After dodging a bunch of cameras at the common areas the two were already back at the building because SpongebobsPineapple is lazy and doesn't want to tell their journey from the pool to the building. Shame on him.
Simba: The elevators have cameras. We'll have to take the stairs.
Nala: The stairs?!
Simba: It's a good exercise!
Nala: No, I don't care about the exercise, but if someone shows up there, there's nowhere to hide!

The reason why Nala was so apprehensive of the stairs is because of the way they were designed: It was basically a huge corridor that ran through all the floors of the building. After each set of stairs, there was a corridor; this corridor had two doors at each end. This meant that when you reached the end of a set, you would be very close to the first door. To reach the next set, you would have to go to the other side of the corridor, where the second door was located. The first door was always right next to the end of the previous set, and the second was always right next to the start of the next set. These doors would lead you to a room with a few more doors, each leading to the apartments (let's call these rooms "entry halls", for practicality). Such doors were their only escape in case someone appeared.
"And the corridors are not short...", she thought
They went through the door that lead to the staircase.
Simba: Cheer up! We weren't caught down there, do you think we'll get caught here? Barely anyone uses these stairs.
Nala: Yeah, but down there we- I could at least hide. Here it's next to impossible!
Simba: Isn't that exciting?
Nala: For you it is! You think I don't know that this volume in your pants is your hard cock?
Simba (provoking): Hey! We shouldn't look at each other's parts, you know?

The way up was pretty uneventful. Well, kind of. It was true the fact that barely anyone used those stairs... when all 3 elevators were active. Today was a Saturday, a day in which a lot of people would go down to the common areas, and there was only one elevator for an entire building. Some people would rather just take the stairs, because it ended up being faster.
Well, that ended up confirming itself on two occasions: Once they were between the 8th and 9th floor, they heard footsteps and voices very close to them. The two quickly realized that they were coming towards them, so Nala had to run back down to the 8th floor and stay in one of the entry halls until they left. In the second occasion, they were already crossing the 15th floor corridor, going towards Simba's entry hall, when the door suddenly opened, prompting the two to race back down to the 14th floor and do the same thing Nala did earlier. This time, she wasn't so lucky, though. And they knew it, because they heard this conversation:
Neighbor 1: Honey, did you see a naked girl over there?
Neighbor 2: Yes, and she was with Mufasa's kid.
Neighbor 3: Mommy, why can she be naked and I can't?
Neighbor 2: Are you her?
Neighbor 3: No, but-
Neighbor 2: That's why.
And after this, the voices were now too far for the two to hear what they were saying, including when the first neighbor asked his wife if they should tell Mufasa.
Nala (whispering): I. Hate. You.
Simba just laughed.
After this, they arrived at the apartment to find out that Sarabi was awake, much to Nala's embarrassment and Simba's horror.
Sarabi: Nala! Simba! What is the meaning of this?!
"I'm doomed...", Simba thought.
Simba: Uhh... ya see...
Nala: We were at the pool and my bikinis simply slided off and I couldn't find them anymore.
Sarabi: Slided off?
Nala: Yes. My tops unlaced themselves and I only noticed it after too long. After that, we started looking for them and next thing I knew, I didn't have my bottoms either.
Simba: We came back because we feared people would start arriving at the pool.
Sarabi: Oh my, you poor thing! Let me get you a towel! (starts leaving, then looks back at them) Simba! Stop looking at her! That's rude! (leaves at once)
Eventually, Sarabi came back with a towel. While the two 6th graders took a bath, Mufasa woke up and his wife told him about what happened. During breakfast, he asked Nala:
Mufasa: Nala, did anyone see you?
Nala: No.
Mufasa: I'll check the cameras later and delete any video that may have catched you while you were coming back.
That's when Simba remembered: There were cameras at the pool...
