breathing that made Skater pause.\n\nHe'd been poking around in the long grass for acorns. That it was late spring might have been considered a bit of an obstacle, vis-avis nut gathering; but only by those who were not aware of the finer points of squirrel life. For late spring was when acorns sprouted; those left over from the previous year responding to the rising temperatures by bursting forth in bud and leaf. Many had been properly buried and forgotten; far below the soil now they were not worth going after and dirying paws. Instead he pilfered those that had simply been overlooked, left in the leaf litter and now high and dry, as it were, sprouting in the sunlight. [i]Those[/i] acorns had a... delicate taste. As they sprouted and tasted the soil and sun they acquired a certain flavor he found quite entrancing. It was sweeter somehow, more crisp. But he only had a few weeks before they would shrivel and rot, consumed by the sprouting seedlings. So he searched with gusto; for there is nothing a squirrel liked more then a fresh bunch of nuts.\n\nIt was his first spring out by himself, a young squirrel out to seek his fortune, his territory, or just a nice cozy hole to call his own. He was independent and free, an exhilarating feeling indeed, but freedom for success was also freedom for disaster. He was an especially plump and tender squirrel and would make a fine meal for any hawk, weasel or overconfident seagull that came across him. If so that could mean a threat was nearby.
