Billy Goat Grotto In the forest, across the bridge Into the dark, warm cave There is a shrine lit with candles And above it is engraved: “How do you do, my dear friend Are you lost? Well now you know That here upon this laden path Lies the Billy Goat Grotto” The walls are lined with cashmere, Tin cans scatter the floor I ask if he might stay here And be my bride forevermore But empty caverns, which empty hearts Do fill for a time, Are not the place for candid love Nor seekers of his kind He stands and gives a carefree glance Beckoning with his smile That I may leave this hollow place And wander for a while
