Lawrence, a dwarf rooster, peered out of his coop as the morning grew bright. He breathed in deeply and the cold morning air filled his lungs. ‘Today is a new day!’ he thought as he marched out to feel the breeze. With mettle rising in his fluffy belly, he made his way to join the other fowl for breakfast.\n\n The other hens and roosters towered over him as he boldly made his way through the clucking crowd. Lawrence smiled and winked at passersby, giving the most charming greetings he could muster. However, despite his best efforts, they went unrecognized. At the center of the flock was a great mound of corn where the locals busily pecked at each kernel. Even at his size, Lawrence couldn't manage to squeeze through to reach the feed.\n\n “Excuse me!” he called to a towering vantablack rooster that blocked his way. The bird twisted its neck with a snap to face Lawrence. The dark creature lowered its head to meet him, its bright yellow eyes tightened and focused on Lawrence’s pudgy face. “I-I was hoping you could let me through to get in there. D-do you mind?” asked Lawrence as his valor drained away. The rooster’s silent but piercing gaze stabbed at Lawrence’s heart. “That's ok, I-I’ll find another spot!” he chuckled nervously.\n\n Without a moment to spare, Lawrence zipped out of view. Unfortunately, the corn had all been pecked away by the time he reached through the flock. Then, everyone left to go about their day, leaving poor Lawrence alone again, just like everyday before.\n\n Later that day, Lawrence climbed to the top of the roof of the barn to peer into town. He huffed, ‘If only I could get a little respect around here.’ As he continued to sulk and stare into the town’s bustle, the sudden sounds of barking echoed throughout the streets.\n\n A lone coyote with a string of sausages sped around a corner of the main street with two other dogs hot on its tail. The two dogs gave one another a nod and split, with the smaller sleeker female disappearing between the buildings and the huskier male one continuing chase. Without warning, the female flew over a fence and landed in the coyote’s path. The coyote screeched to a stop with the male dog still in pursuit. With, the coyote distracted by the surprise, the female snatched the string of sausage and threw it to the male. The coyote attempted to leap forward to retrieve its lost prize, only to be swiftly snatched by its tail and tossed by the female, crash landing into a nearby trash bin. In the meantime, the male caught their reward and casually wrapped the links around his neck.\n\n Lawrence’s eyes locked unblinkingly on to the effortless frolic of the two dogs. In his mind, no greater dance could be performed and it was then that he knew what he had to do: become the top dog!\n\n With a running start, Lawrence leaped from the top of the barn and fluttered all the way down to the grassy floor on the other side of the property’s fence. Without much room for consideration, he sprinted towards town hoping to catch up with the two majestic beasts that, in his mind, would train him for greatness. By the time he reached the main street, the dogs had already left. ‘They couldn't have gotten far.’ he thought, as he tiptoed around the coyote still laying in the trash pile. Once passed, he continued to speed through the street, looking for his new mentors.\n\n It was not long before Lawrence found them. Buster and Meera laughed and panted as they continued to stroll down an alleyway so that they can enjoy the reward in the shade. Lawrence gulped, realizing that these dogs were a lot bigger in person and a lot more scary looking than the old dog back at the barn. Yet despite this, he ruffled his feathers and shook his tail as he marched up to them. Due to his size, they didn't notice him at first, but soon his scent reached their nostrils causing them to turn their heads towards him.\n\n “Hey, would you look at that, Meera, looks like the second course has arrived.” Buster sneered with a toothy smirk. Meera’s eyes widened a bit and she gasped, lowering herself to eye level with Lawrence.\n\n “Ooooh, hello there. Are you lost little guy?” asked Meera, bright eyed and curious.\n\n “No! I'm not lost and I'm not little! I'm just a little short is all!” Lawrence replied.\n\n “That’s putting it mildly, half-pint.” Buster retorted.\n\n “Buster! Leave the kid alone, his parents are probably looking for him!”\n\n “Wait a minute!” Lawrence exclaimed, appalled and blushing at the embarrassing exchange. “I’m not a kid! I’m an adult, thank you very much!” Meera and Buster looked at each other in shock, then Buster burst into wheezing guffaws while Meera tried to hold back her snorting with a paw in front of her mouth. Getting more embarrassed by the second, Lawrence was beginning to second doubt his decision. But, he quickly shook his head in an effort to regain composure.\n\n He breathed in and with the spirit of an eagle, he yelled, “Excuse me!” The two laughing dogs stopped their antics and turned back again towards Lawrence. With the focus back on him, his meekness returned. “I need your help.” he softly stated. “No one at home respects me, and I’m tired of it. When I saw you guys over there doing all those cool moves, I thought if I could do something just as cool, I can finally get some friends! Will you guys teach me to be… a junkyard dog?” Lawrence tried to hold back the tears from his passionate speech.\n\n “No.” Buster said flatly.\n\n “Buster!” Meera scolded.\n\n “Baby, he’s a chicken! What do you want me to say?”\n\n “Aww, c'mon. It can’t hurt just to give him a shot, his size could actually come in handy.”\n\n With an exasperated sigh, Buster turned to face Lawrence. “Look, little chicken-”\n\n “Call me, Lawrence.” the little rooster replied while rubbing the tears away from his eyes.\n\n “... Lawrence.” Buster muttered with grimace, “It’s a bad world out here, and you could end up on someone’s dinner plate at any second. Even mine! So, are you sure you want to run with the big dogs?” Buster had driven his face as close to Lawrence’s as physically possible.\n\n “Y-yes, sir.” Lawrence answered nervously.\n\n With another sigh, “Alright, squirt. We’ll give ya a shot, follow me.”\n----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------\n\nNext: https://inkbunny.net/s/1860854","description_bbcode_parsed":" Lawrence, a dwarf rooster, peered out of his coop as the morning grew bright.
