Of course, that was over a year ago. As it turns out, there were actual riots, but not many of them were people... The company that New Joy was known for, Dynamic Industries, had actually had an \"accidental\" containment breach on their dangerously unstable prototype nanite micromachines designed to attack cancer cells, though what it was meant for and what it did are two VERY different things... though it did cure the victims who had cancer. Depending on the environment, the machines would turn living creatures into a random assortment of different things, sometimes even including sentient, non-organic creatures. Most of the city's populace was changed into all sorts of different, sex crazed, monstrous creatures. Containment of the nanite infection failed after less than a month has passed, leading to the rapid spread and Armageddon. But Burl most likely doesn't know that the world ended almost a year ago. The deputy was one of the officers trying to evacuate the uninfected citizens to the city museum, which was originally going to be a safe house and eventual extraction point for what was assumed to be a quick turnaround for this outbreak. But the helicopters never came and after a week of fending off attacks of increasing numbers of infected monsters, Burl was the only one left to protect the small group of survivors. (Just a note, many areas of the city are covered in a fine layer of nanites, waiting for a way into the body.) After running dry on ammunition and breaking his baton, Deputy Pith was forced to pick up a weapon to defend himself and the others. Most of the museum had been lost already and he was holed up in the Ancient Egyptian Exhibit and the closest weapon at hand was a restored, bronze Khopesh He was able to fight off the remaining infected, but sustained a wound from the khopesh due to inexperience with the weapon and promptly passed the fuck out. Upon regaining consciousness, He knew something had gone horribly wrong, being able to see the long, curved muzzle for a few minutes, before his eyes adjusted to seeing it and began to ignore it like a human being able to see their own nose. After the required hour or so of flipping out, Burl took stock of his new form an situation, the survivors were missing and there were piles of shredded clothing and puddles of.... stuff... Meaning that he'd failed at his job of protecting them. Taking the khopesh and what remained of his uniform, he began setting up the Evac point once more, trying to follow his final orders over and over until a Helicopter actually DID come.... and crashed into the museum, covered in flying infected.
