Swans drifted together in pairs within their pond at the park. Eleanor walked along the water's edge and watched longingly as they huddled closely and entwined their slender necks. How she wished that she could share that feeling with the one she wanted most. Ever since that fateful night under the shower of fireworks, Eleanor could not relieve her mind of the mysterious dog who stole her heart. She had pondered and planned for hours on end on what she could possibly do to approach Ramsay and make him hers. However, all of her ideas were incomplete, much to her frustration. She needed a moment to rest her mind of such thoughts.\n\n She sat down for a moment and began to absentmindedly run her paw through the cool water. The sun’s rays and gentle breeze lulled her into a state of serenity. It was then that a rather strong wind broke through the air, causing Eleanor to shiver for a split second before regaining her composure. That is, until she caught the familiar scent of pine, muted rain, and iron.\n\n ‘It couldn't be, could it?’ Eleanor asked to herself as she stood suddenly while taking another whiff of the air. Sure enough, the scent was very much there and not just a figment of her mind. She abruptly stood to her feet and allowed herself to follow it. The smell became stronger the closer she drew and the farther she slipped away from society. It didn’t take long for her to reach the edge of the park to where the forest began. Confused, Eleanor stuck her nose into the air one more time, and then assuredly turned to lay her eyes on the one who had been plaguing her mind for days, Ramsay.\n\n As he began to make his way into the forest, he heard a loud shriek from behind him. He froze and snapped his head towards the source of the ear splitting sound. Eleanor jogged up to Ramsay while fluttering her eyes at him. Ramsay’s face expressed a disgruntled look, yet Eleanor knew it was his way of showing how coy he was.\n\n “Oh. Hello Eleanor,” Ramsay hissed between his teeth. “What a surprise to see you here.”\n\n “Hello to you too, Ramsay! And it is a wonderful surprise indeed! I didn't expect to see you here! Have you come to enjoy the park on such a beautiful day as well?” Eleanor asked with her tail lightly swaying.\n\n “No, I was simply on my way to catch myself a meal.” Ramsay replied as he turned to continue into the forest.\n\n “My stars that sounds like quite the venture! Is there room for one more?” Eleanor inquired as she inched closer to Ramsay.\n\n Ramsay was tempted to deny her request, but after turning his head back to glance at her he let out a low sigh and signalled her to follow him. With a tiny squee of joy, Eleanor eagerly trotted up to his side as they continued deeper into the forest.\n\n “Might I ask, why not just go to town to eat?” Eleanor queried.\n\n “I prefer the thrill of the hunt, it’s an invigorating sensation to catch one’s own meal.” Ramsay explained.\n\n “I suppose a hard earned meal is the one that's the most delicious.” Eleanor pondered aloud.\n\n Over boulders and through thickets, the pair marched on in search for something worthy of Ramsay. Time would pass before Ramsay would note a particular mound of animal leftovers or stare at a maze of footprints that went in every direction. In time, Eleanor’s feet started to ache and her stomach began to call for something back in town, while Ramsay didn’t seem to be fazed at all.\n\n “I’d hate to be a complainer,” Eleanor huffed and puffed, “but does it always take so long to catch a silly animal?”\n\n “Sometimes. This hunt is going by pretty quickly actually.” Ramsay muttered while sniffing a patch of hoof prints on the ground.\n\n “And how can you tell about that?”\n\n Ramsay motioned Eleanor to a bush and whispered, “Look through there. But be very quiet.”\n\n Eleanor peered through the bush and on the other side stood a small herd of white tailed deer. Though she was supposed to see them as a meal, Eleanor was awestruck by their poise, grace, and nobility. Ramsay began to survey them, trying to spot a worthy target. That’s when his eyes landed on a particular buck. Its eyes wore years of hard survival and it carried its body slower and more pained than the rest. The buck was ready to be set free, and Ramsay was not one to turn down such an offer.\n\n “Stay here. Don’t make a sound.” Ramsay whispered as he made his way down to the herd. Eleanor was bewildered by the stages of life unfolding before her eyes, almost like it was some sort of visual music. It drew her to try to get a better look.\n\n Ramsay soundlessly crawled closer to the silver buck until he was in position. Only a little closer... a little more… snap!\n\n The herd flew out in every direction and disappeared like ghosts of the forest. And Ramsay was left with nothing but a look of shock. A glance back to Eleanor described how, in her fascination, she leaned forward too far, causing her to step on a dry twig.\n\n Eleanor bared her teeth in a nervous smile as she lightly kicked the broken twig out of Ramsay's view. He simply closed his eyes and let out a deep sigh as he made his way back up to Eleanor.\n\n “I-I’m so sorry Cher. Didn't mean to-”\n\n “It’s fine.” uttered Ramsay as he walked past her.\n\n Eleanor trailed behind Ramsay as he continued his search. She felt her shame carving out her poor tender heart and Ramsay's silence aided in wrenching it out. High noon arrived and still the overbearing soundlessness crushed Eleanor’s chest. Finally as they approached a river, her spirit finally broke.\n\n “You know,” Eleanor relented, “I'm sure you may not want company at the moment. If you could point me to town, I'll get out of your hair.”\n\n “It wouldn’t be wise to send you off on your own.” He answered as he moved towards a high rock and stood on top of it, his eyes locked onto the river below. With a strong push, Ramsay leaped from his perch in to the foaming white waters.\n\n Eleanor gasped and ran to the bank of the river looking for any sign of Ramsay. Soon, he emerged from the river with a massive salmon flailing in his maw. His fur glistened and his muscular figure became exposed now that his pelt laid next to his skin. Eleanor knew she could have died then with no regrets.\n\n Ramsay heaved the monstrous fish on to the bank revealing to be at least half of Eleanor's size.\n\n “Besides,” Ramsay panted while shaking the water off his coat, “I thought you wanted to join me for a meal?”\n\n Eleanor’s heart dropped, her eyes widened, and she inhaled to scream out of joy, but Ramsay shushed her and called her to sit next to him. The salmon slowly disappeared as they ate in silence. This time, Eleanor didn't mind the lack of conversation, the sounds of nature were just fine.\n\n With her belly full and her soles aching, Eleanor groaned at the thought of the long walk home. She looked at her paw pads as Ramsay took notice of her discomfort, “If you’d like, I could carry you.” Eleanor shot back a surprised look, not expecting for him to make such an offer.\n\n “Ah, ahem! Well, if you are comfortable with carrying li'l o'l me around.” She nervously laughed. Without a second thought, Ramsay gently lowered himself next to her. Eleanor clumsily climbed on and held tight. “You're taller than I thought,” she noted as Ramsay began to rise from the ground. Their combined body heat made Eleanor's head fuzzy and the gentle sway from Ramsay walking further caused her eyes to become heavy. Soon she drifted away as there was not a more perfect time to be than where she was now.\n\n When she awoke, she found herself back at her cozy little shack with the moon now high up in the starry sky. Ramsay was nowhere to be found. And Eleanor wondered if it was all just a dream.
