I hope you are well, my friend, that your eye does not pain you, that your seclusion remains tranquil, and that your students remain dutiful.
I have again had cause to caution my eldest. He tries too hard, spends more effort than is needful. He thirsts to prove himself. He chases honor as if to present it to me in exchange for paternal affection. But one must wait to strike at honor when it approaches, as with any foe.
They all, save the youngest of course, were eager to go. There were spirited words when I refused them. This is as it should be. They are students yet, and it would not be fitting to have an old man’s prudence in young heads. Experience will teach them prudence, and experience will teach them to be prepared for the experience that will teach them prudence.
But this mission is not for any of them. It lies in uncertain ground, as the masters would say, and until they have mastered more of the way of stealth, the way of surveillance, the way of spycraft, that which lies on uncertain ground must be left to those from whom that ground is not uncertain.
For the mission cannot wait. Our client, and friend if it is not too familiar to say, may have discovered something. A substance I feared all but vanished from the world, used up before any knew it was present to be used. Perhaps a source of power. Perhaps a danger. Perhaps the answers to questions with which I have dueled longer than I have been a father.
Perhaps all three.
So he goes himself. I judge he can be trusted to take care of himself. I have given him direction and introduction to discreet and professional mercenary aid in his destination, and I must trust them, and him, to discover if this is truly the source of the miracle compound that, for me and mine, has changed all the world by changing us.
Perhaps the secrets of its making can be discovered. Perhaps the secrets of its making can be destroyed.
Perhaps there are no secrets, and it was all mere careless karma, drifting blindly down the river, until it reached my doorstep here.
Allow me to thank you, my friend, for the advice on grip exercises. My second oldest has responded well to the training you proposed, and makes rapid progress. Allow me to thank you, also, for the jasmine tea you contrived to send. It is long since I had such a tool of serenity. Such luxuries do not keep well in my home. But one teaches oneself to be content with that which one has, and by such contentment learns to go beyond what one has to what one is, which is a luxury that keeps very well indeed, no matter the climate.
You see, my friend, if I have no means to offer you gifts, I will send proverbs instead.

Oh look, I redrew Leatherhead’s entire pose.
Did I make it clear this is the 2003 Leatherhead but with a cajun accent? Is writing the accent phonetically just completely obnoxious? Don’t answer that.
The beginning of this month was a rough one-two punch for me. I’m trying to regain my momentum. It kinda helps that my birthday’s at the end of the month?
