In four years later, their efforts had produced what, by then Roman standards, was considered a large family of four children. Cornelius, with no outwards signs that anything was wrong with him, stood up to leave the table after a meal with his wife and in front of her and the household slaves who waited at table, keeled over and was dead before he hit the floor.\n\nHis death, tragic as it was, gave Flavius the opportunity to organise things as he wanted. On his father’s death, Flavius, at the very young age of 20, became the titular head of the Valerius household; he inherited the entire Valerius fortune making him one of the richest men   – possibly the richest man   – in Rome. In becoming pater familias of the Valerius household, a title which, given his four children, he richly merited in its literal sense, his word became law in the house; and this applied not only to the slaves, servants and hangers-on who abounded in the large household, but also to his kith and kin. The hitherto autocracy of his father, under which he had been forced to live all his life, outwardly at least, according to social conventions, was now his; and his alone. He was henceforth the family autocrat, whose word was law and had to be obeyed.\n\nBut being in a position where his authority was absolute did not solve his immediate problems. He knew he could do as he wished as far as his sex life with other men was concerned and that everyone, including his immediate family, like it or not, would have to stomach it. But bisexual as he knew he was and still loving deeply Claudia and their children, he wanted to continue his happy conjugal life with her. But at the same time he wanted to build a parallel, formal gay life with men of his choice, which would be accepted by Claudia. In other words, he wanted to formalise what Claudia, like most high-born Roman women of the time were all tacitly forced to accept, that their husbands were casually fucking other men in addition to the conjugal relations they enjoyed with their wives. In other words, Flavius wanted to continue to run with the hare and hunt with the hounds as he had hitherto done clandestinely; but this time with the full acceptance of his wife.\n\nAfter considerable thought as to the best way to approach this difficult task which, at first sight, was akin to squaring a circle, he decided to take the bull by the horns and discuss his sexual dilemma with his wife. To his immense surprise, Claudia’s attitude to his revelation that the man to whom she was married, with whom she had produced four children in the four years of their marriage and with whom she still enjoyed frequent sex, was completely bisexual, was amazingly understanding. She was not fazed when he explained to her that his sexual frequentation of men of lower social classes was not to show his superiority as was generally the braggadocio case of free-born men like him men of his social class, but a genuine love and need of homosexual sex, an act which was as much a necessity to him as was having sex with her. And even when he confessed that he had already committed the ultimate sin of allowing himself to be penetrated by other men of a lower class with whom he had consorted, she took the news with amazing equanimity.\n\nClaudia had the wisdom, way beyond her young years, to understand Flavius’s attraction towards members of his own sex, was not something which could be wished away. It was a fact of life which she would either have to live with or leave him. She could easily divorce Flavius as there were no legal formalities in ancient Rome; one or both parties to a Roman marriage simply had to consider themselves no longer married. It was deemed advisable to notify the other party, but not even legally required that one do so. If now he wished to plunge himself more deeply into homosexual relations with other men and plough what was, at that time, a completely new furrow, provided he still treated and serviced her sexually as his wife, why should she object and upend what had become a very comfortable and pleasant life in the Valerius household? Surprisingly, it was she, who now took the initiative and made a proposal to Flavius, which he had never dreamed of, which truly did allow him to have the best of both worlds: to have his cake and eat it.\n\nWhat Claudia proposed, was that they continue to live together as man and wife with their children, but that Flavius could lead a parallel, separate life with men of his choice, provided it was done discreetly. But Claudia also insisted that if they remained together, that Flavius must promise her faithfully that she was, and would remain, the only woman in his life. He was free to indulge in sex with other men as he wished; but there were to be no other women. Given that his bi-sexual orientation was more heavily towards men than women, Flavius was overjoyed to receive this approbation of his new life style, which as head of the Valerius household he knew that Claudia could not veto. But, nevertheless, as the two were still completely in love with each other and as Valerius had never had sex with a woman other than Claudia nor she with anyone but him, this was a restriction which Valerius joyously accepted.\n\nLeft to his own devices aged 15, when his father had caught him in flagrante in the act if fucking another boy, had he he not been bulldozed by into marriage with Claudia, Flavius would never have even looked at a woman. But the marriage had turned out, against all odds, to be a success. Flavius had been totally faithful to Claudia and had never even glanced at another woman. The proposed agreement with Claudia was utter perfection for Flavius; he could maintain his married life and sexual relations with his wife, whom he still loved deeply; but at the same time he was a free to indulge his irrepressible homosexual bent as he wished. To say that at this point in his life that Flavius was in a dilemma was to put things mildly.<br /><br />But then fate intervened and turned everything on its head. His father Cornelius, himself then still a young man of 40 and sexually very active, both with his wife, Octavia, Flavius&rsquo;s mother and with other men, suddenly dropped dead from a heart-attack. This event was totally unexpected and without warning. Cornelius, with no outwards signs that anything was wrong with him, stood up to leave the table after a meal with his wife and in front of her and the household slaves who waited at table, keeled over and was dead before he hit the floor.<br /><br />His death, tragic as it was, gave Flavius the opportunity to organise things as he wanted. On his father&rsquo;s death, Flavius, at the very young age of 20, became the titular head of the Valerius household; he inherited the entire Valerius fortune making him one of the richest men&nbsp;&nbsp; &ndash; possibly the richest man&nbsp;&nbsp; &ndash; in Rome. In becoming pater familias of the Valerius household, a title which, given his four children, he richly merited in its literal sense, his word became law in the house; and this applied not only to the slaves, servants and hangers-on who abounded in the large household, but also to his kith and kin. The hitherto autocracy of his father, under which he had been forced to live all his life, outwardly at least, according to social conventions, was now his; and his alone. He was henceforth the family autocrat, whose word was law and had to be obeyed.<br /><br />But being in a position where his authority was absolute did not solve his immediate problems. He knew he could do as he wished as far as his sex life with other men was concerned and that everyone, including his immediate family, like it or not, would have to stomach it. But bisexual as he knew he was and still loving deeply Claudia and their children, he wanted to continue his happy conjugal life with her. But at the same time he wanted to build a parallel, formal gay life with men of his choice, which would be accepted by Claudia. In other words, he wanted to formalise what Claudia, like most high-born Roman women of the time were all tacitly forced to accept, that their husbands were casually fucking other men in addition to the conjugal relations they enjoyed with their wives. In other words, Flavius wanted to continue to run with the hare and hunt with the hounds as he had hitherto done clandestinely; but this time with the full acceptance of his wife.<br /><br />After considerable thought as to the best way to approach this difficult task which, at first sight, was akin to squaring a circle, he decided to take the bull by the horns and discuss his sexual dilemma with his wife. To his immense surprise, Claudia&rsquo;s attitude to his revelation that the man to whom she was married, with whom she had produced four children in the four years of their marriage and with whom she still enjoyed frequent sex, was completely bisexual, was amazingly understanding. She was not fazed when he explained to her that his sexual frequentation of men of lower social classes was not to show his superiority as was generally the braggadocio case of free-born men like him men of his social class, but a genuine love and need of homosexual sex, an act which was as much a necessity to him as was having sex with her. And even when he confessed that he had already committed the ultimate sin of allowing himself to be penetrated by other men of a lower class with whom he had consorted, she took the news with amazing equanimity.<br /><br />Claudia had the wisdom, way beyond her young years, to understand Flavius&rsquo;s attraction towards members of his own sex, was not something which could be wished away. It was a fact of life which she would either have to live with or leave him. She could easily divorce Flavius as there were no legal formalities in ancient Rome; one or both parties to a Roman marriage simply had to consider themselves no longer married. It was deemed advisable to notify the other party, but not even legally required that one do so. No public authority was involved; Romans didn&rsquo;t get a divorce; they simply separated and that was that. And this is what Flavius had expected his wife to do; but Claudia had other ideas. After four years of marriage and four children to show for it, Claudia, who was also a very sensual person and revelled in the close sexual relationship she had always enjoyed with her sexually very-well-endowed husband, decided that she would stay. Better the devil you know than the devil you don&rsquo;t was her attitude. She had lived in complete sexual harmony with Flavius for four years, in spite of his homosexual philandering. So why rock the boat?<br /><br />In spite of everything she still loved Flavius deeply; he was still an expert and ardently frequent lover and time had not tarnished the pleasure she&nbsp;&nbsp; &ndash; actually both of them&nbsp;&nbsp; &ndash; still derived from having sex together; and there were their four children to consider, all of whom both of them adored and whom she did not wish to deprive of their father. After all, like all upper class Roman wives she had known about his sexual relations with other men, which were considered as completely normal in marriages at the time and carried no social stigma. If now he wished to plunge himself more deeply into homosexual relations with other men and plough what was, at that time, a completely new furrow, provided he still treated and serviced her sexually as his wife, why should she object and upend what had become a very comfortable and pleasant life in the Valerius household? Surprisingly, it was she, who now took the initiative and made a proposal to Flavius, which he had never dreamed of, which truly did allow him to have the best of both worlds: to have his cake and eat it.<br /><br />What Claudia proposed, was that they continue to live together as man and wife with their children, but that Flavius could lead a parallel, separate life with men of his choice, provided it was done discreetly. But Claudia also insisted that if they remained together, that Flavius must promise her faithfully that she was, and would remain, the only woman in his life. He was free to indulge in sex with other men as he wished; but there were to be no other women. Given that his bi-sexual orientation was more heavily towards men than women, Flavius was overjoyed to receive this approbation of his new life style, which as head of the Valerius household he knew that Claudia could not veto. But, nevertheless, as the two were still completely in love with each other and as Valerius had never had sex with a woman other than Claudia nor she with anyone but him, this was a restriction which Valerius joyously accepted.<br /><br />Left to his own devices aged 15, when his father had caught him in flagrante in the act if fucking another boy, had he he not been bulldozed by into marriage with Claudia, Flavius would never have even looked at a woman. But the marriage had turned out, against all odds, to be a success. Flavius had been totally faithful to Claudia and had never even glanced at another woman. The proposed agreement with Claudia was utter perfection for Flavius; he could maintain his married life and sexual relations with his wife, whom he still loved deeply; but at the same time he was a free to indulge his irrepressible homosexual bent as he wished. Of course, given his status as pater familias of the Valerius household, he could do exactly as he wanted. But the agreement with Claudia, avoiding any animosity, certainly made life easier. And so, aged now just 21, Flavius was as free as a bird; he could run with the hare and hunt with the hounds. He was sexually completely free of any family constraints; and as for what society thought of the sexual life he proposed lead; well, they could go to hell with their disapproval. He had the bit between his teeth and the financial means to please himself. It was his life and henceforth he meant to live it as he wished.</span>",
