Larry immediately takes notice of Kayla behind the Leopard and looks at her incredulously.
"So what's going on? She normally following you around like that... or is that a recent development?"
Teita inwardly groans at the negative tone Larry is already using, but tries to ignore it.
"Nope. She's done everything I've asked. I requested she do that to prevent being imposing."
Larry cocks an eyebrow, and without a word, walks across the room. Teita just watches his approach, expecting him to test Kayla again when suddenly he slaps him!
"OW! Th-Fuck?!"
Larry's eyes are rapt on Kayla, who has done nothing but gasp and cover her mouth again. The moment is painful, Teita reeling as he staggers,
"What the heck was that for?!"
Larry responds without looking at him, waddling back to the table, but never breaking his gaze on Kayla,
"To test if she had a defense response to her 'Daddy' being attacked. In case she was pre-programmed, or you'd given her some stupid order, to be a body guard."
Teita was about to object, but Larry continued,
"AND to remind you that we are dealing with something WE DO NOT UNDERSTAND! Why would you order a potential military construct, with no confirmed allegiance, to FOLLOW you?! You're supposed to keep watch over IT, not the other way around!"
Teita sighs, turning to her,
"Kayla, did you understand his intent?"
"Yes, Master."
Larry mutters to himself as Teita continues,
"... master...?"
"Then stand in front of me."
She tentatively walks toward Larry, then turns to face the leopard. Teita raises a finger at her, twirling it in place,
"Face away from me..."
She turns back around and tries to look forward, but she can't seem to maintain eye contact with Larry, instead turning her pensive gaze to the floor.
"Stay."
He says firmly.
Teita, now showing full control of the atmosphere, walked calmly to a cabinet and punched in the access code... the room was normally an employee lounge after all. Inside was many of the usual kitchen cookware, pots, pans, spatulas, ah... there they were, the knives.
The leopard took one of the most prominent handles from the wood block before him, finding a serrated edge. He walks back over to Kayla, garnering a deep rumbling warning from Larry,
"What are you doing, Kitty...?"
Dani chimes in, clearly upset,
"Kitty, what's wrong??"
Kayla can see the glint of metal in the corner of her eye and starts to shiver in short bursts, as if she were a real person under threat and fighting her instincts to flee.
Teita utters softly breaking the brief silence,
"Kayla...?"
The room grew deathly silent for a moment,
"Don't move..."
Larry speaks up again, now seeming certain of his intent. With his hand raised, the komodo slowly moves away from them,
"Don't do this, Kitty. It's too soon. It's too risky."
Teita briefly turns on him, agitated,
"You won't trust her until this happens, so it's happening now! Kayla, raise this arm."
Larry scrambles to the fridge, reaching under it and pulling a loaded sidearm! Larry takes aim at Kayla, now yelling at Teita!
"STOP!!! We don't know what she'll do!! She could kill us all!!"
Teita raises the knife in one hand, and clasps the leopardess' wrist in the other as he takes aim with the point of the knife against her forearm! He raises it high, ready to strike!
Larry shouts, Dani screams!
"DON'T!"
"TEITA!!"
The knife is a flash! Darting down and then back up again! Larry clicks off the safety, taking aim as he holds his breath!!
Kayla, eyes clamped shut, hisses at the pain! The following silence is deafening as each party waits for a reaction from the other... but nothing comes.
A soft tickle of warmth runs across her arm, and slowly she works up the nerve to look...
He'd only JUST broken the surface of the skin and a crimson color was matting a small dot in her fur. She grumbles at him as she looks up,
"That hurt, Master."
The deathly silence is finally broken by what is best described by a collective sigh of relief. Larry still has the gun trained on them, but visibly relaxes. Teita makes sure she is watching as he then does the same motion to his own hand, pin pricking his palm.
"Yes it does."
She looks on in equal parts wonder and confusion as he shows the trickle of blood to her and says,
"But I will not ask you to do something I'm not willing to do myself. Is that clear?"
She seems to beam at that and nods. Larry breaks the strangely intimate moment with the click of his safety, practically growling at them both as he lowers it and takes the gun with him, clearly emotionally exhausted,
"You are one lucky idiot! I've already had all the danger I can stomach today. Dani, go recharge... I'm going back to work on finding out where she came from."
Larry disappears from sight into the main hall, slamming the door behind him and heading back to his workshop.
Dani takes a longing look at Teita, as if she wants to say something before complying and making her way to the door. Without any assistance, she opens it, turns back one last time, then finishes leaving to put herself back in the freezer.
Teita sighs softly, the tension in the air having finally lifted, as he was briefly lost in thought. Kayla speaks softly, and he turns to face her,
"Master?"
"What?"
"Are you okay? May I see it?"
She reaches out and he nods, letting her take his injured hand gingerly and watching her softly lick it. She then lifts her elbow and takes a lick of her own tiny cut, going between them until they are both well cleaned. She breaks the pattern of licks, making sure that they are both clean,
"Master?"
"Mmm?"
"Did I do good?"
At first he assumes she's talking about their cuts, but realizes her tone refers to earlier, since she did everything she was asked. Teita smiles and nods silently, heading over to the cupboard while she utters softly,
"Um..."
Having put the knife back, the Leopard turns again,
"Yes?"
she gestures to the open cabinet,
"May I make breakfast for you?"
Another grateful sigh passes his lips and he nods with an even warmer smile,
"Yes please... Thank you."
