The day was beautiful and sunny. Wind blew gently and the grass flowed like an emerald sea. That is, until Buster shattered the silence with a bombardment of coughs. He wheezed and spat out lumps of contagious slime as he laid miserably on his throne of trash. It was not two full days after Buster and Meera’s escape from the mining cave that the blistering cold moisture from there had Buster beaten to a miserable pulp.\n\n The sun's soft rays felt like an angel's back scratch, yet the whispering breeze felt like frostbitten daggers against his skin.\n\n “No Buster, the sewers are too stinky! Let's get lost for two days in some freezing flooded mine instead!” Buster crudely mocked Meera while snorting wetly.\n\n “What happened to you? You look like roadkill!” Meera gasped as she stepped into Buster’s line of sight.\n\n “Look at what you did to me!”\n\n “Me?!”\n\n “If we went where I wanted to go, I wouldn’t look like a train wreck! I'd teach you a lesson, but…” Buster heaved before snorting again loudly, “I don't wanna lose breakfast.”\n\n “Yeah, the idea that you so happily agreed to, and you happened to be the dumb fool to fall into the caverns that got us lost in the first place.” Meera shot back while rolling her eyes.\n\n “Yeah, well, it-it was still your dumb idea.” Buster harrumphed before covering his eyes from the sun's blinding light.\n\n Ignoring his comment, Meera stepped up to him and placed a paw on his forehead, “Sheesh, you’re burning up.” Meera noted with concern. “Are you going to be okay? Do you need anything?”\n\n “Nothin’ ol Buster couldn't get over by himself.” Buster halfheartedly chuckled and then coughed as a frown jutted across Meera’s face. \n\n “It sure doesn’t sound like it.” she remarked suspiciously. “Stay right there while I go see if I can fetch something to help you a little.”\n\n “I don't want anything, I said!” Buster groaned loudly.\n\n “Oh hush.” Meera tsked, “I'll be back. It won't be long!” Before Buster could further protest, she was already off.\n\n Meera trotted through the streets pondering her choices. ‘I could look for the stuff I need in the dump,’ she thought, ‘but Buster looked like he was in pretty bad shape. If I want him to get better soon, I should bring him something good.’ While thinking about her list of things to find, a flash of white stole her focus. Beyond a loose picket fence, dancing in the wind, was an ivory quilt, hung up on a clothesline. Meera slid between the wide spacing of the pickets and onto the property. She slithered up to the quilt and began to tug on it when a scream pierced her ears.\n\n A woman with a uni-brow and wiry black hair stood with a rifle in her hands not far from Meera and her prize to claim.\n\n “You filthy weasel! I knew there were giant weasels here taking my laundry!” the woman squawked. The deranged woman shot wildly from the hip, sending lead in all directions except Meera’s. With one large tug, Meera managed to rip the quilt from the laundry line and made a quick dash over the fence. Meera could hear the woman’s cries and curses to weasels everywhere as she sprinted down the street. Too heavy to carry with the rest of her list, Meera dropped the quilt off at the dump again before continuing to her next stop.\n\n As she trekked on through town, she kept her eyes peeled for any sort of food fresh enough to find. Bakeries and fruit carts delightfully tickled her sense of smell, but there was nothing to feed a sick dog. Yet, as Meera began to grow impatient, the savory smell of spiced meat latched to her nose. The scent led her to a burly man with a thick mustache standing in front of his shop. In his hairy hands, he held a plate of steamy, buttery, seasoned chicken; the kind made from years of experience. The man called to the people in the street to sample his dish and as Meera approached, he to notice of her presence.\n\n “Ah hallo, little pup!” The man bellowed in a thick accent as he squatted down to face Meera. “Have you come to taste the dish of Giovanni’s? You know what good food is. I’m the best in cook in town! Here, take another smell.” he lowered the dish for Meera to see. The bird’s crispy skin glistened and the juices on the plate swished around like liquid gold.\n\n Meera whined softly and looked away meekly. The man laughed loudly exposing a gold tooth in his maw. “You are sly dog. Trying to charm Giovanni like that! I’m sure that’s how you get away with mischief, eh?” Meera stuck her tongue out, giving up her facade. “Well, I tell you secret. This chicken is for show. A little old for customers to buy, so I give to you since you asked so nicely.” the man winked as he made his way back into his shop. Not long after, he came back with the chicken wrapped in a cloth and placed it in Meera’s mouth. The man waved his fingers and Meera wagged her tail in thanks as she departed to her next stop.\n\n Finally, she found herself at the edge of the forest. ‘I remember Dad saying something about feverfew and sage helping when I was young. I hope I don't take too long to look for them!’ she thought as she looked around the shaded woods. As expected, the herbs were proving to be quite difficult to find.\n\n The sun had lowered significantly during her search, but she was determined to find them. Although, after some searching, Meera’s mouth became quite dry. The sound of running water hissed in the distance and drew Meera towards its sound. A rushing river came into view as she approached. The water was ice cold and refreshed her tired body. When she finished, a very strong scent suddenly entered her nostrils, it was similar to mint but had a more earthy air about it. She drew her gaze ahead and that’s when she saw it, a batch of sage, ready for the picking!\n\n Meera continued her search for the last thing on her list, with the chicken and a batch of sage in tow. She marched deeper into the forest for any sign of feverfew. Eventually, a foul sour smell had entered her lungs causing her to almost spit out her items in disgust. Despite this, her instincts drew out her natural curiosity and she looked for the source of the odor.\n\n Her nose led her to a mound surrounded by flowers at the center of a small clearing. Of these flowers, Meera caught sight of what she was looking for, feverfew! She excitedly closed in on the herbs, when out of nowhere, the mound bursted into a hail of dust revealing a rugged badger at its mouth.\n\n When its black beady eyes focused on Meera, it began to hiss and growl as it emerged from its den.\n\n Meera nervously chuckled, realizing the source of the stench, “Uh, hey neighbor! You wouldn't mind if I-”\n\n “Go away,” the badger rumbled and began shifting towards Meera. The badger’s gnarly claws began digging into the soft soil.\n\n “No problem! But first, you wouldn't mind giving me a couple of your flowers, would you?” Meera replied shooting a look similar to the one she gave the burly man. The badger’s only response was a spit wad shot in her direction.\n\n “So you want to play like that, eh?” Meera asked as she placed her items down.\n\n “I didn't live this long playing nice, dog,” the badger boasted licking its teeth.\n\n Meera trotted towards the badger until reaching full stride. The badger also charged as fast as its stocky legs could carry. Its mind was set for battle, only for Meera to jump over it and land close enough to the den to quickly snatch up the herbs in her mouth. She turned on the dime with a quick twist of her heel and made a mad dash for the rest of her things. The badger scurried to keep up, but Meera had already nabbed the items before it could reach her, leaving it in the dust.\n\n Though victorious, Meera was exhausted from her venture. She dragged herself back to the junkyard and found Buster wrapped in the quilt she had brought him. He slowly opened his eyes as she approached and asked, “Where you been dollface? I've been bored outta my mind since you left.”\n\n “Oh, you missed me after all?” Meera asked as she sat next to him.\n\n “Tch, yeah right.” Buster laughed before coughing.\n\n “Well, anyways, here. I brought you some things.” she answered as she placed the chicken down with the herbs sprinkled on top. Buster tore into its flesh and bones savagely as Meera gave a small chuckle. “Hope you feel better, slugger.” Meera softly said before resting next to him in the quilt.\n\n By the time Buster finished his meal, Meera had fallen into a deep sleep. Buster felt an eerie similarity to the night spent in the caverns. His heart grew heavy, though he did not know why. He turned towards Meera and noticed she was not fully covered by the quilt. Without thinking, Buster scooted closer, pressing his back next to her’s and covering the rest of her with the rest of the quilt.
