Not sure if this should be mature or adult.", "writing": "Spawning 1\n\nShadow's POV\n\nI yawned tiredly as i listened to the commander going on and on about the failed mission me and my team mates had just returned from. He lectured us about how we handled it wrong, how it should've gone, etc. He told us what our exact moves should've been, but we were hardly listening. The past three weeks we had constant missions. If we had just completed one, we had another one waiting for us at the base. It was like this for the past three weeks and it had exhausted us. Our last few missions had failed. The commander was already tired of us messing up and gave us lecture after lecture, but we weren't listening. We were half asleep. All we heard was gibberish being spewed.\nMy eyes were falling closed and my head fell forward and shot back upward as i tried my best to stay awake. Rouge was already far away in dreamland. I wanted nothing more than to follow her, but i knew that someone had to wake her up so we could go home and get some rest after he was done.\nThe commander sighed and looked at us when he finally stopped rambling. He watched as Rouge slept and i was slowly losing conciousness. I muttered something as i gave up on fighting the exhaustion and slowly dozed of. The commander cleared his throat rather loudly and i jumped awake at the sound. Rouge slowly woke up when the sound reached her sensitive ears. \"What happened?\" She asked me and looked around disorientated. \"hmm?\" I hummed in confusion as i had a hard time giving a meaning to her question and figuring out exactly what she had asked me.\n\"Agent Rouge? Agent Shadow?\" The commander called for us to take hold of our attention. We straightened in our seat and faced him. \"I can see that you two are quite exhausted.\" He said. \"I have to admit that i am giving the two of you much more than you can handle. So i will give you two weeks off.\" He said. \"Really?\" Rouge asked. The commander sighed and nodded. He was obviously not liking this. \"You're dismissed.\" The commander said and left the room.\n\"Finally!\" Rouge said and stretched her tired muscles. \"I thought he was never going to shut up.\" I said and stood up before stretching my own muscles. \"Neither did i.\" She said and stood up aswell. \"Come on, let's go home.\" I said and walked towards the door. I took hold of the door knob and twisted it, but i loosened my hold on the knob as i gasped and placed a hand on my lower stomache when i felt an intense sting. \"What's wrong?\" Rouge asked in concern. The sting slowly faded and i looked at her. \"It's nothing. I'm sure that i got up to fast or something.\" I said and turned the knob and left the room. Rouge followed me closely behind.\nThe walk home was long, but we finally came back home. Rouge used her key to open the door and let us in. After she got inside she locked the door again and continued to walk up the stairs to her bedroom to change into more comfortable clothing while i made my way to the kitchen to quickly quench my thirst before going to sleep. I placed the glass in the sink and quickly made my way into the hallway. I hung my trenchcoat up on the coat hanger and ran up the stairs.\nI walked into the bedroom. \"Goodnight, Rouge!\" I yelled at her to make sure that she had heard me. When i heard my call returned is when i closed my door and dressed out of my clothing untill i only wore my boxers. I placed them on my desk chair and planned on washing them tomorrow. I dropped down flat on my stomache on my bed and snuggled my muzzle into the pillow. A content sigh left my lungs as my eyes closed. I sat up and took my blanket and covered my body with it. I laid down and curled up as i snuggled underneath it. I had a slight headache as i was so tired. I shut my eyelids again and slowly dozed off.\nThe next morning i woke up from my slumber slowly. I uncurled and laid on my back as i allowed myself the time i needed to wake up. My eyes opened and i looked up to the ceilling. I stretched my arms, back and legs before relaxing myself and sitting up in my bed. I yawned and looked around in my room. I threw my legs off of the side and pushed myself up, but i dropped back down with a gasp as i felt a sting in my lower stomache. \"What the.....\" I muttered and placed a hand on the spot.\n\"That was weird.\" I muttered when i felt the sting slowly fade. It took me by surprise, but i quickly made myself forget about it as i decided that it was nothing to be worried about. I pushed myself up again and approached my closet. I opened the closet doors and searched for some clothes to wear. The door closed again and i made my way into the bathroom. I took a quick warm shower, brushed my teeth and dressed myself up after drying my fur and quills.\nI made my way down the stairs and into the kitchen. I noticed that Rouge, like usual, wasn't up yet. I decided to set up the table before getting myself a hot cup of coffee. Not alot of time had passed before i was sitting on the couch and enjoying my first cup of coffee this morning. I turned the tv on and watched the news as i waited for Rouge to wake up and come down from her room. I winced when i felt a sting for the fourth time that morning. What was up with those? Why was i feeling stinging pain in my lower belly? Was i getting sick? Did i hurt myself during yesterday's mission?\n\"Is something the matter?\" Rouge asked as she came down the stairs to find me almost bent over in pain. \"No, it's nothing.\" I denied, but i failed to convince her when my face was contorted in pain. Rouge's eyes narrowed in concern and she quickly sat down on the couch next to me and rested a hand on my shoulder and the other on my hand that was resting on my stomache. \"Shadow, if it hurts this much, than you need to see a doctor.\" She said as she heard my wince. \"No, i'm fine. I probably just strained myself.\" I reasoned. She didn't want to listen, but she knew that arguing with me about this was pointless. She sighed. \"Shadow, atleast promise me that if they don't go away, you'll see the help of a doctor?\" She asked. \"I promise.\" I said. She smiled as she knew that i never backed down from my promises.\n\"Come on, let's eat some breakfast.\" Rouge said smilling comforting and stood up. \"I'll pass this time.\" I said and put the cup down on the coffee table. \"I kind of lost my appetite.\" I said and kept my hand on my belly despites the pain being gone for now. \"I see.... Well, if you get hungry, just tell me and i'll fix you something to eat.\" My friend said with sympathy. \"Thanks, but you don't have to.\" I replied. \"Oh don't worry about it, honey, i would love to do it.\" She said. Her concern for my well being making her ready to give me some sort of special treatement. \"i'll be fine don't worry.\" I tried to reassure her. \"Just tell me when you feel it again.\" She said and got up from the couch. The bat walked into the kitchen and and prepared her breakfast.\nAbout a week passed by. I was walking past the various shelves in a supermarket as it was about time that either me or Rouge went grocery shopping. Rouge had gone over to her boyfriend, Knuckles, so it was up to me to get some food in our house. I read the little shopping list for the so maniest time today. \"Milk.\" I muttered to myself and searched for the milk products.\nI held onto one of the shelves as i felt another strong sting in my lower belly. This one being exceptionally painfull. \"Are you okay, shadow?\" A familiar voice asked. I looked over my shoulder and saw Sonic standing not to far away from me. He watched me in concern as he rarely saw me doubled over in pain. I nodded and grimaced. \"Do you want me to take you to a doctor?\" He asked. \"No! What is it with you guys trying to send me to a doctor?\" I asked and straightened myself. \"It looked like it hurt.\" Sonic reasoned. \"I don't need a doctor. I'll be just fine, faker.\" I said and walked into the direction of the milk shelves. Sonic's ears lowered a little in concern as he watched me walk off towards the final item on my list.\nAfter the last item was added to my bag, i went to the cash register and took my wallet to pay for the groceries. \"That's a coincidence! Nice to see you here to.\" A voice said behind me. I turned around to see the cobalt hero i met only a few minutes ago standing behind me. \"Sonic..... What're you doing here?\" I asked. \"I'm here to pay for my groceries.\" He answered. 'I guess that was a stupid question.' I told myself mentally. \"That's quite alot you've got there, Shadz.\" Sonic said as he had a lack of topics to talk about. \"Yeah, it is quite alot for two poeple. It's gone surprisingly quick to.\" I answered and looked at all the items i needed. Sonic chuckled upon my statement.\n\"That is quite surprising.\" Sonic said. \"Especially when you consider the fact that neither of us actually eat as much as it seems.\" I added and heard another soft chuckle. I turned away from the mobian hero and to the cashier. I asked for the price and paid for it. \"See ya!\" Sonic yelled after me when i walked to the exit and left the store.\nUpon returning home i discovered that Rouge had already returned from her seemingly short visit at Knuckles' place. \"Back home already? How did it go?\" She asked and looked up from her position on the couch. \"Just fine.\" I answered and made my way into the kitchen to put all the groceries away. \"Had any more pains in your belly?\" She asked as she followed me into the kitchen. \"A few.\" I answered as i refilled the cabinets. Rouge sat down on a chair and stayed silent. As if she waited for something.\n\"Why do you ask?\" I finally asked. It was obvious that she had been waiting for me to ask that question. Why else would she wait for me to finish in silence. \"Sonic send me a text message after you left the store. He's concerned and he told me to keep a close eyes on you.\" Rouge answered. Sonic was concerned? For me? That's a first.\n\"You never told me that you still have cramps.\" She said a bit in disbelieve. I had promised to go to a doctor when i was still hurting after a week, after all. \"They aren't that bad and-\" I started, but my sentence was cut of the middle. \"Not that bad? Sonic said you were practically doubling over in pain.\" She stated. I could understand her concern, but there was honestly nothing wrong with me. \"It's just a strain from the missions.\" I reasoned, but it didn't seem to convince her. \"if it was a strain from work than it should've been gone by now.\" She said. \"Atleast go to a doctor just for the sake of knowing that you're okay.\" Rouge asked with a slight glint of worry in her eyes.\nI sighed and leant against the kitchen counter. \"Fine.\" I said. \"Thank you.\" Rouge said as her heart was filled with relief when i told her that i would go and visit a doctor. \"i'll finish up here. You go and get an appointment with a doctor.\" Rouge said and pushed me out of the kitchen. \"I will! Don't be so pushy!\" I stated and approached the phone on the dresser. I heard rummaging in the kitchen and sighed again. I lifted the phone up from it's holder and dailed the number of our doctor. We knew our doctor pretty well. The work we did wasn't exactly the safest one around. We often came home with bruises, broken bones, burns, you name it, we had it at one point in our career. We often visited her because of it. It was rare that we came home without injuries.\nThe phone rang and i waited for someone to answer. It rang three times before an angelic voice answered. \"Hello, this is the Westopolis Clinic, how may i help you?\" The female assistent of the building asked. \"Hello, this is Shadow Robotnik.\" As soon as i finished that sentence i could hear her almost dropping the phone in shock. She was making quite a fuss towards her co-workers. I knew that poeple didn't like me, but she didn't need to throw a tantrum over it.\nIt took her exactly seven minutes before she calmed down. \"Hello?\" She said as she wasn't sure if i was still on the other side of the phone. \"Yeah, i'm still here.\" I said with a sigh. Rouge, who had finished up in the kitchen, stood next to me. Her hands rested on my shoulders and her ear was close to the phone so she could hear everything. She found the whole conversation amusing. \"H-How may i help you?\" The assistance stuttered. \"I would like to make an appointment with doctor Carthoff.\" I said and pressed my hand against my forehead. \"Uhm.... Right.... T-There's an opening in his schedule at 17:30.\" She said.\nI turned to look at Rouge to see if she agreed with the time of the appointment. She nodded in agreement to let me know that it was possible to go. \"Yeah, that's fine.\" I finally replied. \"Yeah. See you later.\" I said before hanging up and placing the phone back on it's holder. \"There. Appointment made. Are you happy?\" I asked the white bat standing next to me. She smiled and nodded before walking towards the couch. She sat down and picked her book back up.\nThe hours passed by quickly and before i knew it, it was five in the afternoone. Time to go to the doctor. I pulled my trenchcoat on and turned to the front door. \"Are you leaving?\" Rouge asked. \"I need to meet with the doctor in half an hour. I don't want to be late.\" I said. Rouge raised an eyebrow at my statement. Half an hour was stoll quite some time. Thinking that i wouldn't be on time was indeed a bit far fetched. \"I need to go. I don't wanna hurry. I'll be back later.\" I said and opened the fornt door. \"Fine, i'll see you later.\" Rouge said before closing the front door behind me.\nI walked down the sidewalk towards my destination. I liked taking walks so naturally i took my time getting to the Clinic. It was only a ten minute walk from my home to the doctor's office. I had more than enough time to get there. But even though i took my time with the walk, i still arrived pretty early. I had to be here at 17:30, but i arrived here at 17:12. I walked into the waiting room and saw quite alot of poeple sitting in the room. They looked at me in surprise as they had not expected me to come walking into the room. I ignored the stares and sat down on one of the few empty chairs and waited for my turn to come.\n45 minutes, about 27 minutes after my appointment with doctor Carthoff, passed by before it was finally my turn. The doctor, a human woman with brown hair and brown eyes, opened the door and called my name. I stood up from my seat and followed her to her office.\n\"Shadow, it's been a while since i've last seen you.\" Dr. Carthoff said as she sat down on her desk chair. I hung my trenchcoat over a chair and sat down opposite to her. \"What's the matter.\" She asked. \"I've been having pains in my lower stomache area. I thought that it was a strain from the non-stop missions, but almost a week as passed by and Rouge is starting to think that it's something else.\" I explained. \"I see.\" The doctor mumbled. \"Why don't you get up and lie down on the examination table.\" She said. I stood up from my chair and walked over to the examination table. I laid down on top of it and waited for the human doctor to come.\n\"Now, let's find out what's bothering you. Can you lift your shirt for me?\" The doctor asked. I did as she asked and lifted my shirt up. I watched her as she felt around on my belly to locate exactly where it hurt. I winced when she pressed on my lower stomach. She pulled her hands back and crossed her arms in front of her chest as she thought. \"Hmm.\" She hummed. \"Are you sure those are stomache cramps?\" She asked. \"Yeah, what else could it be?\" I asked.\nThe doctor thought again. What made her act this way? It was probably just a strain or the flu or something. Nothing serious. \"Do you have Diarrhea?\" She asked. \"Thankfully not.\" I said with one of my ears twitching. \"What do you think it is?\" I asked. I was getting a bit nervous since she took so long to answer.\n\"You can take your seat again.\" Doctor Carthoff said. I pulled my shirt back down and hopped off of the examination table. I walked back towards the desk and sat down on the chair. \"The doctor sat back down on her desk chair aswell. \"Can you finally tell me what's wrong?\" I asked. \"I think that your intestinal flora is a upset. I suggest that you eat light meals and come back in three weeks.\" The doctor advised. \"I will.\" I said and paid her for her medical expertise. I told her goodbye and left for home.\nThe days went by slowly. My stomache aches didn't go away, but they didn't get any worse either. Rouge had tried to make me go to a doctor again after another week had passed. She was practically forcing me when they were still plaguing me after another week had passed by. But it wasn't untill a month in total had passed before the stomache aches became less frequent. I was reliefed beyond believe when i woke up in the morning and had a day with significantly less cramps than usual.\nI thought that this whole ordeal was finally coming to an end. Unforunatly, i had to return to the doctor again, like i said i would three weeks ago. And she wasn't so certain that this was over. Especially with my cramps taking so long to go away. \"How're you feeling today?\" Doctor Carthoff asked. \"A bit better. The stings are going away.\" I answered and crossed my leg over the other. \"That's good to hear. Do you mind to lie down on the examination table?\" The doctor asked. I got up from the chair and laid down on the table once more. I lifted my shirt up and waited for the doctor to come. She came quickly and repeated the actions she did three weeks ago.\nHer eyes narrowed and her brows furrowed as her hands settled on my lower belly and she felt that this particular place was a bit hard. \"And you're saying that the cramps are fading?\" She asked. \"Yeah. Why? Is it something serious?\" I asked and lifted my head up from the hard surface and looked at my belly.\nDoctor Carthoff walked away from the examination table and towards her cabinets. She searched around untill she took a box our of it and placed it on the counter. She opened it and pulled out an empty syringe. I pulled my shirt down and sat back up. \"give me your arm.\" She said as she approached me. I showed my arm and the doctor wrapped an elastic around my arm. With cotton she swiped my inner elbow with disinfectant and searched for a vein through my fur.\"Why are you taking blood?\" I questioned her secrecy. She didn't answer. My ears bent backwards as i did not like this at all.\nDoctor Carthoff found a vein and punctured it with the needle. I almost yelped. She pulled at the other end of the syringe and took a small amount of blood from my arms before pulling the syringe back out and pressing a small piece of cotton against the small puncture wound. I took over from her and pressed the cotton against my inner elbow. She put the blood away to send it away and let it get tested.\n\"Is something the matter?\" I asked when she approached me again. \"We will find out when the blood test results get back.\" Doctor Carthoff said and tidied up the examination table. \"Will it take long for the results to come?\" I asked as i got off of the table. \"That depends.\" She answered. \"Depends on what?\" I asked and stood in front of her desk. \"Depends weither the lab is busy or not. If they aren't to busy than we'll have the results in a week.\" She said. \"And if they are busy?\" I asked. \"That depends on how busy they are. We've had blood results come in three months after they were taken.\" The doctor said. \"That long?\" I muttered. \"Yes, it's annoying, i know, but there is nothing i can do about it.\" The doctor said and sat down on her desk chair.\nCarthoff was writing something down on a prescription paper and gave it to me. I took it and read it. \"Another week off? But i've been staying home on yours and Rouge's demand and my weeks off ended two weeks ago! I need to get back to work!\" I said a bit in disbelieve. What should've been two weeks away from work, had become a whole month away from work. The commander didn't like it and neither did i. But Rouge and her several calls to the doctor had made sure i had stayed home all this time. I didn't like staying home because there was little i could do. So staying away from work for another week was not something i looked forward to.\n\"I know that you're tired of staying home, but i strongly advise that you do. If the test results aren't here by the end of the week then i will allow you to go back to work.\" Carthoff said and placed her elbows on her desk. Her fingers intertwining as she looked up to me. \"Fine.\" I muttered much to my dismay and pulled my trenchcoat on. \"I'll see you soon.\" Carthoff said after i had paid her and shook my hand. \"Bye.\" I simply said and left the Clinic.\n\"Another week at home? The house will never be as clean as it will be by the end of this week.\" Rouge said and giggled softly as she apparently found her own joke funny. \"I can't believe it either. The commander is going to be pissed by the time i do get to go back to work.\" I sighed and looked up to her from my position at the kitchen table. \"I'm sure that he'll understand. There must be a reason why she keeps you home for so long.\" Rouge said and leant against the table. \"If there really is a reason than i hope Carthoff will tell me what it is soon. Cause i don't see any reason why i need to stay home when i'm perfectly fine.\" I stated, but Rouge didn't seem convinced.\n\"Perfectly fine? Tell that to your past self who keeps complaining about cramps and stomache aches.\" Rouge said unimpressed and took her eyes away from the prescription and looked at me from the corners of her eyes. \"I didn't complain that much. And certainly not as much as Knuckles can.\" I muttered and sipped from my glass of water. \"Of course you didn't.\" Rouge teased with a smile tugging on her lips. \"You better warn the commander later today.\" She said. \"I can't wait till i do.\" I sighed and she laughed softly.\nThe commander had a temper to say the least. He was easily angered and the fact that one of his best agents hadn't shown up for a whole month and didn't plan on doing so for another week wasn't really helping either. It wouldn't surprise me if he blew up as soon he heard my voice on the other end of the phone. I did not look forward to calling him and hearing him yell in my ears untill i was certain that i was deaf. \"You should call him.\" Rouge repeated and left the kitchen.\n\"I guess i should.\" I muttered to myself and got up from my chair. I emptied my glass and put it in the sink before making my way into the livingroom. I walked towards the dresser with Rouge's eyes glued on my back as she watched me from her position on the couch and picked up the phone. I dailed the number of the G.U.N headquarters and waited for someone to pick up. \"Hello? Who is this?\" An assistent on the other side of the phone line asked a bit rude. \"It's Shadow.\" I answered. The voice sighed in annoyence. \"Shadow, you know that the commander hates it when you call from a public phone line.\" The agitated assistent said. \"I'm calling from Rouge's phone. So this isn't exactly a public line.\" I answered. My answer seemed to agitate him even further.\n\"Why are you calling?\" The voice asked. He obviously didn't want to talk to me for a very long and therefore wanted to end our conversation quickly. \"I'm calling to report to the commander that i need to stay home for another week.\" I said and heard the assistent let out another sigh. \"The commander will not like this.\" He muttered before rudely hanging up on the phone. \"Bye.... I guess.\" I muttered and placed the phone back in it's original place on the holder.\n\"How did it go?\" Rouge asked as soon as the phone was back in place. \"It went pretty well. One of his assistents answered instead of the commander himself. I'm glad to know that i won't be the one being yelled at.\" I said while facing her. \"Aren't you lucky.\" Rouge said and returned her attention to her book. I approached her and dropped down on the couch next to her. \"I guess.\" I said and reeled my head back against the couch. I lifted my head up a bit as i read the cover of Rouge's book. \"You've got to be kidding me. Fifty Shades of Grey?\" I asked as i read the title of the famous book. \"Well, you know how many women like this book and i wanted to give it a try.\" She explained. \"I see..... Well, how is it?\" I asked. \"It's actually not that bad.\" She said returned back to her book.\nA few moments of silence passed. Rouge placed her bookmark on the page she was last at and closed her book. She placed the book on her lap. Her eyes moved and settled on me. I was leaning back agains the couch. I was a bit tired, so i closed my eyes to rest them for a few moments. \"Tired already?\" Rouge asked. \"A bit.\" I muttered. \"It's only in the afternoone. You're tired alot lately, aren't you?\" She asked. I opened my eyes and looked up to the ceilling as i thought. \"I guess that i am more tired than usual lately.\" I muttered more to myself than to her. \"It's probably because of the lack of excercise.\" I reasoned and closed my eyes again. \"If you're tired than you should go ahead and go to bed.\" Rouge suggested.\nI thought about her proposition. Maybe taking a small nap wasn't such a bad idea. \"Maybe that's for the best.\" I answered with a yawn. \"I'll be back later.\" I said while getting up from the couch. \"Sleep tight, hun.\" Rouge replied. I walked into the hallway and up the stairs and quickly arrived into my bedroom. I sat down on the edge of my bed and kicked my shoes off before lying down. I turned to lay on my side and closed my eye lids. It didn't take long before i fell asleep.\nWhen i had awoken, i almost immediatly realised that i had slept the whole day and night away. I didn't know that i was this tired yesterday. I sat up and gazed at the clock. It was five in the morning. Even though it was still early in the morning, i knew that i had to get up. I had slept more than i usually did, so getting up this early didn't sound like such a bad idea.\nWith a yawn i sat up on the edge of my bed. I rubbed in my eyes to get rid of the slightly blury vision. My ears twitched and listened for any sounds coming from within the house. It was completely silent. Rouge must still be asleep. I pushed myself up and searched for clean clothes to wear since i was still wearing the ones from the day before. I walked into the bathroom and placed them on the dresser next to the sink and undressed. I left them on the floor to clean them up later on and stepped inside the shower. I pulled the shower curtain behind me and turned the knob of the shower head. I sighed in content when the water hit my fur on my back. My body relaxed under the warmth of the water. I quickly rinsed my fur and cleaned every nook and cranny in my body before turning the water off. I stepped out of the shower, dried my fur and dressed up in the fresh clothing articles that i had brought along.\nAfter tidyingup the bathroom, i hung the towels and old clothes over my arm and walked out of the room. I walked down the stairs and into the laundry room. I stuffed them into the washer, chose the right program and turned the machine on. I walked out of the laundry room and into the kitchen. I made myself a cup of coffee before sitting down on the couch. I turned the tv on and decided to wait till Rouge woke up.\nHours passed by. It was eight in the morning when Rouge finally decided to come down. \"Good morning.\" I greeted. \"Morning to you to.\" She returned and walked into the kitchen. I almost grinned as her bad mood reminded me that she was not at all a morning person. I heard rummaging in the kitchen as she made herself a coffee aswell. I heard her curse as she burned herself on the coffee pot and chuckled. \"Need help?\" I called out to her. She refused and cursed again.\nAfter a while Rouge came walking back into the livingroom with a cup of coffee in her hands. \"Took you long enough.\" I teased as she sat down next to me. \"Shut it.\" Rouge snapped back and sipped from her hot coffee. She winced and cursed again when she burned her lip and tongue. I smiled as my small tease had gotten the desired reaction.\n\"Had a nice nap?\" Rouge asked and looked at me. Her mood had changed for the better after a few sips of her cup of coffee when it had cooled down a little. \"Yeah, i had slept the whole day and night away. I had no idea that i was that tired.\" I answered. \"Maybe it's because you've been sick for these past weeks.\" She said. \"That makes sense.\" I replied and stretched my arms and back as i felt a bit stiff. As i did stretch my shirt was pulled up revealing my belly and lower back.\n\"Are you putting on weight?\" Rouge suddenly asked in surprise. \"What?\" I asked in confusion and looked at her as i dropped my arms to my side. \"You're putting on weight.\" She said. I just looked at her in confusion. Rouge pulled me up with my arm and dragged me out into the hallway. We walked up the stairs to the upper floor. She pushed me into her bedroom and in front of her tall mirror. \"I don't see any diffirences.\" I said as i watched my reflection in the mirror. \"Pull your shirt up.\" She ordered. I did as she told and looked at my belly in the mirror. I still didn't see any diffirences untill the bat took my arm again and pushed me to make me stand side ways in front of the mirror.\n\"What the....\" I muttered as i saw a small, barely noticable, bump on my belly. Was i really putting on weight? But that was impossible. I was designed to burn calories ridiculously fast! I could eat as much as i want and my weight would always be the same. It was a real pain in the ass. Because if i didn't eat so much or if i didn't eat anything at all, my body would burn the calories i already had. Meaning that i would get on the skinny side pretty quick. That was one of the many flaws that Gerald had overlooked when creating me. But never had i gained weight before. So where did the bump come from?\nA week passed by. The doctor had not called back for the results of the blood test and so i was finally allowed to go back to work. \"Are you sure you want to do this? I think that it's better to wait at home for the doctor's results.\" Rouge said as we entered through the front entrance of the G.U.N headquarters. She knew of my inability of gaining weight and that almost unnoticable bump on my belly worried her. \"Rouge, the results can take up to three months before they're here. I've already been at home for a month, i can't stay at home for three more. I'll lose my job.\" I told her, but she didn't seem to take my excuse. \"So what? You're smart, you can easily find another job!\" She countered me with her argument, but it would not work.\nWe made our way into the briefing room and found the commander there waiting for us. \"Agent Shadow, nice for you to show up for once.\" He grumbled and didn't bother to greet us or even look at us. He wasn't exactly in a good mood. We took our seat on one of the many chairs in the briefing room and waited for our assignment. The commander stood up from his seat, folded his hand behind his back and looked at us.\n\"You're new assignment is an ordinary one. We're suspecting that Dr. Eggman is planning a new attack on Westopolis. You're mission is to infiltrate his base and find out what he's up to.\" The commander ordered. \"Sounds easy enough.\" I muttered. \"The two of you will leave this instance. Dismissed.\" He said and left the room. \"brief.\" I heard Rouge mutter to herself before getting up from her chair. I did the same and followed her out of the room.\n\"Do you know where Eggman's new base is?\" I wondered as we left the base again. \"believe it or not, but he's been in the same base he was last in.\" Rouge answered. \"He is? Guess he's tired of moving time and time again.\" I muttered to no one in particular. \"I guess that's where we'll head next.\" I said before igniting my hovershoes and skating over to our next destination. Rouge used her black wings to lift her off the ground and fly over to the base.\nIt didn't take us long to arrive at Eggman's base. It was in a forested area near the foot of a mountain. Just like all his other bases it stood out in it's enviremont and was therefore pretty easy to find. It was even easier to infiltrate and Eggman's robots weren't exactly hard to beat either. This mission was going to fly by. The base was a big dome shaped building with a bow shaped front entrance. A ventilation shaft protruded from the top. That was our way in.\n\"Rouge?\" I called for her. \"I'm on it.\" Rouge said and took my hands when i reached upwards to her. Rouge brought both of us above the Egg-dome and dropped me when i curled into a ball and spindashed through the metal frame that covered the opening of the ventilation shaft. I coughed from all the dust that had gathered here over the months. I crouched down to my knees and crawled through the shaft. A set of footsteps was heard as Rouge landed on the spot i had previously been crouching and followed me.\nWe crawled through the several ventilation shafts untill i stopped at one of the many frames we had come across. \"What is it? Are we there?\" Rouge asked and tried to look over my houlder. I used my claws to loosen the screws and pulled the frame up from the opening and moved it away. I peeked out of the shaft and looked around. Eggman wasn't here. \"We're here.\" I answered and jumped down. I hit the metal floor and looked around. \"It's safe.\" I said and Rouge jumped out aswell. She made her way over to the computer and immediatly tried to hack into it. I stood guard by the door and listened for anyone approaching. \"Almost...\" Rouge muttered as she tried all she could to hack into Robotnik's computer system.\n\"Aha! There we go!\" Rouge exclaimed as she finally got through the security system. \"G.U.N was right! Eggman really is planning something.\" She said and typed something on the keyboard. \"Downloading all files now.\" She said. My ear twitched as i heard something in the hallway. I pressed my ear against the door and heard footsteps approaching. \"He's coming!\" I stated and turned to her. \"I'm almost done.\" She said and i listened again. The footsteps were close now. \"Rouge, he's coming!\" I yelled.\n\"I'm done!\" Rouge stated and pulled the disk out at the same time that the door opened to reveal the rotund scientist himself. \"Shadow? Rouge?\" Dr. Eggman said in confusion. I took Rouge's wrist, pushed Eggman out of the way and bolted out the door. I ran as fast as i could towards the front entrance. Heavy footsteps and rattling of machinery was heard behind us. \"He called for help!\" Rouge said and looked behind her as she used her wings to follow me at this speed. I ran towards the door in front of us, but a robot broke through it. I gasped in surprise and made a right turn. I followed the hallway and arrived into the hangar. \"There!\" Rouge yelled and pointed towards the entrance of the Egg-dome. I ran for the exit, but a robot cut me off. \"Damn.\" I muttered and stopped. \"Now give me that disk and neither of you will get hurt.\" Eggman said as he had us cornered.\nRouge flew up and screw kicked a robot against it's head, making it stumble backwards. Chaos energy gathered in the palm of my hand. I yelled \"Chaos Spear\" and threw it at the nearest robot. The robot exploded on impact as the attack was much more powerfull than usual. \"What the.\" I said in surprise and looked at my hands. \"How did you do that?\" Rouge asked in surprise. \"I....I don't know.\" I said and faced her. Another explosion was heard and we turned to look in that direction.\nThe smoke slowly vanished to reveal the epitome of speed and heroism disguised in blue fur and quills. \"Sonic?\" I muttered and turned his attention to me. \"Rouge? Shadow? You guys are here to?\" Sonic asked as he was quite surprised to find the two of us here. \"That doesn matter! We'll explain later.\" I said and threw another Chaos Spear at a robot. Sonic's eyes widened a little as he also noticed the sudden change in my Chaos energy. He looked at Rouge, but she just shrugged before kicking another robot. Sonic turned his attention to one of the remaining robots and spindashed right through it's chest.\nWe panted when the robots were down and out. \"Smooth sailing from here!\" Sonic said and ran towards the exit since he assumed that we had already gotten what we all came for. Both me and Rouge followed him out. Eggman smirked as he still had one more trick up his sleeve.\n\"Watch out!\" Sonic yelled and ducked to the floor right as a fist came flying towards us. Rouge wasn't so close to the new arrival and wasn't hurt either, but i wasn't so lucky. I had not seen the fist in time. It hit me against my torso and i couldn't sworn i felt something inside me crack as i was flung quite a few metres away. I slid on the ground another metre as i came to a stop. A gaint robot stomped into the hangar. It had the colors and the logo that were typical on an Eggman robot. It had extra armor and everything about it was huge. And so was the strenght it used.\nMy face contorted in pain as it felt like my lower belly was on fire. My arms wrapped around my waist and i curled up in pain. \"Shadow!\" Rouge yelled in shock and panic. Sonic growled in anger. \"You make sure that he's okay. I'll get rid of this robot.\" He growled and ran to the robot. Rouge flew over to me and sat on her knees besides me. \"Shadow? Are you okay?\" She asked and rested her hand on my shoulder. \"It hurts.\" I grimaced as a small pool of blood gathered underneath the lower half of my body. \"You're bleeding! But where?\" Rouge wondered as she checked me for wounds, but found none. \"Sonic, he's bleeding!\" She yelled over to him. The said hedgehog turned to us right before getting hit himself and flung into the nearest wall.\nIt didn't have much effect as Sonic was right back on his feet. He speeded back over to the gigantic robot and spindashed against it's armor plated chest. He bounced back as he could not get through the extra armor plating on the first try. But he still had left quite a dent in it. Sonic growled and spindashed against it again, making it stumble backwards and made it tumble to the metal floor. He bounced of again and immediatly spindashed through it's chest. The hedgehog's rage had enabled him to defeat the robot much faster then should be possible.\nSonic climbed out of the hole he had created and and jumped off of the robot. He stumbled a little as he was a bit shaken up from that last attack and approached us when he found his footing again. \"How is he?\" Sonic asked and went to his knees next to Rouge. \"I don't know. He's bleeding from somewhere, but i don't know where.\" Rouge said. Sonic tried to check for any injuries, but i stopped him. \"Don't touch me!\" I snapped as moving me hurted my lower body. But Sonic didn't need to check. He already saw where the blood came from. \"Are you bleeding through your pants?\" He asked in disbelieve. \"What?\" I winced. \"You need to go to the hospital.\" He said while lifting me up in his arms and ran towards the nearest hospital. \"Get back here Sonic! I'm not done with you!\" Eggman yelled as the three of us escaped the building. Sonic didn't listen and just kept on running.\nWithin ten minutes we arrived at the nearest hospital. Sonic called for help and a doctor immediatly rushed over to us. Sonic followed his instructions and laid me on the bed in one of the rooms. I sat up as Rouge helped me to take my trenchcoat off. \"How're you feeling?\" She asked once my trenchcoat hung over her arm. \"The pain is almost gone. I barely feel anything there.\" I said as i laid down like the doctor told me to. \"I'm sorry, but i need to ask you two to wait outside.\" The doctor said. Sonic and Rouge reluctantly left me in the room after giving one last glance at me. \"Don't worry, we will take good care of him.\" The doctor said as he shooed them out of the room.\nAn hour and a half passed by before the doctor came walking out of the room. He wheeled the bed i laid in out of the room and to the elevator for employees. \"Wait! Where are you going?\" Sonic asked as he and Rouge followed us. The doctor stayed behind as another doctor and a nurse or two continued their way to the elevator. \"We found a disturbance in his lower belly. It might've caused the bleeding and we're on our way to surgically remove it.\" He explained the two. \"Listen, i need to go now. We'll update you about the situation when we're done.\" He said and quickly hopped up on the elevator before it left. Sonic sighed and sat back down on his seat. \"I hate all this waiting.\" Rouge complained and sat down on the chair next to him. \"You're not the only one.\" Sonic said and leant back against his chair.\nThe elevator came to a halt on the next floor. The doors opened and the bed was wheeled out of the elevator and into the nearest free surgical room. \"What's going on?\" I asked and hoped that at least somebody would want to tell me what the hell was going on. \"The doctor found something in your lower region that needs to be removed. We're preparing for surgery now.\" A nurse informed me while the two doctors got ready. \"Found what?\" I asked. My voice was a bit muffled as she placed a mask over my muzzle. The air the mask provided me had some sort of sedative in it instead of ordinary oxygen. \"We don't know, that's what we're going to find out. All we know is that it's abnormal and needs to be removed before it can cause you serious harm.\" She explained while i was slowly starting to feel tired. I tried to answer something, but only a mix between a groan and a bunch of gibberish left my lips as my eye lids started to feel heavy. \"Just sleep. You'll see that when you wake up, you'll be in your own room on your way to recovery.\" The nurse comforted me before i fell into a deep sleep.\nThree hours had passed by when i slowly woke up. My eyes opened for a moment before closing again. They still felt so heavy. I moaned when i tried to say something to catch somebody's attention. \"Hey, you're awake. \"I heard a male voice say. I moaned again as i tried to ask who was in the room with me. I tried to sit up, but someone held me down. \"Shadow, don't strain yourself, you need to rest.\" I heard him say. My eyes finally opened half way and stayed open for once. \"Sonic?\" I said once i recognized the cobalt hero in front of me. \"Oh good, you remember me.\" Sonic's sighed in relief and leant on the rails of the hospital bed i laid on. I tried to say something, but i couldn't form any words.\n\"The doctor hasn't told us anything yet. But your doctor, doctor Carthoff, came by to help him with whatever the hell it was they took out of you.\" Sonic said. \"Carthoff? Where's Rouge?\" I was finally able to ask. \"She needed to report back to the commander, but she'll be back as soon as she's done.\" He said. \"What did they do during the surgery?\" I asked as i could not remember why they performed a surgery on me. Sonic looked at me with a blank expression as he had just mentioned the reason, but i hadn't been fully awake. \"They had to remove something from inside of you.\" Sonic explained.\n\"Inside of me?\" I repeated. \"Yeah, why?\" Sonic asked as he watched me lift the blanket up. I reached underneath it and pulled the hospital dress up. I saw a line of stitches on my lower belly. But that wasn't the only thing that i noticed. The bump was gone. That couldn't have been a good sign. \"Shadow?\" Sonic asked as he noticed the absent look in my eyes. \"Shadow!\" He called for me again. \"Hmm? What?\" I asked and lowered the blanket. \"Is something the matter? When i mentioned that thing inside of you, you sort of spaced out.\" He said. \"Oh.... It's nothing.\" I answered and snuggled underneath my blanket. \"I can understand that you want to rest. I'll be back later to check up on you.\" Sonic said and gave me a friendly pat on the shoulder before leaving. I watched him leave from the corners of my eyes before closing them and falling asleep once more.\nIt didn't take long before i was awoken again by the feeling of someone else in the room with me. The soft closing of the door confirmed my suspisions. \"Shadow? Are you awake?\" A new voice asked. I recognized the voice as the one from Doctor Carthoff and so i opened my eyes and looked up to her. \"Ah, you're awake. Good.\" Carthoff said and moved her eyes from me towards a clipboard she held in her arms. \"Carthoff?\" I asked in confusion upon seeing her. I guess Sonic was right. She really was here. The female doctor looked at me when i called her name. She noticed my tired and confused expression and decided to explain why she was here.\nCarthoff pulled something off of the clipboard and handed to me something that looked like a brown envelope. The upper part had been torn open before, but taped back closed. The doctor must've seen the results already. \"What's this?\" I asked and held it in front of me. \"It's the results of your blood test. I had recieved it through mail yesterday. I wanted to call you as soon as i read it, but on G.U.N they said that you were on a mission. Not to soon after Rouge called to tell me what happened to you. She was worried that it had something to do with the bump on your stomache.\" Carthoff explained. I wasn't really paying attention to her explanation. I was more interested in the envelope in my hands.\n\"You can open it if you want to.\" She said. I briefly looked at her before turning the envelope around and tearing the upper part open. I pulled one piece of paper out and read that it really was my blood test results. I read every word on it before looking at her in confusion. \"It's confusing, isn't it? It took me a while before i figured it out myself. I tried calling you as soon as i did.\" Carthoff said and extended her hand to me. I handed her the envelope back and she took it to look at it again. \"As you must've read, your Mobian DNA seemed to be normal, but your Black Arms DNA....\" Her voice slowly came to a stop there.\nCarthoff pulled something else from the clipboard and handed it to me. It was the statistics of my Black Arms DNA not to long after the Black Arms invasion. \"These statistics is what we think is normal for Black Arms such as yourself, but the one i got back from the blood test results has changed dramaticly.\" She said. \"It's as if your..... changing....\" She said. \"Changing? How?\" I asked confused about all of this. This didn't seem to make sense to me. \"The sudden change doesn't seem to affect you on the inside, but it does affect you on the inside. There is a drastic change with your hormones. There is a significant drop in what seems to be masculine hormones and a significant rise in what seems to be feminine hormones.\" She said.\n\"Feminine hormones? What does that mean?\" I asked and felt myself becoming a bit scared as i suspected where this conversation might lead to. \"Shadow.\" Carthoff started and looked down. She didn't know how to tell me this. Especially not after what had happened to me this morning. \"You might've been pregnant.\" She said and looked back up to me. My eyes widened as i watched her with a pure shock on my facial features.\nThe sound of a plastic cup of coffee falling to the floor made us known i wasn't the only one shocked to hear this. Carthoff looked at the door opening to see Rouge standing there frozen in shock. \"I see that the two of you need a moment alone. I'll be back later to discuss this matter with you.\" Carthoff said and gathered the envelope and statistics before leaving the two of us alone.\nIt took her a while, but Rouge finally snapped out of our shocked state. Rouge sighed and flattened her ears. She wore a saddened and sympathetic look in her eyes as she approached me. She pushed the rails down, sat down on the edge of the hospital bed and wrapped her arms around me and pulled me into a hug. \"I miscarried.\" I realised and Rouge's hold on my tightened. \"I'm so sorry, Shadow.\" She told me and stroked my quills in a comforting manner. \"Than.... what they took out of me.....\" I muttered and felt a pang of guilt and pain in my heart the deeper the news sank in. \"I'm so sorry.\" Rouge repeated.\nAfter what looked like a very long time, but was actually a minute or two, we pulled away. \"Everything'll be alright.\" Rouge said and placed her hands on my cheeks when i looked down and gave me a comforting smile. \"Do you want me to contact the father?\" I was completely taken by surprise when she asked that out of nowhere. The father? I had no idea who the father was or even could be. But there was a reason for that. \"I don't know.\" I muttered as quiet as i could ass i looked down almost in shame. Unfortunatly, Rouge's sensitive ears had heard me. \"Don't know?\" She repeated in shock and confusion. She was having a completely wrong image of me.\nShe was a bit reluctant to ask me the next question, but she knew she had to do it. \"Have you done it with, you know, more than one person for these past two months?\" Rouge carefully asked. \"Rouge, i'm many things, but i'm not a whore!\" I yelled as i felt a bit, rather alot, insulted by her question. \"I'm not judging you. Everyone makes mistakes even the Ultimate Lifeform.\" Rouge to make me feel better in confessing to her with who i had slept with, but that would not work with me. Especially since i know for sure that i have not slept with anyone. \"I haven't slept with anyone!\" I told her, but she didn't seem to buy it. I guess i couldn't blame here. Babies needed to come from somewhere.\nRouge was trying to be as patient as possible with me after what happened, but she was becoming a bit angry when i didn't confess anything to her. \"Shadow, listen-\" She started. \"No you listen! I have not slept with anyone! I'm still a virgin!\" I stated and seemed to catch her by surprise. \"Than how is this possible?\" She asked. \"I don't know how it happened either.\" I said and hung my shoulders. Rouge sighed.\nEverything was quiet between the two of us again. The silence between us was somewhat awkward and tense. Rouge's eyes fell on the spilled coffee and she remembered that she still had to clean that up. She stood up and walked into the small bathroom that was connected to my room. She tore off a few pieces of toilet paper and walked back out. She took the cup and cleaned the floor with the paper. She threw the cup and wet paper into the trash bin before walking out of the room. Probably to get a new cup of coffee.\nI watched her leave before closing my eyes. Despites having slept for quite a while and spending the last two hours in bed, i still felt exhausted. So it didn't take long before i fell into a deep sleep. Rouge came walking back with a new plastic cup only to find me in a deep slumber. Her ears flattened a little as she noticed that i was sleeping with a hand on my lower belly.\nTwo days later i was fired from the hospital. Sonic was nice enough to come and pick me up once i was dressed up and ready to leave. Even though i could get back home on my own, it was nice to have some company.\n\"How're you feeling?\" Sonic asked as we walked down the sidewalk. Just like Rouge and his friends, he had also recieved the news of my possible miscarriage. But unlike them, he wasn't so quick to judge me. Or he was atleast good at hiding it. \"I don't know. Strange.\" I answered. \"That's understandable. Not everyone goes through what you've been through.\" He said. The rest of the walk home was almost completely in silence. Only a few words were said, but with those few Sonic had made sure that i knew he was not judging me and he would be there if i needed him. Well, he's called a hero for a reason, isn't hhe?\nWe arrived at my and Rouge's house after a long walk. I opened the front door and met with a bunch of yelling coming from inside. The loud voices belonged to Knuckles and Rouge. They were having an argument about something. I heard my name being called several times. My ears moved into the direction of the sounds and i tried to silent. Knuckles, who had never liked me from the beginning, was trying to convince her that i was a bat influence on her and told her that he was worried of her ending up the same way as i did. That echidna was obviously one of many poeple who immediatly concluded that i was a slut who had a diffirent lover every single night.\n\"bastard.\" I growled and dropped my bag with blood drenched clothes on the floor before running up the stairs to my room. I didn't want to face either one of them right now. Sonic sighed when he had heard the conversation aswell. He closed the front door behind him, swung the bag over his shoulder and walked inside the livingroom. Knuckles and Rouge jumped upon seeing him arrive. \"Can't the two of you argue in silence? Shadow heard everything.\" Sonic told the two mobians before leaving the livingroom and searched for the laundry room.\nRouge left Knuckles alone in the room and followed Sonic. The hedgehog kneeled down in front of the washer and dumped the clothes inside. He closed the door, chose the right program and the right laundry detergent before turning the machine on. \"I didn't know you could with these things.\" Rouge said and leant against the door frame. \"Of course i know how to work with them. What else happens to my and Tails' clothes.\" He stated. Rouge had to admit that it was a pretty valid argument.\n\"How is Shadow?\" Rouge asked after a while. \"How do you think he is? He's dealing with the fact that he might've lost his first child that seems to come out of nowhere, practically everyone is calling him a dirty manwhore, my friends, except for Tails and Cream, don't really seem to give any support and his only friend is being convinced to leave him by her boyfriend when he needs her the most.\" Sonic summed up. \"How do you think he is?\" He repeated. Apparently he was pretty upset with this whole situation aswell. \"I didn't mean to make it sound that way. I'm not leaving him.\" Rouge said to defend herself. \"That's not what Shadow thinks.\" He said. The female mobian stayed silent.\n\"You need to go upstairs and talk to him.\" Sonic suggested. Rouge wasn't so sure. Sonic sighed and rubbed the back of his neck. \"Listen, Shadow is in a painfull and difficult situation now. He needs all the support he can get and he will only get that from me, Tails, Cream, Vanilla and you. You need to go up there and talk to him.\" He said. Rouge, who was now finally convinced, nodded in agreement. \"You're right, i should.\" She said and made her way into the hallway and up the stairs.\nWhen she arrived, Rouge approached my room and softly knocked on the door. There was no answer. \"Shadow?\" She called and pressed her ear against the door to listen for any sort of movement or answer, but there was none. \"Shadow? Shadow, open this door!\" She demanded as she was starting to panic. She took hold of the doorknob, twisted it and practically ripped the door out of it's hinges. She quickly discovered her panic was all for nothing when she saw her friend slowly waking up from his slumber because of the loud noises she made.\n\"Rouge? What's wrong?\" I asked and sat up. I watched her with a tired look in my eyes. \"Oh.... You were sleeping.\" Rouge said and sighed in relief. \"I was?\" I muttered and scratched behind my ear. Rouge sat down on the edge of my bed and placed a hand on my leg to draw my attention. \"Listen, about what Knuckles said.\" She started. \"I know that it was hurtfull to hear, but you need to know that no matter what happens, even if you so happen to have more then one lover, i will not abandon you.\" She reassured me. I didn't know if what she said was true, but it did manage to appease me for a while. I didn't answer and Rouge took it as a good sign since i didn't say anything bad either. So she stood up from my bed and walked towards the door to leave.\n\"I'm not a whore.\" I muttered and looked down as i heard the door close. I laid down on my matrass and curled up. I sighed and tried to fall asleep again since i still felt pretty tired. But it somehow wasn't as easy as it was before. Maybe it was because i had been rudely awoken just a few minutes ago? That was my only explanation. I reopened my eyes and sat back up. There was no way i would be falling back asleep. \"Damnit.\" I sighed and swung my legs over the edge of my bed. Maybe there was something i could do to help me fall back asleep.\nMy eyes fell on the tv screen that had been standing here for atleast quite a few months before i had come to live here. In my two year stay i've never bothered to use it. The tv wasn't exactly an old model, but it wasn't the newest one either. Maybe now it could come in handy. I pushed myself up from the bed and walked over to the tv cabinet. I searched through the nearly empty drawers and found the remote. I went to my knees and plugged in th eplug of the tv and stood back up straight. I pushed the on-button on the tv and saw a red light appear on the bottom left. I pressed a number on the remote and sat back down as something slowly appeared on the screen.\nThe program that was one wasn't exactly an interesting one. So i just went ahead and changed the channel. Nothing interesting on that one either. I changed the channel again and kept changing it for quite a few times untill i stopped at one channel. It was called History channel and they were showing a program about supernatural beings. Or more specificly, they were talking about aliens. I didn't know why i stopped to watch this. Maybe it was because i was an alien half breed myself. Not that it would matter. They weren't exactly talking about Black Arms so it shouldn't be interesting to me. Although it could be that some aliens could be similar to eachother. Maybe they were talking about one that was similar to them? Or were they talking about one that was completely different? I don't know. What i did know is that i found that program strangely interesting.\nThe historians and cryptologists were talking about strange artifacts that might've been left behind by aliens. Oddly enough they were talking about piramids and other famous monuments that were hard to explain. Like stonehenge or the statues on Easter Island. Apparently it was that hard to believe that poeple back then could operate, what back then would be considerate, heavy machinery. But to be fair, poeple from way back would think the same if they knew that our planet breaking apart is like a normal monday to us.\nThey were talking on and on about the crop circles and strange rock formations that was found before talking about Area 51 and Roswell. Those two locations were known for alien encounters, but i sometimes wondered if they were true. I would be a hypocrite if i denied the existence of both aliens and encounters since i'm partially an alien myself.\nBy now i was lying on my bed on my side with my arm holding my head up and the remote in my other hand. Along the way i had somehow dressed out of my clothes so i was only wearing my boxers. My head kept falling forward when my plan to doze of was working. I was slowly losing my interest and focus on the program when i was close to falling asleep.\nI laid my head down on my pillow and closed my tired eyes as i gave up on fighting it. I was close to dozing off when my ears twitched upon hearing one of the historians talk about strange round artifacts a group of pre-teens found in an old abandoned barn they were playing in. They had taken it back to one of the kids' their parents and they handed it over to the police, who in turn gave them to the goverment to perform experiments on it to find out exactly what they were. I opened my eyes as i had decided to follow that small part before falling asleep. I sat up and leant back against the wall in an attempt to stay awake.\nI didn't know what they were talking about, but i was strangely attracted to those odd artifacts those kids found. I was about to shrugg it away when they told us what those artifacts might be. Alien eggs. I jumped in shock when i realised something. And there was only one way to find out if i was right or not. I jumped up from my bed and quickly dressed up again. I turned the tv off and walked out of my room. I walked down the stairs, but stopped halfway when i heard voices talking in the livingroom. They belonged to Knuckles and Rouge again. But this time Sonic was in on it to. I didn't hear anything of conversation because i didn't even care to pay attention to it. They were probably talking about my currect situation anyway.\nI jumped down the last steps of the stairs and walked out through the front door. The door to the livingroom opened and a pair of footsteps followed me. \"Shadow? Where are you going?\" A voice asked. I turned and saw that Sonic was the one talking to me. \"I need to make sure of something. I don't know if it will take long, but i'll be back as soon as i can.\" I said and walked into the direction of the hospital. \"make sure of something? Make sure of what?\" Sonic asked and followed me. \"Nothing of your concern! I just need to know something that is important to me.\" I explained. \"In this about your miscarriage?\" He asked and made me halt. \"It is, isn't it?\" He asked and i looked down. \"I just want to know what it is that i carried for only a month. Is that so wrong?\" I asked and turned to look up to him with my ears flattened against my skull. \"No of course not! I was just worried that you were going to do...well...\" Sonic said, but his voice trailed off. \"Do what? Something stupid?\" I asked him. He sighed. I guess he was thinking that.\nI turned back around and walked down the sidewalk again. A pair of footsteps joined mine as i walked. I turned my head to look at my side to see that Sonic was following me. \"What're you doing?\" I asked. \"i'm worried about you, so i figured that i should go along with you.\" He said and walked next to me. I didn't reply to him and just turned my head to look in front of me again. I didn't mind him joinging me so i kept quiet about it.\nWe soon arrived at the hospital and walked inside. \"Where do you think they put her?\" I asked. \"Her?\" Sonic asked in confusion. \"Well, yeah, babies always start out as girls before some become boys. So mine was deffinetly a girl.\" I glared at him as if he had done something wrong. \"Sorry.\" He apologized as he figured that i was a bit sensitive about the topic and that he had inadvertently insulted me. I looked in front of me again and searched for someone who could help me find what i seek.\nAfter two hours and a half had passed before the two of us sat down in the waiting room. My ears flattened and i sighed as i looked down. \"I'm sure that we'll find it.\" Sonic said as he tried to encourage me, but it wasn't really working. \"Sonic, we searched the whole hospital and there was no sign of her.\" I said. \"Maybe they've taken her somewhere.\" He suggested. I thought about it. It could be possible. Maybe they took her to a mortuary to do an autopsy or something. I gasped as i suddenly knew exactly where she had been taken. They had taken her to the G.U.N headquarters. I shot up from my chair and ran towards the front entrance of the hospital. \"Shadow? Shadow wait!\" Sonic yelled in surprise when he saw his rival run for it. He got up from his chair and jogged after me.\nOutside of the hospital i halted and looked both ways in the street to try and remember the way to the G.U.N headquarters. \"Good, you stopped. Where are you headed?\" Sonic asked when his jogging came to a stop next to me. \"To G.U.N! She must be there!\" I stated and ran into the direction of my job. Sonic had no problem keeping up and not because of how naturally fast he it. But because i could not run as fast as i usually could because of everything that my body has been forced through. I was still healing after all this time.\n\"How do you know that for sure?\" Sonic asked as he jogged next to me. \"I used to be a usefull experiment for them. Of course they will do something to her!\" I practically yelled to him. Sonic came to a stop in front of me and stopped me by placing his hands on my shoulders. \"Aren't you being a little paranoid? There's no way that they would do something that cruel.\" He tried to convince me, but i knew better. I was a practically born and raised in G.U.N. Nobody knew them better than i did and doing something so cruel to a stillborn wasn't so far fetched. I refused to answer him since i was in a hurry to get to the base. I pushed him away from me and continued on my way. \"Shadow.\" Sonic called for me and chased me again.\nWe quickly arrived and we made our way towards the commander's office. Few soldiers tried to stop us, but i just ignored them and walked right past them. Sonic tried to tell them that it was nothing, but it wasn't an easy task to do when he wanted to follow me and make sure that i wasn't doing anything stupid at the same time.\nI barged into the commander's office and banged my fists angrily on his desk. \"What the hell is wrong with you?!\" I yelled in anger. Sonic came walking into the room and closed the door behind him so we could have a bit of privacy. Not that privacy was an option if i kept yelling like that. The commander looked at me with a blank expression. He was speechless. He had not expected me to come barging into his office.\nFrom his expression i knew that he was confused about my sudden visit. I growled as his expression angered me even more. \"Don't play dumb with me!\" I yelled without giving him the time to even try to ask what was going on. \"Tell me what you've done to her!\" I demanded with a growl. \"Her?\" The commander muttered. He intertwined his hands on his desk and straightened himself. \"I see that you are here for your stillborn.\" He said. I don't know what, but something about the way he said 'stillborn' pissed me off.\nThe commander flinched when my eyes narrowed in a threatening way. Even he knew not to mess with me whenever i was pissed. So he knew that he should be carefull. He was treading dangerous grounds after all. \"Shadow, maybe you should-\" Sonic tried to tell me to calm down, but someone decided to interupt him. \"come with me.\" A feminine voice said as if continuing the hero's sentence. I looked over my shoulder and towards the door frame. The other two who were present in the room looked in the same direction aswell. Doctor Carthoff was standing in the doorway. She wore her usual serious expression, but something was off about it. \"Carthoff.\" I said upon acknowledging the human doctor. She gestured towards the hallway. Knowing that i could trust her, i followed her gesture and walked after her when she walked down the hallway.\nWe passed many corridors, stairs, elevators, rooms and entered the underground part of this base. I felt uncomfortable as the elevator got lower and nearer to the very last level. I knew this part of the base like the back of my hand, for i had lived in it for more than fifty years. The elevator doors opened to reveal a darkly lit hallway. Carthoff walked out into the hallway and the movement censors made the lights light up her path even brighter than it did just a second before. I swiftly followed her.\nAs we walked on, i looked around as if this was the first time i had been in here. Carthoff didn't notice the fact that i was getting more uncomfortable by the second and just kept walking. We passed several laboratories and containment chambers that could be holding an experiment like me. Although it was tempting, i didn't want to find out. Despites what had happened to me these past two months, i still had a pretty good life compared to what i had grown up in. Finding out if there were other experiments would result in a one-way ticket back here. And this time it could be for the rest of my life. Which could be pretty long considering the fact that i was build to last long.\nThe silence and the lack of scientists around here indicated that it was past working hours. The scientists all had finished their shifts and gone home to their families. Forgetting all the poor souls that were trapped inside of here.\n\"Shadow!\" Doctor Carthoff called for me when she arrived at the door at the end of the last hallway and noticed that i had stayed behind lost in thoughts. I snapped out of my spaced out trance and ran over to her. Carthoff typed the password into the number pad and a door opened. She walked on and i followed.\n\"What is this?\" I asked. I had never been in this hallway before. Was it new? \"It's a new wing that has been added to the underground. There was a need for more laboratories. It was build when you were asleep in that cryogenetic capsule.\" Carthoff explains. \"I see.\" I simply answered as i looked around.\nWe walked through this new wing untill we stopped at one of the many metal doors. She typed in another number password and opened the door. I tried to look past her as it opened, but the room was to dark to see in. We walked inside and the light turned on.\nMy eyes widened. This place was like any other laboratory. Chemicals, counters, a metal table, everything you could find in a lab was here. What made my eyes go wide, was what laid on the examination table that stood in the middle of the room. A white cloth was spread out on top of it. But there was a lump in it, indicating that there was something underneath. The bloodspots on the cloth confirming that fact.\nI froze in place as i realised what it was. I stood there and stared at it. Carthoff approached it and stood next to the table. She turned to face me. She was waiting for me to do something or atleast say something. My wide eyes moved from the lump, to her and back to the lump. I felt anxiety making it's way into my heart. I had come all this way, caused such a choas in both this base and the hospital, just to see what was lying in front of me. But i suddenly lost the courage to walk up to the table and see it.\n\"Shadow?\" Carthoff asked when i didn't move or say anything for a long time. I gazed up to her. \"I had been hoping to get you here. You need to see this.\" She said. My body, as if having a mind of it's own, moved towards the examination table. My hand rose up and took hold of the cloth and hovered in place. \"Do you want me to do it?\" Carthoff asked with a concerned expression. She understood how hard this was. What i was about to find could've been my child after all.\nMy eyes squeezed shut as i lifted the cloth. I was to scared to open my eyes. I feared what i was about to find lying in front of me. But i knew that i had to face it sooner or later. I took a deep breath and opened my eyes.\n\"What is this?\" I asked softly. What laid in front of me was not an undeveloped child. It didn't even resemble one. That baffled me. If those bloodtest results had told them that i had been pregnant, than what did i carry inside of me for a whole month? \"What is this?\" I asked and looked up to the female doctor. \"I had hoped that you could tell me.\" Carthoff answered. I looked back at what laid before me. It was a bloody lump. I couldn't tell what this was. It wasn't a baby, that was for sure, so what was it? And why did it cause a sudden explosion of feminine hormones in my DNA?\nA wave of relief washed over me when i realised something. I had not miscarried. I smiled and almost laughed out loud out of happiness. Carthoff was puzzled by my behaviour. I decided to answer to her confusion. \"I haven't lost my child.\" I smiled brightly. I didn't smile alot, but right now i couldn't help it. I felt so happy and reliefed. I turned and almost skipped out of the room. Carthoff watched me go. Her expression a mix of confusion, worry and speechless. She was worried that i didn't understand the gravity of this situation. But how could i? I was just so happy that i hadn't miscarried. That was the only fact i cared about.\nI walked into the hallway and towards the elevator that we had come from. \"You coming?\" I yelled over to the human doctor. It took her a while, but she finally did come back to the elevator. I pressed the button to get to the ground level and waited for us to arrive. It was quiet during the ride. I wasn't so bothered by it, but my companion was. She needed to say something, but couldn't form the words.\n\"Shadow?\" Carthoff called for me after a while. I looked at her to show her that i was listening. \"Shadow.... You do know what this means, right?\" She asked carefully. She didn't really know what to tell me as she was a bit confused by this whole situation. \"What do you mean?\" I asked. I didn't see any reason to be worried or shocked. So i didn't understand why she was. Maybe it was just natural for doctors to get worried so easily. \"You're shrugging this whole thing off as if nothing happened.\" She said. \"That's because i just find out that i wasn't pregnant at all. Wouldn't you do the same?\" I asked and cut her off without meaning to. \"You're missing the point here.\" Carthoff said with a more confronting tone. I stayed silent and waited for her to continue as she was going to get to the point of what she was trying to say to me. \"What i am trying to say is that you seem to ignore the fact that something serious might be going on. There must be a reason why that was in you.\" Carthoff explained.\n\"You mean that.... I could be gravely ill?\" I asked. At the same time the elevator arrived at the ground level and the two doors opening. Carthoff slowly nodded. I looked down. This time i was the one who was speechless.\n\"Shadow?\" I heard a voice say. I looked up into the hallway and saw Sonic standing there. He had been waiting for us to return. \"Was it that bad?\" Sonic asked. \"No... I, huh, didn't miscarry.\" I answered and exited the elevator. Carthoff did the same. \"That's a good thing isn't it?\" Sonic asked. I shrugged as an answer. \"I'm going home.\" I said and walked towards the entrance. \"It's time that i'll head home aswell. My shift ended quite a while ago.\" Carthoff said and followed me.\nSonic didn't follow me back. He stayed put near the elevator. He glanced at it and made sure that nobody was around before stepping inside and going to the lowest level. He wanted to know exactly what had left me so confused and speechless. He arrived at the lowest level in no time and walked out into the darkened hallway. The lights turned on their own again as he passed the censor. He continued to walk down the hallway. He was close, he could feel it.\nSonic turned a corner and kept walking untill he, after a while of figuring out the passwords, finally enters the laboratory that I and Doctor Carthoff had been in before. His eyes widened slightly as he immediatly noticed the lump that had been covered with the white cloth once more. He approached it and reached for it. He wanted to pull the cloth off of the examination table and see what it was, but he didn't get that far.\n\"Sonic? What are you doing in here?\" A man's voice said. Sonic turned to look at the door and saw that the commander standing there. \"Nothing.\" He answered. The commander sighed. \"I know that everything that has been happening with Shadow is worrying you, but that does not mean you can sneak around in this base. Especially in this part of the facility.\" The human male said with dismay. He was sincerely displeased by how Sonic had sneaked into this part of the base and was nosing around in places where he wasn't supposed to be.\n\"get out of here.\" The commander demanded when Sonic didn't answer. Sonic, knowing that there was nothing he could do here anymore, walked past the commander and towards the elevator. He knew that this wouldn't be the last he would see of this underground base. Shadow's POV

I yawned tiredly as i listened to the commander going on and on about the failed mission me and my team mates had just returned from. He lectured us about how we handled it wrong, how it should've gone, etc. He told us what our exact moves should've been, but we were hardly listening. The past three weeks we had constant missions. If we had just completed one, we had another one waiting for us at the base. It was like this for the past three weeks and it had exhausted us. Our last few missions had failed. The commander was already tired of us messing up and gave us lecture after lecture, but we weren't listening. We were half asleep. All we heard was gibberish being spewed.
My eyes were falling closed and my head fell forward and shot back upward as i tried my best to stay awake. Rouge was already far away in dreamland. I wanted nothing more than to follow her, but i knew that someone had to wake her up so we could go home and get some rest after he was done.
The commander sighed and looked at us when he finally stopped rambling. He watched as Rouge slept and i was slowly losing conciousness. I muttered something as i gave up on fighting the exhaustion and slowly dozed of. The commander cleared his throat rather loudly and i jumped awake at the sound. Rouge slowly woke up when the sound reached her sensitive ears. "What happened?" She asked me and looked around disorientated. "hmm?" I hummed in confusion as i had a hard time giving a meaning to her question and figuring out exactly what she had asked me.
"Agent Rouge? Agent Shadow?" The commander called for us to take hold of our attention. We straightened in our seat and faced him. "I can see that you two are quite exhausted." He said. "I have to admit that i am giving the two of you much more than you can handle. So i will give you two weeks off." He said. "Really?" Rouge asked. The commander sighed and nodded. He was obviously not liking this. "You're dismissed." The commander said and left the room.
"Finally!" Rouge said and stretched her tired muscles. "I thought he was never going to shut up." I said and stood up before stretching my own muscles. "Neither did i." She said and stood up aswell. "Come on, let's go home." I said and walked towards the door. I took hold of the door knob and twisted it, but i loosened my hold on the knob as i gasped and placed a hand on my lower stomache when i felt an intense sting. "What's wrong?" Rouge asked in concern. The sting slowly faded and i looked at her. "It's nothing. I'm sure that i got up to fast or something." I said and turned the knob and left the room. Rouge followed me closely behind.
The walk home was long, but we finally came back home. Rouge used her key to open the door and let us in. After she got inside she locked the door again and continued to walk up the stairs to her bedroom to change into more comfortable clothing while i made my way to the kitchen to quickly quench my thirst before going to sleep. I placed the glass in the sink and quickly made my way into the hallway. I hung my trenchcoat up on the coat hanger and ran up the stairs.
I walked into the bedroom. "Goodnight, Rouge!" I yelled at her to make sure that she had heard me. When i heard my call returned is when i closed my door and dressed out of my clothing untill i only wore my boxers. I placed them on my desk chair and planned on washing them tomorrow. I dropped down flat on my stomache on my bed and snuggled my muzzle into the pillow. A content sigh left my lungs as my eyes closed. I sat up and took my blanket and covered my body with it. I laid down and curled up as i snuggled underneath it. I had a slight headache as i was so tired. I shut my eyelids again and slowly dozed off.
The next morning i woke up from my slumber slowly. I uncurled and laid on my back as i allowed myself the time i needed to wake up. My eyes opened and i looked up to the ceilling. I stretched my arms, back and legs before relaxing myself and sitting up in my bed. I yawned and looked around in my room. I threw my legs off of the side and pushed myself up, but i dropped back down with a gasp as i felt a sting in my lower stomache. "What the....." I muttered and placed a hand on the spot.
"That was weird." I muttered when i felt the sting slowly fade. It took me by surprise, but i quickly made myself forget about it as i decided that it was nothing to be worried about. I pushed myself up again and approached my closet. I opened the closet doors and searched for some clothes to wear. The door closed again and i made my way into the bathroom. I took a quick warm shower, brushed my teeth and dressed myself up after drying my fur and quills.
I made my way down the stairs and into the kitchen. I noticed that Rouge, like usual, wasn't up yet. I decided to set up the table before getting myself a hot cup of coffee. Not alot of time had passed before i was sitting on the couch and enjoying my first cup of coffee this morning. I turned the tv on and watched the news as i waited for Rouge to wake up and come down from her room. I winced when i felt a sting for the fourth time that morning. What was up with those? Why was i feeling stinging pain in my lower belly? Was i getting sick? Did i hurt myself during yesterday's mission?
"Is something the matter?" Rouge asked as she came down the stairs to find me almost bent over in pain. "No, it's nothing." I denied, but i failed to convince her when my face was contorted in pain. Rouge's eyes narrowed in concern and she quickly sat down on the couch next to me and rested a hand on my shoulder and the other on my hand that was resting on my stomache. "Shadow, if it hurts this much, than you need to see a doctor." She said as she heard my wince. "No, i'm fine. I probably just strained myself." I reasoned. She didn't want to listen, but she knew that arguing with me about this was pointless. She sighed. "Shadow, atleast promise me that if they don't go away, you'll see the help of a doctor?" She asked. "I promise." I said. She smiled as she knew that i never backed down from my promises.
"Come on, let's eat some breakfast." Rouge said smilling comforting and stood up. "I'll pass this time." I said and put the cup down on the coffee table. "I kind of lost my appetite." I said and kept my hand on my belly despites the pain being gone for now. "I see.... Well, if you get hungry, just tell me and i'll fix you something to eat." My friend said with sympathy. "Thanks, but you don't have to." I replied. "Oh don't worry about it, honey, i would love to do it." She said. Her concern for my well being making her ready to give me some sort of special treatement. "i'll be fine don't worry." I tried to reassure her. "Just tell me when you feel it again." She said and got up from the couch. The bat walked into the kitchen and and prepared her breakfast.
About a week passed by. I was walking past the various shelves in a supermarket as it was about time that either me or Rouge went grocery shopping. Rouge had gone over to her boyfriend, Knuckles, so it was up to me to get some food in our house. I read the little shopping list for the so maniest time today. "Milk." I muttered to myself and searched for the milk products.
I held onto one of the shelves as i felt another strong sting in my lower belly. This one being exceptionally painfull. "Are you okay, shadow?" A familiar voice asked. I looked over my shoulder and saw Sonic standing not to far away from me. He watched me in concern as he rarely saw me doubled over in pain. I nodded and grimaced. "Do you want me to take you to a doctor?" He asked. "No! What is it with you guys trying to send me to a doctor?" I asked and straightened myself. "It looked like it hurt." Sonic reasoned. "I don't need a doctor. I'll be just fine, faker." I said and walked into the direction of the milk shelves. Sonic's ears lowered a little in concern as he watched me walk off towards the final item on my list.
After the last item was added to my bag, i went to the cash register and took my wallet to pay for the groceries. "That's a coincidence! Nice to see you here to." A voice said behind me. I turned around to see the cobalt hero i met only a few minutes ago standing behind me. "Sonic..... What're you doing here?" I asked. "I'm here to pay for my groceries." He answered. 'I guess that was a stupid question.' I told myself mentally. "That's quite alot you've got there, Shadz." Sonic said as he had a lack of topics to talk about. "Yeah, it is quite alot for two poeple. It's gone surprisingly quick to." I answered and looked at all the items i needed. Sonic chuckled upon my statement.
"That is quite surprising." Sonic said. "Especially when you consider the fact that neither of us actually eat as much as it seems." I added and heard another soft chuckle. I turned away from the mobian hero and to the cashier. I asked for the price and paid for it. "See ya!" Sonic yelled after me when i walked to the exit and left the store.
Upon returning home i discovered that Rouge had already returned from her seemingly short visit at Knuckles' place. "Back home already? How did it go?" She asked and looked up from her position on the couch. "Just fine." I answered and made my way into the kitchen to put all the groceries away. "Had any more pains in your belly?" She asked as she followed me into the kitchen. "A few." I answered as i refilled the cabinets. Rouge sat down on a chair and stayed silent. As if she waited for something.
"Why do you ask?" I finally asked. It was obvious that she had been waiting for me to ask that question. Why else would she wait for me to finish in silence. "Sonic send me a text message after you left the store. He's concerned and he told me to keep a close eyes on you." Rouge answered. Sonic was concerned? For me? That's a first.
"You never told me that you still have cramps." She said a bit in disbelieve. I had promised to go to a doctor when i was still hurting after a week, after all. "They aren't that bad and-" I started, but my sentence was cut of the middle. "Not that bad? Sonic said you were practically doubling over in pain." She stated. I could understand her concern, but there was honestly nothing wrong with me. "It's just a strain from the missions." I reasoned, but it didn't seem to convince her. "if it was a strain from work than it should've been gone by now." She said. "Atleast go to a doctor just for the sake of knowing that you're okay." Rouge asked with a slight glint of worry in her eyes.
I sighed and leant against the kitchen counter. "Fine." I said. "Thank you." Rouge said as her heart was filled with relief when i told her that i would go and visit a doctor. "i'll finish up here. You go and get an appointment with a doctor." Rouge said and pushed me out of the kitchen. "I will! Don't be so pushy!" I stated and approached the phone on the dresser. I heard rummaging in the kitchen and sighed again. I lifted the phone up from it's holder and dailed the number of our doctor. We knew our doctor pretty well. The work we did wasn't exactly the safest one around. We often came home with bruises, broken bones, burns, you name it, we had it at one point in our career. We often visited her because of it. It was rare that we came home without injuries.
The phone rang and i waited for someone to answer. It rang three times before an angelic voice answered. "Hello, this is the Westopolis Clinic, how may i help you?" The female assistent of the building asked. "Hello, this is Shadow Robotnik." As soon as i finished that sentence i could hear her almost dropping the phone in shock. She was making quite a fuss towards her co-workers. I knew that poeple didn't like me, but she didn't need to throw a tantrum over it.
It took her exactly seven minutes before she calmed down. "Hello?" She said as she wasn't sure if i was still on the other side of the phone. "Yeah, i'm still here." I said with a sigh. Rouge, who had finished up in the kitchen, stood next to me. Her hands rested on my shoulders and her ear was close to the phone so she could hear everything. She found the whole conversation amusing. "H-How may i help you?" The assistance stuttered. "I would like to make an appointment with doctor Carthoff." I said and pressed my hand against my forehead. "Uhm.... Right.... T-There's an opening in his schedule at 17:30." She said.
I turned to look at Rouge to see if she agreed with the time of the appointment. She nodded in agreement to let me know that it was possible to go. "Yeah, that's fine." I finally replied. "Yeah. See you later." I said before hanging up and placing the phone back on it's holder. "There. Appointment made. Are you happy?" I asked the white bat standing next to me. She smiled and nodded before walking towards the couch. She sat down and picked her book back up.
The hours passed by quickly and before i knew it, it was five in the afternoone. Time to go to the doctor. I pulled my trenchcoat on and turned to the front door. "Are you leaving?" Rouge asked. "I need to meet with the doctor in half an hour. I don't want to be late." I said. Rouge raised an eyebrow at my statement. Half an hour was stoll quite some time. Thinking that i wouldn't be on time was indeed a bit far fetched. "I need to go. I don't wanna hurry. I'll be back later." I said and opened the fornt door. "Fine, i'll see you later." Rouge said before closing the front door behind me.
I walked down the sidewalk towards my destination. I liked taking walks so naturally i took my time getting to the Clinic. It was only a ten minute walk from my home to the doctor's office. I had more than enough time to get there. But even though i took my time with the walk, i still arrived pretty early. I had to be here at 17:30, but i arrived here at 17:12. I walked into the waiting room and saw quite alot of poeple sitting in the room. They looked at me in surprise as they had not expected me to come walking into the room. I ignored the stares and sat down on one of the few empty chairs and waited for my turn to come.
45 minutes, about 27 minutes after my appointment with doctor Carthoff, passed by before it was finally my turn. The doctor, a human woman with brown hair and brown eyes, opened the door and called my name. I stood up from my seat and followed her to her office.
"Shadow, it's been a while since i've last seen you." Dr. Carthoff said as she sat down on her desk chair. I hung my trenchcoat over a chair and sat down opposite to her. "What's the matter." She asked. "I've been having pains in my lower stomache area. I thought that it was a strain from the non-stop missions, but almost a week as passed by and Rouge is starting to think that it's something else." I explained. "I see." The doctor mumbled. "Why don't you get up and lie down on the examination table." She said. I stood up from my chair and walked over to the examination table. I laid down on top of it and waited for the human doctor to come.
"Now, let's find out what's bothering you. Can you lift your shirt for me?" The doctor asked. I did as she asked and lifted my shirt up. I watched her as she felt around on my belly to locate exactly where it hurt. I winced when she pressed on my lower stomach. She pulled her hands back and crossed her arms in front of her chest as she thought. "Hmm." She hummed. "Are you sure those are stomache cramps?" She asked. "Yeah, what else could it be?" I asked.
The doctor thought again. What made her act this way? It was probably just a strain or the flu or something. Nothing serious. "Do you have Diarrhea?" She asked. "Thankfully not." I said with one of my ears twitching. "What do you think it is?" I asked. I was getting a bit nervous since she took so long to answer.
"You can take your seat again." Doctor Carthoff said. I pulled my shirt back down and hopped off of the examination table. I walked back towards the desk and sat down on the chair. "The doctor sat back down on her desk chair aswell. "Can you finally tell me what's wrong?" I asked. "I think that your intestinal flora is a upset. I suggest that you eat light meals and come back in three weeks." The doctor advised. "I will." I said and paid her for her medical expertise. I told her goodbye and left for home.
The days went by slowly. My stomache aches didn't go away, but they didn't get any worse either. Rouge had tried to make me go to a doctor again after another week had passed. She was practically forcing me when they were still plaguing me after another week had passed by. But it wasn't untill a month in total had passed before the stomache aches became less frequent. I was reliefed beyond believe when i woke up in the morning and had a day with significantly less cramps than usual.
I thought that this whole ordeal was finally coming to an end. Unforunatly, i had to return to the doctor again, like i said i would three weeks ago. And she wasn't so certain that this was over. Especially with my cramps taking so long to go away. "How're you feeling today?" Doctor Carthoff asked. "A bit better. The stings are going away." I answered and crossed my leg over the other. "That's good to hear. Do you mind to lie down on the examination table?" The doctor asked. I got up from the chair and laid down on the table once more. I lifted my shirt up and waited for the doctor to come. She came quickly and repeated the actions she did three weeks ago.
Her eyes narrowed and her brows furrowed as her hands settled on my lower belly and she felt that this particular place was a bit hard. "And you're saying that the cramps are fading?" She asked. "Yeah. Why? Is it something serious?" I asked and lifted my head up from the hard surface and looked at my belly.
Doctor Carthoff walked away from the examination table and towards her cabinets. She searched around untill she took a box our of it and placed it on the counter. She opened it and pulled out an empty syringe. I pulled my shirt down and sat back up. "give me your arm." She said as she approached me. I showed my arm and the doctor wrapped an elastic around my arm. With cotton she swiped my inner elbow with disinfectant and searched for a vein through my fur."Why are you taking blood?" I questioned her secrecy. She didn't answer. My ears bent backwards as i did not like this at all.
Doctor Carthoff found a vein and punctured it with the needle. I almost yelped. She pulled at the other end of the syringe and took a small amount of blood from my arms before pulling the syringe back out and pressing a small piece of cotton against the small puncture wound. I took over from her and pressed the cotton against my inner elbow. She put the blood away to send it away and let it get tested.
"Is something the matter?" I asked when she approached me again. "We will find out when the blood test results get back." Doctor Carthoff said and tidied up the examination table. "Will it take long for the results to come?" I asked as i got off of the table. "That depends." She answered. "Depends on what?" I asked and stood in front of her desk. "Depends weither the lab is busy or not. If they aren't to busy than we'll have the results in a week." She said. "And if they are busy?" I asked. "That depends on how busy they are. We've had blood results come in three months after they were taken." The doctor said. "That long?" I muttered. "Yes, it's annoying, i know, but there is nothing i can do about it." The doctor said and sat down on her desk chair.
Carthoff was writing something down on a prescription paper and gave it to me. I took it and read it. "Another week off? But i've been staying home on yours and Rouge's demand and my weeks off ended two weeks ago! I need to get back to work!" I said a bit in disbelieve. What should've been two weeks away from work, had become a whole month away from work. The commander didn't like it and neither did i. But Rouge and her several calls to the doctor had made sure i had stayed home all this time. I didn't like staying home because there was little i could do. So staying away from work for another week was not something i looked forward to.
"I know that you're tired of staying home, but i strongly advise that you do. If the test results aren't here by the end of the week then i will allow you to go back to work." Carthoff said and placed her elbows on her desk. Her fingers intertwining as she looked up to me. "Fine." I muttered much to my dismay and pulled my trenchcoat on. "I'll see you soon." Carthoff said after i had paid her and shook my hand. "Bye." I simply said and left the Clinic.
"Another week at home? The house will never be as clean as it will be by the end of this week." Rouge said and giggled softly as she apparently found her own joke funny. "I can't believe it either. The commander is going to be pissed by the time i do get to go back to work." I sighed and looked up to her from my position at the kitchen table. "I'm sure that he'll understand. There must be a reason why she keeps you home for so long." Rouge said and leant against the table. "If there really is a reason than i hope Carthoff will tell me what it is soon. Cause i don't see any reason why i need to stay home when i'm perfectly fine." I stated, but Rouge didn't seem convinced.
"Perfectly fine? Tell that to your past self who keeps complaining about cramps and stomache aches." Rouge said unimpressed and took her eyes away from the prescription and looked at me from the corners of her eyes. "I didn't complain that much. And certainly not as much as Knuckles can." I muttered and sipped from my glass of water. "Of course you didn't." Rouge teased with a smile tugging on her lips. "You better warn the commander later today." She said. "I can't wait till i do." I sighed and she laughed softly.
The commander had a temper to say the least. He was easily angered and the fact that one of his best agents hadn't shown up for a whole month and didn't plan on doing so for another week wasn't really helping either. It wouldn't surprise me if he blew up as soon he heard my voice on the other end of the phone. I did not look forward to calling him and hearing him yell in my ears untill i was certain that i was deaf. "You should call him." Rouge repeated and left the kitchen.
"I guess i should." I muttered to myself and got up from my chair. I emptied my glass and put it in the sink before making my way into the livingroom. I walked towards the dresser with Rouge's eyes glued on my back as she watched me from her position on the couch and picked up the phone. I dailed the number of the G.U.N headquarters and waited for someone to pick up. "Hello? Who is this?" An assistent on the other side of the phone line asked a bit rude. "It's Shadow." I answered. The voice sighed in annoyence. "Shadow, you know that the commander hates it when you call from a public phone line." The agitated assistent said. "I'm calling from Rouge's phone. So this isn't exactly a public line." I answered. My answer seemed to agitate him even further.
"Why are you calling?" The voice asked. He obviously didn't want to talk to me for a very long and therefore wanted to end our conversation quickly. "I'm calling to report to the commander that i need to stay home for another week." I said and heard the assistent let out another sigh. "The commander will not like this." He muttered before rudely hanging up on the phone. "Bye.... I guess." I muttered and placed the phone back in it's original place on the holder.
"How did it go?" Rouge asked as soon as the phone was back in place. "It went pretty well. One of his assistents answered instead of the commander himself. I'm glad to know that i won't be the one being yelled at." I said while facing her. "Aren't you lucky." Rouge said and returned her attention to her book. I approached her and dropped down on the couch next to her. "I guess." I said and reeled my head back against the couch. I lifted my head up a bit as i read the cover of Rouge's book. "You've got to be kidding me. Fifty Shades of Grey?" I asked as i read the title of the famous book. "Well, you know how many women like this book and i wanted to give it a try." She explained. "I see..... Well, how is it?" I asked. "It's actually not that bad." She said returned back to her book.
A few moments of silence passed. Rouge placed her bookmark on the page she was last at and closed her book. She placed the book on her lap. Her eyes moved and settled on me. I was leaning back agains the couch. I was a bit tired, so i closed my eyes to rest them for a few moments. "Tired already?" Rouge asked. "A bit." I muttered. "It's only in the afternoone. You're tired alot lately, aren't you?" She asked. I opened my eyes and looked up to the ceilling as i thought. "I guess that i am more tired than usual lately." I muttered more to myself than to her. "It's probably because of the lack of excercise." I reasoned and closed my eyes again. "If you're tired than you should go ahead and go to bed." Rouge suggested.
I thought about her proposition. Maybe taking a small nap wasn't such a bad idea. "Maybe that's for the best." I answered with a yawn. "I'll be back later." I said while getting up from the couch. "Sleep tight, hun." Rouge replied. I walked into the hallway and up the stairs and quickly arrived into my bedroom. I sat down on the edge of my bed and kicked my shoes off before lying down. I turned to lay on my side and closed my eye lids. It didn't take long  before i fell asleep.
When i had awoken, i almost immediatly realised that i had slept the whole day and night away. I didn't know that i was this tired yesterday. I sat up and gazed at the clock. It was five in the morning. Even though it was still early in the morning, i knew that i had to get up. I had slept more than i usually did, so getting up this early didn't sound like such a bad idea.
With a yawn i sat up on the edge of my bed. I rubbed in my eyes to get rid of the slightly blury vision. My ears twitched and listened for any sounds coming from within the house. It was completely silent. Rouge must still be asleep. I pushed myself up and searched for clean clothes to wear since i was still wearing the ones from the day before. I walked into the bathroom and placed them on the dresser next to the sink and undressed. I left them on the floor to clean them up later on and stepped inside the shower. I pulled the shower curtain behind me and turned the knob of the shower head. I sighed in content when the water hit my fur on my back. My body relaxed under the warmth of the water. I quickly rinsed my fur and cleaned every nook and cranny in my body before turning the water off. I stepped out of the shower, dried my fur and dressed up in the fresh clothing articles that i had brought along.
After tidyingup the bathroom, i hung the towels and old clothes over my arm and walked out of the room. I walked down the stairs and into the laundry room. I stuffed them into the washer, chose the right program and turned the machine on. I walked out of the laundry room and into the kitchen. I made myself a cup of coffee before sitting down on the couch. I turned the tv on and decided to wait till Rouge woke up.
Hours passed by. It was eight in the morning when Rouge finally decided to come down. "Good morning." I greeted. "Morning to you to." She returned and walked into the kitchen. I almost grinned as her bad mood reminded me that she was not at all a morning person. I heard rummaging in the kitchen as she made herself a coffee aswell. I heard her curse as she burned herself on the coffee pot and chuckled. "Need help?" I called out to her. She refused and cursed again.
After a while Rouge came walking back into the livingroom with a cup of coffee in her hands. "Took you long enough." I teased as she sat down next to me. "Shut it." Rouge snapped back and sipped from her hot coffee. She winced and cursed again when she burned her lip and tongue. I smiled as my small tease had gotten the desired reaction.
"Had a nice nap?" Rouge asked and looked at me. Her mood had changed for the better after a few sips of her cup of coffee when it had cooled down a little. "Yeah, i had slept the whole day and night away. I had no idea that i was that tired." I answered. "Maybe it's because you've been sick for these past weeks." She said. "That makes sense." I replied and stretched my arms and back as i felt a bit stiff. As i did stretch my shirt was pulled up revealing my belly and lower back.
"Are you putting on weight?" Rouge suddenly asked in surprise. "What?" I asked in confusion and looked at her as i dropped my arms to my side. "You're putting on weight." She said. I just looked at her in confusion. Rouge pulled me up with my arm and dragged me out into the hallway. We walked up the stairs to the upper floor. She pushed me into her bedroom and in front of her tall mirror. "I don't see any diffirences." I said as i watched my reflection in the mirror. "Pull your shirt up." She ordered. I did as she told and looked at my belly in the mirror. I still didn't see any diffirences untill the bat took my arm again and pushed me to make me stand side ways in front of the mirror.
"What the...." I muttered as i saw a small, barely noticable, bump on my belly. Was i really putting on weight? But that was impossible. I was designed to burn calories ridiculously fast! I could eat as much as i want and my weight would always be the same. It was a real pain in the ass. Because if i didn't eat so much or if i didn't eat anything at all, my body would burn the calories i already had. Meaning that i would get on the skinny side pretty quick. That was one of the many flaws that Gerald had overlooked when creating me. But never had i gained weight before. So where did the bump come from?
A week passed by. The doctor had not called back for the results of the blood test and so i was finally allowed to go back to work. "Are you sure you want to do this? I think that it's better to wait at home for the doctor's results." Rouge said as we entered through the front entrance of the G.U.N headquarters. She knew of my inability of gaining weight and that almost unnoticable bump on my belly worried her. "Rouge, the results can take up to three months before they're here. I've already been at home for a month, i can't stay at home for three more. I'll lose my job." I told her, but she didn't seem to take my excuse. "So what? You're smart, you can easily find another job!" She countered me with her argument, but it would not work.
We made our way into the briefing room and found the commander there waiting for us. "Agent Shadow, nice for you to show up for once." He grumbled and didn't bother to greet us or even look at us. He wasn't exactly in a good mood. We took our seat on one of the many chairs in the briefing room and waited for our assignment. The commander stood up from his seat, folded his hand behind his back and looked at us.
"You're new assignment is an ordinary one. We're suspecting that Dr. Eggman is planning a new attack on Westopolis. You're mission is to infiltrate his base and find out what he's up to." The commander ordered. "Sounds easy enough." I muttered. "The two of you will leave this instance. Dismissed." He said and left the room. "brief." I heard Rouge mutter to herself before getting up from her chair. I did the same and followed her out of the room.
"Do you know where Eggman's new base is?" I wondered as we left the base again. "believe it or not, but he's been in the same base he was last in." Rouge answered. "He is? Guess he's tired of moving time and time again." I muttered to no one in particular. "I guess that's where we'll head next." I said before igniting my hovershoes and skating over to our next destination. Rouge used her black wings to lift her off the ground and fly over to the base.
It didn't take us long to arrive at Eggman's base. It was in a forested area near the foot of a mountain. Just like all his other bases it stood out in it's enviremont and was therefore pretty easy to find. It was even easier to infiltrate and Eggman's robots weren't exactly hard to beat either. This mission was going to fly by. The base was a big dome shaped building with a bow shaped front entrance. A ventilation shaft protruded from the top. That was our way in.
"Rouge?" I called for her. "I'm on it." Rouge said and took my hands when i reached upwards to her. Rouge brought both of us above the Egg-dome and dropped me when i curled into a ball and spindashed through the metal frame that covered the opening of the ventilation shaft. I coughed from all the dust that had gathered here over the months. I crouched down to my knees and crawled through the shaft. A set of footsteps was heard as Rouge landed on the spot i had previously been crouching and followed me.
We crawled through the several ventilation shafts untill i stopped at one of the many frames we had come across. "What is it? Are we there?" Rouge asked and tried to look over my houlder. I used my claws to loosen the screws and pulled the frame up from the opening and moved it away. I peeked out of the shaft and looked around. Eggman wasn't here. "We're here." I answered and jumped down. I hit the metal floor and looked around. "It's safe." I said and Rouge jumped out aswell. She made her way over to the computer and immediatly tried to hack into it. I stood guard by the door and listened for anyone approaching. "Almost..." Rouge muttered as she tried all she could to hack into Robotnik's computer system.
"Aha! There we go!" Rouge exclaimed as she finally got through the security system. "G.U.N was right! Eggman really is planning something." She said and typed something on the keyboard. "Downloading all files now." She said. My ear twitched as i heard something in the hallway. I pressed my ear against the door and heard footsteps approaching. "He's coming!" I stated and turned to her. "I'm almost done." She said and i listened again. The footsteps were close now. "Rouge, he's coming!" I yelled.
"I'm done!" Rouge stated and pulled the disk out at the same time that the door opened to reveal the rotund scientist himself. "Shadow? Rouge?" Dr. Eggman said in confusion. I took Rouge's wrist, pushed Eggman out of the way and bolted out the door. I ran as fast as i could towards the front entrance. Heavy footsteps and rattling of machinery was heard behind us. "He called for help!" Rouge said and looked behind her as she used her wings to follow me at this speed. I ran towards the door in front of us, but a robot broke through it. I gasped in surprise and made a right turn. I followed the hallway and arrived into the hangar. "There!" Rouge yelled and pointed towards the entrance of the Egg-dome. I ran for the exit, but a robot cut me off. "Damn." I muttered and stopped. "Now give me that disk and neither of you will get hurt." Eggman said as he had us cornered.
Rouge flew up and screw kicked a robot against it's head, making it stumble backwards. Chaos energy gathered in the palm of my hand. I yelled "Chaos Spear" and threw it at the nearest robot. The robot exploded on impact as the attack was much more powerfull than usual. "What the." I said in surprise and looked at my hands. "How did you do that?" Rouge asked in surprise. "I....I don't know." I said and faced her. Another explosion was heard and we turned to look in that direction.
The smoke slowly vanished to reveal the epitome of speed and heroism disguised in blue fur and quills. "Sonic?" I muttered and turned his attention to me. "Rouge? Shadow? You guys are here to?" Sonic asked as he was quite surprised to find the two of us here. "That doesn matter! We'll explain later." I said and threw another Chaos Spear at a robot. Sonic's eyes widened a little as he also noticed the sudden change in my Chaos energy. He looked at Rouge, but she just shrugged before kicking another robot. Sonic turned his attention to one of the remaining robots and spindashed right through it's chest.
We panted when the robots were down and out. "Smooth sailing from here!" Sonic said and ran towards the exit since he assumed that we had already gotten what we all came for. Both me and Rouge followed him out. Eggman smirked as he still had one more trick up his sleeve.
"Watch out!" Sonic yelled and ducked to the floor right as a fist came flying towards us. Rouge wasn't so close to the new arrival and wasn't hurt either, but i wasn't so lucky. I had not seen the fist in time. It hit me against my torso and i couldn't sworn i felt something inside me crack as i was flung quite a few metres away. I slid on the ground another metre as i came to a stop. A gaint robot stomped into the hangar. It had the colors and the logo that were typical on an Eggman robot. It had extra armor and everything about it was huge. And so was the strenght it used.
My face contorted in pain as it felt like my lower belly was on fire. My arms wrapped around my waist and i curled up in pain. "Shadow!" Rouge yelled in shock and panic. Sonic growled in anger. "You make sure that he's okay. I'll get rid of this robot." He growled and ran to the robot. Rouge flew over to me and sat on her knees besides me. "Shadow? Are you okay?" She asked and rested her hand on my shoulder. "It hurts." I grimaced as a small pool of blood gathered underneath the lower half of my body. "You're bleeding! But where?" Rouge wondered as she checked me for wounds, but found none. "Sonic, he's bleeding!" She yelled over to him. The said hedgehog turned to us right before getting hit himself and flung into the nearest wall.
It didn't have much effect as Sonic was right back on his feet. He speeded back over to the gigantic robot and spindashed against it's armor plated chest. He bounced back as he could not get through the extra armor plating on the first try. But he still had left quite a dent in it. Sonic growled and spindashed against it again, making it stumble backwards and made it tumble to the metal floor. He bounced of again and immediatly spindashed through it's chest. The hedgehog's rage had enabled him to defeat the robot much faster then should be possible.
Sonic climbed out of the hole he had created and and jumped off of the robot. He stumbled a little as he was a bit shaken up from that last attack and approached us when he found his footing again. "How is he?" Sonic asked and went to his knees next to Rouge. "I don't know. He's bleeding from somewhere, but i don't know where." Rouge said. Sonic tried to check for any injuries, but i stopped him. "Don't touch me!" I snapped as moving me hurted my lower body. But Sonic didn't need to check. He already saw where the blood came from. "Are you bleeding through your pants?" He asked in disbelieve. "What?" I winced. "You need to go to the hospital." He said while lifting me up in his arms and ran towards the nearest hospital. "Get back here Sonic! I'm not done with you!" Eggman yelled as the three of us escaped the building. Sonic didn't listen and just kept on running.
Within ten minutes we arrived at the nearest hospital. Sonic called for help and a doctor immediatly rushed over to us. Sonic followed his instructions and laid me on the bed in one of the rooms. I sat up as Rouge helped me to take my trenchcoat off. "How're you feeling?" She asked once my trenchcoat hung over her arm. "The pain is almost gone. I barely feel anything there." I said as i laid down like the doctor told me to. "I'm sorry, but i need to ask you two to wait outside." The doctor said. Sonic and Rouge reluctantly left me in the room after giving one last glance at me. "Don't worry, we will take good care of him." The doctor said as he shooed them out of the room.
An hour and a half passed by before the doctor came walking out of the room. He wheeled the bed i laid in out of the room and to the elevator for employees. "Wait! Where are you going?" Sonic asked as he and Rouge followed us. The doctor stayed behind as another doctor and a nurse or two continued their way to the elevator. "We found a disturbance in his lower belly. It might've caused the bleeding and we're on our way to surgically remove it." He explained the two. "Listen, i need to go now. We'll update you about the situation when we're done." He said and quickly hopped up on the elevator before it left. Sonic sighed and sat back down on his seat. "I hate all this waiting." Rouge complained and sat down on the chair next to him. "You're not the only one." Sonic said and leant back against his chair.
The elevator came to a halt on the next floor. The doors opened and the bed was wheeled out of the elevator and into the nearest free surgical room. "What's going on?" I asked and hoped that at least somebody would want to tell me what the hell was going on. "The doctor found something in your lower region that needs to be removed. We're preparing for surgery now." A nurse informed me while the two doctors got ready. "Found what?" I asked. My voice was a bit muffled as she placed a mask over my muzzle. The air the mask provided me had some sort of sedative in it instead of ordinary oxygen. "We don't know, that's what we're going to find out. All we know is that it's abnormal and needs to be removed before it can cause you serious harm." She explained while i was slowly starting to feel tired. I tried to answer something, but only a mix between a groan and a bunch of gibberish left my lips as my eye lids started to feel heavy. "Just sleep. You'll see that when you wake up, you'll be in your own room on your way to recovery." The nurse comforted me before i fell into a deep sleep.
Three hours had passed by when i slowly woke up. My eyes opened for a moment before closing again. They still felt so heavy. I moaned when i tried to say something to catch somebody's attention. "Hey, you're awake. "I heard a male voice say. I moaned again as i tried to ask who was in the room with me. I tried to sit up, but someone held me down. "Shadow, don't strain yourself, you need to rest." I heard him say. My eyes finally opened half way and stayed open for once. "Sonic?" I said once i recognized the cobalt hero in front of me. "Oh good, you remember me." Sonic's sighed in relief and leant on the rails of the hospital bed i laid on. I tried to say something, but i couldn't form any words.
"The doctor hasn't told us anything yet. But your doctor, doctor Carthoff, came by to help him with whatever the hell it was they took out of you." Sonic said. "Carthoff? Where's Rouge?" I was finally able to ask. "She needed to report back to the commander, but she'll be back as soon as she's done." He said. "What did they do during the surgery?" I asked as i could not remember why they performed a surgery on me. Sonic looked at me with a blank expression as he had just mentioned the reason, but i hadn't been fully awake. "They had to remove something from inside of you." Sonic explained.
"Inside of me?" I repeated. "Yeah, why?" Sonic asked as he watched me lift the blanket up. I reached underneath it and pulled the hospital dress up. I saw a line of stitches on my lower belly. But that wasn't the only thing that i noticed. The bump was gone. That couldn't have been a good sign. "Shadow?" Sonic asked as he noticed the absent look in my eyes. "Shadow!" He called for me again. "Hmm? What?" I asked and lowered the blanket. "Is something the matter? When i mentioned that thing inside of you, you sort of spaced out." He said. "Oh.... It's nothing." I answered and snuggled underneath my blanket. "I can understand that you want to rest. I'll be back later to check up on you." Sonic said and gave me a friendly pat on the shoulder before leaving. I watched him leave from the corners of my eyes before closing them and falling asleep once more.
It didn't take long before i was awoken again by the feeling of someone else in the room with me. The soft closing of the door confirmed my suspisions. "Shadow? Are you awake?" A new voice asked. I recognized the voice as the one from Doctor Carthoff and so i opened my eyes and looked up to her. "Ah, you're awake. Good." Carthoff said and moved her eyes from me towards a clipboard she held in her arms. "Carthoff?" I asked in confusion upon seeing her. I guess Sonic was right. She really was here. The female doctor looked at me when i called her name. She noticed my tired and confused expression and decided to explain why she was here.
Carthoff pulled something off of the clipboard and handed to me something that looked like a brown envelope. The upper part had been torn open before, but taped back closed. The doctor must've seen the results already. "What's this?" I asked and held it in front of me. "It's the results of your blood test. I had recieved it through mail yesterday. I wanted to call you as soon as i read it, but on G.U.N they said that you were on a mission. Not to soon after Rouge called to tell me what happened to you. She was worried that it had something to do with the bump on your stomache." Carthoff explained. I wasn't really paying attention to her explanation. I was more interested in the envelope in my hands.
"You can open it if you want to." She said. I briefly looked at her before turning the envelope around and tearing the upper part open. I pulled one piece of paper out and read that it really was my blood test results. I read every word on it before looking at her in confusion. "It's confusing, isn't it? It took me a while before i figured it out myself. I tried calling you as soon as i did." Carthoff said and extended her hand to me. I handed her the envelope back and she took it to look at it again. "As you must've read, your Mobian DNA seemed to be normal, but your Black Arms DNA...." Her voice slowly came to a stop there.
Carthoff pulled something else from the clipboard and handed it to me. It was the statistics of my Black Arms DNA not to long after the Black Arms invasion. "These statistics is what we think is normal for Black Arms such as yourself, but the one i got back from the blood test results has changed dramaticly." She said. "It's as if your..... changing...." She said. "Changing? How?" I asked confused about all of this. This didn't seem to make sense to me. "The sudden change doesn't seem to affect you on the inside, but it does affect you on the inside. There is a drastic change with your hormones. There is a significant drop in what seems to be masculine hormones and a significant rise in what seems to be feminine hormones." She said.
"Feminine hormones? What does that mean?" I asked and felt myself becoming a bit scared as i suspected where this conversation might lead to. "Shadow." Carthoff started and looked down. She didn't know how to tell me this. Especially not after what had happened to me this morning. "You might've been pregnant." She said and looked back up to me. My eyes widened as i watched her with a pure shock on my facial features.
The sound of a plastic cup of coffee falling to the floor made us known i wasn't the only one shocked to hear this. Carthoff looked at the door opening to see Rouge standing there frozen in shock. "I see that the two of you need a moment alone. I'll be back later to discuss this matter with you." Carthoff said and gathered the envelope and statistics before leaving the two of us alone.
It took her a while, but Rouge finally snapped out of our shocked state. Rouge sighed and flattened her ears. She wore a saddened and sympathetic look in her eyes as she approached me. She pushed the rails down, sat down on the edge of the hospital bed and wrapped her arms around me and pulled me into a hug. "I miscarried." I realised and Rouge's hold on my tightened. "I'm so sorry, Shadow." She told me and stroked my quills in a comforting manner. "Than.... what they took out of me....." I muttered and felt a pang of guilt and pain in my heart the deeper the news sank in. "I'm so sorry." Rouge repeated.
After what looked like a very long time, but was actually a minute or two, we pulled away. "Everything'll be alright." Rouge said and placed her hands on my cheeks when i looked down and gave me a comforting smile. "Do you want me to contact the father?" I was completely taken by surprise when she asked that out of nowhere. The father? I had no idea who the father was or even could be. But there was a reason for that. "I don't know." I muttered as quiet as i could ass i looked down almost in shame. Unfortunatly, Rouge's sensitive ears had heard me. "Don't know?" She repeated in shock and confusion. She was having a completely wrong image of me.
She was a bit reluctant to ask me the next question, but she knew she had to do it. "Have you done it with, you know, more than one person for these past two months?" Rouge carefully asked. "Rouge, i'm many things, but i'm not a whore!" I yelled as i felt a bit, rather alot, insulted by her question. "I'm not judging you. Everyone makes mistakes even the Ultimate Lifeform." Rouge to make me feel better in confessing to her with who i had slept with, but that would not work with me. Especially since i know for sure that i have not slept with anyone. "I haven't slept with anyone!" I told her, but she didn't seem to buy it. I guess i couldn't blame here. Babies needed to come from somewhere.
Rouge was trying to be as patient as possible with me after what happened, but she was becoming a bit angry when i didn't confess anything to her. "Shadow, listen-" She started. "No you listen! I have not slept with anyone! I'm still a virgin!" I stated and seemed to catch her by surprise. "Than how is this possible?" She asked. "I don't know how it happened either." I said and hung my shoulders. Rouge sighed.
Everything was quiet between the two of us again. The silence between us was somewhat awkward and tense. Rouge's eyes fell on the spilled coffee and she remembered that she still had to clean that up. She stood up and walked into the small bathroom that was connected to my room. She tore off a few pieces of toilet paper and walked back out. She took the cup and cleaned the floor with the paper. She threw the cup and wet paper into the trash bin before walking out of the room. Probably to get a new cup of coffee.
I watched her leave before closing my eyes. Despites having slept for quite a while and spending the last two hours in bed, i still felt exhausted. So it didn't take long before i fell into a deep sleep. Rouge came walking back with a new plastic cup only to find me in a deep slumber. Her ears flattened a little as she noticed that i was sleeping with a hand on my lower belly.
Two days later i was fired from the hospital. Sonic was nice enough to come and pick me up once i was dressed up and ready to leave. Even though i could get back home on my own, it was nice to have some company.
"How're you feeling?" Sonic asked as we walked down the sidewalk. Just like Rouge and his friends, he had also recieved the news of my possible miscarriage. But unlike them, he wasn't so quick to judge me. Or he was atleast good at hiding it. "I don't know. Strange." I answered. "That's understandable. Not everyone goes through what you've been through." He said. The rest of the walk home was almost completely in silence. Only a few words were said, but with those few Sonic had made sure that i knew he was not judging me and he would be there if i needed him. Well, he's called a hero for a reason, isn't hhe?
We arrived at my and Rouge's house after a long walk. I opened the front door and met with a bunch of yelling coming from inside. The loud voices belonged to Knuckles and Rouge. They were having an argument about something. I heard my name being called several times. My ears moved into the direction of the sounds and i tried to silent. Knuckles, who had never liked me from the beginning, was trying to convince her that i was a bat influence on her and told her that he was worried of her ending up the same way as i did. That echidna was obviously one of many poeple who immediatly concluded that i was a slut who had a diffirent lover every single night.
"bastard." I growled and dropped my bag with blood drenched clothes on the floor before running up the stairs to my room. I didn't want to face either one of them right now. Sonic sighed when he had heard the conversation aswell. He closed the front door behind him, swung the bag over his shoulder and walked inside the livingroom. Knuckles and Rouge jumped upon seeing him arrive. "Can't the two of you argue in silence? Shadow heard everything." Sonic told the two mobians before leaving the livingroom and searched for the laundry room.
Rouge left Knuckles alone in the room and followed Sonic. The hedgehog kneeled down in front of the washer and dumped the clothes inside. He closed the door, chose the right program and the right laundry detergent before turning the machine on. "I didn't know you could with these things." Rouge said and leant against the door frame. "Of course i know how to work with them. What else happens to my and Tails' clothes." He stated. Rouge had to admit that it was a pretty valid argument.
"How is Shadow?" Rouge asked after a while. "How do you think he is? He's dealing with the fact that he might've lost his first child that seems to come out of nowhere, practically everyone is calling him a dirty manwhore, my friends, except for Tails and Cream, don't really seem to give any support and his only friend is being convinced to leave him by her boyfriend when he needs her the most." Sonic summed up. "How do you think he is?" He repeated. Apparently he was pretty upset with this whole situation aswell. "I didn't mean to make it sound that way. I'm not leaving him." Rouge said to defend herself. "That's not what Shadow thinks." He said. The female mobian stayed silent.
"You need to go upstairs and talk to him." Sonic suggested. Rouge wasn't so sure. Sonic sighed and rubbed the back of his neck. "Listen, Shadow is in a painfull and difficult situation now. He needs all the support he can get and he will only get that from me, Tails, Cream, Vanilla and you. You need to go up there and talk to him." He said. Rouge, who was now finally convinced, nodded in agreement. "You're right, i should." She said and made her way into the hallway and up the stairs.
When she arrived, Rouge approached my room and softly knocked on the door. There was no answer. "Shadow?" She called and pressed her ear against the door to listen for any sort of movement or answer, but there was none. "Shadow? Shadow, open this door!" She demanded as she was starting to panic. She took hold of the doorknob, twisted it and practically ripped the door out of it's hinges. She quickly discovered her panic was all for nothing when she saw her friend slowly waking up from his slumber because of the loud noises she made.
"Rouge? What's wrong?" I asked and sat up. I watched her with a tired look in my eyes. "Oh.... You were sleeping." Rouge said and sighed in relief. "I was?" I muttered and scratched behind my ear. Rouge sat down on the edge of my bed and placed a hand on my leg to draw my attention. "Listen, about what Knuckles said." She started. "I know that it was hurtfull to hear, but you need to know that no matter what happens, even if you so happen to have more then one lover, i will not abandon you." She reassured me. I didn't know if what she said was true, but it did manage to appease me for a while. I didn't answer and Rouge took it as a good sign since i didn't say anything bad either. So she stood up from my bed and walked towards the door to leave.
"I'm not a whore." I muttered and looked down as i heard the door close. I laid down on my matrass and curled up. I sighed and tried to fall asleep again since i still felt pretty tired. But it somehow wasn't as easy as it was before. Maybe it was because i had been rudely awoken just a few minutes ago? That was my only explanation. I reopened my eyes and sat back up. There was no way i would be falling back asleep. "Damnit." I sighed and swung my legs over the edge of my bed. Maybe there was something i could do to help me fall back asleep.
My eyes fell on the tv screen that had been standing here for atleast quite a few months before i had come to live here. In my two year stay i've never bothered to use it. The tv wasn't exactly an old model, but it wasn't the newest one either. Maybe now it could come in handy. I pushed myself up from the bed and walked over to the tv cabinet. I searched through the nearly empty drawers and found the remote. I went to my knees and plugged in th eplug of the tv and stood back up straight. I pushed the on-button on the tv and saw a red light appear on the bottom left. I pressed a number on the remote and sat back down as something slowly appeared on the screen.
The program that was one wasn't exactly an interesting one. So i just went ahead and changed the channel. Nothing interesting on that one either. I changed the channel again and kept changing it for quite a few times untill i stopped at one channel. It was called History channel and they were showing a program about supernatural beings. Or more specificly, they were talking about aliens. I didn't know why i stopped to watch this. Maybe it was because i was an alien half breed myself. Not that it would matter. They weren't exactly talking about Black Arms so it shouldn't be interesting to me. Although it could be that some aliens could be similar to eachother. Maybe they were talking about one that was similar to them? Or were they talking about one that was completely different? I don't know. What i did know is that i found that program strangely interesting.
The historians and cryptologists were talking about strange artifacts that might've been left behind by aliens. Oddly enough they were talking about piramids and other famous monuments that were hard to explain. Like stonehenge or the statues on Easter Island. Apparently it was that hard to believe that poeple back then could operate, what back then would be considerate, heavy machinery. But to be fair, poeple from way back would think the same if they knew that our planet breaking apart is like a normal monday to us.
They were talking on and on about the crop circles and strange rock formations that was found before talking about Area 51 and Roswell. Those two locations were known for alien encounters, but i sometimes wondered if they were true. I would be a hypocrite if i denied the existence of both aliens and encounters since i'm partially an alien myself.
By now i was lying on my bed on my side with my arm holding my head up and the remote in my other hand. Along the way i had somehow dressed out of my clothes so i was only wearing my boxers. My head kept falling forward when my plan to doze of was working. I was slowly losing my interest and focus on the program when i was close to falling asleep.
I laid my head down on my pillow and closed my tired eyes as i gave up on fighting it. I was close to dozing off when my ears twitched upon hearing one of the historians talk about strange round artifacts a group of pre-teens found in an old abandoned barn they were playing in. They had taken it back to one of the kids' their parents and they handed it over to the police, who in turn gave them to the goverment to perform experiments on it to find out exactly what they were. I opened my eyes as i had decided to follow that small part before falling asleep. I sat up and leant back against the wall in an attempt to stay awake.
I didn't know what they were talking about, but i was strangely attracted to those odd artifacts those kids found. I was about to shrugg it away when they told us what those artifacts might be. Alien eggs. I jumped in shock when i realised something. And there was only one way to find out if i was right or not. I jumped up from my bed and quickly dressed up again. I turned the tv off and walked out of my room. I walked down the stairs, but stopped halfway when i heard voices talking in the livingroom. They belonged to Knuckles and Rouge again. But this time Sonic was in on it to. I didn't hear anything of conversation because i didn't even care to pay attention to it. They were probably talking about my currect situation anyway.
I jumped down the last steps of the stairs and walked out through the front door. The door to the livingroom opened and a pair of footsteps followed me. "Shadow? Where are you going?" A voice asked. I turned and saw that Sonic was the one talking to me. "I need to make sure of something. I don't know if it will take long, but i'll be back as soon as i can." I said and walked into the direction of the hospital. "make sure of something? Make sure of what?" Sonic asked and followed me. "Nothing of your concern! I just need to know something that is important to me." I explained. "In this about your miscarriage?" He asked and made me halt. "It is, isn't it?" He asked and i looked down. "I just want to know what it is that i carried for only a month. Is that so wrong?" I asked and turned to look up to him with my ears flattened against my skull. "No of course not! I was just worried that you were going to do...well..." Sonic said, but his voice trailed off. "Do what? Something stupid?" I asked him. He sighed. I guess he was thinking that.
I turned back around and walked down the sidewalk again. A pair of footsteps joined mine as i walked. I turned my head to look at my side to see that Sonic was following me. "What're you doing?" I asked. "i'm worried about you, so i figured that i should go along with you." He said and walked next to me. I didn't reply to him and just turned my head to look in front of me again. I didn't mind him joinging me so i kept quiet about it.
We soon arrived at the hospital and walked inside. "Where do you think they put her?" I asked. "Her?" Sonic asked in confusion. "Well, yeah, babies always start out as girls before some become boys. So mine was deffinetly a girl." I glared at him as if he had done something wrong. "Sorry." He apologized as he figured that i was a bit sensitive about the topic and that he had inadvertently insulted me. I looked in front of me again and searched for someone who could help me find what i seek.
After two hours and a half had passed before the two of us sat down in the waiting room. My ears flattened and i sighed as i looked down. "I'm sure that we'll find it." Sonic said as he tried to encourage me, but it wasn't really working. "Sonic, we searched the whole hospital and there was no sign of her." I said. "Maybe they've taken her somewhere." He suggested. I thought about it. It could be possible. Maybe they took her to a mortuary to do an autopsy or something. I gasped as i suddenly knew exactly where she had been taken. They had taken her to the G.U.N headquarters. I shot up from my chair and ran towards the front entrance of the hospital. "Shadow? Shadow wait!" Sonic yelled in surprise when he saw his rival run for it. He got up from his chair and jogged after me.
Outside of the hospital i halted and looked both ways in the street to try and remember the way to the G.U.N headquarters. "Good, you stopped. Where are you headed?" Sonic asked when his jogging came to a stop next to me. "To G.U.N! She must be there!" I stated and ran into the direction of my job.  Sonic had no problem keeping up and not because of how naturally fast he it. But because i could not run as fast as i usually could because of everything that my body has been forced through. I was still healing after all this time.
"How do you know that for sure?" Sonic asked as he jogged next to me. "I used to be a usefull experiment for them. Of course they will do something to her!" I practically yelled to him. Sonic came to a stop in front of me and stopped me by placing his hands on my shoulders. "Aren't you being a little paranoid? There's no way that they would do something that cruel." He tried to convince me, but i knew better. I was a practically born and raised in G.U.N. Nobody knew them better than i did and doing something so cruel to a stillborn wasn't so far fetched. I refused to answer him since i was in a hurry to get to the base. I pushed him away from me and continued on my way. "Shadow." Sonic called for me and chased me again.
We quickly arrived and we made our way towards the commander's office. Few soldiers tried to stop us, but i just ignored them and walked right past them. Sonic tried to tell them that it was nothing, but it wasn't an easy task to do when he wanted to follow me and make sure that i wasn't doing anything stupid at the same time.
I barged into the commander's office and banged my fists angrily on his desk. "What the hell is wrong with you?!" I yelled in anger. Sonic came walking into the room and closed the door behind him so we could have a bit of privacy. Not that privacy was an option if i kept yelling like that. The commander looked at me with a blank expression. He was speechless. He had not expected me to come barging into his office.
From his expression i knew that he was confused about my sudden visit. I growled as his expression angered me even more. "Don't play dumb with me!" I yelled without giving him the time to even try to ask what was going on. "Tell me what you've done to her!" I demanded with a growl. "Her?" The commander muttered. He intertwined his hands on his desk and straightened himself. "I see that you are here for your stillborn." He said. I don't know what, but something about the way he said 'stillborn' pissed me off.
The commander flinched when my eyes narrowed in a threatening way. Even he knew not to mess with me whenever i was pissed. So he knew that he should be carefull. He was treading dangerous grounds after all. "Shadow, maybe you should-" Sonic tried to tell me to calm down, but someone decided to interupt him. "come with me." A feminine voice said as if continuing the hero's sentence. I looked over my shoulder and towards the door frame. The other two who were present in the room looked in the same direction aswell. Doctor Carthoff was standing in the doorway. She wore her usual serious expression, but something was off about it. "Carthoff." I said upon acknowledging the human doctor. She gestured towards the hallway. Knowing that i could trust her, i followed her gesture and walked after her when she walked down the hallway.
We passed many corridors, stairs, elevators, rooms and entered the underground part of this base. I felt uncomfortable as the elevator got lower and nearer to the very last level. I knew this part of the base like the back of my hand, for i had lived in it for more than fifty years. The elevator doors opened to reveal a darkly lit hallway. Carthoff walked out into the hallway and the movement censors made the lights light up her path even brighter than it did just a second before. I swiftly followed her.
As we walked on, i looked around as if this was the first time i had been in here. Carthoff didn't notice the fact that i was getting more uncomfortable by the second and just kept walking. We passed several laboratories and containment chambers that could be holding an experiment like me. Although it was tempting, i didn't want to find out. Despites what had happened to me these past two months, i still had a pretty good life compared to what i had grown up in. Finding out if there were other experiments would result in a one-way ticket back here. And this time it could be for the rest of my life. Which could be pretty long considering the fact that i was build to last long.
The silence and the lack of scientists around here indicated that it was past working hours. The scientists all had finished their shifts and gone home to their families. Forgetting all the poor souls that were trapped inside of here.
"Shadow!" Doctor Carthoff called for me when she arrived at the door at the end of the last hallway and noticed that i had stayed behind lost in thoughts. I snapped out of my spaced out trance and ran over to her. Carthoff typed the password into the number pad and a door opened. She walked on and i followed.
"What is this?" I asked. I had never been in this hallway before. Was it new? "It's a new wing that has been added to the underground. There was a need for more laboratories. It was build when you were asleep in that cryogenetic capsule." Carthoff explains. "I see." I simply answered as i looked around.
We walked through this new wing untill we stopped at one of the many metal doors. She typed in another number password and opened the door. I tried to look past her as it opened, but the room was to dark to see in. We walked inside and the light turned on.
My eyes widened. This place was like any other laboratory. Chemicals, counters, a metal table, everything you could find in a lab was here. What made my eyes go wide, was what laid on the examination table that stood in the middle of the room. A white cloth was spread out on top of it. But there was a lump in it, indicating that there was something underneath. The bloodspots on the cloth confirming that fact.
I froze in place as i realised what it was. I stood there and stared at it. Carthoff approached it and stood next to the table. She turned to face me. She was waiting for me to do something or atleast say something. My wide eyes moved from the lump, to her and back to the lump. I felt anxiety making it's way into my heart. I had come all this way, caused such a choas in both this base and the hospital, just to see what was lying in front of me. But i suddenly lost the courage to walk up to the table and see it.
"Shadow?" Carthoff asked when i didn't move or say anything for a long time. I gazed up to her. "I had been hoping to get you here. You need to see this." She said. My body, as if having a mind of it's own, moved towards the examination table. My hand rose up and took hold of the cloth and hovered in place. "Do you want me to do it?" Carthoff asked with a concerned expression. She understood how hard this was. What i was about to find could've been my child after all.
My eyes squeezed shut as i lifted the cloth. I was to scared to open my eyes. I feared what i was about to find lying in front of me. But i knew that i had to face it sooner or later. I took  a deep breath and opened my eyes.
"What is this?" I asked softly. What laid in front of me was not an undeveloped child. It didn't even resemble one. That baffled me. If those bloodtest results had told them that i had been pregnant, than what did i carry inside of me for a whole month? "What is this?" I asked and looked up to the female doctor. "I had hoped that you could tell me." Carthoff answered. I looked back at what laid before me. It was a bloody lump. I couldn't tell what this was. It wasn't a baby, that was for sure, so what was it? And why did it cause a sudden explosion of feminine hormones in my DNA?
A wave of relief washed over me when i realised something. I had not miscarried. I smiled and almost laughed out loud out of happiness. Carthoff was puzzled by my behaviour. I decided to answer to her confusion. "I haven't lost my child." I smiled brightly. I didn't smile alot, but right now i couldn't help it. I felt so happy and reliefed. I turned and almost skipped out of the room. Carthoff watched me go. Her expression a mix of confusion, worry and speechless. She was worried that i didn't understand the gravity of this situation. But how could i? I was just so happy that i hadn't miscarried. That was the only fact i cared about.
I walked into the hallway and towards the elevator that we had come from. "You coming?" I yelled over to the human doctor. It took her a while, but she finally did come back to the elevator. I pressed the button to get to the ground level and waited for us to arrive. It was quiet during the ride. I wasn't so bothered by it, but my companion was. She needed to say something, but couldn't form the words.
"Shadow?" Carthoff called for me after a while. I looked at her to show her that i was listening. "Shadow.... You do know what this means, right?" She asked carefully. She didn't really know what to tell me as she was a bit confused by this whole situation. "What do you mean?" I asked. I didn't see any reason to be worried or shocked. So i didn't understand why she was. Maybe it was just natural for doctors to get worried so easily. "You're shrugging this whole thing off as if nothing happened." She said. "That's because i just find out that i wasn't pregnant at all. Wouldn't you do the same?" I asked and cut her off without meaning to. "You're missing the point here." Carthoff said with a more confronting tone. I stayed silent and waited for her to continue as she was going to get to the point of what she was trying to say to me. "What i am trying to say is that you seem to ignore the fact that something serious might be going on. There must be a reason why that was in you." Carthoff explained.
"You mean that.... I could be gravely ill?" I asked. At the same time the elevator arrived at the ground level and the two doors opening. Carthoff slowly nodded. I looked down. This time i was the one who was speechless.
"Shadow?" I heard a voice say. I looked up into the hallway and saw Sonic standing there. He had been waiting for us to return. "Was it that bad?" Sonic asked. "No... I, huh, didn't miscarry." I answered and exited the elevator. Carthoff did the same. "That's a good thing isn't it?" Sonic asked. I shrugged as an answer. "I'm going home." I said and walked towards the entrance. "It's time that i'll head home aswell. My shift ended quite a while ago." Carthoff said and followed me.
Sonic didn't follow me back. He stayed put near the elevator. He glanced at it and made sure that nobody was around before stepping inside and going to the lowest level. He wanted to know exactly what had left me so confused and speechless. He arrived at the lowest level in no time and walked out into the darkened hallway. The lights turned on their own again as he passed the censor. He continued to walk down the hallway. He was close, he could feel it.
Sonic turned a corner and kept walking untill he, after a while of figuring out the passwords, finally enters the laboratory that I and Doctor Carthoff had been in before. His eyes widened slightly as he immediatly noticed the lump that had been covered with the white cloth once more. He approached it and reached for it. He wanted to pull the cloth off of the examination table and see what it was, but he didn't get that far.
"Sonic? What are you doing in here?" A man's voice said. Sonic turned to look at the door and saw that the commander standing there. "Nothing." He answered. The commander sighed. "I know that everything that has been happening with Shadow is worrying you, but that does not mean you can sneak around in this base. Especially in this part of the facility." The human male said with dismay. He was sincerely displeased by how Sonic had sneaked into this part of the base and was nosing around in places where he wasn't supposed to be.
"get out of here." The commander demanded when Sonic didn't answer. Sonic, knowing that there was nothing he could do here anymore, walked past the commander and towards the elevator. He knew that this wouldn't be the last he would see of this underground base.
