The next day, Meera and Buster left briefly to visit Ramsay and Reggie, leaving Lawrence and the food behind at the junkyard. Not long after, they returned, ate breakfast, and prepared for Lawrence's final test.\n\n Buster marched on with Meera and Lawrence trailing behind. Lawrence’s passion had weighed down on Buster’s shoulders as well as the possibility of a chicken joining his crew. He frothed at the thought. They passed street after street, alley after alley with the hope, in Buster’s mind, of scaring off the stout rooster.\n\n After a short search, the group found themselves at the broken down doorway of an abandoned building. Fractured glass and scorched bricks scarred the building, whispering a story long forgotten. A strong musk of dog wafted from inside the entrance as well. Buster hopped onto a crate, located underneath one of the windows. As he peered inside the abandoned building, he spotted two dogs snoozing away amongst the clutter. Upon further inspection, he noticed that they both looked savagely disfigured. One was a white bull terrier, who had a cavernous scar where his left eye used to be, and a missing left ear to match. His companion was a boxer dog, whose jagged teeth gleamed in the darkened room due to his upper right lip missing. Buster beamed devilishly as he turned to Lawrence for the final challenge.\n\n “Lawrence, do I have a challenge for you!”\n\n “And what would that be?” Lawrence curiously asked.\n\n Buster lifted Lawrence towards the window seal and allowed the little chicken to observe as Buster explained the rules of the challenge.\n\n “Meera likes shiny things, Lawrence. I don't know why, but it doesn't matter. All ya gotta do is sneak past them dogs and find something that she’ll like.” Buster explained.\n\n “Now wait!-” Meera nervously barked before being loudly shushed by Buster. Lawrence and he looked again into the window to find the pair merely moved around for a more comfortable sleeping position.\n\n “You don't want to blow the little guys cover, do ya?” whispered Buster.\n\n “Be quiet, Buster!” Meera hissed. “Lawrence, you don't have to prove anything to him!”\n\n “It’s okay Meera” Lawrence replied, “ I’m gonna do this. I made up my mind.”\n\n “Atta boy, Lawrence!” encourage Buster.\n\n With that, Lawrence fluttered from the window to the entrance and began to waddle in. The dogs laid at the far end of the room gargling in their sleep, yet Lawrence knew a wrong move spelled disaster for him. Lawrence quickly eyeballed the room for anything of value when a glint caught his eye. A glistening silver spoon shined on top of the dusty desk at the corner of the room. Sadly, the mutilated hounds were between it and Lawrence. The trembling rooster gulped before shakily tip toeing around the sleeping beasts. He reached the desk while periodically looking over to check if the dogs had caught onto him.\n\n He climbed up the open drawers to the top of the desk and found himself right next to his shiny ticket to having friends and respect. Lawrence quickly looked over to the window to see Meera and Buster still watching him. Lawrence gave them the thumbs up as he went to grab the spoon when he accidentally knocked it off the desk right next the dogs.\n\n Their eyes squelched open and focused sharply at Lawrence. Frozen in fear, Lawrence helplessly watched as the pair got up and began inching towards the desk chuckling as they did.\n\n Their chuckles turned to snarls as they got closer, Lawrence signaled to his companions that he needed support.\n\n “We gotta do something!” shouted Meera.\n\n “He wanted to be a junkyard dog. Now he’s gotta defend himself like one.” Buster stated blankly.\n\n Having finally had enough of this charade, Meera growled lowly, hopped off of the crates and sprinted inside. At the same time, Lawrence looked down towards the spoon in front of the two feral dogs trying to judge the distance. Time slowed as Lawrence made a leap of faith for the spoon, the dogs lunged, and Meera made a break for Lawrence during his dive. Just as the two dogs were about to sink their teeth into Lawrence, Meera swiftly snatched up the little rooster by his tail feathers and made a break for the exit. While fierce, the two scarred dogs simply could not keep up with Meera as she blazed out of the room, into the streets, and past the moving cars bustling about.\n\n There, Buster was waiting for them and joined on their speedy departure. He looked back as they continued to run to see that the terrier and boxer were not following them, but watching from the entrance of the burnt building.\n\n A couple streets down, the crew finally stopped to catch their breath. Buster chortled in between his gasps. He suddenly turned towards Meera, who was still holding Lawrence by his tail feathers. “Lawrence, that must have been quite the doozy!” Buster remarked. “Thank goodness Meera was there to catch you when she did. It's just such a shame you dropped the spoon. That would have made you one of us, and made a great gift!”\n\n “Oh, but I did!”\n\n “Excuse me?” Busters face dropped as the rooster pulled the silver teaspoon out from under his feathers. He began to stammer as Lawrence graciously handed the spoon to Meera who happily accepted.\n\n “Thank you, Lawrence.” Meera giggled “I guess that officially makes you one of us.”\n\n “Oh boy! I can’t wait to tell everyone at home!” beamed Lawrence while flapping his wings with joy.\n\n “No!” Buster erupted.\n\n “N-no?” Lawrence shrunk back while tears welled in his eyes. At this point, Meera had enough.\n\n “And why, pray tell, can’t he? He did exactly what you asked of him and has shown that he’s more than capable of helping us anyway he can. So what’s the issue now?” challenged Meera with narrowed eyes.\n\n Buster’s head throbbed. His blood pounded against his skull and he clenched his teeth until they hurt. Buster struggled to think of a way to get out of the mess he put himself in. Then as suddenly as he started, Buster froze. Meera and Lawrence threw concerned glances at each other when Buster began to move again. He stood tall, took a deep breath, and looked over to Lawrence.\n\n “You know, Lawrence, I was rather jealous of you.” Buster said softly with a warm smile.\n\n “Really?” Lawrence nervously replied while Meera raised a brow.\n\n “Oh yeah, I just couldn’t believe everything you’ve done. You made it look easy too! I just couldn't understand how you were able to accomplish everything I asked of you. I started to get upset until it hit me.”\n\n “What did?”\n\n “The reason you did so well was the fact that you aren’t a junkyard dog, and you never will be” Buster continued. “You are a rooster though, and you did what I said, not like a dog would, but how a rooster would! Understand?”\n\n “I think so?” Lawrence pondered.\n\n “Think about it, Lawrence.” Buster said as he lightly placed a paw on Lawrence’s shoulder. “Those workers woulda kicked any other dog out of the construction site, and I wouldn't have known what to do when facing those two ugly mutts back there and I’m the king of the junkyard!”\n\n “You really mean it?” asked Lawrence.\n\n Sighing in frustration, Meera interjected, “Isn’t that all the more reason he should join?”\n\n “No, now listen up!” Buster bellowed. “Lawrence will not join my crew. Not because he doesn't have the stuff, but because he’s more than capable!” The young chicken’s eyes twinkled from Buster’s honeyed words. “Go home, Lawrence, and show that farm and those animals what the honorary junkyard rooster is all about!”\n\n Lawrence squeaked in joy whilst Meera sighed, ‘Oh, Lawrence.’\n\n “Yeah! I-I can’t believe I didn’t see this! You’re right Buster, I will. You’re the best teacher ever!”\n\n “Don’t you forget it, champ.” Buster replied while smugly glancing at Meera. She simply shot back a stern look.\n\n And so Little Lawrence said his goodbyes to his new friends. As the sun began to descend, Lawrence made his way home, no longer holding faux confidence in his heart. It was then the next day that he came at odds with his rival, the vantablack rooster. It was then that he stared unyieldingly into the eyes of the beast. It was then that the towering ebony foul submitted and let Lawrence take its place at feeding time. From then on, the flock followed Lawrence wherever he went and he was never short on company and it was all thanks to his friends.\n\n Buster was relieved that his plan worked, and after some coaxing and bribing, Meera eventually let the situation go as well. For now, at least.\n\n Meanwhile, back at the disheveled abandoned building, the boxer was lounging amongst the rubbish while his partner stared out into the streets in deep thought. The terrier turned to the boxer, “Hey, Zeus. Did that she-dog look familiar to you?”\n\n After pondering a bit the boxer replied, “She did now that you mention it, Bullseye.
