The moon was high in the starless night and the streetlights burned passionately as people walked about to enjoy the evening festivities. Ramsay was also on the prowl after a day of visitations with Meera and her… plus one, Buster.\n\n His paws treaded lightly as he stayed toward the opposite side of the street from the townspeople and their liveliness. Some jamboree or another had the folks drinking and singing obnoxiously. It was simply too much. Ramsay’s eyelids grew heavy, but his own stomach groaned like a banshee in the night. Though he checked his favorite dining spots, and even looked for something to hunt, there were slim pickings. Whatever he did find, was not nearly enough to silence his gullet. Ramsay peered into the streets that the jamboree was in, and saw the people sloppily slosh food all over the cobblestone. His mouth wetted from the sight and with a quick glance to check if anyone was watching, he sneaked his way in through the cover of the darkness.\n\n Even for a dog Ramsay’s size, the night concealed him well, aside from his amber eyes. Lights hazily glowed orange as people continued to dance and laugh merrily. Many strong smells abused his nostrils in search for something, anything meaty. Soon, his nose took the lead as he caught wind of… something. Ramsay closed his eyes and picked up pace in search of the semi-sweet, earthy smell. Closer and closer he came until his nose bumped into a soft texture. When he opened his eyes, he lightly jumped in surprise.\n\n Before him stood a female chow chow, with a peachy coat that shined brightly under the streetlight they found themselves under. She was the source of the mysterious smell, and though the revelation shocked Ramsay as he hadn't experienced such a well groomed street dog before, he was mildly disappointed it wasn't a meal he found. It was then he realized that the texture he felt earlier was their noses colliding, and out of common courtesy, he approached to apologize. Though initially as shocked as he, as Ramsay made his approach, a coy smile swept across her face.\n\n “Excuse me, Madame. I hadn't realized you were there. Forgive me for disturbing you.” Ramsay stated softly.\n\n With a slight Cajun drawl and a gentle tilt of her head, she said, “Oh ho ho, what a gentleman! It's no problem at all when its a handsome scoundrel such as yourself.”\n\n “Ah-yes, well-” Ramsay stumbled a bit at the she-dog’s frankness, “Have a good evening Ma’am.” with a nod of his head, he turned to leave and continue his search.\n\n However, before Ramsay could go on his way she called to him, “Oh, Mr. Manners, won't you join me for dinner? I had gathered some things from the night, but I have no one to enjoy it with! Would you like to enjoy supper with me?”\n\n After a brief pause and a rumble from his stomach, Ramsay simply smirked and said, “Call me Ramsay, and I'd be delighted to join you, Miss…?”\n\n “Eleanor.” She smiled as they made their way to her dwelling.\n\n The jamboree rung on as the two dogs approached an abandoned fenced-off shack. A gaping hole in the splintering pickets made itself apparent when they got closer. Even Ramsay was able to squeeze through without much trouble. There inside the fence lied a variety of pastries, bread, and of course, meats. Eleanor sashayed across from Ramsay and with a hearty chuckle, she exclaimed, “What're we waiting for? Bon appetit!”\n\n Ramsay lowered his head and began eating with all the poise and self restraint he could muster.\n\n “Again, thank you for letting me join you.” Ramsay broke the ice as he inched closer to a turkey leg.\n\n “Not a problem, Cher. Have as much as you like!” Eleanor replied as she carefully bit into some bread.\n\n “If you don't mind me asking, you are a street dog, aren't you?”\n\n “I am, why do you ask?” She replied fluttering her eyes.\n\n “Your scent... is different from most other dogs here. It had me curious.”\n\n “Do you like it? It's my own blend of scented flowers. I’ll admit, I wasn't always a street dog, but my owners always kept me groomed with a similar concoction of sorts. It helps me remember them by.”\n\n “Ah, forgive me. Was it recent?”\n\n “No no, it's fine.” Eleanor chuckled, “it might have been a while, but it still feels recent. When you lose somethin’ important to you, that is.”\n\n “Hmm.” Ramsay replied softly.\n\n “Oh, ça suffit. We're here to enjoy ourselves not worry about the past.” She said as she stood up. “You mind joining me for one last thing, Ramsay?”\n\n Ramsay too had enjoyed his fill and stretched before getting to his feet.\n\n “Certainly, you've been a gracious host, Eleanor. Lead the way.” he replied.\n\n Out of her dwelling and towards a grassy hilltop, they went. There, Eleanor sat on a soft patch of grass and Ramsay sat next. Where they sat, the whole town glowed a pale orange as the lights flickered brightly.\n\n “Those humans sure are strange. I don't know why they throw those bright lights in the sky, but they sure do look beautiful.” Eleanor said as she looked towards the town.\n\n “I suppose so. They’re rather loud though. I'm glad it's a once in awhile occurrence.” Ramsay remarked.\n\n “You got a point, if they shot the lights in the air often, they wouldn't be as special. That's why I like times like tonight. They have left over lights from the last celebration. There won't be as many, but it'll be quite romantic.” Eleanor said as she began to groom her coat. Fireworks started squealing into the sky and gently popping into fiery bouquets. The folk down in the town started cheering as the music continued to strum. Ramsay felt uneasy when he noticed Eleanor had turned to face him.\n\n “Do you believe in true love, Ramsay?” she whispered as she drew closer to him, her side now pressing up against Ramsay.\n\n “... What are you doing?” Ramsay asked as he pulled away slowly.\n\n “I-I hate to be so upfront Cher, but when I met you, I think I fell in love!” Eleanor exclaimed as she stood suddenly.\n\n “Y-you what?!” Ramsay barked as he too quickly rose to his feet.\n\n “It's true! You’re so handsome and courteous! Please tell me you feel the same way?” she panted as she gazed deeply into Ramsay's eyes as if she were piercing his soul.\n\n After staring into her eyes in silence, Ramsay finally breathed in and let out a low sigh, having now fully composed himself he spoke, “Eleanor, I am sorry, but I already belong to someone else.”\n\n “O-oh… t-that's a shame,” she huffed, while appearing to be struggling mentally, “...I don't like sharing with others. B-but for a catch like you, I'm willing to make the exception!”\n\n “No. I can’t.” Ramsay sighed, as he turned away, “Thank you for the meal, you were a very generous host.” and with that, he made his way down the hill, leaving her alone. The fireworks still blazed above Eleanor as tears rolled down her face.\n\n Eleanor slumped down to the ground as her crying turned to sobbing, with gasps and snorts occurring frequently. As the fireworks died down so did her tears. When she finally rose from the grass, she held her head confidently, and thought, ‘Good heavens… that dog is so headstrong.
