In the age of Ancient Greece, war engulfed the lands as the gods fought amongst one another. Hera, queen of the heavens, sought a way to end this strife and turned her gaze south. She spoke with Hathor, a foreign cow goddess of motherhood and children, who listened to the goddesses' plight and offered her help. And so, with the aid of her servants Hebe, goddess of youth, and Eileithyia, goddess of childbirth, Hera crafted a mighty ritual designed to seal away the powers of the other gods and leave them in a helpless state. First, she required the cauldron of the sorceress Circe, whose power of transformation is unrivaled. Second, she needed the water of Lethe, the river of forgetfulness. And third, she needed to imprison Chronos, god of time, and steal his hourglass. Once all three ingredients were gathered and the god of time locked away, the goddesses got to stirring an elixir that would turn the gods from adults into infants. Many days and nights went by, until finally the potion was complete. They tested it on Chronos as he was the most likely to be able to resist its magic. But not even the god of time was immune to the combined powers of the ritual. He began to age backwards, but something changed and suddenly he began sprouting scales like a serpent. Because the magic involved was Egyptian in nature, it would turn its victims into anthropomorphised versions of their sacred animals. But even so, it worked, time itself was conquered. And so Hera set up a ceasefire amongst the gods and gathered them on Olympus to discuss peace. And so, she and her servants spiked the ambrosia and nectar with the potion. She raised a toast and one by one, the gods down the enchanted drink. And within moments, they all began to transform. Slowly the gods shifted into bestial, childlike forms, their powers and memories slipping away. And in order to maintain control over the spell, Hera and her servants drank the potion, becoming cows like Hathor but retaining their adulthood. And so, Hera gathered the stolen powers of the gods and hid them inside her scepter. And with her authority as queen of the three realms, she declared a new era for mankind. The three goddesses became the Matrons, the new leaders of the world. Queens Amphitrite and Persephone bowed to Hera, eager to be free of their husbands’ influence. Olympus changed from the golden halls to green pastures as a nursery was erected for the transformed gods, where they would receive love and care from their new mothers.
