His target was over six hundred feet away, a tiny little dot among a sea of trees. Impossibly far. The other contestants near him were doing the same, scouting out the distance and the possible trajectory needed to hit while taking note of any disturbances in the air.\n\n\"Hitting it,\" he muttered. That was a near impossible feat. Everyone knew that. The alpha, his pack mates, even his own son knew that and he's only nine! That clever lad. Nobody in the history of his pack had ever managed to hit the target. Which is probably why the rules had slowly changed to whichever arrow gets the closest for someone to win. Yet a part of him longed to hit it. To finally be the one to do the impossible. Nearly forty winters of trying. Eighteen spent watching his father miss over and over again. What would he give to best his old man? What would he--\n\n\"A bet,\" a man to his left said and he wasn't terribly proud when he winced slightly, just enough to embarrass him. A wolf never gets caught off-guard, his own father had taught him. Painfully at that, for a moment's distraction could lead to the death of an entire pack. Dammit. He cracked his neck with a satisfying pop and turned to look at a blue eyed fella. The man was a little feminine in his build. A face akin to a woman, indeed. Kalye, he recognized, an annoying little shit that somehow ended up as his best friend, ever stirring up some trouble. If there was a man he'd trust his life with, that one would be it. Even if he'd never admit it out loud.\n\n\"What did you say?\" John grumbled in annoyance. Perhaps he ought to aim a little more to the left? The wind was quiet erratic, or maybe...\n\n\"A bet,\" Kayle interrupted his thoughts again. \"You against me. Whoever hit's the target wins.\"\n\nA sigh escaped John's mouth as he looked at the man with a scowl. \"Nobody has ever hit it before and you damn well know it.\"\n\n\"Exactly!\" he exclaimed with a grin. \"Perhaps all we need is a little encouragement, right?\"\n\nHe wasn't completely wrong, was he? A little thrill to the chase might just be the thing to get the competitive spirit in him awake. If you went into a challenge knowing nobody has ever won it all your life long, then failing as well, the natural thing is to give up after all. Has that been the real problem all along? \"Fine, sure. What's the reward when someone wins?\"\n\n\"Awesome!\" Kayle said, then he wagged his eyebrows while leaning towards John. \"The winner gets to enjoy watching the loser lift their tail for the entire pack.\"\n\nA barking laughter burst out of John's muzzle. \"You've got to be shitting me, man!\"\n\n\"I mean,\" Kayle joined in laughing. \"What would be the odds, right? Like either of us would ever hit!\"\n\nTrue indeed. So why the hell not!\n\n---\n\nKayle looked at the target and couldn't believe it. Nobody could. Every single pack mate was standing around the target with a gaping maw. A single arrow was stuck right in the middle of it. A red arrow with the initials of John.\n\n\"John,\" people whispered around him. \"John did this... John hit it... John...\" and Kayle simply stood there speechless with his muzzle nearly reaching the floor.\n\nA hand fell on top of his shoulders and Kayle startled with an entirely manly squeak.
