Backstory:
In reality, the Captain’s blunder had made Scar’s job all the easier.
Scar had, of course, been the first to find SImba when the news of Mufasa’s disappearance broke—it helps to know what the disaster is before the media does. He hurried to explain to SImba that he was to run and hide, the coded phrases he would use to send for him, that he would keep the stewards and staff busy until the prince was gone. Not that it would have made a difference, terribly, if anyone HAD witnessed the ‘escape,’ but it would have been another loose end.
As it was, Scar had shoved Simba into an escape shuttle with a pre-charted course without anyone seeing him. Then he’d crafted a story of a confrontation with Simba, that had ended with the younger lion overpowering his uncle and escaping, at his leisure. Scar, of course, protested Simba’s innocence to the public—that he was simply afraid, and misguided, in the wake of his father’s disappearance. He called for the prince’s arrest, all the same, claiming that with Mufasa missing, his son must be put into protective custody. It was more than possible, after all, whether whoever was behind Mufasa’s… unavailability would also be a threat to the crown prince!
There’s very little that’s sweeter, Scar mused, than perfectly framing the truth so that it might as well have been a lie.
If the Captain had seen who had all but commanded Simba to flee, he would have needed to be disposed of, in one manner or another. (There were rumors of promising technology from Mobius that could do away with the mind and leave the body for better uses.) But with the man blissfully unaware, all Scar needed to do was punish his incompetence.
But then, there was always a use for meatheads who had proved unreliable.

Sigh.
Scar’s hand was backwards in the original.
I should’ve fixed that ages ago.
What’s more, if I were to redraw these entirely, I’d give him an ersatz-bluetooth earpiece instead of a fucking flip phone. Editing that in would take too much effort.
As I’m posting this, I’m rethinking something I was planning on doing for a further sequel...I dunno. Something to ponder, I suppose.
