a little snicker as she leaned into the hug, purring ever so softly.

“Well it looks like you’re all set to go.” Darwin said, offering Amanda the folder. “There are a few things in there that you might want to give a read… There is also a prescription for some antibiotic ointment and care info for Lilly’s stitches.” He said turning and looking to the opossum. “Make sure you take care of that. I want to see you back here, but under better circumstances.” He said holding out his hand.

“Sounds fair.” Lilly said taking and giving Darwin’s paw a shake. “See you later.” She said as she turned to Camilla. “And… I’m sorry.” She said offering a hug to the bear, letting out a little squeak as she felt her giving her a warm hug.

“It’s ok sweetie. I know that you weren’t yourself, it happens to the best of us, but I want you to do something for me.” She said getting down on one knee and looking Lilly in the eyes. “I want you to take care of yourself… Something tells me that with all of the adoptions that I’ve heard about from Amanda, that things will be getting better for you in just a little while.” She said giving the opossum a knowing wink.

“Well, let’s get you back to the orphanage, your roommate has been worried about you.” Amanda said giving a nod to the other two before her and Lilly started out of the room, making their way through the hospital and out the front. “But yeah… I kinda knocked over a nurse… I came rushing through the door as the poor guy was coming out and knocked him on his butt.”

“It’s weird to think that you can do that… I mean, no offense, but you’re kinda scrawny.” Lilly said with a little giggle as they got to the van and started getting in. The drive from the hospital to the orphanage was a tame one, the two talking a little, talking about the things that Lilly missed while she was gone, things that changed, the record number of adoptions that had been happening and the fact that there were a good number more to come.

Once the pair got back to the orphanage, Lilly and Amanda got out and made their way into the house, the wind having picked up a little, bringing in the cool air of the fall. Amanda more or less ushering Lilly off to see her roommate and the friends that she had there, letting her know that they had been worried about her. The rat had a lot to look over in the paperwork that Darwin had given her, having stolen a glance at it on the way home.

Lilly had made it to her shared room without running into anyone, and in most cases this was a good thing, it meant less that she had to deal with. She tapped on the door before opening it and starting to step in. She was half hoping that her roommate was off doing something so that she could have a little of time alone to think about what she was going to tell her and all that, but she wasn’t that lucky.

“Lilly!” A voice called out from one of the beds. “I swear to God. You scared the hell out of me.” The bull terrier said shaking her head a little as she got up and walked over to the smaller opossum. “It’s a good thing that I had to pee when I did…” She said wrapping her arms around the opossum.

“I know… I guess this is the one time that I’m happy to have someone walk into the bathroom on me like that.” Lilly said bringing her arms up to hug the canine. “Thank you, Lola.” She said in a near whisper as they broke the hug and walked over to their beds, flopping onto them.

“Don’t worry about it, I’m just happy that you’re ok and that you’re back with us.” Lola said as she laid back on her bed, her legs hanging off the edge. “And I’m sure that if had been you know who and things were a little different, you wouldn’t be complaining about someone walking in on you in the bathroom.”

“You shut up.” Lilly said sitting up, blush clinging to her cheeks as she tossed a pillow at her roommate. “I told you, that was all a dream that you had.” She said picking up her other pillow and holding onto it. “And even if I did like them… I’m sure that once he hears what I did, he will be like everyone else and just avoid me like the plague…. Or worse.”

“Well about that…” Lola said sitting up and tossing the pillow back onto Lilly’s bed. “He actually asked about you… I think that he might have been worried about out.” She said shrugging a little. “I still think that you really need to talk to him about how you feel, I think that he might feel the same way that you do, and even if he doesn’t what could it hurt?”

“It could hurt a lot of things, I can promise you that.” Lilly said holding onto her pillow a little tighter. “I mean what if he only likes me as a friend or something like that… Or what if something doesn’t work out.” She paused for a moment, “and even then, why would someone like him, someone that high up on the food chain want someone like me. That kinda thing doesn’t happen outside of them using someone like me to get revenge on someone that they were dating, or something even worse.” Lilly said, letting her mind wonder to all of the bad places that something like this could go.”

“All of those things are something that could happen, but they could happen to anyone at anytime, not just you.” Lola said getting up and moving over to the opossum’s bed and sitting with her. “I don’t think that any of that is going to happen, I mean when he came up to me and asked me about where you were, he seemed worried about you not being at school. So I think that it’s safe to say that he has some kind of positive feelings for you.”

“So I have to ask, what kind of rumors are going around the school about why I’m not there?” Lilly asked, changing the subject or fishing for more info before deciding on what she was going to do in terms of talking to him.

“The only thing that I have heard that was going around is that you were really sick, that’s about all, I haven’t heard anyone talking about what happened or anything like that, so I think that everyone is in the dark on the whole you trying to kill yourself… So I think that you can get away with just telling people that you were really sick and just going with it.” She paused for a few moments to think, before starting to smile. “You know, I can help you out with your shyness.”

“You’re planning something and I don’t know if I should be worried or happy.” Lilly said shaking her head a little at the thoughts of all the things that the bull terrier could be planning to use to help her. “So what are you planning?”

“Well it might sound a little childish, but you know that you could write him a little note and slip it into his locker, you know, just something a little simple, telling him how you feel and asking him if he feels the same, or how he feels.” Lola said smiling and getting up to walk over to the desk that was against the wall and picking up a notebook and pen. “I will help you write it.”

“I really don’t like the idea of doing something like that, I mean there is a lot of things that can go wrong with something like that.” She said shaking her head a little. “I mean what if you or I put it in the wrong locker? Someone would have that and they could use that to tease me or start all kinds of rumors… Or we could get the right locker, and well he could hate the idea of the note and me and he could use it as blackmail or show it around the school and get all kinds of rumors going too.”

“Well I can tell you that it’s not going to end up in the wrong locker… I know what locker is his, and before you ask, I know what locker is his cause his is right next to mine.” She said shaking her head a little. “That’s where he stopped me and got to asking me about you. And as for the rumors and all that. I don’t think that anything like that is going to happen, I have a good feeling about this.” She said turning to a black page in the notebook and handing it to Lilly.

The pair spent the better part of the rest of the day talking and planning out just what she wanted the note to say, not to mention finally getting around to writing it folded just right. Even after the two finished and folded the note, there was several times that Lilly had to open the note to re-read something, check something, even redo something completely, she this to the point that the not had gotten written over at least once or twice more by Sunday.

Sunday morning was a little slow, a lot like it was any other Sunday morning, most of the younger kids or the ones that wanted to would go off to Church and Sunday school with the workers, a little something to help brighten their week. Lilly and Lola on the other hand, didn’t go, the pair like getting their two days a week to sleep in and not having to worry about doing any real thinking or anything like that.

It was mid-day or so, the workers and kids that went were still at church, so it couldn’t have been too late in the day when Lilly started waking up. Following her normal routine of rolling around in her bed, trying to find a spot that was just right so that she could try to fall back asleep, but this was one of the times that her thrust and other bodily functions won the war against bed gravity, to the point that she got up, stretched and scooped up her PJs. For the most part, the kids got to wear most anything that they wanted to as long as it was something decent, meaning that a lot of them opted into wearing loose, comfortable clothes when they could over walking around in street clothes.

Lilly went to open her muzzle to ask Lola something, but stopped at the sight of the bull terrier sleeping, clinging to the stuffed animal that she had gotten earlier in the year as a birthday gift, the sight caused Lilly to smile a little before turning and heading off to the cramped bathroom that the two shared and then she was off on her main mission.

“Well would you look at that.” A voice spoke up, causing the opossum to snap out of her own little world and look around, cringing at the sight and sound of the voice once it hit her, who it belonged to. “It looks like I was wrong about you not making it back.”

“Well fuck you too for the vote of confidence.” Lilly said shaking her head at the cow girl that was standing there. “I mean, with people like you around here, I’m sure you could see why I would do something like that.” She said glaring at her, for the most part, Bessie was Lilly’s rival, even a bully to a point. The cow was only a year or so older, but thanks to Lilly being a runt, she was easily bigger and wider than she was, maybe even meaner than the opossum.

“Really? Is that the best that you can come up with?” Bessie asked, shaking her head a little. “I’m guessing all that blood loss made you even stupider.”

“No, it’s more that I wanted to go for something a little different, something other than all of the same fat jokes with a slightly different spin on them… You something that’s topical and a bit on the smart side… Then again with it being a smart insult I think that it might go over your head.”

The cow female didn’t say anything for a moment before shaking her head a little. “I’m not stupid.” She said taking a step closer to the opossum. “I might be a lot of things, but at least I’m
