The Heat of the Moment
"Still, it does you good to be out in the fresh air I always say."
The young, brown buck bounded his way across the field, following a well-trodden trail through the tall grass. Behind him, keeping pace but lagging slightly, was another young, grey buck. Dandelion and Hawkbit, friends and compatriots. In theory of course he should have been checking for danger, stopping, keeping watch, scenting... But the field was well known to the Watership owsla and the two bucks traversing it especially. There was unlikely to be any danger there that day so the rabbits felt they could take things easy.
That was, in fact, why they were there. There had been nothing to do back at the warren; dawn patrol was over and noon patrol lay hours ahead. They'd gone a little stir-crazy waiting for something to do; but possessed enough sense to know that, should they hang around too long, something would be found for them. Captain Bigwig was nothing if not a harsh taskmaster and took every opportunity to order about those under his command. (Which, of course, was everyone.) So they'd simply slipped out to take a nice, refreshing walk through a quiet, safe field. If pressed they could always say they were out patrolling for elil after all.
It wasn't much, but it wasn't bad; the air was fresh, the sun was warm and the grass was long. They could take their time, or stop for a snack or even a quick nap should the mood take them. Though at present the mood taking the both of them was lingering boredom. Hawkbit especially found his mind wandering. He wanted to do something. Exactly what he wasn't sure, but he was a rabbit of action, not of fluffing about here and there! As he loped along he was filled with the desire to simply make a mad dash, to burst forward and knock his friend out of the way, streak, laughing towards the horizon. He paused. Or someone...
