It may be true that toddlers need no less than twelve hours rest, but isn’t it a bit bizarre these boisterous babies are meant to spend half the day dormant in their cribs? Isn’t it somewhat strange that when pleasant afternoons persist, rather than prompting them to play, their parents put them down for naps? Such is Pablo’s most recent revelation; while never opposed to naps as an infant, now a tot who can walk and talk, now a kid who makes much more use of an Electric-type’s enhanced energy, so begins the boy’s sudden shift in his sleep schedule. “Hehehehe!” Thinking ten minutes is too long spent sitting still, finding it silly not to stay up when the sun’s still up, the toddler ends his nap early. Not feeling the slightest bit sleepy while he gleefully giggles and playfully kicks his feet, he figures his time’s far better spent awake in this vibrant world of wonder than asleep in the still sphere of shut-eye. “Hehehe…huh?” However, shortly after Pablo stands up, being met with near silence while the bars of his baby bed bar him from his toys, this newfound nap knowledge now places the Pichu in a predicament. Awake far sooner than either adult anticipated, unable to count on his caretakers picking him up for quite a while, the Electric-type tot must make use of all this extra time amidst being confined to his crib. “Hmmm….” The diaper-clad kid looks down with a defeated expression, now a prisoner in the cell his crib has become as he grips at the bars, begrudgingly believing he must accept this sentence of bed-bound boredom. Only a faint giggle is heard as Pablo spots his feet slightly sinking into his mattress, but such silver lining isn’t enough to stop this sad situation… “Oh! I know!” ….or so you may think! His face suddenly shifting to a wide smile, his playful personality pitching in, the rowdy toddler realizes his crib isn’t a prison, but a place of untapped playtime potential. “Bouncy! Bouncy!” Transcending the limits of traditional function, going beyond the bed’s roles of rest and reprieve, Pablo’s lively laughter fills the room as he transforms his crib into a top-tier trampoline. The mattress’ high quantities of cushion make for all sorts of exciting action, enabling the boy to bounce higher and higher while its soft surface allows for several minutes of awesome aerial adventures, prompting the Pichu to ponder how it’s only now he thought of using his crib with this fun-filled function in mind. “Hehehehehe!” Having a blast with this bouncy boredom buster, but still needing to pass the time before his parents come back, the toddler then tries to find another way to enjoy this environment, wondering how else the crib can suit his playful pursuits. His gaze moving from the pure white mattress to the dark brown bars, its structure somewhat resembling a ladder, Pablo suddenly recalls a recent trip to the park and all the cool climbing adventures included, be they the three-rung trek to the top of the play structure or the journey around the jungle gym’s colorful climbing dome. “Oh! I know!” Once again, the Pichu’s playfulness allows his crib to ascend past its conventional purpose, making it so much more than a place to give his body a break. Now, as a two year old touting far better mobility, the bars on his bed are the perfect chance to test his coordination, a way to show off his motor skills beyond the park setting. Cracking another wide smile, Pablo is more than willing to accept the challenge his crib has proposed, more than ready to show he’s not an immobile infant anymore. And so, the Electric-type’s exciting escapade, the baby boy’s bold escape, begins. Looking up at the barred barrier separating him from the other side, its height taunting his tiny two year old body, Pablo is already presented with quite the coordination challenge, needing to extend his reach somehow. Luckily, the toddler has exactly the trick for such a task, though one that demands its own share of skill. Straightening his back until his body is in perfect alignment, lifting his heels until only his toes touch the ground, this technique of tippy toe standing takes both balance and strength, requiring the boy to support all his body weight with his legs alone. Slowly reaching the top bar, his body starting to wobble all the while, will the lone support of his little legs be enough, or has Pablo’s early escape already come to an end? ……….CLINK! Nope! He’s not done yet! Having gotten a grip on his sole shot at the other side, Pablo passes the first test with flying colors, but another challenge already awaits. With his hands hardly holding on to the bar, not only must he show a strong degree of dexterity, but also a lot of arm strength to commence the climb. His grip weakening by the second, his legs shaking from prolonged use of the tippy toe technique, he’ll have to be quick to commit if he wants to continue. Does the kid have what it takes to keep this going, or will he have to settle for standing around until mommy and daddy make their return? BOING! Wow! What a stunning showcase of athleticism! Supplementing his arm strength with the springy mattress, Pablo has pulled himself off the ground, succeeding the second trial by the thread of a needle. But, with only the small spaces between the bars supporting his feet, having a lot less leg room compared to the ladders he climbed last week, this test of endurance won’t exactly be a walk in the park. “Mmmmph….mmmmph…” But who says this third trial will stop the tenacious toddler? Using his upper body with utmost efficiency, swiftly kicking his feet as he slowly inches his way up, Pablo gets closer and closer to completely scaling the crib, feeling a strong sense of pride for his consecutive feats of coordination. However, so immersed in the thrill of the moment, so caught up in his crib escape, he fails to notice a more familiar feeling, a particular pressure whose potency only amplifies from his actions. PBLAAAAART!!! Uh oh! Perhaps having pushed too hard during this pursuit, the Pichu suddenly dumps several smelly solids into his diaper, his sensitive bowels surrendering to all the strain. With Pablo making prominently more poo poo from his promoted palette, this sudden stinky now makes for quite a saggy setback as the toddler sports a shocked expression. Will all that doo doo in his diaper be his downfall? Will Pablo’s packed pampers spell defeat for the aspiring escapist? “Mmmmph…..mmmmmph…..” No! It’s not over yet! What astounding adaptability! Even with the extra baggage of his abrupt boom boom, the Electric-type endures, not letting a loaded diaper derail him as he climbs to the top of the crib. Only two more trials stand in the toddler’s way, the fourth demanding feats of flexibility. Slowly lifting the left foot over, straddling between both sides, the boy must make another big move to get the rest of his body out of the bed, one that is both fast and fluid. So, is this as far as he goes? Has this diaper filling daredevil bitten off more than he can chew? FWOOOOOOSH!!! Of course not! Swiftly moving the other leg over, his droopy diaper swaying from the aftershock of this ambitious action, Pablo’s final challenge awaits as he faces the front of the crib. With a daunting two foot drop to the floor, the Pichu is now presented with two choices, and he’ll have to think fast before his grip fully falters. If he’s confident in his climbing, he can use the bars to slowly descend back down, the safer option with the sole trade off of taking more time. Or, if he holds his balance in high regard, he can abandon the bars and take a big jump, the quicker option that runs the risk of- “Weeeeeeee!” Naturally, the boy who embodies action over thought attempts the latter. Pablo squeals and laughs as he leaps right off, but amidst enjoying this ample amount of air time, will this be a choice the kid will come to regret? Will the Electric-type end his extraordinary escape on a sour note? …………. And he sticks the landing! A ten out of ten performance for Pablo! Having thoroughly enjoyed this action-packed adventure, energized by the experience he would have missed had he spent his time taking a nap, the Pichu then waddles his way to his rocking horse, as if to reward himself for completing his crib quest. “Howsie! Howsie!” SMOOOOOOOSH!!! Poopy diapers doing nothing to disrupt his playful disposition, notions of naps not stopping him from being the boisterous boy who hardly takes a break, Pablo is pleased to make more time for his favorite toy. Sure, his parents may scold him for not sleeping, or they’ll tell him kids get cranky without their naps, but if this carefree kid is anything to go by, perhaps this claim isn’t as credible as caretakers think. For kids like Pablo who love to play, there’s no need to sleep during the day! End
