Merely seconds later Ms. Zimmerman started her lesson. History once again. It was so boring Kian hated it. Drawn on the whiteboard was a sketch of Aldera, their home world.\n\nThe teacher took a marker and drew a line from one side of the board to the other.\n\n\"I think you all know what year we have now.\" She wrote it on the left end of the line. \"But do you know the reason it's exactly 1822?\"\n\n\"It started all roughly 20 BE.\" She marked it on the left side. \"Our world was then roamed by hairless primates called humans who where believed to have an intellect and technology far beyond ours.\nSo far in fact they were preparing to draw power directly out of the sun. How they were trying to do that is still a mystery to us. What we know is that something went wrong. \nTheir experiment changed the spectral composition of the sunlight. It's composition so to say. The effects were first barely noticeable but soon the high UV-levels had adverse health effects on their furless skin. \nCancer rates rose, birth defects reaching multiples of hundreds and general reproduction rate nearing zero within a year.\" She marked another point on the far left side of the line.\"In a desperate attempt to save their species, they set free an engineered virus. It was supposed to retroactively darken their skin as to work against the heightened UV radiation. To achieve this said Virus was given the ability to manipulate genes. At first it worked very well. For about five years the effects of the experiment were almost negated completely.\"\n\nIt was at about this point Kian's head hit the table with a quiet \"Clunk!\" Ms. Zimmerman didn't notice that she'd already lost three of her students to their dreams.\n\n\"It was then that the virus mutated. The new version it had created was not selectively activating the markers for dark skin, but others too. This quickly proved to be the end of the humans as their bodies couldn't handle such radical mutations.\"\nShe marked another point. 14BE. \"Within some ten years almost all of them perished from the complications. I will leave to your imagination what specifically these were. The last know member of the \"humans\" perished at our year 0. The extinction day, our new year.\"\nSwiftly, a zero appeared on the time arrow.\n\n\"The virus did not stop there however. As the humans great cities slowly degraded it found new targets. Us. What were then feral animals began to evolve new traits as an effect of the humans genome being implemented into theirs. Bipeds appeared everywhere, size differences began to equalise under them. At first they were only marginally more intelligent than their roots. Soon however their intelligence began to rise to new heights.
