I know Mr. Mookie was your favorite but are you sure he's too chewed up?\"\n \"It's terrible, Mister Shag. He doesn't even squeak anymore.\"\n The pup was talking about his chew toy. It was a yellow rabbit that squeaked under the slightest pressure. Artie loved it so much he used it as a way to problem solve. He loved Mr. Mookie so much he thought the rabbit should have his own cartoon.\n \"Have you talked to your mom about this?\"\n \"Oh, you know mom,\" Artie became dejected. \"She's always working.\"\n \"You know,\" Ace Hart said from the drawing board (only the animator could hear him), \"Eliot is working too, or at least he's trying to.\"\n As inconspicuously as he could, the real German shepherd hushed the ficticious one, then returned his focus to the sad pup in front of him.\n \"Well, maybe when she gets home, you can talk to her about getting another Mr. Mookie.\"\n \"I don't want another one, I want my Mr. Mookie- but normal!\"\n \"While we wait, do you want to watch me work on Ace's new case?\"\n \"Oh, can I? He wanted to cheer Artie up, but his subconscious pulled him in a worse direction.\n Ace was hot on the trail of Baron Von Rottweiler. The villain was threatening to blow up the dog biscuit factory and every dog was worried. They knew they would still have food, but a life without treats was like a life without fire hydrants. It was manageable, but it was a luxury most of Dog City had grown quite accustomed to.\n Ace snuck in through a window and found the rottweiler. He was ambushed by Leon Burger and bound to a chair, right beside the bomb.\n Baron Von Rottweiler monologued about how he eluded capture for so long, and speaking of \"so long\", he bid auf Weidersehen to Ace and the city's supply of treats. As he made his way to his helicopter to escape, Rosie O'Gravy and a dozen police dogs kicked the door down, apprehended the rottweiler, and defused the bomb.\n That night, Ace, alone in his office, opened the wall safe and pulled out his squeaky toy. He bit and chewed it, working out the day's stress. The tough rubber stood up to the German shepherd's teeth for about 20 minutes, but Ace Hart, private-eye dog wasn't being as gently as he would normally be. \n He was frustrated that he neither beat the villain nor got the girl. In fact, the girl beat the villain and saved him. It was too much for an old-fashioned dog. He chewed. The toy squeaked. He gnawed, it squeaked. He was working it over like a rough interrogation. The toy was sundered and the squeaker fell out. Ace still worked it until is was utterly ruined and covered in slobber.\n He panted and wiped his mouth. He looked at the broken thing and cursed it. \n\n \"Mister Shag, why's Ace doing that?\" the pup was concerned.\n \"Well, Artie,\" Eliot responded. He glimpsed at Ace on the page, who was giving a disapproving look at the animator. \"He likes it. Yeah. Sometimes you show how you feel with licks and sometimes, only sometimes, you can show it with bites.\"\n \"Like what happened to Mr. Mookie?\"\n \"That's right, you loved him too much. So when you get ano-.....when Mr. Mookie feels better, don't be so rough with him okay? He'll last longer and be able to take more of your love that way.\"\n Artie was a little confused. \n \"It doesn't mean he's not your favorite. It means you want him to be your favorite forever.\"\n There was a knock on the door. \n \"Who is it?\" Eliot asked.\n \"Mister Shag, it's Terri. Is Artie there? He's not home and I just saw Mr. Mookie...\"\n Artie opened the door. \n \"Hi, mom. I was just watching Mister Shag work while I was waiting for you to get home. I needed to talk to you.\"\n \"Is it about Mr.Mookie?\"\n \"Yeah he's...\"\n Terri Springer pulled something from behind her back into view of the pup. It was a yellow rabbit squeak toy. Artie was excited, and then crestfallen when he realized it was a new toy. He sniffed it cautiously, and it smelled like English springer spaniel pup. It smelled like Artie- it was Mr. Mookie!\n \"Oh, Mr. Mookie, you're all better!\"\n Terri and Eliot exchanged a knowing glance. She had a few back-ups kept in a box in the closet. They had all been chewed by the pup. This wasn't the first time \"Mr.Mookie\" had been lovingly snuffed by Artie.\n \"Ready to go home?\"\n \"Yes, ma'am!\"\n Artie squeezed Mr. Mookie a few times with his hand and the toy squeaked cheerily in response. The pup followed his mother out of Mr. Shag's apartment. \n He turned around and said, \"See ya later, animator.\"\n Once the guests were gone, Eliot turned back to his work. Ace was still upset with Eliot's choices.\n \"I'm sorry, Ace.
