They told themselves tales of the last days of gods after they lost their worshipers, dying and forgotten... but they never actually forgot.\n\nIn the rituals during the changing of seasons when they gathered with friends...\nIn the formal etiquette that they used to greet each other...\nIn every conversation they had, in half the words they spoke, they remembered.\n\nThey just forgot that they remembered.\n\nIt was a curious state of affairs. Mortals still paying their tribute without realizing it. Without the conscious acknowledgment, without awareness of why, they could no longer see their gods, but they could still supply them. In some ways it was better, without the ability to see their gods they could no longer make horribly reckless decisions to please them.\n\n\nIt could be very boring for the gods, though.\n\nBeing the guardian of a city by the sea is nice when it means accepting the occasional fish and protecting the oceans.\n\nWatching over more than thirty million people, people who have turned your city into the commerce capital of the world, whose every transaction feeds you more with the spiritual essence of every bit of wealth that passes into your lands even as their own affluence blinds them more and more completely to your presence...\n\nWell, it feels a lot like being all dressed up with no place to go.\n\nAt least the power's nice.
