We saved the world every other month, sometimes every other week, so we definitely deserved some downtime every now and again!\nNow everyone was sitting on the couch or on chairs, enjoying an action comedy with pretty good ratings when Shadow decided to pull me into the other room after having spend the last half hour in the bathroom by himself.\nWith giggling and laughing in the background even as I closed the door connecting the living room with the hall, I turned to face my mate of a year and a half and gave him my undivided attention.\n\"What you gotta tell me? Something wrong?\" I asked, slightly worried as Shad looked so serious about whatever he wanted me to know.\n\"You remember all the times we talked about having children someday? About having a big family in the future?\" He asked, prodding to see if those talks stuck around.\n'Course I remember! How could I ever forget? We usually had those talks after sex when I forgot to pull a condom on or ripped right through it. Have been for three months apparently.\"\nI remember the widest smile inching up on my muzzle as Shadow told me this news, realizing what this meant.\nWe were gonna have a baby, a little us running around. We won't be chasing just robots and other bad guys, we'd be chasing hedgehoglets from now on too! And I'll bet ya anything they'll be just as fast as us!\nI was gonna be a dad and an awesome one too!\nThe more it sank in the happier I became, capturing Shad in the tightest hug I could muster. There was not a single doubt in my mind that we'd do great as parents.\nWhen we broke apart, I placed a hand on that small bump and it became all the more real.\nI couldn't wait to tell the others.\nAs Shad was apparently already three months far, judging purely by the bump itself, he didn't mind when I burst back into the living room and promptly paused the movie to tell them the good news. Pretty much as soon as we found out did we make ourselves and our place ready for the baby.\nWe learned all we could from books and other parents, who left not a single gross detail to the imagination as they talked about everything from the discomforts of pregnancy to the gross stuff babies and toddlers could do.\nWe suffered through shopping sprees together as Amy, and often Rouge too, figured we still didn't have enough clothes or toys for our kid, despites the heaps we were slowly collecting from what we bought aswell as got from others as gifts. Knuckles turned out to be especially generous that way.\nWe baby proofed the house as much as we could, even found a safer spot for Shad's other babies, his guns, to be kept in. And we already started on the nursery before we even knew the kid's gender and while I still allowed Shadow to go on ladders. Under supervision, of course.\nThe latter was something that didn't last long, though. Because all the while Shadow grew in size kinda quickly. By the time his fifth month came, he had already grown to become pretty gravid.\nAnd with that size did also pains in the usual places such as his back, hips, and feet make an appearance soon. Because of this, Shad was told by his doctor to quit G.U.N until at least the baby was here, though he just filed paperwork now, and get plenty of rest.\nThe doctor believed we may be expecting a litter by Shadow's fast growth rate. We actually weren't all that shocked to hear the news. It wasn't all that uncommon for mobian parents to have litters if their feral cousins did too and now we had an actual reason to have this many stuff. Plus, Shadow had been suspecting the possibility himself already aswell.\nThe strange thing was that the doc never showed us the ultrasounds, though. I don't know why the prick, which was what my pregnant lover starts calling him everytime he was denied the first look at our baby, was keeping it all a secret from us.\nHe said somethings about it being too blurry of an image, not all that clear, couldn't even see the other hoglets? That human wasn't being very clear about the matter.\nWith month five approaching did we decide to find a new ob doctor, hoping this one would co-operate a little better. We did find one, but it was during that meeting that it all suddenly took a surprisingly different turn.\nFor the first time did we decide to come to the doctor's separately. Not long before our appointment did Eggman attack and my mate had reassured me I could meet him there.\nSo that's exactly what I did. I left early to go kick round and metal butts, hurrying it up to meet my mate at the hospital later and I finished the fight in record time! But when I got there, Shad was nowhere to be found.\nFiguring he might've gone ahead and start the appointment without me as it was kinda late already, I accidentally ended up interrupting the one of this other couple and got to hear he never showed up in the first place.\nThat's when I got worried.\nI know he wouldn't ever want to miss an appointment for anyone or anything, the baby was just too important to him. So why did he miss this one?\nThe only explanation I could come up with was that he had somehow gotten into trouble. That was the first and only one to pop into my mind.\nWe fought evil regularly, so surely someone must've had it in for him and the baby. Shadow was vulnerable now, so someone must've hurt him. Calling him on his phone only got me silence as an answer.\nOn my way out did I already start calling Rouge to see if she had heard from him, then Knuckles to tell him my lover was missing, and then Tails so he could try to track him down the same way we track down Chaos Emeralds by looking for their signature energy with his tracker. I was honestly already panicking, something I've never done before so quickly.\nThat awesome lil' bro of mine responded within the next five minutes when I tried to search the city, stating that Shadow never even left the house.\nSo I raced home, hoping to find out I was stressing over nothing and Shad just spontaneously developed a case of the pregnancy brains and just forgot all about the appointment, instead watching tv and stuffing his face to satisfy another craving.\nBut when I arrived, I noticed that the front door was open and his house keys were on the floor. I knew something had to be wrong.\n\"Shad?!\" Immediately after calling his name when I entered the house did I hear our bedroom door slamming closed.\nObviously someone didn't want me in there.\nIt was unlike me, but with an unfamiliar rage already boiling in my veins did I go up the stairs, skipping a step or two at the time. Whoever was hurting my pregnant mate was going to pay for it.\nBut when I turned the knob...\n\"Stay out, Hedgehog!\" The door was kept closed.\nShadow?\n\"Shad? What's going on in there? Let me in!\" I tried to get him to open the door, still holding onto the knob.\n\"I can't, Sonic.\" Why couldn't he just let me in? Whatever it was, it had to be serious.\n\"Why weren't you at the doctor's, Shad? I've been worried sick about you. Still am. I want to know what's up. If this is about the baby, don't you think I have the right to know?\" Calmly did I want to try and convince him to talk to me, to open this door.\nI hoped it was working. Shadow wasn't answering, maybe contemplating weither he should let me in or not.\n\"Sonic, it...\" He spoke up again after a good few minutes of silence, which I waited out patiently for him.\n\"The baby... It's not yours.\"\nTo hear that was a blow to the gut for me. Weither it was the truth or downright a lie, that didn't stop those words from stinging anyway. And badly. Why he'd say such a thing is beyond me and I hoped he could give me an answer to that.\n\"Shad... That baby has to be mine, you don't sleep with anyone but me. Unlike a lot of other guys, I know that for sure.\" I replied as I know for a fact he doesn't cheat on me. He just wouldn't, he's too loyal for that. So that can't be it.\nHe didn't reply to that anymore.\n\"Shadow, just let me in. You are genuinely freaking me out. I just want to see if you and the baby are okay. You owe me at least that much, don't you think?\" I tried once more. As the knob turned again, I knew I could finally enter.\nSure enough the door to our bedroom opened and Shadow revealed just a bit of him. Not much, but enough for me to see that he was exhausted and half naked for some reason, wearing only a long shirt that draped over him loosely.\nShad's been looking tired ever since he can't sleep comfortably at night anymore because of his size and the baby's kicking, which started back when he was only four months far, but I've never seen him this tired before.\n\"Will you let me in?\" I asked, hopefully.\n\"Will you be quiet and promise not to freak out too much?\" He asked in turn, to which he got a nod. It was a weird request, but I complied anyway.\nFinally did my mate step aside to let me in. The first thing that I noticed was the state his body was in.\nShadow stood there, clearly ready to fall over any moment now because he was that exhausted. He was sweaty, soaking through the dark green maternity shirt he wore. His legs, mostly his thighs, were soaked with a liquid I've never smelled before and were stained and speckled with blood. But most shocking of all, his belly wasn't as big as it used to be.\n\"Shadow-\" I wanted to ask him where our baby had gone, but then he gestured towards the bed, where I now noticed something lying in the middle of the covers near the pillows. It was draped with a towel over its unmoving body.\nGiving him one last look, which didn't tell me much more other than what I already knew, I decided to hesitantly approach the bed. Fear welled up in my gut and I almost ran away to avoid seeing what Shad had been trying to hide.\nThe way my heart pounded in my chest, ready to burst, was almost unreal. I stood besides the piece of furniture and leant over, kneeling with one knee on the mattress. I moved the towel to have a better look and noticed to my relief that it was breathing and just vast asleep.\nAnd then I noticed what was troubling him so much.\nThe baby looked nothing like me. And by that I also meant it didn't even look like a hedgehog.\nIt was Black Arms.\nIt shared Shadow's colour scheme of red and black, it had what looked like his hairstyle, but its muzzle was a pale white with no visible nose, it had smooth reptilian skin instead of fur. It also had an exoskeleton of what looked like soft armor plating, similar but more so than that one Eclipse alien's crest. And it had an elongated tail like that Eclipse character Shad told me about too.\nIt was definitely Black Arms. And a boy, it looks like.\n\"I think my body made this one all on its own. I don't know how long ago, but it apparently didn't need a long time to grow.\" Shadow stated, breaking the silence that hung in this room as he approached the bed, clearly taking steps with difficulty.\n\"Wait, a sec. You just gave birth, didn't you? All on your own, without an epidural, without me?\" I asked, shocked that he was still on his feet when he so clearly could fall over and pass out.\n\"Sonic-\" I didn't let him finish as I grabbed him by his upper arms and dragged him to bed, wanting him to lie down.\n\"Get on the bed, Shadow. You look like you're about to faint.\" That wasn't a suggestion. The dark hedgehog must've known he couldn't argue with that as he crawled up on the bed and plopped down on his side, curling up just a bit around his baby.\nHe was totally spend, not up for a confrontation or questions. Those would have to come later.\nSo I did the first thing that came to mind as I watched my lover try so hard to stay awake. I kicked my shoes off and lied down next to him, keeping the newborn between us. It took him off guard, but he didn't question it.\n\"I bet he's gonna be wicked fast, though. When he is, he's definitely mine.\" I wondered out loud, catching his attention as he had been close to dozing off.\n\"Sonic?\" He called my name in confusion, asking me to elaborate.\n\"Listen, Shad, you obviously didn't cheat on me and we don't really know what's going on here, but that kid's mine. Alien or not, related by blood or not. I've been watching him grow in you, the love of my life, for the past two months. That's not nothing.\" Upon hearing my words, Shadow's crimson eyes widened as he stared back at me. Apparently he hadn't expected me to accept his son.\n\"Do you mean it?\" He asked, truly hoping I did.\n\"Shad, I love you. So much. Just cause I didn't help make him doesn't mean I'm not his dad. He's mine just as much he's yours.\" I told him that blood didn't matter to me, that I couldn't care less for the newborn's origins and heritage. He just needed to be my mate's, needed to be a part of him, that is what truly mattered to me \n\"Sonic.\" Shadow wanted to lean over our son, but I didn't let him as he literally shook from the effort to reach me. So I did it instead. Leaning over to him, I pressed my lips against his in a deep kiss, which Shadow responded to with all his heart.\nWhen we parted, I made sure to lie back down carefully, minding the newborn pup lying between us. He did fidget a little, but otherwise stayed still and took a near fistful of his own hand to slobber on.\n\"I know the Black Arms don't exactly have a good reputation, but I know you'll keep him on a straight path, I have no doubts about that. So next time, just tell me instead of worrying me to death, 'kay? Besides, I can always beat your bod to the punch in another couple of months.\" I asked, to which he nodded with a small smile, huffing in amusement at my jab.\nIt was than a yawn broke through, a reminder that my boyfriend was still tired. It was about time he got some sleep.\n\"Affirmative. I love you, Sonic.\" Shadow said, reaching over to place a hand on my cheek briefly.\n\"I love you too, Shadow. Apparently more than you realize.\" That last part was a joke, but that didn't make my feelings any less genuine.\nPicking our boy up, to which he nuzzled his muzzle into his mother's touch, Shadow came to lie closer to me. With our infant sleeping on his chest, he laid his head to rest on mine and allowed me to wrap an arm around him.\nFinding a comfortable spot for the first time in a month, Shad quickly fell asleep. With those two now asleep, there was nothing left for me to do. I couldn't move with those two snuggled up against me and my unwillingness to rouse either one of them, so boredom soon caught up and I eventually followed them to slumberland.\nWith someone like Shadow, checking up on them with a professional could wait a little while. Sonic's POV

"Sonic, I need to tell you something."
We were having a get-together with our friends, a lowkey party at our place with snacks, drinks, and movies. It was something I thought we gotta do to relax. We saved the world every other month, sometimes every other week, so we definitely deserved some downtime every now and again!

So that's exactly what I did. I left early to go kick round and metal butts, hurrying it up to meet my mate at the hospital later and I finished the fight in record time! But when I got there, Shad was nowhere to be found.
Figuring he might've gone ahead and start the appointment without me as it was kinda late already, I accidentally ended up interrupting the one of this other couple and got to hear he never showed up in the first place.
That's when I got worried.
I know he wouldn't ever want to miss an appointment for anyone or anything, the baby was just too important to him. So why did he miss this one?
The only explanation I could come up with was that he had somehow gotten into trouble. That was the first and only one to pop into my mind.
We fought evil regularly, so surely someone must've had it in for him and the baby. Shadow was vulnerable now, so someone must've hurt him. Calling him on his phone only got me silence as an answer.
On my way out did I already start calling Rouge to see if she had heard from him, then Knuckles to tell him my lover was missing, and then Tails so he could try to track him down the same way we track down Chaos Emeralds by looking for their signature energy with his tracker. I was honestly already panicking, something I've never done before so quickly.
That awesome lil' bro of mine responded within the next five minutes when I tried to search the city, stating that Shadow never even left the house.
So I raced home, hoping to find out I was stressing over nothing and Shad just spontaneously developed a case of the pregnancy brains and just forgot all about the appointment, instead watching tv and stuffing his face to satisfy another craving.
But when I arrived, I noticed that the front door was open and his house keys were on the floor. I knew something had to be wrong.
"Shad?!" Immediately after calling his name when I entered the house did I hear our bedroom door slamming closed.
Obviously someone didn't want me in there.
It was unlike me, but with an unfamiliar rage already boiling in my veins did I go up the stairs, skipping a step or two at the time. Whoever was hurting my pregnant mate was going to pay for it.
But when I turned the knob...
"Stay out, Hedgehog!" The door was kept closed.
Shadow?
"Shad? What's going on in there? Let me in!" I tried to get him to open the door, still holding onto the knob.
"I can't, Sonic." Why couldn't he just let me in? Whatever it was, it had to be serious.
"Why weren't you at the doctor's, Shad? I've been worried sick about you. Still am. I want to know what's up. If this is about the baby, don't you think I have the right to know?" Calmly did I want to try and convince him to talk to me, to open this door.
I hoped it was working. Shadow wasn't answering, maybe contemplating weither he should let me in or not.
"Sonic, it..." He spoke up again after a good few minutes of silence, which I waited out patiently for him.
"The baby... It's not yours."
To hear that was a blow to the gut for me. Weither it was the truth or downright a lie, that didn't stop those words from stinging anyway. And badly. Why he'd say such a thing is beyond me and I hoped he could give me an answer to that.
"Shad... That baby has to be mine, you don't sleep with anyone but me. Unlike a lot of other guys, I know that for sure." I replied as I know for a fact he doesn't cheat on me. He just wouldn't, he's too loyal for that. So that can't be it.
He didn't reply to that anymore.
"Shadow, just let me in. You are genuinely freaking me out. I just want to see if you and the baby are okay. You owe me at least that much, don't you think?" I tried once more. As the knob turned again, I knew I could finally enter.
Sure enough the door to our bedroom opened and Shadow revealed just a bit of him. Not much, but enough for me to see that he was exhausted and half naked for some reason, wearing only a long shirt that draped over him loosely.
Shad's been looking tired ever since he can't sleep comfortably at night anymore because of his size and the baby's kicking, which started back when he was only four months far, but I've never seen him this tired before.
"Will you let me in?" I asked, hopefully.
"Will you be quiet and promise not to freak out too much?" He asked in turn, to which he got a nod. It was a weird request, but I complied anyway.
Finally did my mate step aside to let me in. The first thing that I noticed was the state his body was in.
Shadow stood there, clearly ready to fall over any moment now because he was that exhausted. He was sweaty, soaking through the dark green maternity shirt he wore. His legs, mostly his thighs, were soaked with a liquid I've never smelled before and were stained and speckled with blood. But most shocking of all, his belly wasn't as big as it used to be.
"Shadow-" I wanted to ask him where our baby had gone, but then he gestured towards the bed, where I now noticed something lying in the middle of the covers near the pillows. It was draped with a towel over its unmoving body.
Giving him one last look, which didn't tell me much more other than what I already knew, I decided to hesitantly approach the bed. Fear welled up in my gut and I almost ran away to avoid seeing what Shad had been trying to hide.
The way my heart pounded in my chest, ready to burst, was almost unreal. I stood besides the piece of furniture and leant over, kneeling with one knee on the mattress. I moved the towel to have a better look and noticed to my relief that it was breathing and just vast asleep.
And then I noticed what was troubling him so much.
The baby looked nothing like me. And by that I also meant it didn't even look like a hedgehog.
It was Black Arms.
It shared Shadow's colour scheme of red and black, it had what looked like his hairstyle, but its muzzle was a pale white with no visible nose, it had smooth reptilian skin instead of fur. It also had an exoskeleton of what looked like soft armor plating, similar but more so than that one Eclipse alien's crest. And it had an elongated tail like that Eclipse character Shad told me about too.
It was definitely Black Arms. And a boy, it looks like.
"I think my body made this one all on its own. I don't know how long ago, but it apparently didn't need a long time to grow." Shadow stated, breaking the silence that hung in this room as he approached the bed, clearly taking steps with difficulty.
"Wait, a sec. You just gave birth, didn't you? All on your own, without an epidural, without me?" I asked, shocked that he was still on his feet when he so clearly could fall over and pass out.
"Sonic-" I didn't let him finish as I grabbed him by his upper arms and dragged him to bed, wanting him to lie down.
"Get on the bed, Shadow. You look like you're about to faint." That wasn't a suggestion. The dark hedgehog must've known he couldn't argue with that as he crawled up on the bed and plopped down on his side, curling up just a bit around his baby.
He was totally spend, not up for a confrontation or questions. Those would have to come later.
So I did the first thing that came to mind as I watched my lover try so hard to stay awake. I kicked my shoes off and lied down next to him, keeping the newborn between us. It took him off guard, but he didn't question it.
"I bet he's gonna be wicked fast, though. When he is, he's definitely mine." I wondered out loud, catching his attention as he had been close to dozing off.
"Sonic?" He called my name in confusion, asking me to elaborate.
"Listen, Shad, you obviously didn't cheat on me and we don't really know what's going on here, but that kid's mine. Alien or not, related by blood or not. I've been watching him grow in you, the love of my life, for the past two months. That's not nothing." Upon hearing my words, Shadow's crimson eyes widened as he stared back at me. Apparently he hadn't expected me to accept his son.
"Do you mean it?" He asked, truly hoping I did.
"Shad, I love you. So much. Just cause I didn't help make him doesn't mean I'm not his dad. He's mine just as much he's yours." I told him that blood didn't matter to me, that I couldn't care less for the newborn's origins and heritage. He just needed to be my mate's, needed to be a part of him, that is what truly mattered to me
"Sonic." Shadow wanted to lean over our son, but I didn't let him as he literally shook from the effort to reach me. So I did it instead. Leaning over to him, I pressed my lips against his in a deep kiss, which Shadow responded to with all his heart.
When we parted, I made sure to lie back down carefully, minding the newborn pup lying between us. He did fidget a little, but otherwise stayed still and took a near fistful of his own hand to slobber on.
"I know the Black Arms don't exactly have a good reputation, but I know you'll keep him on a straight path, I have no doubts about that. So next time, just tell me instead of worrying me to death, 'kay? Besides, I can always beat your bod to the punch in another couple of months." I asked, to which he nodded with a small smile, huffing in amusement at my jab.
It was than a yawn broke through, a reminder that my boyfriend was still tired. It was about time he got some sleep.
"Affirmative. I love you, Sonic." Shadow said, reaching over to place a hand on my cheek briefly.
"I love you too, Shadow. Apparently more than you realize." That last part was a joke, but that didn't make my feelings any less genuine.
Picking our boy up, to which he nuzzled his muzzle into his mother's touch, Shadow came to lie closer to me. With our infant sleeping on his chest, he laid his head to rest on mine and allowed me to wrap an arm around him.
Finding a comfortable spot for the first time in a month, Shad quickly fell asleep. With those two now asleep, there was nothing left for me to do. I couldn't move with those two snuggled up against me and my unwillingness to rouse either one of them, so boredom soon caught up and I eventually followed them to slumberland.
With someone like Shadow, checking up on them with a professional could wait a little while.
