The tavern was closed, its residents eating their dinner. Maeve, Adira, and Brutus were all at the table and enjoying each other's company. Laughter could be heard, silly jokes were made, the joy a family brings was all on display. But the family fun couldn't be shared with everyone, for someone was denied such joy themselves with their family. Maddie. For she had broken basitin law by becoming pregnant when it wasn't matting season, and returning to her people would mean facing her crime. But facing the crime in front of her people wasn't her biggest worry, for she feared most what her mother would say.\n\n\nThose were the thoughts going through her mind as she was preparing her bath. The door was closed, the windows shut, the room only lit with candles. She hid her pregnant condition from everyone outside the tavern. Her new fresh clothes were near, clean towels, a brush to clean herself. The last bucket of water was poured into the bathtub, her bath was ready. She took off her clothes with some reluctance and threw them into a pile, now naked and ready to clean her fur of dirt. The basitin had one foot in the bathtub, feeling the tepid warm water. But the second foot did not step into the bathtub, a thought had interrupted her. She withdrew the foot out of the bathtub and stepped in front of a mirror.\n\n\nHer belly had grown, changed shape from a curve to an orb. She learned of the nightmare growing inside her when it was 20 weeks along. Now it was 30 weeks, the leech was growing stronger and bigger. She clenched her hand in anger and sadness, raised and ready to strike. But against who or what? The mirror that showed her the nightmare, or her own body that carried the nightmare? Her fist found a target, but not one she was aiming for. The wall she punched was undamaged, her anger fled faster than she could hit it. She withdrew her fist from the wall she punched and stepped into the bathtub, sat down in the still tepid water and hoped to forget the nightmare.\n\n\nShe quickly splashed some water against her face to calm her mind, then began washing herself free of dirt, hair, arm, and face. The legs were harder to properly wash as her belly made it difficult to bend forward. There was only spot left that needed cleaning and that was the belly, and She hated washing her belly because it was sensitive and it felt like she was keeping the damn leech clean. She splashed some water on her belly and gently cleaned it with the brush, clenching her fangs in disgust. A few tortuous minutes went by as the leech's home was cleaned but it was finally done. She lets out a sigh of relief, closed her eyes and spends the last few minutes simply relaxing, the world around her seemed to disappear along with all its troubles. But that illusion was quickly shattered. She felt her belly moving and opened her eyes again to see it bulging and swaying. The parasite, the leech just wouldn't leave her alone. Wouldn't let her relax. The creature then kicked and kicked, causing her a fair amount of pain. She couldn't take it anymore. \"SHUT UP!! SHUT UP!! JUST LEAVE ME ALONE!! WHY MUST YOU MAKE MY LIFE SUCH A NIGHTMARE!!? WHY!!?\". Her belly went quiet, no longer swaying or moving. She buried her face in her hands. \"Just leave me alone\".\n\n\nShe got out the bathtub, got a clean towel and dried herself. She then put on her new clothes and took the dirt ones with her, not even bothering with covering her ankles as her belly made it very difficult to do. It used to feel like\nshe was walking around naked without ankles covered, but now it felt somewhat normal for her.\n\n\nShe went to her room and saw a letter on the bed. She picked it and saw it had her mother's seal. Her heart dropped, panic was taking over. She had sent a letter to her mother about the pregnancy and why she hadn't returned, and now she was holding the reply to that letter. She removed the seal and opened the letter, her hands shacking and her breath quick. \"My dear Madelyn Adelaide. It brings me great joy to hear you are well. But it also brings me great pain to hear what has happened to you. It pains me that you had been fooled into fornicating with someone outside of the breeding season, and that you're now also carrying life within you. As you know, our rules are held above everything, even our own family. I may be the king and you my daughter, but i cannot ignore such a clear violation of the basitin rules. I, and the elders, hereby declare you exiled. Your homeland is your home no more. You may never return\". Signed King Jade Adelaide of the Eastern Basitin.\n\n\nExiled by her own mother. The words hit like a dagger through the heart. She fell to her knees, tears streaming down her cheeks, the very will to continue living had left her. Her entire life gone, all due to an error she didn't know she was committing. None of it her fault, yet was punished like it was. All she thought of now was how to end it all. She looked at the letter, now covered in tears, one last time to confirm her life was over. But then saw a piece of paper partially detach from the letter. She removed the piece of paper from the letter and saw something was written on it. \"Maddie, I'm sorry for writing such a terrible letter to you but it was the only way i knew to get this letter to you, without the officials checking it and asking questions. None of this is your fault, it's mine. I should've taught you about sex and it's dangers, i should've been a better mother. But i failed. I'm trying to find a loophole, anything, to get you pardoned from your crimes. I'll be damned if some idiotic stone rule is going to ruin MY daughter's life for some dumb innocent mistake that is my fault. And Maddie. Know that i will forever love you. Stay strong\". Your beloved mother, Jade.\n\n\nThe letter was now badly covered in tears it was no longer readable. She let go of the letter and looked out the window towards the Basitin Isles, towards the beacon of light amidst the darkness. \"Thanks, mom. I love you\".",
