The burning smell of dated sausages from breakfast filled Meera’s nostrils as she brisked down the streets looking for Buster. The sun now had ascended high on its morning perch and shined even brighter, heating the pavement below Meera’s paws. The heat also amplified Buster’s scent as she continued to track him. ‘Sheesh,’ she thought panting, ‘he sure can give someone the slip when he wants to!’ Finally, the trail got stronger as she found herself at the edge of the park. Squinting, Meera peered across the landscape and saw a dark mass atop a hill next to a shady tree and a few bushes.\n\n Leisurely, she strolled to Buster’s side and lay next to him. Buster remained silent with his brows furrowed and his eyes not even stealing a glance. Meera figured, after a few hefty moments, that it was up to her to get the conversation rolling as they peered into the woods not far beyond the park.\n\n “So, uh-”\n\n “Shouldn’t you be with your pappy, Dollface?” interrupted Buster.\n\n Meera sighed, “Look, I’m sorry about what happened back there with my dad and Reggie, I didn’t know you already had a complicated past between the two of them. Or else I wouldn’t have asked you to come with me.”\n\n “I knew it was a bad idea to come with… and I didn’t know Reggie would’ve gotten out. And I also didn’t think your dad would’ve still had a bad impression of me after a year. It's not like we had anything personal goin’ on. So I don’t get what his deal is!”\n\n “Sooo, what did happen between you two?”\n\n “Like I said, it wasn’t personal. The Tramp had left me for the cushy pillow life. It was then that I realized I didn't need anyone. To prove it, to myself and that back stabbing lowlife, I looked no further than the most savage of street dogs, your dad. If I could beat him, and gain his turf and reputation, then… I dunno. I had a point to give, I just didn’t know what. I just knew I had to fight your dad. So, I did, and I limped away with my life hanging by my whiskers. Heard he had done worse, and I know it's a bad world out there, but sheesh.”\n\n “When did you fight him?”\n\n “Um, I think it was a little bit past last year’s Fireworks Festival. Why?”\n\n Meera’s eyes widened a bit before looking down “... Oh.”\n\n “What is it?” asked Buster noticing her hesitation. He turned to see Meera had lowered her ears and had a sullen look.\n\n “I think you caught my dad at a really bad time. He had also lost someone rather close to him. My mother.”\n\n “Aw sheesh, I’m sorry, I didn't even know! I thought he was always that harsh!”\n\n “At first.” Meera chuckled. “Then he met my mom. He changed… a little. He was less violent, and more dogs were able to walk away from encounters with him. When, she died, then he got worse, for a time. Maybe he saw that you were hurt too.”\n\n “Maybe. Sure woulda liked to have him show it while mauling me.”\n\n “Hey, you're still here right? If he really wanted to kill you then, he would’ve. I still get sick when I hear of his previous conquests, but he’s my dad. He tried his best to love and care for me. You can give him that, can't you?”\n\n “Yeeeah, alright. I guess.”\n\n “Thanks.” answered Meera with a small smile.\n\n “Sooo, ya still considerin’ about our partnership, or is that out the window now?”\n\nAfter a couple moments of silence, Meera turned towards Buster and said, “I dunno, maybe if you treat me to lunch too, I’ll reconsider?”\n\n “Ya liked the deli, huh?” Buster smiled brightly.\n\n “It was delicious!” Meera cried with watery eyes.\n\n “Alright,” Buster chuckled, “but remember, I got big plans for this town. It ain't gonna be easy. Ya still wanna join?”\n\n “Sure, I got a good feeling about you.” she teased.\n\n Without missing a beat, they rose and made their way to town to enjoy another meal, opening another chapter in their lives.\n----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------\n\nPrevious: https://inkbunny.net/s/1859295","description_bbcode_parsed":" The burning smell of dated sausages from breakfast filled Meera’s nostrils as she brisked down the streets looking for Buster.
